These qualities have instilled in us a deepening pride in our individual achievements and in our achievements as a part of the school. She has rejoiced in our victories, and through words of encouragement and inspiration she has consoled us in our defeats. By her cheerful and patient attitude, she has taught us the art of good sportsmanship as well as the sl-:ill and grace needed in the performance of the established sports and the exciting new activities she has promoted and developed at Winchester. With sincere gratitude the class of 1959 dedicates the Tbirtledown to Mrs. Louis O. Caputo. 3

THE WINCHESTER-THURSTON SCHOCL F OREWORD As we arrive at the end of our senior year, we begin to appreciate fully what our education means to us. At this moment of our lives, we are strong, confident, and de- termined not be disillusioned or led astray. We know who we are and where we want to gog we have limitless hope for the future. We are happier than we have ever been before. Being close to our very early childhood, we can recognize the fallacy of the general concept that those were our happiest years. We know that this is true only in the sense that those were the years when it took the most effort on the part of our teachers and parents to make us happy. Our education at Winchester has so greatly broadened our horizons and deepened our capacity to understand and therefore to ap- preciate that we now enjoy not only instinctively, as we did when we were younger, but also intellectually. It is much easier to please us now that we have been taught about the multitude of pleasing things in the world. In this yearbook, we wish to depict, through the inherent truth of great art, this process of growth into perceptive, appre- ciative young women. J. K. C.
