Our class motto says, If we are to discover new oceans we must have the courage to lose sight of the shore. We must always hold dear our memories of high school and the past. We must never forget the people who have helped and cared for us. But our challenge now is to leave WAHS and to discover new oceans, to tread new paths, to think new thoughts, to do what has never been done before, and to live every day to its fullest. Thank you WAHS for all you have given and all you have done for us. And to the underclassmen: Don't take for granted the opportunities facing you at WAHS. Realize how lucky and privileged you are to have WAHS as your launching pad to success! THIS ALGEBRA PROBLEM SURE IS LONG!!! 26 MIREYA UBAL Mireya Ubal comes to Windom from El Salvador, Chile. She is a lovely 18 year old with long dark hair, dark eyes, and a big smile. Mireya is a senior here at WAHS. She is staying with the Al McLemore family. Mireya has 1 sister, 2 brothers, and 1 dog. Her father is a mining engineer and her mother is a housewife. They live in a mining center. It is in a mountainous area, 8000 ft. above sea level. The weather there is generally nice all year round. They have summer when we have winter. Chile is on the coast of South America so they eat a lot of fresh sea food. Mireya's school is quite different from ours. They wear uniforms. They can choose any subjects they want to take. They must take 11 subjects. Some of the subjects Mireya took while in school in Chile were: Spanish, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Philosophy, History, Geography, Music, Art, English, and French. Mireya says she was a very good student in Chile. She says school here is not as difficult. Another difference between our two school systems is that in Chile the teachers move to different classrooms and the students stay in the same classroom. Some of Mireya's interests include playing flute, listening to classical music, playing and watching tennis, bowling, and golf. She also likes to read. Her favorite book she says is something you probably aren't familiar with it is El Quijote de la Mancha : Miguel de Cervante Saavedra. It is a famous Spanish book. Good luck Mireya in all you do. We hope you have enjoyed your stay here! 27 Ltve CRAIG PETERSON- VICE PRESIDENT; NANCY WOIZESCHKE- PRESIDENT; WAYNE MARAS- SECRETARY. THE JUNIOR CLASS This years junior class has had many challenging times. We have had alot of pressures with school work and sports, but we have been able to stick it out. Being in the highschool for three years, we have managed to recognize the equality of every single person. This is really great!! We would like to thank the seniors for making this an exciting year for us. We are really going to miss you! Along with our enthusiasm for life and our school spirit, we wish you all the best of luck in 1982. 30 THE JUNIOR CLASS PLAY Blithe Spirit was the name of the junior class play. It was about a man, Mr. Condomine, who wanted to write a book about seances. To get a little background, he asked a medium to perform a seance. Everyone thought she was a goofy char- acter, and did not believe in it. But, something did happen, only Mr. Condomine could see, and that was his deceased wife, Elvira. This is the first year they double casted the play. Both casts did an exceptional job. Congratulations cast and crews! THE SOPHOMORE CLASS Ambitiously the sophomore class prepares for their future. We are searching for our identity in tomorrow's world. We've gained acceptance by the upper classmen. Many are involved in sports, music, and other extracurricular activities and enjoy it. Many are taking on more responsibility and are reaping benefits of this responsibil- ity. Being a sophomore is a challenge but we're tackling it. We are the proud class of '83. 35 Paul Adamson James Albers Brenda Anderson Janet Anderson Judy Anschutz Diane Appel Allison Arness Linda Aumer Sharon Bartosh Carolyn Basinger Kathryn Bauer Don Bramstedt Ron Bramstedt Jill Bregel Brian Bucher Vaughn Corwin Thomas Crowell Martin Dahlke Daniel Davidson Daniel DeWanz Patrick Dorgan Yvonne Duerksen Michael Erbes Debra Farber Dawn Flatebo Danny Flatgard Kimberly Francis Kris Frantsen Brett Frederickson Scott Fredin Mark Fuller Jerry Giefer Brent Giese Angela Glidden John Gohman Rhonda Gove Thomas Griffin Gina Grothe Richard Hanson John Haraldson Kristin Harrington William Hartman Gail Hiebert Brian Holm Brian Holmen Daniel Horkey Lonny Hotzler Dennis Hurley Wendee Ihrke Laura Jessen Kevin Johnson Lisa Johnson Scott Johnson Todd Johnson Shari Kellen Kenneth Kremer Vicky Krueger Jeffrey Lange Verdeen Langland John Libra Jacquelyne Low Dean Lund Jolene Mayden Robyn McRunnel Pam Meyer James Mohlencamp Todd Mueller Scott Muller Kimberly Murphy Michelle Nerhus Boyd Nielsen Karen Nielsen Jodi Ohlrich Mark Olsen Lisa Osland Cynthia Pankonin Karen Paulson Lori Petersen Rex Potter Cheryl Rasche Larry Remund Roger Resh Thomas Sampson Kenneth Schaffer Brian Woizeschke Kevin Woizeschke Shelly Zimmer Karen Scheneman Bradley Schmidt Jodi Schneider Carmen Schulz Jodene Sell Raymond Shelstad Ingeborg Showman Dennis Smith Peggy Smith Clarence Soleta Karen St. John Richard Staerk Teri Steinberg Mary Steinfeldt Brett Stevens Chad Sunderman LeeAnn Sunderman Brian Swenson Sandra Thor Carol Ann Thorn Timmy Thulien Joseph Torkelson Sally Torkelson Connie VanVoorst Sarah Veender Lynda Voth Annette Vought Kay Dee Walinga Roy Walters Cheryl Wessels THE FRESHMAN CLASS Our freshmen year has been a challenge because we have more responsibility than ever before. We are representative of Windom wherever we go. We have our own choices and can go into any field we like. As the youngest class, we have been harassed by the upper classmen, but we are gaining acceptance. The classes are harder, but we expect them to be. The sports are more challenging because you compete with other towns and you meet new people. In summary the freshman year is a year of gaining experience, facing new challenges and making new friends. 39 Marie Brandt Todd Brandt Michael Bregel Mark Brodin Bennie Byam Kelly Carey Karen Carrison Robin Courts Denise Defries Jeffrey Dehmlow David Derickson Jon Diemer Brenda Elness Darla Engler Laurel Erickson Janel Fawcett Debra Fetcho Heather Florine Anne Foley Kelly Frantsen Deann Franz Bartt Frederickson Delbert Friesen James Froderman Michael Giefer Lisa Grant Jody Greiner Timm Gronseth Tammy Grunewald Belle Hagemeyer Melvin Halverson Wendy Halvorson Mark Hansen Patricia Hansen Mari Haugen Paul Hauschild Timothy Hayenga Todd Hedquist Brenda Higley Robert Hirsch Donna Hochstein Lori Jackson Russell Janssen Carolyn Johnson Rick Johnson Steven Jurgens Karen Keffeler Connie Kellen Kristi Kelly Jeffrey Kepler Dawn Knorr Dawn Krueger Scott Kuecker Susan Kunerth John Lanz Billee Larson Debra Larson Lisa Larson Michelle Larson Mark Lober Tamara McBride Steven McRunnel Lisa Maras Timothy Moe Daryl Moede Todd Moller Rhonda Nelson Marian Nichols Marilyn Nichols Chad Nolt Kraig Odden Audra Oltmans Jeffrey Olson Michael Ortmann Jon Paden Carol Paulson Marlin Piotter Bonnie Polesky Alan Wood Kristi Yonker Jerry Ysker Jennifer Zunkel Bret Raverty Lori Rehnelt Scott Renczykowski Dennis Richardson Theresa Ring Keith Rossow Jodi Sacks Bradley Samdal Mark Sandbo Tamara Sargent Aimee Schmidt Jeffrey Schwalbach Patricia Seberson Daniel Sell Lisa Sneer Mary Sotebeer Kenneth Stahl Denise Stauffacher Lane Steele David Swenson Colleen Tasler Laurie Voshage John Weiland Paula Winkel SPECIAL SERVICES Laurie Mickey Tim Dale Patti Greg Jon Robert Brandi Clausen Fast Grunig Horkey Jones Sydness Voit CARLOS HOLGUIN Carlos Holguin is a charming 17 year old, who is staying in Windom with the Omar Amundsons. He is from Palmira, Columbia, a city of 200,000 people. Carlos has an older sister who is 19, a younger brother who is 14, and another sister who is 12. His father is an agronomist and the manager of a seed company. His mother is a housewife. Carlos goes to an all boy Catholic school, the name of which is 'Seminario De Cristo Sacerdote'. About 250-300 boys attend. He takes 12 different classes each week. Each day his class schedule is different. The teachers move around to classrooms instead of the students. Some of the classes he takes in Palmira are Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Education, English, Spanish, French, Latin, and Greek. Carlos rides a bus to school. There are from 16-23 students in a classroom. Carlos likes Windom's school because girls attend also. Soccer is the big sport in Columbia. Carlos participates on the soccer team in school. In his spare time, in Palmira, Carlos goes to the Country Club. There he can swim, bowl, play soccer, basketball, pinball, pool or 'billar' which is similar to pool. Carlos misses having a car, and being able to drive around on weekends. He says they listen to a lot of American music in Columbia. He says ''We don't understand the words, but we like the rhythms. Carlos is a very good dancer and likes to play the guitar, ne also likes to read. He brought with him to America two Spanish books: Confieso Que He Vivido by a Nobel prize winning author from Chile, Pable Neruda; and the Spanish version of the New Testament. Carlos says he likes Windom and its school. He also likes living with the Amundsons. He says Windom is very different from his home town of Palmira, but he likes this town. He says, In a small town you get to know all of the people. You can confide in everyone. Carlos we think you're pretty special. We wish you luck in all you do!!! 44 TIMO KUPILA Timo Kupila comes to us from Hyvinkaa Finland, a town of 37,000 people, 40 miles from the coast. Timo is 17 years old. Fie has light brown hair and big blue eyes. Timo has 1 older sister, and 2 younger brothers. His father is an engineer and his mother works in a hospital. Timo is staying with the Mick Christians family. Timo says school in Finland is much harder than school here. He takes about 14 different classes in Finland. Some of these are Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, English, Finish, German, Swedish, Biology, Philosophy, and Sports. Many of these subjects are required such as the four languages that he takes. Timo participates in several sports: Hockey, Tennis and Baseball. I asked Timo if the native group ABBA was still popular in Finland. He said yes but they listen to more American and English music in Finland. Timo also said that they eat mostly the same foods in Finland as we eat here. They don't have hotdogs and hamburgers though. Timo said that school takes up much of his time in Finland. He said the tests are much harder than they are here, but you don't get as many. In his spare time away from school Timo practices sports, watches some (but very little) T.V., goes to movies, and used to collect stamps. Timo says nearly all the people in Finland are Lutheran just as ne is. I asked Timo if he had a job in Finland. He said no but he did work on the construction of the new house his family was building last summer. He said it is not completed yet. When asked how he likes it here Timo said he likes it, but its harder to shop and do other things in such a small town. We'll miss you Timo. Good luck in the future!!! Everyone seemed to be involved in all the activi- ties. The activities started Monday, with uniform day. This is when the students dressed in their special uniform. That night there was the powderpuff football game. Sweat sock sweeties vs. the Bobby sock babies. During half time there was the tug of war contest against the classes. The sophomore class was on top. Tuesday was hat day the great marshmellow push contest. Tourist day was on Wednesday. Many students dressed as funny looking tourists. During lunch they had a banana eating contest. To top the week off we had, Windom Eagles Lookin' Good Day, the coronation and the pep feast. The 1980 fall queen and king were Patty Lund and Joe Freck- ing. Mistress and Master of cermonies were Sue Nystuen and Kelly Krebs. The Football game on Friday nigh was an exciting one. The Windom Eagles defeated the Slayton Wildcats, with the score of 14-12. A dance featuring Fast Eddie , followed the game. WINTER HOMECOMING Winter Homecoming, better known as Greek Week , got off to a sure fire good start on Mon- day, January the 26th. We had warm weather and warm spirits to ensure us a week of great fun. Monday started it all off with the Indian wrestling competitions. Tuesday was a trip back in time to the Sixties , where everyone dressed as hippies and chants of peace, love, and Heck no we won't go were sounded through the halls. That same evening the Eagle wrestlers gave us a great effort at home in their meet against Mt. Lake, though they didn't manage to come up with a win. Wednesday was the traditional uniform day where you could see the faithful and the true to the Blue Eagles dressing up in athletic uniforms, cheerleading uniforms, pep band uniforms, one- act play attire, etc. I'm sure most will admit that Thursday was the most memorable day, next to Friday, the day of coronation. It was the day that all of us Greek Weekers dressed up in our To- gas. And that evening our sizzling girls' basketball team brought off their 12th win of the season. To finish off the week's activities we had Greek Week coronation on Friday. Our master and mis- tress of ceremonies were Kevin Oakman and Pam Beam, who did a fine job. The deserving male candidates were Dale Earlewine, Kelly Krebs, Brett Johnson, Tim Vang and our 1981 King, Doug Solem, who replied in his speech to the admiring crowd Come to the game tonight folks. It'll be the first time in ages that I won't have to sweep the floors . Our charming female candidates were Teresa Harrington, Sue Nystuen, Christie Grunewald, Anna Maras and our lovely 1981 Queen, Laurie Johnson. That evening both our wrestlers and our boys' basketball teams pulled off victories. And after all of the excitement we were pleased to be entertained by an excellent band by the name of Easy . The week was well worth all the work that went into making it a success. Thanks goes out to everyone that helped in mak- ing it so! 109 ONE ACT PLAY This year's One-Act Play was The Brick and the Rose by John Carlino. It was a poignant story of a young boy whose search for meaning and love in life ended in a dependency on drugs and a tragic death. Although set in the big city, its story of drugs and adolescent disallusionment is relevent to today's youth. The cast did an excellent job at districts and was chosen alternate to regions.
