Phillips is as much a part of the history of Pittsburgh as its open-hearth l'iii'naces, its steel ingots and its three rivers convergriiig at the Golden 'I'i'iang'le. She was a woinzin as tcnmlei' as the conventional po1'ti':iit of a mother-indeed, she was chosen the Ainerican Mother' of 1944. Act- ually, she was a woman of extraoi-1lin:ii'y sti's-nglli and energy, of deep convictions and of great execu- tive abilities. She helped to establish oi' iinprovi- some of the iinportant civic va-ntures in this coni- munity: the Brasheal' Settlement, the Juvenile Court and the South Side Hospital. With all thesi- projects she still had the time to iiitercst hersell' in the problems of Winchester-Thurston School, to find 21!l0l fl0fl piece of flll'llltlll'0, to improve the lib1'a1'y and to amuse the girls with chats which always contained thoughts of true value, llei' desire to niake others feel appreciatell was expressecl in the flowers and hooks she sent the sehool on count' less occasions, and the speakers she invited to talk to us. Her special talent was her ability to operate on a large scale on the Board of Education with the same skill with which she would locate an upright piano for the 1-hildrcn of a settlement house. To each she gave llfll' ability, hei' warmth and her effectiveness. It is because of the unique contrilnition of Mrs. John M. Phillips to Pittsburgh and to our school that the yearbook staff is making a contribution to the scholarship fund established in hei' name, for we feel that she was a truly reniai-kahle woman.
