STYLUS '76 Windber Area High School Windber, Pennsylvania 15963 ' Volume 74 The Spirit of ,76', We all have heard so much about it in books and newspapers, and on television and radio. Just what is this spirit and what did it do? This spirit produced a crucible - the great Melting Pot - that fused world immigrants into the greatest Republic of Man. Whether these immigrants came for political or religious reasons, they endorsed, preserved, and strengthened the idea of hard work which provided the economic security missing in their home country. This resulted in the mosaic which is America. Thus, our greatest strength as a nation lies in the fact that we have a diversity of opinion and a diversity of people. We can absorb and use ideas of all kinds provided we keep ourselves in a situation where every idea can have public expression. The 1976 Stylus Staff would like to show a mere speck of this American Dream through the camera's eye, stafferis pen, and artist's hand. The Spirit of '76 has been both an inspiration and a blessing to us. Faculty, and Services X 67 To the class of 1976: Congratulations to the members of the 1976 gradu- ating class. You are entering the adult world at an exciting, sometimes perplexing and challenging time in our existance. We are proud to have you represent the Winber Area School District. As you move ahead into additional training, new vocations, and further education, I have a concern which I would like to share with you. Our whole world is crying out for models of how to live. Our society is often confused by differing values and attitudes toward how to live. We ask you to move into the future with confidence and with a dynamic equilibrium. We ask you to be sensitive to people and their needs. We ask you to invest something of your- selves in relationships. We ask you to develop a life style worthy of yourself, your parents, and your com- munity. The delightful aspect of all this is that we believe you can and will. On behalf of the Board of Education, faculty, and administration, I wish you sincere happiness and suc- cess in your future years. 68 ! Administration Dr. Charles A. Landis - Superintendent of Schools In the time that we attended Windber Area High,we came in contact with many new faces. Some grew into friends, others remained strangers. Without question, one person with whom all became familiar is Frank P. Alcamo. Mr. Alcamo has given our community over a decade of dedicated service as the principal of our school. Mr. Alcamo, a native of South Fork, is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He received his master's degree from the Pennsylvania State Univer- sity. Mr. Alcamo took his first position at Windber in July, 1962, as assistant principal. In August of the fol- lowing year he was promoted to principal. The Bicentennial is a time when we should honor not only those who founded and defended our country in the past, but also those who continue to do so today by being active, responsible citizens. By his serv- ice, Mr. Alcamo has proved himself worthy of dis- tinctlon. Frank P. Alcamo - High School Principal a capable administrator. Paul J. Robinson - Assistant Principal In the office of assistant principal we find a former Windber teacher, Mr. Paul Robinson. This was Mr. Robinson,s first year at Windber in this capacity. In that time he has proven himself Administration f 69 ..M,,.. B. 'HL . . i.C....r...M....i....x,, 11 SCI-10014 BQARD Y Row l: Edward Kaiser, Vice President: Vincent Keilman, Presidentg Raymond E. Members in both the senior and junior high organizations take time to perfect and recite a speech that they, themselves, have prepared. Both levels compete as a team in matches with sev- eral school throughout the year. There are four speaking categories from which to choose and these consist of informative speaking, poetry reading, persuasive speaking, and prose reading. In a Forensics match, the speaker must do more than just L'speak . He or she must communicate their ideas and opin- ions to their audience - the judges. The quality of the spoken material is impor- tant to' win, but the manner of delivery enhances or destroys the presentation. Win or lose, however. Its singers put on concerts in the spring and at the holiday season of Christmas, and practiced daily to achieve a high quality of sound reproduction. Stemming from the 84-member chorus are the folk group, the ensemble, and a few individual soloists. In addition to providing public pleasure at home, Windbefs chorus set three representatives to district chorus and several mem- bers to county chorus. Endless hours are spent go- ing over words to new cheers, rehearsing routines, tumbling, and limbering muscles to do those high kicks, straddles. and splits. Going to all athletic games to lead the fans in support of our teams is only one of their many responsibilities. They also compete in contests of cheering ability. This year, the Varsity squad cap- tured third place at the Jaffa Mosque in October, second place in the Annual Cambria County War Barb Cunsolo Memorial Contest, and a first place trophy in the WAABA Girl's Basketball Tournament, both held in November. The cheerleaders of all squads, Var- sity, Junior Varsity, and Junior High, deserve many rounds of applause. Also well deserving of recogni- tion are these girls' advisors: Miss Debbie Strapple for the Varsity and Junior Varsity and Mrs. Mary Critchiield for the Junior High. Its purposes are to provide activities which the entire student body may attend or participate in and to act as a direct line from the students to the administration and vice-versa. It has sponsored dances after home football games, incorporated a tutoring program into school life, con- ducted a student exchange pro- gram with surrounding schools, and acted as a channel for stu- dent opinions and comments. Representatives who were in- volved in a student exchange gave comprehensive studies of other schools, ideas in student council projects, daily schedules, regulations, and almost every corner of the school system. New concepts were discussed and ap- plied to Windber High as a means of betterment and change. A new idea this year was to open meetings to senior high students with study halls during the given periods. This enabled students to observe procedures and to participate directly in student councills government af- fairs. V7 ' 'i- . This year was no exception. The theme, aWe Shall Never Pass This Way Againv, set the tone for a beautiful evening. The Prom was held at the Windber American Legion on May 9th, music was provided by Illinois Bronze. The Post-Prom was held at the high school and sponsored by the Windber clergy. There was entertainment in the form of basketball, volleyball, a movie, and dancing. No one could ever forget the bump Chains, robot dancing, or the delicious food prepared by parents. Refresh- ments were served in the cafe- teria and a cordial atmosphere was experienced by both stu- dents and chaperones. As football season approached Windber this year, a feeling of uncertainty could be felt by the players and fans alike. With only five lettermen returning along with just nine seniors, the road ahead looked bleak. But with optimism and confidence, a Windber tradition, the Ramblers readied themselves for their campaign against ten tough opponents. After lengthy and exhausting conditioning and training at Camp Hamilton, including two decisive shutouts in scrimmages, the local footballers were prepared for their first encounter of the season, September 6, against Johnstown Vo-Tech. The team showed a strong defense and a mobile offense and the consistency in both was evident. But in the games that followed, consistency was at times the major Haw. While playing like champions one week, the next game was a multitude of mental errors, mistakes, and mixups. As evidence of this were convincing victories over Vo-Tech, Conemaugh Township, and a highly touted team from Forest Hills. But as spectacular as these victories were, just as disappointing were the thumpings received from Bedford, Westmont, and Bishop McCort. The inexperierice and youth showed up here especially in the defense, where there were only two regulars returning from last year. However, this just made each player try that much harder and their efforts finally paid off in the last two games of the year against Forest Hills and North Star. The faith and acknowledgement which the team lacked finally showed itself in these final contests. Though it was not the type of championship season which Windber has been used to in the past, it was successful, especially in many special ways to the seniors. The 5-5 record was not the best but it provided many moments of excitement and thrills and with the experience gained by previously untried underclassmen has laid a path for victory in the next few years for W.A.H.S. Instead of rambling on about what should be and what could have been, this poem expresses the season better and leaves no doubt that the Ramblers ended up winners . . . The Ballad ofa Team NFL Action by NFL Films For lucky we were during those bad times, that cooler heads prevailed. Remember those easy tackles we missed more than once in a while We came as young untested men, from schools across the land And stepped from the bus with bags and soaring hopes in hand. And under muscle-sapping sun, we fought for places to be won By one man out of five. And sometimes scrimmage tensions raged, sprang like a maniac tiger Caged, unleased itself in hate. Our numbers dwindled ever lower, as uniforms were turned in For our goal was to find the best forty men, the men that could win. Then one day it was me and the other thiry-nine Who charged out to challenge all comers, for we thought we were The top of the line. But making the team is one thing, while becoming a team is another. And the mistakes we conspired, made us burdens to each other. For we found ways to lose football games that have never been tried before Then when we had thought we had run out of ways, Someone always came up with one more. So the clock ran down and our scores were down And our heads hung down in shame. We winced every time we saw teammates in ajarring collision of pain. It made us wonder how football could ever be called a game. Our sweat had run in rivers, our blood had trickled in streams We'd gone out and fought together, yet captured none of our dreams. We tried to put the blame where we couldn't, to blame others for how we failed And when we got fancy on offense, it was Keystone cops back in style. We sat on benches and talked things out - And tried to run our problems to ground. And it came from nowhere, I don't know what day, we turned it all around The defenders were left and we raced out and passes targetted down. We blasted like caverns wide open, and backs were set free And the cheer of the crowd proclaimed the thanks as they watched you and me The joy was there, the joy was there, football was a game, And the more we played the easier it became. Remember how the enemy always eluded our reach, A But now in waves we came charging, like the ocean upon a beach. As teammates we picked each other up from the unrelenting ground. We relied on each other and trusted each man to help score That each man would give his best then a little more. Finally, there was nothing, that could stand in our way We went through the rest of the season making that one great play. In victory we wallowed in laughter and hugged each other to our chests Over and one in the wild joy and rumpus done .. . it was the secret to our success Somewhere, somewhere, along the line, forty individuals became a team Somehow, somehow, we forty had gone out and reached our dreams. But greater even greater than silver trophies or victories in the end Was the fact that I'd met thirty-nine people and call each of them my friend. Row 2: Tony Ferrante, Dave Petrilla, Leonard Lombardi, Mark Antalosky, Todd Bostock, John Bossi, Skip Bostock, Bill Elko, Perry Costantino, Keith Danel, George Petro, Dave Nagy, Ken Martin What do you get when you oombine a fast-breaking offense with a full-court-pressing, man-to-man defense? The answer is a Rambler basketball team that will bring a crowd to its feet game after game. This is a description of this year's basketball team that will be remembered for a long time to come. With their fast-breaking offenses in high gear, the Ram- blers kept their games at racing pace. The fast break was centered around the board play of Skip Bostock, Dave Nagy, Mark Antalosky, and John Bossi and the running of fast-breaking guards, Dave Petrilla and George Petro. These players worked as a finely tuned machine, each com- plimenting the other in the way he played. When the break wasn't there, the Ramblers could be seen swishing jump shots from all over the floor. The balanced scoring of this year's squad also helped because anybody was capable of scoring from any spot on the court. On the other end of the floor, the Ramblers constantly bothered the opposition with their pressing, full-court de- fense. These tactics caused the Ramblers' opponents to commit numerous turnovers and allowed the Ramblers to pick off passes and come up with some key steals. Along with their offensive and defensive tactics, the Ram- blers were aided by the fact that there were five returning lettermen. Because of this, the team was experienced and 136 ! Sports knew what it was like to play together, what the others were going to do, and where they were going to be. The Ramblers had worked hard and long all season and it payed off for them in the end. They were able to take first place in the Windber Rotary Tournament held over Christ- mas vacation. Later in the season, they added another title to their collection, Tri-County League Champions. More important, it gave the Ramblers a berth in the district play- offs and a chance of winning District 6 honors along with advancing even further toward more honors. Once, again, fan support also played a big part in the success of the Ramblers' season. Game after game, no matter where it was who the Ramblers were playing, one could see a host of Windber fans yelling and rooting their team on. Such chants as dee-fensel' could be heard echoing through the packed gym of Windber along with the roar that came with every Rambler basket. This yearis team was one of the iinest that Windber has had in a long time. They brought with them a crowd- pleasing style of basketball that will remain in the memories of many fans. Their constant hustle, teamplay, and sports- manship signified the type of students that Windber has and they have built a good reputation for themselves and the people of Windber. 5 Cl! Hoffer and Spinazzola were also school record holders. Other senior lettermen were Nick An- gelo, Joe Mulcahy, Joe Demko, Steve Camp- itell, Steve Bencie, Dan Koshute, Lynn Weav- er, Vince Ferrante, and Keith Brumbaugh. With more meets being added each year and has been constantly growing. Each year more innovations, such as the ilip in the long jump and the use of artificial weather running track, has added to the excitement for the spectator and for the participant. With hard work and determination, which has become the trade- mark of W.A.H.S., Coach William Smutko's Ramblers were again one of the dominant track forces in the area. The team was centered around returning lettermen George Petro, Mark Anta- losky, John Bossi, and Dave Nagy. Junior letterman, Dan Blackburn, strengthened the team along with the other underclassmen. Coach George Petro's Ramb1er's had to play aggressive baseball at bat, in the field, and on the bases to help make up for the lack of Coach George Petro power and experience in their line-up. With a little bit of luck and a lot of hustle and desire, the Ramblers made another attempt at adding the sectional crown to their collection. Team play and fundamental baseball were the big- gest factors and the desire to win was also present. With the help of a couple lucky bounces and good breaks, the team had a very successful season. I The 1976 Stylus Staff gratefully acknowledges the cooperation and assistance of: The Administration, Faculty, Services, and Students, Windber Board of Education, Mr. Alcamo, Dr. Landis, Cover Studio, Miss Kochinski, Mr. Lambert, Mr. Ripple, Mr. Urian, Mrs. Whitaker, Mr. Yocca. The tife and drum, Spirit of '76, heard around the world, is an ideal we will long remember and a struggle we will never forget. In 1776, this great nation was formed in order to provide liberty and justice for all men. The events and memories that shaped this era have been preserved for us in many diaries, accounts, and journals of our forefathers. As we look back to that date two hundred years 184 l Index ago, it is quite easy to discover the spirit ofthe people in 1776. We, the staff, are confident that this yearbook will also bring back the memories of the year, 1976. It is with pride that we have recorded our accomplishments. In the years to come, we hope it will be the Spirit of 1976 that also will be remembered.
