A high- light of the athletic season for the band was the combined formation of the Manchester and Windham bands at Manchester during the Armistice Day football game. There were three parades this year. On Memorial Day the band marched with the towns of Mansfield and Coventry. These two organizations also took part in the Flag Day parade of the Elks and the Liberty Bell Bond Drive sponsored by the city of Willimantic. Roger Parks represented the band at the All State Festival. The orchestra, which numbered about 50 players this year, was one of the largest that Windham has had. It first performed at the dedication of the Gymnasium-Classroom Building in November. At Christmas it took part in the Christmas program of the Music Department. A smaller group accompanied the operetta, The Count and the Coed. The whole group has appeared at assemblies and also at graduation. Since Christmas the Majorettes have been fortunate in having the assistance of Barbara Hrosen- chick, a freshman at the University of Connecticut who won the National Baton Twirling Champion- ship at St. Louis last summer. She has done a great deal in a short time to improve their twirling. To help finance their activities the Majorettes assisted with some of the Y football dances, sold pencils bearing the basketball schedule, and sold souvenior basketball programs. Some of the Majorettes have also assisted in activities outside of school. They have marched twice in parades for the K. of C., a group led the Hallowe'en parade, a large group marched with the band on Memorial Day in the towns of Mansfield and Coventry for the American Legion Post, and a group also marched with the band in the parade on Flag Day sponsored by the Elks. In addition to the usual entertainment afforded by an amusement park the girls had the opportunity to watch contestants in the New England Twirling Contest which was being held on that day. The Hobby Club was organized during the past year under the direction of Mrs. Florence U. Grady for freshmen and sophomores. Several members of the faculty spoke to the club on such hobbies as photography, stamps, foods, fly-tying, baseball, and child development. Qaaffaff On Saturday afternoon, November 15, the Windham High School football team completed its first unbeaten and untied season since 1924 by subduing a good East Hartford team 15.0. The game was marked by hard line play and terrific running by Tillie DuBose, which were earmarks of the Windham team throughout the entire season. Although the Whippets lacked size, they made up for this loss by speed, finesse, and general fundamental ability. Many of the boys who played on the first team were veterans of two or three seasons, which took some of the burden of teaching the first fundamentals from the shoulders of Coaches Andy Palau and Jack Deady. Gone from the fold next year will be such standout line- men as: Al Kilburn, Ron Hernberg, Chas. Auger, and Dick Battey. In the backfieldsuch performers as: Frank Cutko, Steve Vadnais and Tillie DuBose will not be seen again. Tillie DuBose, the most versatile back Windham has seen in many a year, was chosen to the All-State first team. His running mate, Frank Cutko, was given an honorable mention award. Good luck to these boys, wherever they go, for they were tops in everything they did. Coach Palau and Co-Captains Hernberg and DuBore SUMMARY Windham ..... ..... 1 9 Norwich ..... Captain Steve Vadnair and C oacla Callaghan JKZZJM On June 8th, Windham High School completed another successful season. Although mother nature in the form of rain played havoc with the Whippets' schedule, they man- aged to hang up eight victories against three defeats. The Windham outlook was very optimistic with Rod O'Donnell, junior curve ball artist, doing the heavy mound duties. Although Windham did not have another pitcher to match O'Donnell, Russ Galipo, Tom Sullivan and joe Rasi- cot proved to be very successful on various occasions. On the offensive side Willie Rivers was the big gun with his potent bat swinging at a fast clip. Captain Steve Vadnais, Frank Cutko, and Dick Battey of the seniors were other long hitters along with Bill Pardus, joe Narotsky, and Al Saba. George Smith and O,Donnell, who patrolled the outfield when he wasn't pitching, rounded out the initial squad. The Windham fans witnessed some exciting games at Recreation Park. The 5-4 thriller against Chapman Tech when Vadnais slid home with the winning run in the 10th inning, and Rod O'Donnell's two-hitter against New London Bulkeley which the Whippets won 6-1 will long be remem- bered. The baseball season climaxed a great athletic year for Windham High. Carmen Adams and Howard Weldon were elected to the Athletic Council, and Mrs. Mahoney was chosen Faculty Advisor. The Seniors opened the dance season with the Harvest Hop, which was held Friday, October 21, at the Town Hall. Jeanne Viner-was the chairman of the committee. Carmen Adams and Howard Weldon were chosen Queen Acorn and King Corn. The traditional Christmas Ball took place in Case Gymnasium, December 17. This was an epoch-making event since it marked the first time for many years that Windham had a place of its own in which to hold its formal dances. Ruth Robinson was the general chair- man. Patricia Kramer and Ronald Hernberg were chosen King and Queen Frost. The Senior Class Party, Lollipop Parade, was held on Friday, March 16, in the cafe- teria. Balloons, lollipops, games, dancing, and entertainment made the evening a memorable one. On Monday, June 19, the class went to Ocean Beach for the outing and banquet. Wally Lohr was chairman of the affair and was also toastmaster at the banquet. In spite of the cold and cloudy weather everyone had a good time. The Senior Reception was held on Tuesday, June 20, in Case Gymnasium, which was decorated for the occasion by the juniors. Enid Dudley was general chairman of the dance. The climax to our high school career was our graduation on Wednesday evening, June 21, in Case Gymnasium. Dr. P. Roy Brammell was the graduation speaker, and the diplomas were presented by Mr. Stanley J. Sumner, chairman of the Board of Education. 90 ufubt tcm Dancing to muxic hy the Connecticut Collegiam The Jinging waiter!
