She's used most of the insurance that her husband left for her, and there iust aren't many opportun- ities for an unskilled widow. The only way she can afford to keep daughter Susan in school is to take advantage herself of an unusual, but most generous scholarship. Abby's first two names are Abigail Fortitude, and anyone with those names is eligible for a liberal memorial scholarship established years ago by a wealthy woman of the same name. What a situation- a mother who is only a freshman with a daugh- ter who is already a sophomore! I, Sepely. P. llorvarh CAST Mrs. Abigail Abbott . .... The entire school pro- gram today is complex, personnel work attempts to simplify it for the individual pupil. Guidance or personnel work repre- sents an organized effort on the part of the school to help the individual pupil become adiusted to his present situation in such a way as to provide the greatest development for him and to aid him in planning for his future. A school man attempting to help a parent understand the place of guidance in the complete program of education suggested that its function was to help Johnny see through himself and then to assist him in seeing himself through. Mr. Feeley types one of his many reports in the council room. - :. .-, - .. . ' 3---1, , -D: ' R , f -z ,a:i51, ' I 1 1' . . ' ,'1:v5g,,' n . swf? ,:.g7r4:. Therefore, the Home and School Visitor's main contribu- tion is in the realm of human relation- ships, in order, in her way, to contribute to the emotions, what the nurse contrib- utes to the body, the teacher to the intel- lect, the dentist to the teeth, and the prin- cipal to self-government. Her work is a way of helping those children who need and want her help to become more aware of their difficulties so that they may be- come relatively more self-directing, and more productive, more giving and there- fore, more happily adiusted students. The Home and School Visitor works to unite the efforts of the home, the school and the community in the prevention as well as the solution of problems which inter- fere with children's successful participa- tion in School experience- Mrs. Shaffer is about to do some visiting in her station wagon. , u . 1 no o - 0 ' 9 . These five people represented our alma mater at various events during the school year. Beth was our Voice of Democracy win- ner both in W.H.S. and at the county contest where she walked away with the top honors. Her speech was sent into the state contest. Johnny appeared on the Wilken's Amateur Hour. He and his squeeze-box are going places. Johnny has a small or- chestra called the Silver Tones. He plays for school dances and local af- fairs. We feel sure we'll be hearing more about him in a few years. Donna and Mary Louise won first prize in the field of Historic Costumes in the first Historama conducted at the Buhl Planetarium in Pittsburgh in November. Their award consisted of a set of records entitled The Testament of Freedom. Dannie represented us at the Somerset County Fall Festival. This event replaced Pennsylvania Week in Somerset County. She presided over the Soroptimist Fair. Johnny appeared on the Junior Disc Jockey Show of WCRO. Jim, ww iluz Hip Hip Hooray! That's the familiar cry of the Windber High cheerleaders. These girls played an important part in the sports activities of the school. The squad this year consisted of seven seniors: Phyllis Horvath, Beth Paul, Tillie Findish, Virginia Campitell, Helen Makuch, Myrna Keirn and Judie Stoy. Carol Pristow a iunior, and two substitutes, Jeanie Pevahouse and Donna Berkey com- pleted the squad. The girls, themselves, elected Phyllis Horvath as captain. Phyllis did a splendid iob in seeing that everyone in the group worked together. Beth Paul was chosen co-captain. Both girls earned them- selves a well deserved cheer. The cheerlead- ers attended football games that were at home or away. The fans could always count on the cheerleaders to keep their spirits aroused whether the team was winning or losing. They also attended the basketball games to keep that same spirit in the air. Miss Janet Roland did a fine job as ad- viser. WINDBER-33 SHADE-7 Although they were the predicted underdogs, Windber started the '55 season out right by giving Shade a good lacing, 33-7. Fine running by Rich DePolo and Pete Seese sparked the attack. WINDBER-7 ALTOONA-25 On the following week, the Ramblers had a rough time at Mansion Park against Altoona where they lost by the score of 25-7. Altoona capitalized on four big breaks and handed Wind- ber their first setback. WINDBER-O HAR-BRACK-8 The Ramblers tasted defeat for the second time to the tune of 8-0. The boys from Windber put up a very good fight, but some bad breaks plus a downpour and a sea of mud ended Wind- ber's hopes of getting into the winning column again. WINDBER-7 JOHNSTOWN-'I3 Although Windber led almost the entire game, the Men of Troy came back in the last few minutes of the game to defeat their traditional rival, l3-7. This annual classic was followed by a melee which almost put an end to the long series of games between the two schools. WINDBER-'I9 BRADFORD-0 The Ramblers got back in stride after three straight losses by easily whipping a newcomer to the schedule, Bradford, l9-O after cz one day postponement because of rain. Again the top scorers for the Ramblers were Pete Seese and Rich DePolo. Seventy FOU1' WINDBER-6 CONEMAUGH TOWNSHIP-7 The Ramblers met defeat for the fourth time in the '55 season as the Indians from Cone- maugh Township came out on top of a very close battle by the slim margin of 7-6. ln this game, Park Baker, the Indian's star fullback, was held to the least amount of yards he had gained this season. WINDBER-53 ADAMS TOWNSHIP-18 Roy lPetel Seese, senior fullback, led the assault on the Blue Hornets of Adams by making five touchdowns and passing the sixth. When the dust cleared, the Ramblers had come out on top by a score of 53-18. WINDBER-33 PUNXSUTAWNEY-7 The Kawchakmen came back nicely by completely outclassing their opponent to even up their wins and losses for the season at 4 and 4. WINDBER-61 .IOHNSTOWN CATHOLIC-6 Windber High School took advantage of three fumbles, two blocked kicks and an intercept- ed pass in rolling over Johnstown Catholic, 6l-6 at the Windber Stadium. It was the highest score chalked up by the Ramblers since defeating Conemaugh 65-7 in l95O. WINDBER-49 PITTSBURGH NORTH CATHOLIC-6 Using some real razzle dazzle football, Windber finished the season with a bang as they outplayed their heaviest opponent of the year, Pittsburgh North Catholic. Fourteen Ramblers played their final game and turned in one of their best performances of the season. There goes Pete Seese again!
