X' f ,-.-fi ff' .Q ,Stand fun Lubn While in high school, a person has a iob to do: his iob is to get as much as he can out of his school experience, and to turn in creditable performance-to make a good record. Your school record is of great importance. Discriminating employers seek students who have attained the better scholastic records. ln general, the better your record, the better the chance of success. Certain traits re- vealed in your record will be useful in the business world. Work done outside of class is an indication of ambition, willingness to work, and ability to get along with others. Your attitude is vitally important. A good attitude can over- come many weaknesses and it is particularly true that a reasonable attitude on the part of young people is highly desirable. Your atti- tude can, in a great many ways, be the gateway to knowledge and understanding. If you have average intelligence, accept a iob eagerly and willingly, devote yourself to it loyally, and each day try to learn something new, you will make progress. There is very Cb Alb? ERNEST B. CASSLER Principal of High School little reason for the average person to fail. You should succeed iust as thousands have done before you. You have made a record and will continue to add to that record. May it be a good one. Good luck and best wishes for the future. -ERNEST CASSLER The time will soon be here when you will be adding your class of 167 young men and women to the total score of 4,371 who have left our high school as graduates. This great group is now scattered practically over the entire world. They are found in many occupations and professions. What they are doing and the re- nowned success of a great number of them has helped to build the record of what a course of training in our high school is really worth. Our high school is frequently measured by what our gradu- ates are doing, and how well they succeed after leaving high school. We have recently recognized in a public way the achievements of one of our graduates, Frank Kush, an All-American football player at Michigan State College who has also won scholastic distinction. Many others are frequently recognized for their suc- cess in various lines of endeavor. We trust that from your class many of you shall so devote themselves to some well-chosen line of work that you too shall be worthy of acclaim and excel the record of those who have gradu- ated before you. Our best wishes go with you. -CLYDE BOUNDS Eight t J, x F CLYDE E. BOUNDS Superintendent of Schools But ---2 Presidenf ........... ..... C HARLES ZANKEY Vice President ..... ..... McDowell, iudge of election, and Michael Zahurak cast their ballots under the check pre-election publicity. eagle eye of Francis McDowell. Remember the elections? We sure do! The Vote Wisely sign hanging in the hall put us into the right spirit. The hustle and bustle of petitions passing back and forth in the hall created enough confusion to add to the excitement. Those of us who knew we didn't have a Chinaman's chance to win rushed around like the rest of them 'cause, after all, everyone likes to see his name in print. All of our lessons in voting didn't prevent two frosh from squeezing into the same voting booth and some impatient fellows leaned up against the wall to mark their ballots. After it was all over, everyone had a word of congrad forthe winners and a broad shoulder for the losers to weep on. Taking a gander at the election results. We really tried hard to prepare swell luncheons for the teachers, but, gosh, we all get nervous. Remember the time we set the table wrong? When one of the girls fell asleep and let the cookies burn? Oh, Panic! The hardest part of it was when the guests arrived. With knocking knees and lumps in our throats we tried to make small talk until the chow was ready. It seemed so funny to see everyone seated at the table looking out of the corner of his eye waiting for someone to start eating. After the first bite, the tension died and we all had a happy time-there was the time we were envied by all the kids when we got out of school to see a demonstration of washing machines. NOVAK Faculfy Manager Managers Fifty Three Um n 124 Ratzwnpncf Gee! Ray gained 6 more yards! Well, this season finally ended but we're still worked up. The team didn't begin too well be- cause we had two losses and a tie in our first five games. Shade Township was our first conqueror and to say they knocked the props out from under us is putting it mildly. They only beat us 26-24, but those two points were enough. For some rea- son our players iust weren't able to convert extra points and this one great fault plagued us all year. l guess things can't always be perfect. We had a better break in the Altoona game and we were the victors by a 31-6 score. The game became somewhat boring since it was so one sided, but how pretty their new white uni- forms looked. To me, the most thrilling game was with Pitts- burgh North Catholic. lt was really breathtaking! When that final whistle blew with the score all tied up, l3-l3, l think everyone was relieved. Our game with Johnstown Catholic this year won't hold any particular place in my memory, because we really crushed the Crushers with a 39-6 victory. Our team went all out as usual and we never mind watching them as long as we're making the points. Not a wall-just Miller and Martell Filly Four mmirgy Wonder if he'll make it? I'd rather not think about the unfortunate ac- cident that fell upon us at Johnstown. Our peren- nial rivals became greater rivals by defeating us, 26-6. This is one of the darkest notes in my diary. Then we just breezed through the rest of the season. The points added up as we beat Cone- maugh Township 30-26, Punxsutawney, 47-6, and Somerset, 40-0. Gee! That little old pigskin was kicked around in those games. The Conemaugh Township game, as expected, was quite a thriller. Lucky for us, though, the ln- dians were in for a scalping and we gave it to them by winning, 30-26. l will admit we almost had the wind taken out of our sails in the Adams Township game. The safety in the first period was our only score and although the going got rough we came out on top, 2-O. We finally reached the finale and conquered Richland Township l2-O. Richland had a scrappy team, but when the whistle blew for the final time of the l952 season it was our Blue and White Ramblers who were out in front. Can hardly complain about the results since we lost only IO out ol 26, but some of those losses were real heartbreakers. lt will be a long time, we think, before another W. H. S. team will run up the number of points this year's team did. We ended with 1,633 and a 63 point average. We also hope it will be even longer before anyone equals the record of our big gun, Jim Kaplan. Jim ended up with 647 points and a 27 point average to break all district records. Although W. H. S. didn't come out first in the Tri-County League, our team sported its best record in the school's history with 7 wins and 5 losses. Coach Kaplan has a right to be proud of this year's team, and, from all outlooks, his next year's team will also make a name for itself. Sixty Three Fight tor that rebound, boys! Chuck Baughman can surely make those corner shots Uwt 5 ' faqmzt BILL HUGHES Boy, Diz looked plenty O. K. against Ebensburg. He didn't always get to play the whole game, but when he did play, he was really in there fighting. He was our only left-handed gun- ner which seemed unusual. He may not have racked up points, but points aren't everything. MATT KLENA Don't know how W. H. S.'s team will get along next year with all this year's senior stars grad- uating. Matt, of course, was one of the big five who surely came through on defense. We didn't get to see him shoot very often, but some of his beautiful set shots took our breath away. BILL RAINEY We'll a l w a y s remember Bunker with his high average of successful shots. ,True, he did- n't take many shots, but he man- aged to make most of the ones he did take. Our team surely was glad that Bill came from Cleveland to play for W. H. S. Here are two of Jim's 68 points. JIM KAPLAN We'll never forget the night Jim poured in 68 points and set a state record for field goals made in one game. Jimmy was the big gun for our team this year. Our 6-2 center surely made a name for him- self. Golly! He was mighty hot those nights. We could count on our captain for his 25 points in iust about every game. Jim holds the individual scoring record for Windber High School and is a three year letterman. He really racked up a lot of points for the Ramblers. fbpllp, ?5.wP, ' ws wwf? fx? The story of Mrs. Gilbreth and her l2 children couldn't have pleased us more. It was the wonderful story of a widow who became a career woman to keep her family together. lt wasn't an easy struggle with so.me of the boy friends her daughters found, some of the general mischievement that the boys got into, and people's attitude toward career women.
