.sk Foreword Dear Miss Mitchell, This is an open letter to you from the Senior Class. Perhaps it is the last time that we, as a class, shall be able to write to you. For yesterday, fifty more of us, the girls to whom you have dedicated your life, graduated from your school. In a few months these girls will be scattered over the United States, leaving behind with you and Win- chester a permanent part of their lives. It is rather dismaying to come suddenly face to face with the fact that we shall never again come together for play rehearsals and afternoon biology classes, that we shall never againfclatter noisily into study hall, or eat our lunches on the steps in the sun. It is more than dismaying to think that many of us may never meet again. Our future is built around the words perhaps and if. During the years that we have spent at Winchester, the world has seen hate and greed, has experienced death and ruin-and has learned tolerance and patience. At the same moment we laughed, children on the other side of the world were cryingg while we chattered worriedly about examinations, others gazed wordlessly on the piles of rubble that had been their homes. We could not help but mature more rapidly under such conditions. This maturity, how' ever swift, must bring us finally the courage, stability, and awareness that we shall need to make our places in the world of tomorrow. We have'the background for it-we are of good American stock, and have had the finest gift America can offer, a sound edu' cation. This is the greatest preparation we can make for our futures. It will be up to us, the coming generation, to make peaceful democracy a reality. It has been promised to usg it is our duty to fulfill the promise. Each one of us has been put on earth for a purpose. Indeed, it can be regarded as a privilege and a com' pliment to our intelligence that God has seen fit to give us such a task. Now let us be equal to it. We are young girls no longer, we are expected to meet the world as women. We can only express again our deepest and sincerest appreciation for the devotion with which you have helped to guide our way towards this goal. It is now our turn to prove ourselves to show you that your love for us and for your school has not been in vain. THE SENIORS. l 4 J
