S. Wheeling. With a deep feeling ot gratitude, we realize the many different tasks that Dr. Wheeling has had in making our training school a success. His guiding hand kept our actions constantly to our purpose and within the bounds of common sense. Our doctor's job has been to minister to the sick and dying, giving unselfishly of his time and Wise counsel. His, indeed, has been a noble sacri- tice, as he could hope for no reward other than the satisfaction of having done a job Well. EDWARD IAY NEWBAKER With deep regret we record the decease ot Mr. Newbaker, President of the Windber Hospital, on Iune 10, 1949. Mr. Newbaker was elected a member ot the Board of Mana- gers in 1921, and served as President of the Board from 1928 un- til the time of his death. His counsel and executive ability in all matters pertaining to the hospital and the school of nursing were invaluable. Each morning sees some task begun, Each evening sees it close: Something attempted, something done Has earned cr night's repose. -Longfellow TRUSTEES CHARLES E. DUNLAP CHARLES G. BERWIND HENRY A. Spacious grounds, not too close to busy highways, yet convenient- ly reached from main thoroughtares, provide an ideal environment tor the hospitalized. Funds for the original building erected in l9U6 were contributed by the late Mr. Edward I. Berwind, then president ot The Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, tor the purpose ot providing adequate medical and surgical services to the employees ot the company he represented. Following the selection ot Dr. W. S. Wheeling Ianuary l, l9l6 as Medical Director and Administrator, the growth ot the hospital has been phenomenal. To meet the demand tor increased service, Mr. Berwind and his successor, Mr. Charles E. Dunlap, have made possible the continued progress ot the hospital. Many alterations and additions have been made and the latest scientific equipment added to the X-ray and Pathological laboratories and the Physiotheraphy department, while Doctor Wheeling has surrounded himselt with a corps ot able assistants. Dr. George F. Wheeling is Assistant Medical Director and Chiet Surgeon ot the hospital. Dr. Iohn A. Orris spe- cializes in orthopedic and plastic surgery. Doctors Wheeling and Orris are Fellows ot the American College ot Surgeons. Dr. H. A. Slesinger is a registered pathologist and pediatrician and specializes in allergy. Dr. Sles- inger is a Fellow ot American College ot Pathologists and Fellow of Ameri- can Academy ot Pediatrics. Other medical aides ot long-standing at the hos- pital are Doctors A. M. Benshott, E. P. Dickinson, Aron Rosenbaum and Harold Griffith. Recent additions to the medical statt were Doctors William B. Shope and E. Z. Eperiessy. Under the supervision ot Mr. Charles G. Berwind, erection ot a Nurses' Home on the hospital grounds was begun in 1921. The funds tor the building were contributed by Mr. Edward I. Berwind as a memorial to his wite who died in 1922. This building provides modern dormitory accommodations lor students as well as class rooms, library, recreational tacilities, etc. HOSPITAL Build Strong to shelter The rich and the poor, Your Corridors, Your White Walls, are Framwork ot healing cmd of rest, Not merely antichambers Ol pale death. Men made you in the image ot A temple ot unseltish love. -Margaret P. TRO UBLE A trouble is a little thing Or it is something great, Depending on the way in which We calculate its weight. It bothers us at work or play, lt irritates the mind- And We are mighty glad it We Can leave it tar behind. Sometimes it is a serious thing We cannot overlook. For tear that it may bring about The ending ot our book. But more than often it is just The color ot a sky, That We have painted and We are lnclined to magnify. Each trouble whether great or small Must have its part in lite, For otherwise we do not have Our struggle and our strife. -I am Schwinn, R. N es I. M etcalte WILLIAM STUART WHEELING A. B., M. D., F. There were thirty-three girls wending their way toward Windber Hospital to take the Entrance Examination of the Windber School of Nursing. We all met in the living room of the Nurses' Home before going downstairs to the classroom for the Big Test. Four o'clock that Monday afternoon we were all exhausted, mentally and physical- ly. Homeward bound and somewhat re- lieved, We began wondering whether we had succeeded in the first step of our nurs- ing career. September 8, l946 twenty-two new stu- dents entered the portals of the Nurses' Home. We got our room assignments and tried to orient ourselves. We went to bed that night weary and strained-not know- ing what to expect on the morrow. It was lights out when such questions as How old are you? Do you have any brothers or sisters? Where do you live? Do you feel strange? were answered. October l0, we donned our new uni- forms for the first time and went to gradua- tion exercises in a body. What a time those black ties gave us. October 29 we again put on our uni- forms and went over to the hospital wards for the first time-the real taste of hospital activity. My, the excitement and jibbering that day. After two hours on the floor, we felt as if we had worked one week straight. So tired! ! ! Then we had Christmas vacation. Four days to relate experiences and familiarize our parents with the first four months of our training. And they listened so well! ! I Shortly before Capping Exercises we had our election of officers. Positions taken were: President, Imogene Nicholson, Vice President, Marian Heckartf Secretary, Ioan Adamsg Treasurer, Esther Kissell. Our class motto and flower were decided upon at a later date. March 6, 1947 we pledged ourselves into the Nursing Profession. We had nineteen girls left to carry on for the class of '49. How well we remember saying the Florence Nightengale Pledge, carrying the Nighten- gale Lamp, and receiving those Caps. Summer vacation in May, Iune, or Iuly and we felt like veterans. ln late summer of '47 Windber School of Nursing took in a new class. What a wonderful feeling we had when we were no longer the young students. We were almost as excited as they Were. lt was after those summer months that our class took a sudden decrease. We only had thirteen students from the Class of '49 in our midst the following spring. Many of us were already advancing through our special curricula such as diet kitchen, pediatrics, and surgery. And how we loved it! ! ! Work, we did, but learn, we must. So forward! The Hallowe'en Party we had for the new class was quite a success. We had black cats, witches, slimy gloves, spider webs and corn stalks everywhere. It was also at this party that we received little sisters to guide and help in any way pos- sible. We initiated the girls that night too. Did those poor rooms take a beating-and they were downstairs enjoying themselves! The summer of '48 we had a Banquet for the Graduating Seniors. This gala affair was held at the Palace Hotel. We ate like mad and paid for it afterward. September 8, 1948 we were full fledged seniors. Some four of our class were already on psychiatric affiliation in Philadelphia. This 'course of three months broadened our thoughts about mentally ill patients and is an experience never to be forgotten. Ianuary, l949 found our class with twelve student nurses. We have lost almost half of the original class in two and one-half years. We have come a long way together and we realize that graduation from this training school is not the completion but only the beginning of our Nursing Career. I SHALL NOT PASS AGAIN THIS WAY. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE CLASS OF '49 We, the Graduating Class of 1949 from the Windber Hospital School of Training, upon the completion of our course as student nurses, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby constitute, publish, and present this, our last will and testament as follows: TO THE FUTURE SENIORS: l. We had a wait of one hour before the Red Arrow would be speeding us along toward Philadelphia. ln front of Penn Traffic we were greeted by an old classmate of Windber School of Nursing, Mrs. Dr. Edward I. Sigmund. Marian, as We knew her, is now wife and office nurse of Dr. Sigmund-better known to us as Edward. After comparing notes for a short forty-tive minutes, we learned that Io Adams is now the Wife of Col. Ronald Kaufman, stationed in Georgia. Doris Brown is in China as a missionary's wife and working along side of her husband. Lois Brown Shiley is taking care of her small family of three girls. She's the picturesque Model Mother. Veronica Kovacic is working in Rochester, Minn., at the Mayo Clinic. loan Ringler, another one of the married girls, Mrs. Robert Thomas, is residing in Sunny California. Time having elapsed so quickly, Swarn and I bid Marian farewell, picked up our bags and baggage and headed into a future of suture nursing in Philadelphia General Hospital, Swarn, as Dr. Nusebaum's assistant, and holding up antennae for Philco on off-duty hours for me. After a day of orientation, we began our preliminary training which consisted of studies of the fundamentals of nursing. In October, we spent several hours each day, putting this knowledge into practical use in the different departments of the hospital. Also during this mon.th, at a Halloween Party, held in our honor by the upperclassmen, we learned to know the older students and instructors with whom we would be associating during the coming three years. February 18, just six months after entering training, We tool: the first big step toward our goal. At a beautiful, impressive ceremony, We realized, as never before, the responsibilities that lay before us. Our caps were placed upon our heads by former Windber graduates. Shortly after capping, a class meeting was held. Class officers were elected: Nima Kaufman, President, Violet Malone, Vice Presidentg Marion Anlceny, Secretaryg Yoletta Propoggio, Treasurer. Class Flower-Red Rose Class colors-Red and White Class motto-x'Climb, Though .the Hills Be Rugged Several 'of our members reailzed the responsibilities even, more when in the Spring they were assigned to night duty. Summer came and was gone-August 18, to celebrate our first year of training, a swimming partyiand Weiner roast was held. Now being Intermediates and following the customs of those before us, we held a spaghetti supper and hayride for the graduating class. We also held a Halloween Party for the preliminary students. At the present time, we are looking forward to the beginning of our psychiatric affiliation at the Philadelphia State Psychiatric Hospital. Over the cups of refreshments served by the upperclassmen, the new arrivals were given an opportunity to be-come acquainted with their new classmates and as they chattered excitedly back and forth discussing this new phase of life they were informed by Miss Yetter, the directress, the rooms where they should reside. Eight of the new girls were to live at the nurses' home annex known as the Hindman House with Mrs. Hindman as their house mother. The other nine girls were assigned to rooms at the large nurses' home with Mrs. Gimber as mother of the house. Following the physical examinations which were given on Monday and Tuesday of the next week, the new students began their classes. Slowly new courses of study unfolded before them as they took their first steps in cr long anticipated career. When each girl became adjusted to her new surroundings, her studies became less difficult and to her amazement she was soon informed that finals would be given in several of her sub- jects. At the completion of each course, a new book was presented to her and every girl set forth to conquer successfully another stepping stone to her chosen profession. At last the long awaited day arrived. The early morning rays of sun on September 28, caught nine of the class of girls making their way into the hospital for their first experience of care on the floor. The 30th of the same month found the remaining of the new class of nurses experiencing their first day in the hospital. AVIAS GREYBECK MISS MARGARET BALOG MHS. MARY MCCUNE MRS. MARY GUSTAFSON The Alumnae Association of the Windber Hospital School of Nursing was organized in March, 1928. ln the beginning the purpose 'of the organiza- tion was to provide for mutual help and improvement in professional Work and for the promotion of good fellowship among the graduates of the school. Later the purpose was broadened to include the advancement of the interests of the School ot Nursing and participation in the programs of the professional organizations. All graduates of the School ot Nursing are eligible for membership. The total membership for l948 was one hundred eight-one. Approximately one hundred fifty ot these members reside outside of 'the vicinity of Windber. These individuals were scattered over thirteen states, Washington, D. C., and the Canal Zone. In an effort to stimulate interest in the Association and the .School of Nursing an annual news letter is published and' sent to members who have paid the annual dues of 52.00 per year. The regular meetings are held the second Monday ot each month with the exception of Iuly and August. During the past few years the Iune and December meetings have been held at the Pepoy residence. A delightful party follows the business session. We 1 E President ............. ....... M RS. MARY MCCUNE Vice President ........... ...... , . MRS. CORA MYERS Secretary-Treasurer ..... .........
