i They said... Close your umbrella, and give the sun a chance to shine The joys of life will surround you-- Don't block them out from your life — Open your eyes. So... And.. . I closed my umbrella and the sun shone brightly, My eyes were open For only a little while I opened it again. I had to! My eyes were not open to joy-- They were opened to a world filled with Hate, Jealousy, Prejudice. It was agony for me. Before, my umbrella shielded these terrors-- Please, let me keep it open ! Close yours. Face up to your own problems. Whether sunshine or gray clouds, A few drops of rain won't hurt you--- Besides.. . Raindrops fall even while the sun is shining -Ruth Keller The Eagle 1972-1973 Windom Area High School Windom, Minnesota In Dedication- Lyle Nolt Lyle Nolt was born on the eighth of June, 1908 in Alexandria, South Dakota. His parents, Grace and George Nolt, had a large family. When Lyle was very young the family moved to Fulton where his father operated a lumber yard. A few years later they moved to a farm south of Fedora, South Dakota, in Miner County, where they lived while most of the children were growing up. In 1928 Lyle married Ruth Ostrander and they moved to Mitchell, South Dakota, They lived there for five years, where three of their children were bom. In 1933 they moved to Jeffers, Minnesota, where the remainder of their seven children were bom, five of whom survived. In 1945 they moved to Windom and their children graduated from Windom High School. Lyle worked as a trucker, for the firms of Mulligan and Andrews and later for Horkey and Mann as a mechanic, before coming to his present job in the Windom School System, a position he has held for the past twenty years. He will retire in June this year, due to a bad back, requiring two painful spinal operations. The future seems uncertain, with no plans yet other than to relax at home and visit with his nineteen grand- children and two great-grandchildren, with a little work for a change of pace. He has made many good friends in his school connections and will certainly miss them all, as they will miss him. Today has been wonderful varied activities at times seeming to approach Impossible but carried out successfully! Today has been decorating building sets and acting for the first time. Today has been an experience positive negative often enriching sometimes disappointing. Now we find that our today has become a year. We have only now to prepare and then find our tomorrow within ourselves. 16 The play centered around Mrs. McThing, who had changed the normal Howay, played by Barry Amundson, into a stick boy. Mrs. Larue, being an average mother, decided to find the truth behind the rumor that Howay was working in a pool hall. The events that followed were funny. At the pool hall you met three normal gangsters, a chef, a waiter, a sweet mother, and a little girl named Mimi. The end was climaxed by the destruction of the sticks and the reuniting of a happy family. The sets were great, costumes were fantastic and lighting superb. The Junior Class thanks the director Mrs. Hoffmeister, the set directors, Mr. Marth and Mr. Johnson, and everyone that made the play possible. We also thank the public which made the play a success. Hohenstein Eagle Staff The editors of this year's annual were very busy. Of necessity, much help was offered and accepted in order to get the job done. This year, underclassmen were included on the staff, and much of the work of taking pictures, typing, and lay- ing out the pages was done by them. A big thank you goes to the camera club, Mr. Rhoda, our brave and fearless leader, the faculty for putting up with us, and the custodians who helped us on Saturdays. They all gave us tremendous cooperation. A special thanks goes to the Charles Miller family, whose house became our temporary headquarters, and who took us in at any time of the day or night. Thanks again. --the Editors Assistant Editor Deb Bloch, Co-Editor Rhonda Wojahn, Business Manager George Miller, Advisor Bruce Rhoda, Co-Editor Mary Frederickson 22 Row 1: Feature Editor C. Young Tatler Staff The Tatler, WAHS' monthly newspaper, is as familiar to stu- dents and faculty in our school as the Golden Eagle. For years it has served as a line of communication between students and their ad- ministration, students and their peers, and most importantly, the school and its community. This year, as always, it reported the events and activities which highlight school life. But an attempt was made by the entire staff to carry things one step further. Hopefully, this year's Tatler reflected the moods, reactions, and attitudes of the student body. The reporters, photographers, typ- ists and editors didn't just dig for news; they felt for the pulse of the school in an effort to make the paper a true reflection of our school's image. This year, under the new advisorship of Mr. Lindaman, the Tat- ler took on new dimensions as well as strengthening old ones. It was truly the Student Body's newspaper. - Kaye Vogel (Editor) Editor Kaye Vogel and Assistant Editors Barb Hoffmeister and Kris Lindvall 23 Kneeling: S. Holmen, B. Hanson, S. Nelson, R. Vogel, G. This structure is one body, called the General Assembly, which governs the four sub-bodies or the class assemblies. The three class officers from each class, our three foreign students, and three overall officers make up the General Assembly. Each Class Assembly was composed of its three class officers and six other representatives. Under this new structure the Student Council has been working very successfully. Assisting them in their efforts to reach these goals were the faithful Mr. Lindaman and his sidekick Mr. Johnson. Using the monthly program , knowledge was gained and skills were developed in areas related to speech. Impromptu speeches were given, dis- cussions on politics were held, and philosophies of drama were presented. Opportunities for public debuts were, of course, offerend to all of the members. Students participated in the annual Variety Show. This year it was entitled STONE SOUP and presented on December 19. Pancho Chauvet and Bruce Earlewine, instrumenting unique ideas, were masters of ceremonies. Once a month two members are given-the opportunity to make guest appearances on the KDOM Kaleidascope program, bringing school news to the community. Looking to another Declam season, nearly 100% of the members competed. They worked with the coaches in the category of their choice. In March the Windom Invitational was held and again it was the success of previous years. Opportunities were given to the whole school to see professional theatre. They sponsored trips to the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. Plans are made for improvement in the old auditorium. A new sound system was purchased by the Speech Club to further enhance these plans. Members, officers, and advisors, alike, found much to be gained in the schedule of the year's activities. 25 Row IsP. Slupe, L. Schmidt, President B. Spielman, Vice-President K. Nerhus, Secretary D. Perrance Student Action for Education Active and involved describes the members of Student Action for Education (formerly Future Teachers of America). Although the new name hasn't been completely ratified, the activities of the club reflected the new name with involvement in many educational situations. Along with the annual events, such as guides for parent-teacher conferences, monthly meetings, and the ban- quet at the Driftwood, the club sponsored a Book Fair, listened to speakers on student rights and student responsi- bilities and on Women's Liberation, took a trip to Swan Lake Day Activity Center, worked as ushers for the Va- riety Show, and had a Christmas Party. A special program involved teachers, administrative personnel, and other students in role playing. A formal installation of new officers in May gave evidence of another exciting year for the organization. This cheery note is delivered by the Candy- stripers. Candystripers work strictly on a volunteer basis. Each week she devotes about two hours of her time to her work. Insight in the field of nursing is gained each time she reports for duty. The greatest reward one can receive as a Candystriper is to know that you have helped to make some- one's day just a little bit brighter. 42 Row i: W. Soleta, M. Crowell, N. Story, R. Olson, R. Girls also practice and compete in gym- nastics and basketball. Parties are held at irregular intervals after school with games and lots of good food. So girls, if you seek energetic sports and want to have fun, come and join us at GAA. Kneeling: T. Giese, K. Lindvall, L. Wiese, H. Schneider, C. Riebc, A. Skogen, C. Hohenstein. Standing: M. Debate This year's debate squad, suffering the loss of last year's entire varsity team and an overall lack of experience, has done surpris- ingly well. Hard work and determination resulted in a marked improvement at each tournament. A highpoint in the season was when the varsity took second in the conference, losing only to Marshall. With the fine record held by this year's novece and varsity, and since we will be los- ing only one senior, we can see great poten- tial for next year's debating squad. Sitting: D. Meyers, C. Through this program the students of Windom's schools have been introduced to some new faces and through conversation, have heard different views of many different subjects, which have helped to widen our perspective. This year our Sortlander is Kjell Martinsen. His home is about thirty miles from Sortland where he attends the gymnas, in a place called Kanstadbotn. He has two brothers and a little sister at home, and has found that living with a family of all girls is just great! . Kjell saw some action as a fullback on the football team and manages to keep himself busy with a heavy schedule in school as well as many outside interests. Upon return to Norway, Kjell must finish at the Sortland Gymnas and then he hopes to enter the Norwegian Air Force and become a pilot. He is really looking forward to coming back to the United States for his flight training and we're all looking forward to seeing him again too! Good luck to a great guy! 98 Welf, Earl, Barb, Curt and Ann LaMaack Welf Schroeder Windom's Friends of Foreign Students Club also sponsors a student through the Youth for Understanding Exchange Program (YFU). This years' student is Welf Schroeder, from Kttln, Germany. Welf is a master of many musical instruments, including the guitar, sitar and flute. He sweated out a hot summer and early fall while practicing and playing football with the varsity team. His interests lie in the fields of talking, photography and girls. If you ever walk into the library and find a few people in what seems to be intense discussion, Welf will probably be there. Thanks to the FFS Club and his host family, the Earl LaMaacks, for bringing us another experience with international flavor. 99 Twila, Barry, Sonja, Pancho, Monte, Rita, Heidi, Randy, Eric and Omar Amundson Francisco Chauvet ENCHILADA, Mexican Cookery, a tortilla rolled and filled with a highly seasoned mixture, usually containing meat, and covered with a sauce flavored with chili. Our third exchange student comes to us from the country where this food, which may sound strange and may not even taste good to us, is common. Although he is called by many names, and most frequently Pancho, his name is Francisco Chauvet. After serving as translator and guide to a group of Luther Leagers from Minnesota, he was invited to return to the United States with them. Twila Amundson, a member of the group, invited him to live with her family. Pancho holds double citizenship, from France and Mexico, because his parents are both French born and is fluent in three languages. His quick wit and ever present T-shirt have become very dear to us all. Pancho also helped the cross country toward victory with his dazzling per- formances in the field. He will leave many good friends and aquaintances behind when he leaves. 100 SCHOOL LIFE DIVIDER 1972 Fall Homecoming Homecoming was a full week of activities again this year. Monday began the week of festivities with a 50's dress up day and dance. A school picnic was planned for Tuesday, but was canceled because of cold weather. A contest for the best dressed Tie, Top and Stomper was held on Wednesday, with the first prize going to Pancho Chauvet. Twila Amundson and Barney Dwight were crowned Homecoming King and Queen at Thursday morning's coronation ceremony. Attending them were Lynel Leverenz, Kevin Stevens, Sheryl Muir, Dave Hoffmeister, Becky Hegstad, Doug Miller, Pam Graue, Dan Fossing and crownbearers Tracy Teas and Chet Meyer. Thursday night was the Powder Puff game between the Bobby Sox Babies and the Sweat Sox Sweeties. Referees were able to keep the game under control and arranged a tied score. Friday night followed with another exciting game, when the varsity football team defeated Pipestone by a score of 22 to 6. A victory dance followed the game. 103 1973 Winter Homecoming Winter Homecoming Our snowless Winter Celebration began on Monday evening with a well-attended basketball game between the Super Seniors, coached by their Souper Coach Mr. Jenke, pitted against the Terrible Teachers. Even though the seniors had a large cheering section the game ended with the Terrific Teachers far in front of the Scrawny Seniors. Tuesday's Annual Pops Concert, presented by the band and choirs, was a near climax for many of the members of the groups. The choir presented a new type of concert format with narration written by Holly Prigge and Terry Cosgriff narrating, tying their six musical numbers together. The band again managed to delight the audience with their musical finesse and some novelty numbers. Friday morning's coronation of Brenda Fredin as Miss Pep and Gary Wiese as Mr. Pep was a happy occasion for all involved. Attending Brenda and Gary were Julie Flatgard, Darwin Ray, Mary Frederickson, George Miller, Kaye Vogel, Bruce Turner, Rhonda Wojahn and Bruce Aamot. Honorary crownbearers were Mary Ratzlaff and John Lesch. The week's festivities were completed with a pep fest and all of our dreams were realized as the Eagles came home with a victory over Worthington. A dance followed in the commons with the Laurel Ambush playing. 105 One-Act Play: “Taming of the Shrew” Windom's entry in the District Seven Drama Contest, a cutting from Shakespeare’s famous ’’Taming of the Shrew , was rated A-, A, A- by the three judges and selected as alternate to the Region II contest. Joli Johnson was awarded Outstanding Performance by Actress of the entire contest for her excellent portrayal of Katharina. Members of the cast were Dudley Smith as Lucentio, Jenny Pace as Bianca, Mark Schmalz as Baptista, Twila Amundson as Grumella, Terry Cosgriff as Biondello, Joli Johnson as Katharina, Roger Gregg as Petruchio, Carol Riebe as Maria and Gary Elston as Hortensio. Technical assistants were Jane Twait, Stuart Reid and Todd Hegstrom. The play was directed by Mrs. David Campbell. 107 Des Moines River Eagles Go to State LATE REGULAR SEASON SCORES Windom 74 Pipestone 53 Windom 64 Redwood Falls 51 Windom 64 Marshall 49 Windom 72 F airmont 55 Windom 63 Luverne 54 SUB-DISTRICT Windom 60 Mt.
