Jnlmwnlzd The story of Windber is the story of coal. Since the discovery and development of the faimous B seam of bituminous coal in the Paint Creek Basin, coal and Windber have been synonymous. Its past and its present have been tied to coal but what about its future? Coal, itself, faces a great future. For the scientist has discovered that coal chemicals are like the fabled Aladdin's lamp-with them, anything is possible. Each day adds to the fabulous possibilities of the uses of King Coal. As we move about in our daily routine, at home and in school, we heed- lessly pass by countless examples of the scientist's magic: the soft drink at football games, the phonograph record that blares out at a pep dance, the aspirin that coaches consume after games, anti-histamines that are for the sniffles, the per- fume that wafts past you in the hall, the white nylon socks that all girls feel they must wear, the cellophane wrapper on that candy bar that you throw carelessly towards that plastic lcoall wastebasket. All of these and about 200,000 other products are examples of scientific wizardry applied to coal. Today with the scientist ever at our elbow helping to uncover some new power of that great giant of the earth, King Coal, Windber can be glad that in all probability today, as in yesteryear, its future is tied to those bituminous coal seams. With the ever widening field of opportunities for the use of coal, it is the hope of the Class of 1952 that Windber will become aware of its potential great- ness in the .manufacture of plastics, drugs, paints, etc., and give us, its future citizens, broader opportunities for having a better life in the community in which we live.
