Many people never realize this. They see in teaching only a means of earning a living. VVe see in teaching a means of helping to shape the future. Here are the faces of those who teach, of those administrators who guide, and of the men in the background, the school directors, Whose policy forms the life of our school. Here are those whose thumbprints, un- known to you, have helped shape you in your image. CLYDE E. BOUNDS Superintendent of Schools ALEX G. ATTY Aflministmtorx WMQ4, ERNEST B. CASSLER High School Principal Assihtani Principal in charge of Curriculum and Instruction Chemistry Physiology Human Relations Athletic Trainer 4 Scloool Boom' Officers of the YYindl1er Area School Board are Harold Keller, treasurerg Edward Hughes, vice- presidel lg Lloyd Shank, president: and Carl Lawhead, secretary. The task of a school board is not easy. The directors are the guardians of com- munity property and advisors on the welfare of all the students attending school. The board is responsible for making the policy which runs the schools under their care. They formulate the rules and regulations which guide the teachers and ad- ministrators. But their most important job is financial. These men must spend wisely the funds in their care to obtain the greatest benefit for all. We are fortunate that our board has provided for us so well with the new school addition. The VVindber Area School Board is composed of Harold Keller, Edward Hughes, Lloyd Shank, Carl Lawhead, Thomas Senella, seatcdg and standing, Stephen Conjelko, George Lamb, Michael Serrian, Irwin Weavmfr, Joseph Hobba, Andrew lNIalloy, Vaughn Horner, and Clyde Pl. Not Children, but not yet consid- ered adults, we Work to cram our heads full of facts and We dream of the day when we will be independent. Somehow, our minds can be filled with data and dreams at the same time. W'e rush to finish an assignment before a date, and We spend some of our television time Worrying about tomorrowis lessons. P1fe.rentz'n cg e lmfef To be one of a class gives a student an identity, a place in life. People know who we are and what we can do when we tell them our class in school. As members of a class, we are growing year by year in knowledge and maturity. We step into the broader world of high school as sev- enth graders, a little bewildered and con- fused at the size and scope of our new school world. Class year by class year we broaden our minds and social horizons until, as young men and women, we reach graduation. Here are the faces of those students who make up Windber Area High School. In six years, the seventh graders here will not resemble their present pictures Very much . . . and perhaps many of the jun- iors won't either. Search for your own face and those of your friends in these pages. They are here. 5j!i?5E?'r: ' The Junior class officers, F. Kurowski, secretaryg J. Molnar, treasurerg P. Henger, presidentg and P. Specific goals are beginning to formulate. Their role in academic and social affairs is a large and important one, giving them the qualities of leadership they will need as seniors and future cit- izens. Training received in leadership and cooperative following is put to good use. The junior magazine campaign tests the ability of the class to work together. Selection of college, com- mercial, or general courses will mold the collection of studies an individual student receives. Latin, Algebra, Home Ee., and Shop help students choose the various courses of study they may wish to follow in the next three years. New clubs and activities are very important to the social life of the freshmen. The freshman party is the highlight of their social year. Hard Work and care- ful planning by the offiicers, advisors, and committees usually make this an outstanding event for all the classes. Mr. Yocea and the officers of the freshmen class, G. Yarnal, treasurer, J. Sekela, presidentg and T. Marfizo, vice-president discuss plans for some future class projects. --u-1 -Ti.. Mrs. Probert and the other members of her class listen as L. Korhut gives an oral book report. These freshmen students listen intently as Miss George teaches a lesson in general science. These freshmen look on as Mr. Mickle brings out a point from his reference hooks. Miss Weaver seems to be enjoying herself as she .drills Latin into these students. , Miss Murphy watches as these students illustrate Latin sentence structure. i This class of freshman are enjoying themselves as they attempt to solve algebraic equations. ,M 'Sf Hou' 1: R. This year is a continuation and a broadening of experiences sampled in seventh grade. Studies are advanced to prepare the stu- dent for his role as a freshman. They are caught in a whirl of social events, which have broadened since their first year in high school. Planning a party teaches them to work with officers, advisors, and committees. This experience is valuable and important to the formation of a well- organized and active class in future years. Mrs. Luther cannot decide which pupil to call on to read a passage for English class. Gavalak reaches for T. Heckler's aerial. Scoring surges in the closing minutes proved not enough to overcome their opponents' first half advan- tage, and the Ramblers dropped the season's second contest, Q7-12, to Altoona. The Mountain Lions built up a strong Q7-0 halftime lead as halfback Bob Gutshall recorded three touchdowns on runs of 75, 47, and 16 yards. With three minutes remaining, of first down on the losers, 29 quarterback Terry Heckler hurled a bulls- eye to end John Boruch on the Windber 42. Joe Gav- alak, trailing the play, grabbed a lateral from Boruch and covered the remaining distance to score. Not yet finished, the gridders of Coach John Kawchak struck again with a minute to go. After Sherwin picked up Q4 yards to the losers' 36, Heckler tossed a screen pass to Sherwin who rambled into paydirt. Spoiling Indiana High School's hopes for an unde- feated season, the visiting Kawchakmen picked up their second win of the young season by blanking the Braves, 21-0. After Ed Hadix recovered an Indiana miscue, Blue and White signal caller Terry Heckler jaunted Q7 yards around end for a touchdown. Late in the first quarter Windber scored again with Dave Dunmire diving over for the one. Recovering a fumble on the home teamis 15 late in the fourth period, Wind- ber pushed over another TD as fullback Tom Sherwin plunged the final three yards and added his third con- version. Johnstown defenders close in on T. Sherwin. With the strong arm of quarterback Terry Heckler and the hard running of fullback Tom Sherwin, the Ramblers once again downed their opponents in the season's opener. This time the Blue and White easily defeated the defending Pittsburgh City League champs, Westinghouse, 31-6. Windber tallied in the first quarter on a jump pass from Heckler to end John Boruch. In the big second period, Sherwin scored from 31 yards outg a Heckler-to-Boruch pass added six more pointsg and Sherwin plunged over from the two. Dave Dun- mire, junior halfback, accounted for the last Rambler touchdown in the third stanza. Johnstown evens the score at 7-7. T he game saw the home forces of Windber lose a thriller to their powerful Johnstown opponents, 20-14. The Ramblers captured the lead twice, but found the huge Trojan team too much to stay. The Blue and White gridders drew first blood when end John Boruch broke through to block a Johnstown punt and recover the leather on the visitor three. Dave Dunmire tallied and Tom Sherwinis placement was good. Johnstown evened the score easily in the second stanza and went ahead in the third quarter, 13-7, on a 67-yard pass play. Guard Bob Oyler picked up a Trojan bobble and ambled into the endzone. Sherwinis placement sent Windber ahead, 14-13. Sparked by a 34-yard pass, the visiting squad came roaring back to score the needed winning touchdown and capture their 15th straight win. Johnstown has won 19 games while Windber has copped 15 in this, the oldest series in the district. Seven of the encounters ended in deadlocks. Sparked by three touchdown passes by quarterback Terry Heckler, Windber rambled to a 32-7 win over the Valley Trojans of Chambersburg High School. The Blue and VVhite scored in every quarter, with two of Hecklerls scoring aerials completed to end John Boruch. Halfback Joe Gavalak accounted for two more Rambler tallies, on a pass from Heckler and a running play from scrimmage. Fullback Tom Sherwin added to the scor- ing column with a 34-yard scoring jaunt. Sherwin also converted two points after touchdowns. D. Dunmire spots daylight in the Johnstown line. The Ramblers rang down the curtain on their short eight game season of 1959 with a 20-7 victory over the McKeesport Tigers. The winners scored on the third play from scrimmage with Tom Sherwin rambling 62 yards to tally. Terry Heckleris eleventh touchdown pass of the season, in the second quarter, hit Joe Gav- alak in the end-zone to boost Windber's advantage. Sherwin plunged into paydirt to record the Coaltown- ers, last TD of the year. J. Creek opens the way for T. Heckler. Bearing the brunt of the attack, hard-hitting full- back Tom Sherwin led the Ramblers to their fourth win in six games by bowling over Conemaugh Town- ship, 39-7. Averaging almost eight yards, Sherwin crossed the goal line four times with runs of 14, 51, five, and eight yards. The Rambler back also added three extra points. Quarterback Terry Heckler com- pleted a 19-yard pass to John Boruch who snatched the ball in the end zone between two defenders for Heckler's eighth TD pass of the season. Halfback Joe Gavalak accounted for the remaining Winrlber tally. With mud and rain setting thc scene, Windber and the ever imposing Pittsburgh North Catholic wal- loweda' to a 12-12 deadlock for the second year in a row. Last season,s game ended in a 7-7 tie. North Cath- olic scored first on a march of 80 yards. The Kawchak- men evened the board with a 77 yard pass play from Heckler to Boruch for the Rambler quarterback's ninth scoring aerial of the season, his sixth to Boruch. With Tom Sherwin doing most of the ball carrying, the Ramblers moved to the visitors' 20 where Heckler hit Boruch for his tenth touchdown heave. North over- came the deficit in the closing moments of the half. T. Sherwin runs hard for yardage against Chambersburg. 5 .
