During this period she has taught speech, Freshman English, Freshmen Core, Summer School, Yearbook, and also taught 7th grade English. Some who don't get to know Miss Pratt can be objective about her, but some of us who know her more than others or get along with her better could say she's smart, witty, and has an outstanding sense of humor. In her spare time she likes to be with her son, Anthony, which by the way is her cat. She also likes to read, along with sewing and swimming. The 1986-87 Yearbook staff would like to dedicate this year's yearbook to her. We very much appreciate all of the support and help she has provided. HOMECOMING Homecoming was great, and loads of fun, all had a good time from the starting gun. The bonfire burned as long as it could, the problem you see, there was no wood! The bonfire's message was crystal clear, for heavens sake, use the wood next year. Though disappointingly short, it did burn bright, and set the stage for a fun filled night. The cheerleaders gathered to lead the crowd, and jump and cheer and yell out loud. The student body did their best, but alas, the Wildcats were laid to rest. Try as they did, the team was shelved, they lost the game six to twelve. But let not your spirits be dimmed by those facts. This land is ruled by Winchester Wildcats! Pass the word to all who come, in our eyes they're number one. Student-faculty games were a hardy test, those who competed did their best. Wheel barrel races, and tug of war, balloon and egg toss made the score. When the games were over, and winners declared some raw egg was found in Luanne's hair. The weather held through the parade that day, and for the game that night. But in between the roof caved in and the rain was a terrible sight. The floats appeared to please the crowd, the judges eyes they passed. The record shows the blue ribbon choice was the junior class. Halftime arrived and on the field, the flags and drums appeared, and with them came the entire band, the crowd stood and cheered! They played and danced and thrilled the crowd while Steven led the band. And in the distance someone said, ''Play it again Sam The parade is gone, the sun is down, the game is history. The night was such a happy time, the sky lit by the moon. And when the final choice was made, our queen was Katy Coon. Looking back in retrospect, and given our best picks, all will say that we enjoyed Homecoming '86. This year's Senior lettermen were Henry Likes, Chuck Brown, Brad Slagle, Ben Berry, Adam Wilson, and Rod Dolen. Junior lettermen were Brett Lashmett, Shanon Brickey, Joey Petry, Kelly Gregory, and Denny Savage. There was also help from the Sophomore class this year on the varsity football squad. Sophomore lettermen were Matt Clayton, Eli Stephenson, Jamie Hester, and David Herring. Awards that went to players this year were All-conference, Henry Likes and Chuck Brown; Most Valuable Player went to Henry Likes; Best Defensive Player went to Chuck Brown; Most Improved Player for varsity was Rod Dolen and for junior varsity was Matt Clayton. A new award this year was the Hitman Award and this went to Shanon Brickey. Even though the team didn't have a winning season this year, they are proud of their improvement and have high hopes for a good season next year. 1. Please don't make us practice anymore. 2. VOLLEYBALlJ The 1986 Volleyball season wasn't much of a success. But we tried hard and had some close matches and lost a few that we seemed to give away. With a new coach, it took awhile to get to know her but once we did we got along great! I think, once getting to know who worked well together and who should be next to whom was figured out, we started improving. If we were given a little more regular season time, we might have come out of the regional a little better. I wonder how many souveniers were brought home from different towns, and if the Barefoot Bar will let a bunch of bossy Volleyball girls from WHS back in it's doors? The 1986-87 Varsity Wildcats ended the season with a disappointing 53-50 loss to Pittsfield in the Regional Championship game. The Cats, however, finished the season with a very respectable 14-14 record. Due largely to injuries and inexperience we got off to a very slow start at 1-6. From that point on, however, we turned it around winning 13 of our last 20 games. Our Cats played hard but just couldn't seem to win the close games. We lost 8 games by 5 points or less. The Cats will lose the service of Seniors Henry Likes and Jeff Day, but will have 6 lettermen returning for the 87-88 season. Starters Jayson Brockhouse, Jimmy Evans, Todd Gregory, and Brett Lashmett will be back so the outlook is bright for next year. The team voted Jimmy Evans as the MVP, Jeff Day as the Most Improved, and Henry Likes as the Best Defensive Player. Manager Chuck Frost won the Wildcat Award. Evans also made the WIVC All-Conference team as well as the Chicago Sun-Times Class A All-State team. We had some disappointing games but the bus rides home were always fun. Highlights of the year were — Crystal's 2 no-hitters, 1 shut-out, 3 double plays, and dumping water on Mr. Moore. Something we didn't accomplish was the race between Kim Mr. Moore and to win the Conference Regionals. But we had fun with the Bobster although he didn't know we called him that. The summer was extremely busy. They started out with a third place trophy overall from the USCA Cheerleading Camp and a Senior member of the squad also received an individual award at camp. After camp, they participated at the Illinois State Fair Cheerleading Competition and gave a flawless performance. Too bad the judges didn't see it our way! They must have been blind. Also, for the first time this summer, the Varsity Cheerleaders held a cheerleading clinic for the 5th thru 8th graders. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learned a few things in the process. Again, the spirit displayed was astounding from the students and the fans. The cheerleaders and I would like to thank those people and fans that did attend the games and yelled. We appreciate your support. As always there were good times and then there were those times when you'd rather forget. Some of the times we will remember are: winning the Winchester Invitational Tournament Cheerleading Trophy, attending the dance reviews (both at home and the one at Jacksonville High School), practices (most of them ???), winning ball games, the inside jokes that cheerleaders have (right Cheech and Chong?), the bus rides to and from the games with the entertainment committee (Yes, we mean Henry, Jimmy, Brett L., and Jayson), the slumber parties and especially all the question and answer periods. It was a very good year. To the Cheerleaders, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!! You all have a special quality inside you. Let it show! 1 am very proud of you and thank you for all your help and cooperation. You have worked extremely hard and it shows! I don't care what anyone else says or thinks, I think that you are the best in my book and always will be. I love you all. Miss Malmstedt Lisa Stice, Laura Evans, Jamie Petry, Lynn Robinson, Debra Grady, Aimee Sipes The Pom Pon squad has been very busy this year. Their routines included, Walk Like An Egyptian , Baby I'm A Star , Whip It , Wham Rap , Conga , Playing With The Boys , Friday Night , Living On Video , and Stand Up . We won a 2nd place trophy in the Prop category with the routine Hip To Be Square . The highlight of the year was beating the J'Ettes with Hip To Be Square . MERL DUNHAM In May of 1970, Merl Dunham graduated from Win-Co-High. He got his teaching degree from Illinois College and began his teaching career at Bluffs. He then went to Carrollton, and after Mr. Pfeiffer left, he came back to Winchester to teach the students mathematics for six years. During that time, students have learned that they could always run up to Mr. Dunham's room before school, and he would patiently help us out with our problems. He is now leaving the halls of Win-Co-High to teach computers at MacMurray College. The students are sad to see him go but still wish him the best of luck. 1 would like to add these wonderful sayings that he has said to his many classes in closing, Gee I'm a Tree and I know it's Friday . Our Freshman year we were scared to walk through the big hallgof WiiuCo-High. The first Homecoming, we took 4th place with our float and Katie Coon was our attendant. Then we went on to our Sophomore year. Glad that we made it through'our Freshman yearalive. We gotEnd place with our Homecoming float. Our attendant was Angie Hatch B Then, YES we made it upper classman at last. This was the year of tjie big magazin’sales which went a little slow at first, but in the end we topped our goal to give the Seniors a really nice Prom. Once again Homecoming was here, and with our 1st bonfire, (our big experience collecting wood — not cardboard boxes.) Then before we knew it our last Prom Banquet rolled around. The 1987 CourUconsisted of Katie Cdon, Jamie Cowper, Sarah Fedder, Jeff Quigg, Angie Hatcher, Brad Slagle, Lara Johnson, and Chuck Brown, he Queen Kathy Hembrough and King Adam Wilson reigned over Prom night which was set to the theme of Never Say Goodbye.” f ___________________ The last big gathering of all the Seniors was Graduation. As the tears felli 'e realized our 12 yrs. together were over, it wouldn't ever be the same again. Now all we have are the memorieiand we will cherish them forever. nigh llLe T 1 N, ■■l Michelle Clayton A WILDCAT STAFF Michelle Clayton, Tina Landess, Stacey Lawrence, Bobbi Gauges, Lynn Robinson, Michelle Berhardt, Lisa Stice, Rachel Sipes, Laura Evans, Stevie Renner, Kathy Schar-wark The 1986-87 Yearbook Staff for this year was, for the most part, wild! Slowly, but surely, we got our assigned pages done. Most days we usually sat around doing nothing until Miss Pratt got mad and started telling us what pages needed to be done. So we would stop the gossiping and get to work on our pages. The most aggravating thing was when you thought you had completed a page and Mr. Kauffman, the sales representative from Jos-tens, came to look over your pages and told you to start over again. 85 EDITORS' PAGE As this year's editors of the Wildcat, we sincerely hope you enjoy this year's yearbook. All of the staff put in a great deal of hard work to help you remember the special moments of your high school years. This year we got some extra help from the photography class. They really took a great deal of the work off of our shoulders, and we would like to thank them. It takes a lot of work to turn out your yearbook. First the staff has to decide on the cover, end pages, and theme. Then they have to start making some money by selling ads, yearbooks, pizza and other really fun things. The staff also has to crop pictures, make 3-R's and type copy sheets. We would never be able to make the yearbook without the help of Miss Pratt — our advisor, Merele Fox, and the Times office, plus all of the volunteer help from Miss Malmstedt and Miss Jud.
