We visualize ourselves driving that great big powerful automobile at 70 miles an hour along the sun-streaked highway to our private mountain estate where we have all the living luxuries envied even by a king. We see ourselves in the top managerial spot of an important company giving orders making vital decisions and being sought after by important per- sonages from every field. We picture ourselves in the spotlight on the stage in athletics in politics in in- dustry or in any of numerous attractive positions. And then we wake up and it is only a dream and back to work we go. Pleasant for a few moments bu here we are again faced with the cold hard facts of grim reality. Yes when we awaken from day dreaming our spirits are pretty low as we try to reconcile the wonderful things of our dreams with wha exists in actuality. Are your day dreams ever realized? No they never ore- that is not by day dreaming alone. Vision and purposeful planning help in their realization but then it takes work and more work to make those plans come true. Good work builds real results for you. Day dream if you will but plan and work with a purpose if you would be sure to get what you wont. The fel- lows had great plans for a Hep Hop at the be- ginning of the year but were rained out when Hurricane Hazel blew up the Atlantic Coast and Windber, too. This didn't dampen their spirits, though. On the day of their second try, it snowed and snowed, but the brave bodies of Windber High plowed their way through and made the dance a great success for them. The boys very ably took care of props for plays, decorations and other odds and ends. MONITORS We have affectionately named these dear people Hall Mon- sters. They adorn the halls at various places keeping traffic running smoothly. Hope budded anew that this might be the night when you would be the one instead of someone else dancing off with him to the tunes spun by those D. J.'s over in Mr. Cassler's office. Heartbreaking memories for some but glorious for others. Remember that unwelcome guest at the Stage Crew dance- Hurricane Hazel? She really was a wet blanket. Stage Crew turned that one into a party for the fifteen or so that braved the elements to get there. Same routine everytime but still every Fri- day found the students eagerly clutching their fifteen or twenty-five cent donation to some club waiting to be checked in. VV. VVQ-axvr. G1alhuz'c'u H SMH'-r Jimmy Cannon sets ONE OF SCHEHERAZADE'S THOUSAND NIGHTS In the genie filled atmosphere of the auditorium, we thrilled to the Arabian Night magic of our prom. Jimmy Cannon's Orches- tra set the mood as we danced in an Alad- din lamp lit scene of old Bagdad. The hour of eleven saw an addition to our dance, Shade's orchestraless Junior-Senior prom- ers. Our doors open sesamed in welcome and good school spirit. Time and place faded away in this enchanted spot and soon we summoned our magic carpets to soar to Ali Baba's hide-away. But we found that the witching hour was upon us. Our magic car- pets became once more the faithful ialopies of our seemingly distant past, and home- ward we drove in a more prosaic manner. A blindfold withholds the secret that the squirming worms you are forced to eat is iust a string of spaghetti, that the slimy swamp water that you have to drink is only flour and water, that the eyeball you manage to gulp down is only a grape. Aurmym- The rousing introduction to each Windber cheer started the ever-ready, ever-enthusiastic cheerleaders through a galaxy of precision drilled motions. Rain or shine, they were there ready to do their best for school and team. Fame might not be theirs as was the fate of many they cheered onward, but they persevered to give the rooting section that enthusiasm which was often the spur that meant the difference between a win and a loss. Long hours of patient drill under the capable and watchful eye of Janet Rowland and head cheerleader, Nettie Cun- solo, were necessary to get the perfection that is so often taken for granted. M. Hamlvlm nn Um flanzblafza The Ramblers took the lid off the 1954 season when they met their traditional opening rival, Shade Township. ln spite of the one-sided victory, 33-O, it was predicted that the Ramblers would lose to their next opponent, the Altoona Mountain Lions. At Mansion Park the following week, all predictions were forgotten as Coach Kawchak's lighfg but harder fighting, footballers tamed the Mountain lions by defeating them 27-21. North Cambria was next on the list. With two wins under their belts, they came to Windber in high spirits and with great hopes. Both spirit and hope ebbed low as the Kawchakmen chalked up their third straight victory, 21-0. October 2 marked the day for the traditional battle with the Men of Troy which dates back to 1915. From start to finish, it was a hair-raiser and only the closing whistle made our win a certainty. The first half of the game saw Windber score twice, but the second half was a different story. From the beginning of the second half to the finish, Windber was on the defensive. But when the chips were down, the Ramblers came through with a hard fought 14-7 victory. The following Saturday night the Ramblers ran their winning streak to five games by defeating Portage 49-13. Portage scored twice-both times on an identical pass play. was meted out to the and a very enthusiastic a long time, the Cone- had had a perfect sea- Defeat at the hands of what is always their most unpredictable rival Ramblers the next Saturday. Punxsutawney also got the aftermath of the Conemaugh defeat when they were held to 6 points to Windber's 40. ln this game, Bob Dutzman kicked his nineteenth successive extra point. A half-time 14-point edge feature was the appearance of the high school band of Kingwood, West Virginia, directed by Louis Giusto, a Windber graduate. This game closed one of the most successful seasons in many years. The success can be attributed to the excellent physical condition of the players-the work of Alex Atty and student trainer, Bill Foltz, the sound coaching of John Kawchak and John Lochrie, the spirit and effort of the gridders themselves. Eighty Two .911 ' ll Nick Beckey working for a pin. Mm The lighter boys on Coach Alex Atty's wrestling squad suffered from the lack of experience. How- ever, the team still held its own since the heavier boys had a great deal of this valuable training. Nick Beckey was probably the most experienced wrestler on the squad. Experience, strength and guts, which were all found in Nick, made him a coach's dream. From the sidelines, the Arm and Leg appeared to be his favorite takedown. Once he had his man down, Nick slid from one hold to another. The result was almost always a victory and quite often a pin. The most patient wrangler was probably Bill Tiger Foltz. Bill, who also had much experience, was also a consistent winner on the mat. Jim Bowser's greatest assets were his terrific strength and his fight. The Chinese Nelson was Jim's favorite takedown and pinning hold. There were very few district wrestlers who could say that they escaped from .lim's vice-like grasp once he had applied this hold. When you were on the mat with Roy Seese you were in a dangerous position. Pete's technique was very unique in high school wrestling. His one aim when he was on the mat seemed to be to tear his opponent apart. Strength and perseverance were good weapons of his, but the fear which he created in his opponents was a far greater one. Among the other consistent winners were Tony DeMarco and Chuck Finnegan-both of whom, like Roy Seese, will be back next season. Tony DeMarco looks mad -doesn't he?
