B -sf xCXJllCX.NlCXN!C'gJ41 B!-MSL: HllllWOIlll We treasure the dance program, the favor from the prom, the first orchid carefully preserved in the vague hope that in future years these trivial items will bring back happy memories of our youth. In the same way, we have tried in the yearbook through pictures posed and unposed, through biographical sketches and feature pages, to capture and preserve this year of graduation. In the years to come some of us will have daughters who will go to Winchester-Thurston. They will come home with statements about assignments that are too long, tests that are unfair. We will listen without sympathy and will speak in the aloof manner of adults, insisting that all will work out in the end. For the joys of our school years will have completely overshadowed the minor complaints. As we throw off our black-watch plaid we will assume another uniform. Instead of the skirt, a basic black dressg instead of the blue blazer, the tailored suitg in place of the class ring, the wed- ding' band-for we insist upon imposing certain patterns upon ourselves. But the following pages will prove to a certainty the infinite variety that girls can achieve, even in one costume. Our positions will change. Some who are higher on the ladder will level off, some down below will climb to the top. No one can predict our future lives, but the past is secure forever. We present this yearbook to show that our studies, our games, our dances, and friends of these past years will remain a very meaningful experience which no future events can erase. We have enjoyed carefree lives at a time when the world itself has gone through a very troubled period. Our days at Winchester-Thurston may well be the most serene we shall ever enjoy. We must treasure these years, for the memory of a happy youth can never be taken from us. The happy years have left their imprint on us all. M.E.S. CXJllfXJllCXJllCXJ MRS. RACHEL MCCORMICK HOUSTON We would like to dedicate the 1958 THISTLEDOWN to one who has set for us an example of gentle but firm authority, and of unselfish devotion. She started us on the road to maturity and first inspired our love for the school and its spirit. She has made the school a part of herself and she, in turn, is a vital part of the school's administration. Having loved and admired her for many years, we thank her for her guidance and We honor her-our assistant headmistress, Mrs. Rachel McCormick Houston. RACIIIGL McCORMICK HOUSTON Assislruit Herzdniislress MRS. JOHN M. PHILLIPS Mrs, John M. Phillips is as much a part of the history of Pittsburgh as its open-hearth l'iii'naces, its steel ingots and its three rivers convergriiig at the Golden 'I'i'iang'le. She was a woinzin as tcnmlei' as the conventional po1'ti':iit of a mother-indeed, she was chosen the Ainerican Mother' of 1944. Act- ually, she was a woman of extraoi-1lin:ii'y sti's-nglli and energy, of deep convictions and of great execu- tive abilities. She helped to establish oi' iinprovi- some of the iinportant civic va-ntures in this coni- munity: the Brasheal' Settlement, the Juvenile Court and the South Side Hospital. With all thesi- projects she still had the time to iiitercst hersell' in the problems of Winchester-Thurston School, to find 21!l0l fl0fl piece of flll'llltlll'0, to improve the lib1'a1'y and to amuse the girls with chats which always contained thoughts of true value, llei' desire to niake others feel appreciatell was expressecl in the flowers and hooks she sent the sehool on count' less occasions, and the speakers she invited to talk to us. Her special talent was her ability to operate on a large scale on the Board of Education with the same skill with which she would locate an upright piano for the 1-hildrcn of a settlement house. To each she gave llfll' ability, hei' warmth and her effectiveness. It is because of the unique contrilnition of Mrs. John M. Phillips to Pittsburgh and to our school that the yearbook staff is making a contribution to the scholarship fund established in hei' name, for we feel that she was a truly reniai-kahle woman. These officers stand for the ideals and principles of the school and especially for our school motto: THINK ALSO OF THE COMFORT AND RIGHTS OF OTHERS. This year is a great milestone for the Student Council, for the members have decided to introduce a constitution to guide and assist them in solving their problems. C. M. J. The Glee Clubs, presented a Christmas program at the Harmarville Rehabilitation Cen- ter. The girls of the Senior Glee Club performed a popular medley of three songs and two selections from The Messiah at a joint concert at Kiski. In the spring, a festival entitled The Best of Baroque was presented for parents and friends. The Glee Clubs are privileged to be under the professional direction of Mrs. Selma B, Kress. She has, for many years, devoted her time and skill to the musical program of Win- chester-Thurston. S. E. D. lilll lllllll Under the direction of Mrs. Arthur Wilmurt, the Drama Club presented two productions this year. The first was a workshop production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol given at Christmas time at the Hamarville Rehabilitation Center, the Alumnae Luncheon, and' at our own Carol Sing. As a climax to the year's activity the club presented Thornton Wi1der's Our Town. Boys from the Gargoyle Society at Shadyside Academy participated in the -production. After the cast had been chosen, there were many jobs on crew, costuming and make-up committees. All iifty-eight members of the Drama Club had a part in the production, gaining not only theatrical knowledge and background, but also beneficial training in diction and speech. A J.J. Sl lllll DRAMA lllllll JIINIIIR DRAMA lllllli In spite of its small size, the Art Club, under the direction of Mrs. Victor Bodnar, is one of the most important groups at Winchester-Thurston. In this club, the girls are able to express themselves freely through the mediums of paint, pencil and clay. The Art Club contributes to the decoration of the school for various events during the year and occasionally posts its creations on the bulletin-board in the hall. M.F.L. Alll lllllll Minor Sports develop skills in in- dividual sports which can be continued many years after we have left school. There were many facets to this year's Minor Sports Program. In the fall, there was Bowling for recreation and tourna- ment prizes. In the winter, the Chess Club was active, learning the fine points of Chess and participating in matches with other schools. Also, this winter, the Seniors formed a Fencing Club which, under the direction of Mr. Kung, learned the fundamentals of Fencing. In the spring, Swimming was intro- duced as a recreational sport and was heartily enjoyed. Finally, when warmer weather came, there was instruction in both Golf and Tennis. M. L. In the two years that Miss Murray has been at Winchester-Thurston, she has made Gym Class much more interesting, coached our varsities, developed all our Minor Sports activities, and initiated a wonderful sports program for Class Day. This year, Miss Murray has formed The Leaders' Club. One girl from each class is chosen as a member. These girls take over such responsibilities as roll-taking in Gym Class and supervising skill tests. This new club promises to be an invaluable part of the Winchester-Thurston sports program. M.L.W. YU' RISIIII Ill x 5'- scxsucxn lIC1LNlCi-NICK iAliiWHl We have come to the end of our senior year. The things we have worried about, the events we anticipated, are over. The memories are ours. Winchester has fulfilled our greatest expectations during the school years, and has fortified us with a firm background in preparation for life. We are grateful to our headmistress and faculty not only for building this background but for providing inspiration, taking a genuine interest in us individually, and giving us their friendship. We thank them as we thank our parents and families, our classmates, and everyone who made pos- sible and shared in this rich experience. The four months between graduation and the first day of college constitute a giant step in our realization that one stage in our lives has drawn to a close. Now We must face our problems unbuttressed by teachers or parents. But whatever we ultimately do, the basic values, we have gained at Win- chester-Thurston will be our foundation for future strength and growth. Insofar as these values are sound, we will grow in wisdom, maturity, and productivity, As We leave Winchester we say farewell in words, but in our hearts we never leave.
