SENIOR CLASS HISTORY luly 29, 1946 was a memorable day for us. There were thirty-three girls wending their way toward Windber Hospital to take the Entrance Examination of the Windber School of Nursing. We all met in the living room of the Nurses' Home before going downstairs to the classroom for the Big Test. Four o'clock that Monday afternoon we were all exhausted, mentally and physical- ly. Homeward bound and somewhat re- lieved, We began wondering whether we had succeeded in the first step of our nurs- ing career. September 8, l946 twenty-two new stu- dents entered the portals of the Nurses' Home. We got our room assignments and tried to orient ourselves. We went to bed that night weary and strained-not know- ing what to expect on the morrow. It was lights out when such questions as How old are you? Do you have any brothers or sisters? Where do you live? Do you feel strange? were answered. October l0, we donned our new uni- forms for the first time and went to gradua- tion exercises in a body. What a time those black ties gave us. October 29 we again put on our uni- forms and went over to the hospital wards for the first time-the real taste of hospital activity. My, the excitement and jibbering that day. After two hours on the floor, we felt as if we had worked one week straight. So tired! ! ! Then we had Christmas vacation. Four days to relate experiences and familiarize our parents with the first four months of our training. And they listened so well! ! I Shortly before Capping Exercises we had our election of officers. Positions taken were: President, Imogene Nicholson, Vice President, Marian Heckartf Secretary, Ioan Adamsg Treasurer, Esther Kissell. Our class motto and flower were decided upon at a later date. March 6, 1947 we pledged ourselves into the Nursing Profession. We had nineteen girls left to carry on for the class of '49. How well we remember saying the Florence Nightengale Pledge, carrying the Nighten- gale Lamp, and receiving those Caps. Summer vacation in May, Iune, or Iuly and we felt like veterans. ln late summer of '47 Windber School of Nursing took in a new class. What a wonderful feeling we had when we were no longer the young students. We were almost as excited as they Were. lt was after those summer months that our class took a sudden decrease. We only had thirteen students from the Class of '49 in our midst the following spring. Many of us were already advancing through our special curricula such as diet kitchen, pediatrics, and surgery. And how we loved it! ! ! Work, we did, but learn, we must. So forward! The Hallowe'en Party we had for the new class was quite a success. We had black cats, witches, slimy gloves, spider webs and corn stalks everywhere. It was also at this party that we received little sisters to guide and help in any way pos- sible. We initiated the girls that night too. Did those poor rooms take a beating-and they were downstairs enjoying themselves! The summer of '48 we had a Banquet for the Graduating Seniors. This gala affair was held at the Palace Hotel. We ate like mad and paid for it afterward. September 8, 1948 we were full fledged seniors. Some four of our class were already on psychiatric affiliation in Philadelphia. This 'course of three months broadened our thoughts about mentally ill patients and is an experience never to be forgotten. Ianuary, l949 found our class with twelve student nurses. We have lost almost half of the original class in two and one-half years. We have come a long way together and we realize that graduation from this training school is not the completion but only the beginning of our Nursing Career. I SHALL NOT PASS AGAIN THIS WAY.
