Gott :Farewell Now that our pilgrimage through Winchester-Tliurston has drawn to a close, we realize that we have come to the end of an important part of our lives, the cnd of our high school days, llut we should prefer to call this a beginning-ff a beginning of a new life. new experiences, new knowledge. l'or the pllgrlrnage of life has no end. and like fIhauccr's pilgrimage we too must move with joyful hearts toward our destinations. wherever they may be. Eventually we shall all find a purpose in life. Although as yet most of us do not know what it is, we know that it cannot be attained without careful prepara- tion. Here at Winchester. like a man scaling a mountain which is firm and large at its base and which gradually reaches a peak, we have begun the skyward climb to our individual goals. We have found that the ascent is not always easy. Many times we have be- come discouraged and felt that we do not measure up to Winchesteris standards. And yet for every disappointment there has been a double joy which has made us realize how truly grateful we are to those who have counseled us. to our teachers who in our last years here have come to mean much more than instructors to us. They are the ones who have both preached and practiced the ideals that every Winchester girl is proud to claim. We are certain that we are leaving thy pillared portals with greater rewards than we could have hoped for, and that we are prepared to continue successfully in life if we follow the high standards that have been set before us: courtesy. graciousness, integrity, and above all, consideration for others. Under the leadership of Mrs. Arthur Wilmurt, the members gain theatrical knowledge and background as well as beneficial training in diction and speech. Among the ac- tivities of the year are various speech exercises and preliminary dramatic training, the selection and presentation of a spring production, and a trip to Carnegie Tech to see the annual Shakespearean pre- sentation. Shrill cries of 'Whereis my skirtiw, or Wait for mel pierce the air. At exactly eight o'clock nineteen pairs of oxford-clad feet troop down the stairs for hreakfast. Beds are made hurriedly, yet somehow the rooms always manage to look neat and clean when the girls leave for school. After school the house girls participate in one of the extra-curricular activities. From five to six letter-writing, record-listening, and telephoning are the favorite pastimes. Dinner is at six, followed by two hours of study. Afteristudy hall milk and crackers are served and at ten oiclock when lights outii rings, the tired girls climb into bed, ready for a good nights rest. L W c c if . .1 an 'RQ' 9.- Q . .Q ' Q ,l. BRAUN Chairman of the Board of Trustees 420 if Al: 41- Euping nf the Subnet Our pilgrimage of faith in the future will be possible only if we are able to leave behind us a secure past . . . a permanent place of learning from whose portals will come those schooled to follow us. Miss Alice Thurston and Doctor Mary A. Graham Mitchell laid educational foundations by establishing the Thurston and Winchester schools. In nineteen hundred and thirty-Hve. these schools were consolidated to form the 'Winchester-Thurston' School. Then, in the year nineteen hundred and fifty-three, dreams and aspirations became reality when Winchester-Thurston was purchas- ed from the Mitchell estate by a non-profit organization composed of distinguished alnmnae and friends. To Mr. Arthur E. Braun, prominent civic leaderg Mrs. Vincent Dwyer,-Jr., alumnae presidentg and Mrs. Franklin Hoflman, former alumnae president, much credit is due for the fund drive and the creation of the new corporation. Funds for the purchase were raised in donations and pledges by the Winchester-Tliurston School Incorporated, a newly chartered group with a distinguished thirty-member board of trustees, aided by parents. friends of the school, pupils and alumnae. It is with great satisfaction that the class of nineteen hundred and fifty-four leaves Winchester-Thurston knowing that her pillared portals are now and will remain a part of a secure temple of know- ledge. The success of the founders' work on behalf of the school was evidenced by the great interest shown in the future of Winchester- Thurston by civic leaders, prominent citizens, alumnae, and friends. To those who have made this security possible, we now express our deep appreciation. B. G. Ulrnhute MRS, VINCENT C. DWYER, JR. President of Winchester.Thurston lk Alumnae Association Had it not been for their suggestion, the purchase of Winchester-Thurston by its friends might never have been seriously considered. Had they not worked zealously and given generously of their time and money, the transfer might not have been completed. A group of women have made it possible for us, the pupils of Winchester-Thurston, to continue our pilgrimage, rich in spiritual and intel- lectual experiences, dedicated to womanly earnestness, to dignity, and to the consideration of others. Their repre- sentatives comprise at least one third of the Board of Trustees, which has been organized to advise in the .various functions of the school's business and administration. The group of which we are speaking is the Alumnae Association of the Win- chester-Thurston School. And it is to this association that the 1954 Thistledown is proud to pay tribute. Indeed the 1954 class stands at a unique place in the history of the school: the place where the old and the new merge. We know that upon graduation our use- fulness to Winchester-Thurston will only be beginning. We who 'flongen to goone on pilgrimagesv will join a pilgrimage whose members are alumnae and whose goal is the perpetuation of the Winchester-Thurston family. And we will bigan with right a myrie cheere Our pilgrimage as Alumnae nexte yeare. For we, the Seniors, all rejoice to take our places in the ranks of the Alumnae, to share their fellowship, and to do our part in continuing their tradition of loyal devotion. S. S. 55 . Qu I ge., . T. v W 'T V .QV 7: ' 0 Q ,- We have chosen to use Ccolircy Chaucrr's Tin' lfunlvrbury Tales as the theme of the 1954 Tliistledowri because the pilgrims and the pilgrimage seem to parallel the whole plain and purpose of XYlIlf'l1C5lCT-TllUl'SiUll. Each pilgrim had his own characteristics and his own story. but without all the pilgrims and their stories. The Canterbury Tales could not have been complete, nor could Chaucer have created a literary masterpiece which is real and alive today. In Winchester-'l'hurston the pupils and the teachers are the pilgrims. liach has her own traits which make her interesting to travel with. The curriculum and the activities may he compared to the individual tales which add variety to the journey and help us to attain our objective: to become useful individuals. The stories tllat the teachers tcll are ol' Latin. French. lfnvlish. History. Science. and Mathematics- of homework and tests. Each class tells ol' dances and parties. We have stops along the way when we learn of nrt. music. and dramatif-s. Chapel and Northfield add a religious element to the journey. And when we are tired of listening to stories. we can exercise our bodies in gym. The hasie thought with which our pilfrrimaee is constantly traveling is. Think also of the comforts and the rights of others. Wlieri We have achieved this. we have reached one of the goals in our lives-the goal which Chaucer likened to the Canter- bury cathedral. Chaucer never finished his Canterbury Tales, he never awarded a prize to the best story because there was none. So it is with Winchester-Thurston. There cannot be any prize for the best part, for it is only within the whole that perfection can be achieved. S.
