Eighth Grade News Af fhe beginning of fhis school year we had sixfeen girls and eighfeen boys who were from all secfions of Windham, There were fwo ofhers who enfered our class during fhe year. They were Rufh McLucas from fhe Bean Memorial in Brownfield who enferecl November 2 I , I947 and Paul Merrifield who was ouf fhe firsf of fhe year because of sickness. He became a member of our class Sepfember I9, I947. There were fhree people who ieff our class during fhe year. They were John Cannell, Roland O'Leary, and Carolyn Allen. Walfer Cram leff us affer affencling a few days. There were five pupils who have nof been absenf fhis year. They are Pafricia Day. Erdine Libby, Jennie Varney, Milfon Rogers, and James Larrivee. Democracy Il is a big word, isn'l il-lhal word democracy? Whal does il mean? Well, if you should ask each one of l30,000,000 people you would probably gel one hundred and lhirly million dilferenl answers. Bul here is mine. My idea of a democracy began a long lime ago. Once upon a dream some independenlly minded, brave hearled souls began lo lhink for lhemselves and began rebelling againsl lyrannies. ll was seen even back in lhe lime of lhe Greeks and Romans, bul on quile a small scale. Our own America really began for a free people when lhal valianl lillle group of Pilgrims sel oul from Europe for lhese shores and a new shining hope. They wanled lhe righl lo pray and worship God-lhe same God lhal made lhis old earlh in lhe firsl place-lhe way lhey pleased. Jusl lhink! Whal fools men are! Tyranny in lhal lime was forbidding men lo worship lhe God of all crealion and selling up lheir own rules of religion, jusl as some of lhe same imbeciles are lrying lo do loday. Even inside our democracy lhey are alrlempl- ing lo do iusl lhal. Bul democracy means lhal I can go lo church on Sunday or any olher day. I can be an everyday Chrislian, and a real one! l'll nol pussyfool around and lry lo make oul lhal I am on lhe side of lhese infidels who blaspheme lhe name of lhe Lord Jesus al every lurn and lhen go lo church on Sundays and prelend lo be so holy. I can sland up and speak my mind before commoners or kings wilh no fear as lo whelher or nol my head may be chopped off before sundown. Educalion, wonderful books full of a lhousand and one lhings lo learn every day of my life. leachers who have my welfare on lheir minds, as well as lhe welfare of olher sludenls, sporls equipmenl. clubs, friends. food, clolhing and sheller, luxuries of all sorls are al my disposal in lhis greal democracy. ll means everylhing lhal is good. ll I iusl reach oul and lake il, lhere is opporlunily al my door! As long as lhere is an America. and as long as lhere is my Lord, nolhing is impossible! We are lhe luckiesl people on earlh. There will ever be new horizons lo look forward lo, lhere will ever be hope for humanily if we realize whal lhis democracy means lo lhe world. Basketball The eighth grade boys played three games ot basketball this year. Two games were played with Gorham and Frederick Robie, both of which we lost, We played and won one game with the Freshman. There were more names than eighth graders, but with the help ot the seventh grade in the Center School, all the names were taken care ot. A committee ot tour was chosen to go with Mrs. Simmons and Mrs. Hodgdon to distribute the presents. They were Ruth McLucas, Patty Day, Raymond Eastup, and James Larrivee. Magazine Drive At the beginning ot the year, the eighth grade students sold magazines, We bought materials for handicraft with the money earned.
