GRAHAM MITCHELL Character is higher than intellect-a great soul will he strong to live, as well as to think. -EMERSON. FOREWORD Last spring, when our dreams of becoming Seniors were just beginning to material' ize, we were shattered by the loss of a person so much a part of us that we felt as insef cure as a house whose foundation had suddenly crumbled. We could not express our grief, and our sadness was heightened by the realization that our goldfedged dreams might fade into impossibility. But in the remaining days of that spring, we watched hopefully as a fine builder came to the aid of our toppled house and began to rebuild-using friendship as his conf erete, loyalty as his bricks, and understanding as his mortar. He used his own tools but relied upon us to supply him with his materials. We strove hard to provide him with his needs, and, as a result, with his strength and faith to support us, we were able to enter our Senior Year eagerly and with confidence. This year has been worth all the hard work we have put into it, and has failed us in only one respect-it hasn't been long enough. We have had too much fun, shared too many worries, played too much bridge and loved being together too much to accept the realization that, when we leave this school today, we, as a group, may never be able to laugh, work, or play together again. But our sharing so many things together has not been in vain: for, when we leave, we take with us not only the knowledge we have acquired, but also the courage to face and tackle the problems of our time, the hope to be able to find some day the best answer to our prayers, and enough of a ublithe spirit to enable us to see our way, even in the darkest moments. So that we may never forget a few of the wonderful things that made our year so full, we have compiled our book as a log of what we did, what we said, and how we held up under the strain of being examples of perfection. We are not too sure that we have been quite the models we should have been, nor are we confident that this book is as true a record as it might be, but we have had fun trying. We hope that as you turn the pages of our yearbook you will capture, as we have, a little of the spirit that is WinchesterfThurston. The Editor. saggy ? Her terrific hen party, the first of a long line of dateless Senior get' togethers, helped start the year off with a bang. You'd think I was running a taxi service, murmurs Nance, about 3 :45 everyday. It seems that at times we nearly get the best of her good nature, but that is almost impossible, for Nance is always cordial, always sweet, and always sincerely friendly. Then, after numerous threats from the teacher, We finally do settle down, And poor teacher heaves a sigh of relief, Followed by a worried frown. By this time, ye old faithful study hall clock Has moved round to twentyftoffour. All books are piled in a neat little stack, All eyes fastened on the door. Our mouths drop open, our eyes bulge wide, Why, she's not dismissing the Senior side! The underclassmen walk defiantly by, Each dear little head held triumphantly high. When finally we're given the goodfbye sign, We can't seem to leave in an orderly line, But charge the door with a mighty cheer, So went our days in Study Hall this year. E701 -M. L. All's well that ends well!! foo l THE CRYSTAL BALL REVEALS .... A deadly hush falls over a large, musty room, as forty-six frantic females of reputed wisdom fix their eyes on a mysterious crystal ball placed precariously on a table. An unfamiliar odor fills the room: it is not the highly perfumed incense of the Orient. as might be expected, but a bit of smog smuggled in from Altoona. The haze parts, and out of the keyhole floats the incomparable Madame Zephrina Katrinkibus. The swami, exhaling the helium from her lungs, alights at the head of the table. After taking her seat, she gazes into the magic globe and begins to delve into the realm of the unknown. The year is-ah!-1960! I see politics flying thickly and heavily from a white-domed building. Some forms are materializing. I see that Honest Nancy Queer is running on the Safe-Crackers' Ticket, and Unquestionable M. L. Hull is being supported by the Blackmailcrs' Union. There is a heated argument over thc possibility of a third presidential candidate. It seems that Irreproachable Annie Curran, who has the support of the B. J. Rayburn League For An Ultra- Perfect Black Market, can't decide which candidate to vote for, so she is running on a separate ticket. The only comment on this Third Party action is being made by J. Terman, Ambassador to Russia, who is helping stuff the ballot boxes for Annie. It is possible that Janet wants the presidency herself, however, and may stuff herself into the boxes. The scene is changing. I see Pittsburgh. Nancy Baird, winner of the 1959 All-American Sportswomanys Contest, is proving herself worthy of the title again this year. She is at the famous P.A.A QPittsburgh Anchorage Ass'n.j with two companions-Sue Best F. of the D. Birmingham, and the VVorld Champion Tiddledy VVinks Player. Jean Friedman. Neither of her friends is prepared to pay the bill, so our brave heroine has taken out her Never-sharp Drip and Leaker pen and is signing on the dotted line. VVhat a sportl My attention is being directed to New York. I sec that the famous fashion designer, Peggy Metz, is proving itis a woman's world by her recent publication of Dlcsquirc, a magazine read by the messes. Her associate, Mary Lou VVilliams. noted torch singer, has given up a successful career of modeling gymsuits at WLT. to appear in same on the cover of the March issue of Jlcsquirc. Dr. Dale Johns was asked to serve on the Zllcsquirz' Stall' but has replied that her duties as consulting advisor to the lovclorn are more important. The ball is clouding-I can't quite make out the images-Ah! Itis becom- ing clearer. I sec an art exhibit where the best paintings of the year are being shown. There is a tie for first prize between Mary Whigham's picture, Flying A Kite In A TcIz'phr111e Booih, and Joan Heppenstall's Pushing if T'Vh.ceII1ar1'fm' Through .fl Knot Ilolc. However, the judges, Nancy Feather and Kay Gerwig, have decided on a joint prize, and are giving a booby prize to Diane lNIcCracken for her pin sketch of The Grand Canyon. My thoughts are being interrupted by static coming from the local radio station. I see that Peggy Ridinger, a house-wife from Peoria, has won the famed Miss Alaneousu contest. Peg has correctly guessed that Miss Alaneous is, in reality, the noted naturalist, Patsy Diamond, author of Barefoot Boy Will: Shoes On. Peggy is receiving hundreds of prizes, among which is the Brooklyn Bridge, which the J. Dressler Construction Corp. will cheerfully move to Peoria free of charge. Edie Pennoyer of Turtlcsoup, Indiana. has won second prize in the contest, and is l91l receiving a hundred year's supply of WUZ, which is being offered by the sponsor of the program, Gloria Palmer, who says, 'Use WUZ, and what it was, it wonit be anymore 1' Some noise is breaking through the quiz program. I hear the famous news commentator, Machine-Gun Miller, shooting off some yokel news. 'Flash-Julie Foster is starting out on a three-day crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a barrel. Miss Foster, who crossed the Pacific last year in a milk bottle, is pleased with her more spacious accommodations this year. Joan Paul and Polly Bancroft have just received a patent on the back for their recent invention, a tractor with a jet-propelled egg-beater for making all housework easier. Mary Ely and Nancy Moore have just been selected by Panana-the toothpaste to end all teeth-as the 1960 models for their product. Misses Ely and Moore will appear on the covers of all editions of Rand-McNally Maps and National Geographics. Bonnie Solo- mon, who won the Pushitzer Prize last year for her inspiring novel- Manhattan Telephone Directory-Abridged''-has constructed a pair of collapsible glasses. They are ideal for people who never remember to remove their glasses from their pockets before sitting down. Joan Wlietzel has perfected a dynamo eraser especially for people who wear new shoes before returning them to the store. By using this eraser, the guilty persons are able to completely erase the soles of their shoes so that the clerks in the stores can never tell that they have been worn.' My attention is now being directed to VValla YValla, where I sec a beauty salon. It is Miss Sally Leaman's 'Haven For The Heavyf Pat Hyland, world famous weight lifter, is rescuing Sherry Joyce, who has accidentally been strapped to an exercycle for over twelve hours. Although Sherry's original weight is not known, there is little to speak of at present. My gaze is shifting to Hollywood, where the Academy Awards are being presented. The award for the best picture of the year is being given to the Bit 'Parrish The Thought' Productions for Suclalcnly It's Springy, or Life On A Chip- cndale Chair. Mary Cosgrove has been proclaimed the outstanding actress for her magnificent performance in His Feats FVa.s' Too Small. June Turner and Char- lotte Cohen are receiving awards as the best supporting actresses for their uplifting performance in carrying Mary Lou Moore in Carry N10 Ilome To Siberia, which was produced and directed by Betsy Jackman. Two ladies are now appearing on the stage. They are the famous exponents of the dance, Jackie Sloan and Dee Davis. Their performance is being interrupted by the Co-Chairman of the Anti- Antics Association-Virginia Jack and Nancy Stupakoif, who are insisting that the votes thus far have been miseounted. However, Wynne Henderson, Chairman of the Presentation Committee, asserts that since nobody bothered to count votes, as all awards were given to the highest bidders, their plea will be disregarded. The evening is being brought to a close by a rendition of 'Marching Along Together' by the well-known quartet of Eaton, Lippincott, and 'Disc-Jockey Davis and her Brin- dled Cat.' The spirits inform me that I must disclose nothing more at this time con- cerning the future. However, if anyone wishes more details about 1960, she can secure much information by sending in the first page of Webster's Dictionary and 20 cents in pillsf' Upon uttering these invigorating words, iviadtme Katrinkibus slowly rises and is passing out the keyhole, leaving behind 46 stupified girls. We leave their futures up to you. l92l l I E FAREWELL It seems only a few, short, happy days since we first entered Winchester. We came, wondering what surprises were in store for us and hoping that we would be favorably accepted by the faculty and the students. It wasn't long before we discovered that school is fun and that loyal friendships can be made. We learned in the days that followed-we learned many, many things. With Miss Mitchell and the teachers, we came to share their ideals-the ideals of the school. We began to understand more fully that character, courage, and loyalty go hand in hand with understanding. The years went by quickly, and suddenly, our Senior year arrived. With all the responsibility of our Senior year, has come the spirit which is an integral part of every WinchesterfThurston Senior, This Senior Spirit is the combination of the mischievous Freshman Spirit, the selffconfident Sophomore Spirit, and the conscientious junior Spirit. It is all of these and more. And in the wave of this Spirit comes the realization of how deeply we love our school and classmates. It is hard to leave our friends behind. However, it is good to know that they will devote themselves to those ideals that we have striven to uphold. It is hard to say goodbye, for our years at W.T. have been such happy ones. But it is good to know that always when we return, our school . . . the spirit that makes our school what it is . . . will be here to welcome us, the class of '48. N. J.
