Jnlmwnlzd The story of Windber is the story of coal. Since the discovery and development of the faimous B seam of bituminous coal in the Paint Creek Basin, coal and Windber have been synonymous. Its past and its present have been tied to coal but what about its future? Coal, itself, faces a great future. For the scientist has discovered that coal chemicals are like the fabled Aladdin's lamp-with them, anything is possible. Each day adds to the fabulous possibilities of the uses of King Coal. As we move about in our daily routine, at home and in school, we heed- lessly pass by countless examples of the scientist's magic: the soft drink at football games, the phonograph record that blares out at a pep dance, the aspirin that coaches consume after games, anti-histamines that are for the sniffles, the per- fume that wafts past you in the hall, the white nylon socks that all girls feel they must wear, the cellophane wrapper on that candy bar that you throw carelessly towards that plastic lcoall wastebasket. All of these and about 200,000 other products are examples of scientific wizardry applied to coal. Today with the scientist ever at our elbow helping to uncover some new power of that great giant of the earth, King Coal, Windber can be glad that in all probability today, as in yesteryear, its future is tied to those bituminous coal seams. With the ever widening field of opportunities for the use of coal, it is the hope of the Class of 1952 that Windber will become aware of its potential great- ness in the .manufacture of plastics, drugs, paints, etc., and give us, its future citizens, broader opportunities for having a better life in the community in which we live. is K. 1, dble jupmviubn CLYDE E. But though we gripe about the fact, We soon get in the same old track. OCTOBER October brings the football season- A time we all like-and with reason. For then the days go hurrying past, Until the Johnstown game comes at last NOVEMBER November brings both ioy and woe lCause the football scores are lowl But then there is a short vacation, When we find time for relaxation. DECEMBER December brings a hope of respite As vacation days come into sight. The assembly program of music and verse Sends us home for better or worse. JANUARY January finds us in the groove As into mid-term exams we now move. But the .month has other things to do Basketball and wrestling get our attention oo FEBRUARY February gets us in a great big dither As our glances wonder hither and thither. For from our midst we select a twosome The King and Queen of Hearts-we choose MARCH March convinces us we're in a grind As the long stretch ahead we begin to min But with music festivities in the school Work, sometimes, is not the rule. APRIL April brings some looked for events When we combine dollars and scents For Easter finery we need the dough, The scents, for the Prom, when the lights are low. MAY May's the month for which we long llt'll take us years to know we're wrongl When we'll hear the bell's last dong. With dances and picnics and other fun, We soon find our last year's done. Thirteen The paintings used on the division pages of the i952 Stylus are the work of a well-known Windber artist, Lawrence Whitaker. He has found his subiects in the everyday scenes of life in a coal town -- a tired, grimy miner hurrying home from work, loaded coal cars trans- porting the magic mineral to mills and factories, men on their way to work kneeling outside a church praying that they may safely return to their families at the end of the day. Simple things- yes, but immortalized on canvas. --,,f FENCE WHWA O TNGYJYLA ..- IL . He thinks he's good for nothing until he saves the day when his life story is sold to a movie company. Betty Makuch as Teensie, and Daniel Kopcik as Jimmy John try to get those cues all lined up. Miss Murphy, the director and Senior Class adviser, succeeded with the help of an able cast in giving Windber one of the best plays ever given in our high school. Sally Boyd, as Mrs. Biddle, and Ernest Papinchak as Joey break the news to his mother, Grace DePoIo, that he intends to marry Betty, Sue Callen, and give up his ambition to be a doctor. sw Thirty Five M , was ii? is A self-taught man, Mr. Whitaker has never attended an art school or received instruction in painting. As a child, he dis- played such interest in art that his mother emptied a room and turned it into a studio for him. A barber, by trade, he ,now paints in his spare time. These elections are conducted by the P. O. D. classes under the direction of Miss Mur- phy as a unit of class work. The details of carrying out an election by use of the preferential ballot are taught in social studies classes in preparation for holding class elections and other elec- tive activities. ln these photographs are reproduced some of the typical scenes on election day. One that the photographer missed was the iam around the bulletin boards as election results are posted. Co-captain, Len Rubal, led the Rambler attack, scoring all of Windber's points in the 12-7 victory. This gave them 17 wins in 19 starts with the Panthers. MOUNTAIN LIONS DEFEAT RAMBLERS SEPTEMBER 15, 1951 - Windber The Altoona Mountain Lions tamed a spirited Windber Rambler team to the score of 12-7. Windber scored first on a fumble with Rubal rambling 89 yards to paydirt. Then he calmly booted the extra point to put the Ramblers in front at half time 7-O. BEAVER FALLS RUNS OVER WINDBER SEPTEMBER 21, 1951 - Beaver Falls Windber was upset by a spirited Beaver Falls team by a 25-O score. The time element figured pro.minentIy in the Rambler defeat with the Tigers rolling up four quick touchdowns at the ends of the first and second halves. Len Rubal's running was about the only bright spot in the Rambler attack. WINDBER BOWS TO JOHNSTOWN CATHOLIC SEPTEMBER 29, 1951 - Windber In their first victory over Windber, Johnstown Catholic side-stepped the Ramblers with a score of 16-7. The Crimson Crushers had to come from behind to win as the Ramblers took the opening kickoff and marched 56 yards for the score with Terry Fagan and Len Rubal alternately carrying the ball. Rubal scored 7 points to run his total to 26. CONEMAUGH TWP. TROUNCES RAMBLERS OCTOBER 13, 1951 - Windber The Conemaugh Twp. Indians were not to be denied as they ran and passed their way to a 39-O win over the Windber Ramblers. Stopped by Windber for the past two seasons from having undefeated campaigns, the Indians finally broke the iinx by fielding an all-around superior team. Wmdber Cheerleaders: Mary Beth Seaton, Captain Janet Campitell Agnes Koshute Joan Czaikowski Betty Makuch Joan Sweltz Mary Pachella Joan Karczewski Joanne Pristow Ann Mauger RAMBLERS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO TROJANS OCTOBER 6, 1951 - Johnstown The Johnstown Trojans defeated the Windber Ramblers 7-O but luck was on their shoulders all the way. Windber was stopped three times inside the Johnstown ten. The Trojans got their only score on a blocked punt and a penalty. Because of fine team play on the part of the Ramblers, they led in most of the statistics. Windber was de- prived of a touchdown when a clipping penalty was called on Len Rubal's 46 yard run to pay- dirt in the first quarter. WINDBER SLIPS BY CRESSON IN THRILLER OCTOBER 20, 1951 - Windber The Windber Ramblers finally broke their los- ing streak as they dropped Cresson 13-7. Ralph Facciani passed to Bob Hudy to climax an 83 yard scoring drive. The winning tally took place during the last minute and a half of the game. Bob Hudy also scored earlier on a 34 yard run. The Windber team played like the Ramblers of old. At the Conemaugh Township Game: A. Koshute, J. Karczewski, J. Czaikowski, M. B. Seaton, J. Sweltz PUNXSUTAWNEY EDGES RAMBLERS OCTOBER 26, 1951 - Punxsutawney The Windber High School Ramblers went back into a rut as they dropped a close decision to Punxy 10-7. The Ramblers' only score came on Facciani's pass to Hancharick with the speedy end scoring standing up. Rubal converted to tie the score at 7-7. A spectacular field goal de- flected by an upright proved to be the deciding factor. ADAMS TWP. STINGS WINDBER RAMBLERS NOVEMBER 10, 1951 - Windber The Adams Twp. Hornets slaughtered the Wind- ber gridders here 32-7. The Ramblers moved 68 yards for their lone tally with the big gain of the drive a 32 yard pass from Terry Fagan to Jim Holman. Fagan plunged over from the three and Rubal converted. ,am '52 Qkfg Silva! .91 ROW l-I. Kleban, Boyko, G. Petro, L. Rubal. M. Klena: ROW 2-H. Keirn, I. Kaplan, B. Applevard B. Marlizo, B. Hughes. P. Windber's hey day in basketball, the Roarin' Twenties, was so long ago as to have become practically a memory. For the last several years Windber teams have been slowly breaking into the winning column. This year's seniors, at the beginning ofthe year, gave promise of helping the team come Out ofthe Dark. Len Rubal, 5' 9 guard, held a position on the varsity squad for three years. Len was an especially fine teamplayer and quite good at set shots. Another three year varsity player was Harry Keirn. This 6' l forward was especially known for his set shots. He was, also, an ex- cellent foul shooter. ln his junior year, he was one of the winners in Junior Pitt's 'Foul shooting contest. Hindered by iniuries during football season, Bill Marfizo found himself on the side lines again when basketball season opened due to an iniured hand. This 6' 2 forward could have been a deciding factor in putting Windber into the winning column. A versatile and dependable player, George Petro always came through with a consistently good game. His long set shots were hair- raising but usually good. Yudo was also a winner in Pitt's foul shooting contest last year. From his towering height of 6' 5 , Bill Appleyard was able to pick off rebounds and convert them into points. A handy fellow with the ball, Apples was also adept at keeping the opponents from scoring. l if Up and at 'em had by oll.
