They learned to ride and hunt, they were trained to be armor bearers for the knights whose status they hoped to acquire some day, they were taught to havc respect for their super- iors and devotion to their king. When these pages reached their teens, and had success- fully Finished their elementary training, they became squires and later, when they had proved that they were fearless and courage- ous beyond the call of duty, they became knights. They promised to be valiant, cour- teous, and loyalf, They were expected to resist bribery and to despise caution, to risk their lives for their lord or companions. They were to help the needy and to spread the good will and fine reputation of the court throughout the land. This book is dedicated to the pages, squires, and knights of our school. We too have been given the advantage of fine training and edu- cation in our years at Winchester-Thurston. As Seniors we hope that we have succeeded in acquiring some part of the knowledge our school has provided for us, and that as a result we shall be known for our valor- ous deeds throughout our lives as were the knights of old. We now present to you with the aid of pictures, drawings, and writing, the steps in the training We have received in the hap- py, Worthwhile years We have spent at Win- chester-Thurston. S. She has shown us not the factual side of know- ledge but rather the intangible attributes of good womanhood. She has taught us to distinguish right from Wrongg she has been to us the symbol of all that Winchester-Thurston stands for. XVe have tried in various ways to show our appreciation, but can think of no way more fitting than that our Hnal contribu- tion to the school be a tribute to her. With love and gratitude, we, the seniors, dedicate the 1956 Thistledown to Miss Mary Frances Philput. JD IX QW' z In March of last year, the pupils of the Winchester-Thurston School attended a cere- mony, at which it was announced that Miss Mary Frances Philput, dean of the upper school, was to become headmistress of the entire school and that Mrs. Rachel McCor- mick Houston, Who had been dean of the lower school, was to be assistant headmis- tress. NVe are now at the end of the first complete year of this administration, a year Mrs. J-lauslm . .9-ff:-Y which has brought many good things to the school. Both Miss Philput and Mrs. Houston are themselves Winchester graduates. After they had completed their academic education at Mt. Holyoke and Wellesley, they became members of the teaching staff here under Dr. Mary A. Graham Mitchell. Their present positions, the culmination of years of life and love given to Winchester-Thurston, are tri- butes to two great ladies. r, 3 Mui Miss Philput ,. ' Left to right, frst row: E. My kingdom for a horse 'Es I V A Q: tf . ,Mm 3, A 44, .- s 1 if His Majesty, King Arthur Camelot, England Dear Arthur, We have just heard about the magnificent feat of your pulling Excalibur out of the rock and want to offer our congratulations. We had hoped to be at Camelot to deliver them in person, but our senior year has been too full to warrant our taking the trip. I know you have been busy getting your court in order but here at Winchester-Thurston our life has been far from empty. Ijll try to give you a brief resume of our year. Our first day as seniors was as exciting as your first day as king and lim sure will be remembered. The best part of this day was eating lunch in the senior lunchroom, the thrill of which never wore off. Soon afterwards we elected the officers to guide us through the year. The Halloweien Party was the second memorable event of the school year. As always, we had a good time putting on our own skit and enjoying the others, especially that of the faculty. Some of us had been appearing at Jonas Studio, looking our best, every day after school and by the day of the Hallowe'en Party everyone had had her senior picture taken. Before we realized what had happened, so accustomed were we to meet- ing the challenges of school life. Thanksgiving vacation had come, bringing with it the most thrilling part of our senior year, the presentation of the class rings. We felt, as we received these rings, much as a man feels as he is knighted. Our rings are a symbol of the love and gratitude we feel for the school and We shall always cherish them. The end of vacation brought concentrated work on the Thistleflown, our yearbook. Surprisingly enough, our deadline was Hnally met and we had the product of many hours of work to turn over to the publisher. We even had enough money to pay for it. We worked so diligently on the yearbook as well as on our school subjects that Christmas vacation was soon upon us. The seniors gave their annual Christmas Carol Sing in which Lynne Crookston distinguished herself by singing an unexpected solo. The junior Prom, a tre- mendous success, was held during Christmas vacation. We returned to school in 1956 to study for the approaching exams and to look in awe at Sally's pin. At about this time, several of the seniors had an experience that is almost too disgraceful to mention. Unlike your gallant knights who win battles in spite of overwhelming odds, these few brave seniors were defeated by the eighth grade whom they had challenged to a snowball fight. It ended in friend- liness and laughter on both sides, so we felt we had won. After spring vacation not one of us could tell you what happended to the time until the Senior Follies. The outcome seemed very dubious but we were amazed and pleased to see that the audience enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed working on it. Commencement, the climax of our years at VVinchester-Thurston, crept up on us just as we were beginning to wish it would not. We felt on this night, as we walked down the aisle carrying our roses, just as you felt when you became king. Commencement night was climaxed by the Senior Prom which brought us to the close of the year and brings me to the close of this letter. We hope that your reign will mean as much to you as our senior year meant to us. Again our congratulations to you. To experience the real meaning and power of prayer. 5. To apply the principles of Christ to the proh- lems of the world in which we live. These purposes of the Northfield League are accomplished through meetings throughout the Winter with religious leaders of all denomina- tions, and in June at Westminster College by a conference which is attended by girls from Pitts- burg, Erie, Buffalo, and other surrounding cities. At any time during the year if you chanced to go to the second floor of the cottage, you would see scattered about various Works of art hy various artists. This room is the headquarters of the art club. There, in the course of the year, the participants Work together in such media as clay, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, and cray- ons. Girls Who have creative ability as well as those who do not, have a chance to use or develop their talent in the art club While they work with others who share their interests. The art club, with the course in History of Art, gives the girls at lrVinchester-Thurston a firm founda- tion for art in principle and in practice. Here we have been taught to be valiant, courteous, and loyal, and here the guidance of our teachers and their faith in us have helped us to win victories over difficulties and disappointments. Many of us came with no clear idea of our goal in life, but we are leaving with some understanding of what it should be. A standard has been set for us which, if We live up to it, will give us a feel- ing for the comforts and rights of othersv the rest of our lives. Consideration, courtesy, and sincerity are the stepping stones to our goal. Our headmistress and our teachers have taught us the value of the standards established at Winchester-Thurston, and have shown us how they may be the foundation for our useful lives as Women. We shall always cherish the memories of Winchester-Thurston's beloved tra- ditions: the chapel services, May Day, Founderls Day, individual class projects. We shall remember the Christmas singing, Father-Daughter evenings, the hockey games which we sometimes won and sometimes lost. As we cast our last glance as students at the pillar'd portalsf we shall do so with a sigh, for it is not easy to leave the school which has been our firm foundation for the life ahead of us. And yet, for every sigh there is a smile, a smile denoting our determination to prove to others how successfully we can put into practice the training we have been given in the best days of our life -- here at Win- chester-Thurston.
