HISTORY OF THE HOSPITAL When ground was broken tor the erection ot the Windber Hospital, there was little to guide the founders ot the institution in the selection ot a site which forty-three years' experience has proven most desirable trom every viewpoint. Spacious grounds, not too close to busy highways, yet convenient- ly reached from main thoroughtares, provide an ideal environment tor the hospitalized. Funds for the original building erected in l9U6 were contributed by the late Mr. Edward I. Berwind, then president ot The Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, tor the purpose ot providing adequate medical and surgical services to the employees ot the company he represented. Following the selection ot Dr. W. S. Wheeling Ianuary l, l9l6 as Medical Director and Administrator, the growth ot the hospital has been phenomenal. To meet the demand tor increased service, Mr. Berwind and his successor, Mr. Charles E. Dunlap, have made possible the continued progress ot the hospital. Many alterations and additions have been made and the latest scientific equipment added to the X-ray and Pathological laboratories and the Physiotheraphy department, while Doctor Wheeling has surrounded himselt with a corps ot able assistants. Dr. George F. Wheeling is Assistant Medical Director and Chiet Surgeon ot the hospital. Dr. Iohn A. Orris spe- cializes in orthopedic and plastic surgery. Doctors Wheeling and Orris are Fellows ot the American College ot Surgeons. Dr. H. A. Slesinger is a registered pathologist and pediatrician and specializes in allergy. Dr. Sles- inger is a Fellow ot American College ot Pathologists and Fellow of Ameri- can Academy ot Pediatrics. Other medical aides ot long-standing at the hos- pital are Doctors A. M. Benshott, E. P. Dickinson, Aron Rosenbaum and Harold Griffith. Recent additions to the medical statt were Doctors William B. Shope and E. Z. Eperiessy. Under the supervision ot Mr. Charles G. Berwind, erection ot a Nurses' Home on the hospital grounds was begun in 1921. The funds tor the building were contributed by Mr. Edward I. Berwind as a memorial to his wite who died in 1922. This building provides modern dormitory accommodations lor students as well as class rooms, library, recreational tacilities, etc.
