This year its first project was sponsoring the annual Home Com ing. Second aphotographer from North Manchester came and took individual pictures of everyone in school. Some fine assembly programs were enjoyed by the stu- dent body, thanks to the Council. After the Friday night games the Council helped to spon- sor some of the cut the rug sock hops. Mr. Scott was our sponsor that first year, and he successfully guided us through our activities which included booths at the Halloween Carnival and two class parties. Mrs. Martin sponsored both our sophomore andjunior years. As jun- iors we found ourselves quite busy with the concession stand at home games, one class play, and the Junior-Senior Prom added to our regular list of projects. We also attended a session of the Indiana General As- sembly which we found extremely interesting. The efforts of all twenty-eight of us and Mrs. Whitehead made our many senior projects successful. We planned and held the Halloween Carnival, sold ice cream at noon and at ballgames, and exceeded our one thousand dollar goal in selling magazine subscriptions. These things and our class play have made possible our senior trip. We are looking for- ward to it with great anticipation. President ...... . . John Davis Vice-President ...... I, John Davis will my perpetual toothpick to Luther Larson. 16 By means ofa time machine recently perfected in the laboratory of Winfall High School, we, the Class of '56, are able to travel into the future and see ourselves as we will be a few years from now. In the future we see that Liz Riffe is the owner of a chewing gum factory. Seems she got tired of begging gum. And there's Don Duck Fisher, racing at Armscamp--trying to make extra money for the little quacks , at home. While still at the speedway, we find Robert Johnson driving a bar car. His old Ford just couldn't make the grade. Rex Retherford owns a chain of Drive-in Theaters. He learned the business from the top down while still a student at Windfall. Charlie Knotts is happily married to Roberta Fowler. We find Reba Waddell back in the hospital. Her fourteen children have just had their tonsils removed. Keith Martin is now in the Air Force. Keith says he would much rather take or- ders from a teacher than from his sergeant. Betty Lange is married and lives on a Mitchell Farm. Howsadl Marlene Tolle is still working at the Tipton Hospital and isstill single. It seems that she never did find that poor, helpless, male patient. Barbara Lewellen has opened her own air school. Keith Martin has become her favorite ace. Ruth Ann Tolle has made a career of the army. She is presently stationed at the North Pole. Donald Fennell finally won a race. He's been midget racing every night for the last fifteen years. Lily Miller has really come up in the world, She is the head mambo instructor for Arthur Murray. Benny Ryan still lives in Windfall. He missed being in school so much that he decided to go back as a bus driver. David Francis is the World's Champion Drag Racer. He also runs his own drag strip. What's this? Cecil Wood owns a farm in Vermont, of all places. He raises chic- kens by the thousands. Rebecca Osbom is ahappy housewife living in her eighty-five room cottage. Wes says five rooms for every member. On a recent trip to Califomia, Peggy Blessing married Gary Crosby. They live in Beverly Hills with their six adopted war orphans. The Crosbys' next -door neighbor is Gwin Fisher. He is a famous movie director and has traded his scooter for a new '65 Cadillac. John Davis, after getting married and having three kids, has become a star player for the Brooklyn Dodgers. We see Joyce Edwards, a farmer's wife. cooking, washing. and taking care of her seven red -headed kids. Fred McCorkle holds the distinctive position of national president of the F.F.A. Don Yundt is the star of the Ohio State track team. He just cleared the 15' 10 mark. Wanda McCorkle hasn't been seen since she left on the first rocket trip to the moon. Purdue gets most of its new information from Larry Bogue, who conducts experi- ments on his twenty -acre farm in Tipton County. Well, what do you know! Ian Cain is teaching agriculture at Windfall School un- der the direction of Mr. Scott. Fred Avery has advanced to the rank of general in the National Guard. Mary Bunnell just finished producing afilm entitled Social Problems of the Short Girl in connection with her charm school. 17 017' X H Y- 1' X V. . Larson, Mr. Drake, 746 As we come nearer to the end of our high school days, we look back on many pleasant memories. Three years ago our class entered the realm of high school. The highlights of that year were our Style Show and Pie Walk at the Halloween Carnival and the ordering of our class rings. Our sophomore year will be remembered as the year we ordered our class sweaters. We also had the Dart Throw and Fish Pond at the Halloween Carnival, and decorated a float for our first Homecoming. We had many things to look forward to this year. Selling pop, candy, etc. at the home games, decorating our float, our Variety Show, Dart Throw, and Turkey Raffle at the Halloween Carnival, our class play, and our prom. Sponsored by FIRST FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN Kokomo, Indiana 19 P . gg., we s eww ,M aww It appears as though we have been adopted by the Sharps. Since our enrollment in Junior High, either Mr. or Mrs. Sharp has been our sponsor. The high points in our Junior High School were the magazine sales and popularity contest. Suellen Sloan was our winner, and we were very proud of her. As sophomores in 1955 we were thirty-five in number and were guided by Mr. Sharp. Under his leadership we had the cider and dough- nut stand and the Cake Walk at the Halloween Carnival. Both projects were successfully carried out. The members of the class have chosen turquoise and white class sweaters. President .... . . Bill Walsh Vice-president . . . . Carol Kinder Secretary . . . . Bonnie Victory Treasurer . . Hats off, one two! --very familiar words to all band members. They were part of some of the clever new marching routines developed by Mrs. Powell for the four floor shows which the band pre- sented at basketball games. In addition, the marching band again led the Homecoming Parade, and also a Pet Parade sponsored by the Windfall Merchants. The most important event, of course, was the marching contest at Southport at which the band received a first division rating. The reward for this victory was a trip to Lafayette to attend the Purdue vs. Michigan State football game. The majorettes had a busy season, too. Fanchon Francis and .Toanne Justice won first for twirling solos at Southport and second in the All-State contest at Butler University. They later presented their routines at a ballgame, and Trudy, Kay, and Joanne presented a twirling ensemble using lighted batons. After the first semester emphasis on marching, the concert band began working toward the spring contest, hoping to do a repeat of last year's first at Selma. Also, several instrumental solos and four ensembles were en- tered in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Muncie. Now the band is again playing Pomp and Circumstancen in preparation for Commencement. Theynever stop practicing! During the year it has been in demand for several programs both in and out of school. The first was the an- nual school Christmas program when the chorus members portrayed the characters of the Christmas Story in a pageant, The Blessed Nativity. In January the group was invited to sing two special numbers at the Windfall Methodist Church revival meeting. The chorus also presented aSunday evening musical program at the Greentown Christian Church where Mr. Mitchell, our trustee, is the minister. This pro- gram consisted of group numbers, solos, and congregational singing, with Mrs. Powell and the chorus in charge. Several of these same groups and soloists entered the contest at Muncie, January 28. It was held one week earlier than usual, so they had to work especially hard. Since Christmas, with a slight interruption by the operetta, the chorus has been practicing, first for the con- test, and now for Baccalaureate. These are the last two appearances in an extremely full and varied year. 42 ri 5 WV' ff! - In 744: cmchfa The primary purpose of the junior high chorus is to give its members singing experience. After learning to carry a part, sight read, and perform before an audience, they are prepared to sing more difficult music when they reach high school. The result of all this preparation is an improvement in the high school chorus, and a good junior high chorus, too. Windfallis no exception. On Wednesday, November 2, the Windfall Dragons traveled to Walnut Grove for their first game of the season. Being a little nervous, the Dragons made many mistakes. When the final score was written, the Wolves were defeated 69 to 48. Scoring honors went to Jones for a total of 22 points, Burkhardt 20, and Francis 16. On Friday, November 4, the Dra- gons were hosts to Easterrfs Comets. This was Homecoming for Windfall High School. The gym was crowded with loyal fans from both schools. The parade had been a successg the queen was to be crownedg everyone was tense with anticipation. The game was on. Windfall Dragons were out played by the Comets and met defeat. Final score: 72 to 65. Scoring honors went to Francis with 20 points and Burkhardt with 16. For their third game of the season the Dragons met Jefferson Town- ship. The Dragons were ahead most of the way. Then with only seven seconds to go Jefferson Township stole the ball for a layup, edging the Dragons 64 to 63. Francis was high point man for the Dragons with a total of 20 points. Next in line came the Qtraditional must win , game of the year. The opponents were the Sharpsville Bull- dogs. Final score: 82 for Windfall and 74for Sharpsville. Francis and Burkhardt were responsible for 62 points. W ii The Dragons were all set to journey to Noblesville to meet the Tigers from Fishers. The Dragons sent the Tigers home without their stripes. Final score: 81 - 64 in favor of Windfall. Francis and Burkhardt were again high point men. December 7 the St. Mary's Gaels of Anderson invaded the Dragons' Den in a hard-fought battle for the Gaels. The Dragons took advantage of their opposition and sent them home on the short end of an 87-55 score. Burkhardt and Jones added Z2 and 21 points respectively. For their sixth win of the season the Dragons encountered the Prairie Aces. Without much trouble the Dragons tromped the Aces 53-52. 5.5 fi 4 if High point man was Burkhardt. Mr. Drake then readied his Dra- gons for his former Western Pan- thers , who came to Windfall as lively as ever. The Dragons soon tamed them down with a 62 - 53 score. Burkhardt and Jones with Z3 and 2.1 points led the scoring. During the Christmas holidays the Dragons traveled to Anderson to play in a four way tourney invol- ving St. Mary's, Frankton, Knights- town, and Windfall. For their first game the Dragons downed the St. Mary'sGaels 61-56. The next night the Dragons clipped the Frankton Eagles' wings to win the champion- ship game 63-40. High point men in the tournament were Burkhardt, Jones, and Francis. Saturday, January 7, found the Dragons traveling to Noblesville to battle with the Carmel Greyhounds. The Dragons met with little diffi- culty and led the Greyhounds all the way. Final score: 74-51, with Charlie Jones tossing in 33 points. January 14 was County Tourna- ment time, and Windfall was one of four teams journeying to Tipton for the meet. Their first opponents were the Prairie Aces. The Aces were easily dumped to the tune of 82-54. For the last game of the meet the Dragons came face to face with the Jefferson Yankees. The Yankees had been one of two teams that had beaten the Dragons during the season, they succeeded in dumping the Dragons asecond time. The final score was 4 7-50. High point men for the tourney were Burkhardt, Jones, and Francis. Anderson Highland was the next stop for the Dragons. Coach Drake' s boys rolled an easy victory, scoring 77 points while the Highlanders tossed in 42. points. Jones led the scoring with Z5 points, while Francis and Burkhardt each contributed 20 points. On February 3, Jackson Central played host to the Dragons at the Noblesville Armory. This was the game of the season, a real thriller all the way. With only 50 seconds to go Windfall trailed by three points. Burkhardt hit a jump shot, followed by a tie-up between Jones and Mel- ling of Jackson Central. The Dra- gons called time out. Coach Drake must have given some good advice. The boys set up a tip off play that worked, giving Francis a lay up. Burkhardt stole the ball and passed to Jones for a final bucket. Burk- hardt and Jones each scored 16 points and Francis tossed in 14. Back home again to meet the Eagles from Frankton. The plays were laid up for Jones and Francis who scoredatotal of 55 points. The Dragons came out on top 79-73. The Frankton game was followed by a sock hop sponsored by the Sunshine Girls. On St. Valentine's Day, Windfall visited Sharpsville for a second game of the season. The Bulldogs opened the scoring and gave every indication that if the Dragons were to win the game they would have to do it the hard way. However, the Dragons pulled ahead in the first quarter and remained out front for the rest of the game, coming through with an easy victory 86-53. Box scores are as follows: FG FT PF Francis 7 6 1 Jones 7 l 3 Burkhardt 9 4 1 Retherford 3 3 1 Davis 6 O 1 Bogue 0 O 0 Cardwell O 0 0 Bunnell 3 O 0 Y undt 1 O l For the final game of the season Coach Drake and his Dragons visited the new Gym of the Northwestern Tigers. The Dragons broke into the led 4-O before the Tigers made a basket. The Dragons led 15-12, 32- 26, and 47-44 in the first three quarters only to be passed in the final period. High scoring Dave Francis and Chuck Jones once again led the attack - both finishing with redhot shooting percentages. Jones ended with ten field goals and one free toss and Francis with fourteen markers from the field and three free tosses. The Dragons closed out the pre- tournament season with 16 wins against 4 losses. Coach Drake and his men are in excellent condition for the Sectional which is scheduled to open at the Noblesville Gymnasium on February 22. The school band struck off the parade, leading it through the downtown streets. The parade consisted of many unique floats which displayed the imagination and originality of the students of old WHS. The first place in the float contest was captured by the Senior Class. while the Sophomores took second place. The most exciting part of the celebration was when the pretty queen candidates floated onto the floor and the queen was crowned by Miss Patty Parrish, 1954 Homecoming Queen. Elected as queen was Fanchon Francis, while Marlene Tolle, Patty Lacey, Reba Waddell, Julia Ericson, Peggy Blessing, and Wanda McCorkle, were chosen members of her court. In five years of observation Ihave noticed several different types, and have probably been numbered with most of them myself, There is the seventh grader who lives in mortal fear of being late. Five minutes seems like such a short time that he races from one class, only to wait four and a half minutes for the next class to begin. It always takes a few years for us to realize that it's possible to slow dovm a little and still have some time to spare, Sound familiar? If not, just keep your eyes open for a few days and see! The Mighty Dragons will meet the Prairie Aces in the County Tournament January 14th, They will play the first game of the afternoon in the Tipton gym. Earlier in the season Windfall defeated Prairie by a 53-32 score, Of the four school participating Windfallhas the best record with eleven wins and two losses, The second game of the afternoon will find Sharpsville playing against the powerful Jefferson team. In the morning the junior varsity team will play. The Windfall cubs will play Sharpsville, leaving Jefferson against Prairie, 'Sana The Student Council is sponsoring an assembly program Monday January 16, 1956. Sportsmanship is the skill or ability to participate in sports involving honest rivalry and graceful acceptance ofthe result of the play, Sometimes the results may not suit you or your school, still it is best to accept the results and think about what you did wrong and try not to make the mistake twice. Who could forget that variety show, or some of the faces that came out of the beauty salon. Of course the evening wouldn't be complete without the cake and pie walks, and the fish pond. The most popular place with the kids was the concession stands. The raffles and movies were a usual part of the festival. The most exciting time was when prizes were given to the best dressed in the parade, and when the door prizes were given away. The Future Farmers of America is a national organi- zation for boys interested in agriculture and the future of farming. The Windfall chapter has been very active in school and community life. The F.F.A. boys took a trip to the Farm Mechanization Show inEast Lansing, Michigan last summer. To obtain money for this trip, they sold garden seed and rat poison. The members got plenty of practical experience in farming when they rented and farmed seven acres of land. During time out for recreation, the boys formed softball and basketball teams.
