THE WINCHESTER-THURSTON SCHOCL F OREWORD As we arrive at the end of our senior year, we begin to appreciate fully what our education means to us. At this moment of our lives, we are strong, confident, and de- termined not be disillusioned or led astray. We know who we are and where we want to gog we have limitless hope for the future. We are happier than we have ever been before. Being close to our very early childhood, we can recognize the fallacy of the general concept that those were our happiest years. We know that this is true only in the sense that those were the years when it took the most effort on the part of our teachers and parents to make us happy. Our education at Winchester has so greatly broadened our horizons and deepened our capacity to understand and therefore to ap- preciate that we now enjoy not only instinctively, as we did when we were younger, but also intellectually. It is much easier to please us now that we have been taught about the multitude of pleasing things in the world. In this yearbook, we wish to depict, through the inherent truth of great art, this process of growth into perceptive, appre- ciative young women. J. K. C. The paintings reproduced in this yearbook are from Michelangelds Sistine Chapel, through the courtesy of the American Academy in Rome. The quotations on the divider pages are from the works of Kahlil Gibran. 2 u I I I I I I .l ll il ll ll ll ll ll ll DEDICATION She has been more than a teacherg she has been a friend dear to us for her uick Cl wit, her loyalty and devotion to the interests of the school, and her enthusiasm and genuine concern for each of her pupils. These qualities have instilled in us a deepening pride in our individual achievements and in our achievements as a part of the school. She has rejoiced in our victories, and through words of encouragement and inspiration she has consoled us in our defeats. By her cheerful and patient attitude, she has taught us the art of good sportsmanship as well as the sl-:ill and grace needed in the performance of the established sports and the exciting new activities she has promoted and developed at Winchester. With sincere gratitude the class of 1959 dedicates the Tbirtledown to Mrs. Louis O. Caputo. 3 THISTLEDOWN STAFF We of the Thistledown staff would like to express our deep appreciation to Mrs. Hutson for her invaluable assistance and encouragement. The girls meet with Miss Philput under whose wise and gentle guidance they recognize and discuss honestly various problems which arise throughout the school year. By solving these problems, the Student Council deepens our respect for the strength and soundness of the Winduester- Thurston ideals of self-government and calm, reasonable judgment. BODNAR Paris has her left bank, New York her Washington Square, but Winchester- Thurston-ah!-she has her Art Club. Un- der the direction of Mrs. Victor Bodnar, the artists of Winchester create their master- pieces which can be viewed on the club's bulletin board. For the first time, the Art Club has become so large that it has become necessary to divide it into two groups so that the girls may have more room to work on their various projects. This past year they did pen and ink drawings, portraits, lino- leum blocks, mosaics, and creative embroid- ery. C. R. SHAKESPEARE Why do we join Drama Club? To develop poise and the ability to speak well before a group, as well as to learn the time-honored art of acting and the more recent arts of production, lighting, direction, and costuming. Even more meaningful are the com- panionship and good fun of rehearsals and the sense of accomplishment of the performance. To these ends, we worked on the delivery of speeches, stage- craft, and pantomimesg we gave a Christmas program and a Spring production, and we also co-operated with Shady Sidels Gargoyle Society in their produc- tion of Peter Ustinov's The Empty Chair. Under the able direction of Mrs. Arthur Wilmurt, we have en- joyed ourselves in realizing our aims. C. A. R. ' KAI-ILIL GIBRAN We were four in that small kindergarten in 1945, four, who fourteen years later would carry yellow roses and twining green ivy. This thought, however, was not fore- most in our minds as we watched arrogant First Graders filing past our door. We, too, became First Graders and with our several new friends began the trudge through the Lower School. Our goal was now to be sophisticated Seventh Graders, and our glances were directed up toward them. As new girls joined us in each successive year, our class soon reached its goal and acted the role of Lower School Seniors. For a brief moment, we looked down upon those younger and upon the happy experiences of those years, but were soon moved off to the Upper School, dethroned from our citadel into what seemed to us the lowly position of Eighth Graders. Once again, our heads were raised, and our eyes were filled with admiration for the Seniors. We watched them as they came into study hall, admired their courage as they made ntunerous complicated announce- ments, respected their authority, enjoyed their clever advertisements, envied their cars, and stared at them, though we tried not to, as they sat studying on the steps during the warm Spring afternoons while we were being put through the grueling paces of an afternoon gym class. Suddenly it is June, 1959. We realize that we have completed our life at Winchester. Once again, as in the Seventh Grade, rather than look ahead toward the unknown, we prefer to focus our attention upon the past. In our Senior year, problems depressed us, their solutions elated us, and the experience gained in effecting these solutions increased our understanding of democratic principles and of human relationships. just as important, however, has been the growth of our class, for by sharing our common problems, we have become a single, strongly united body. In attaining this unity, we have reached our final goal at Winchester-Thurston and must now depart. We hesitate, but realizing that Winchester will remain a part of us for- ever, we are sincerely happy to be able to say in a clear, unified voice, Farewell. S. C.
