β€œThey tell me I often go out on a limb. Well, that's where I like to be. β€” Henry J. Kaiser We, the Senior class of 1986, respectfully dedicate to Mrs. Marcella Lashmett, the 1985-1986 WILDCAT, which we are proud to present in her honor. She's a real classy lady! She's one person you can always count on for everything β€” honesty, openness, sincere advice, and she always has a smile for everyone. Without her we never would have had such a successful Prom and Banquet. If you ever happen to be at the White Oaks Mall, you're bound to see her at Famous Barr or at Osco's talking to the soda machine while getting herself a Coca-Cola! If she's not there, she's probably riding on motorcycles with her husband on their farm. We've enjoyed having you as a teacher, Mrs. Lashmett, and most of all we've enjoyed you as a friend. This is our way of saying we appreciate all that you have done for us and we'll miss you! Thank you for being you!! The floats were lined up by the school with care; In hopes that the judges soon would be there. The students were huddled uptown on the square; The sweet smell of victory hung in the air. Jamie in his suit and Molly in her gown, awaited the moment that they would be crowned. When out of the distance arose such a din. We knew in a moment that the parade would begin. Away to the pep ralley we flew like a flash; Only to hear Janice say, Seniors got last. Mr. Stephenson's chest stole the show; Along with Jolly Jackie, who danced heel to toe. Then what to our wondering eyes should appear, But a stool on a wagon, donated by Greer. With the megaphone in hand and ready to scream, Miss Malmstedt yelled out, let's go team! More rapid than Bulldogs, the Cats they came; And the Coach whistled and shouted and called them by name: Now Jamie, now Chris, now Jeff and Matt, On Kirk, on Mitch, on Blanford and Smith, To the end of the field, but don't fall down. Now pass, now run, and make a touchdown. The gym was transformed, just for the night; The band β€” Front Page News β€” was just alright. And then in a twinkle we heard the last song; Dance this last dance, then Homecoming will be gone. We ran to our cars, to our friends gave a wave, These moments we've shared, will always be saved. I heard someone exclaim, as we drove out of sight, Happy Homecoming to all, and to all a Good Night. The Yearbook Staff 1. The Freshman Float 2. The sports page records peoples' accomplishments, the front page nothing but man's failures. FOOTBALL There were some memorable times in football this year. When it rained during practice, the freshmen really enjoyed sliding in the mud, a few of them had to be encouraged to do so. Also the gauntlet was fun when the freshmen had to go up against the upperclassmen and Mr. Stephenson going through the gauntlet without any pads, knocking a few upperclassmen down. The belly sokdes were a killer, but fun. We had high goals this season, but couldn't meet them due to injuries and the lack of experienced players. If the guys work hard on the new weights they ought to have a real good team next year. Good luck to next year's team! Jamie Killday 1. Asst. Coach Brad Stephenson Asst. BEING A CHAMPION MEANS PROVING YOU ARE CHAMPION WHENEVER PROOF SEEMS REQUIRED. β€” WOOD VOLLEYBALL I can't subscribe to that old cliche' that it is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. In that case, why keep score? β€” Dell Win-Co-High volleyball teams each had a winning record in their 1985 season. The varsity record was 13 wins and 8 losses. The Jr. Varsity record ended with 11 wins and 10 losses. Winchester placed second in the Conference Tournament which was held here. The Wildcats came in third in the Overall Conference. We had high hopes since this was basically the same JV team that went undefeated in 1983-84. Two major highlights were when we put it all together to beat Beard-stown and North Greene. We had a lot of fun times in the course of this season, too. Michelle's sling shots , the snowball fight after the game at Beardstown. (Kent, who taught us how to throw a snowball?). Our interesting discussions around the table at the Oasis, when Mr. Moore coached (the bench was silent!). Where did all those technicals come from? Sharon could find out anything we wanted to know. The 1985-86 Varsity Wildcats recorded the best record in the history of Winchester High School finished the season at 29-3. The Wildcats recorded many lsts this season. Most wins ever β€” 29, breaking the old record of 26; 1st Sectional win ever, which put the Cats in the Sweet 16 for the 1st time. Somewhat overlooked was the fact that the Cats won the Havana Holiday Tournament for the 2nd successive year and were WIVC Champions for the 2nd year in a row. The Cats also captured 2nd place honors in the Winchester Invitational Tournament. With 3 lettermen returning from last year's 22-4 team we expected to be strong again this year. Who would have thought before the season, however, that the season would have turned out as it did? Our Seniors got some great help from our underclassmen and we gradually put it all together. We had some talent but the big key to our success was our outstanding team play. Our guys were very unselfish, got along well together, and played hard all season. We were A TEAM . We ll lose three Seniors next year and they'll be tough to replace. Mark Cox was our leading scorer and rebounder for three straight years and also shattered the school career scoring record with 1,763 points. Ken Day was a two year starter and our 2nd leading scorer and rebounder. Joe Little was one of our unsung heroes who made lots of contributions and didn't get much credit. (Remember the 6 free throws in the last minute of the Regional Championship)? The team voted Mark Cox as the MVP, Ken Day as the Most Improved, and Henry Likes as the Best Defensive Player. Joe Little won the Wildcat Award, and Mark won both Free Throw and Wildcat Star Awards. Mark, Ken, and Jimmy Evans all made the WIVC All-Conference Team. Our team, school, and community will probably never forget the accomplishments of these Wildcats. Our two weeks of March Madness were very special and exciting. We ll never foget the thrilling victories at Pittsfield, Porta, and Macomb. The trip to the Assembly Hall in Champaign topped off the whole season. We would like to thank all of our fans for their great support. We've had a lot of fun this season and hope we provided some excitement for you. COACH MOORE 44 Back row: Coach Stevenson, Bill, Roger, Shawn, Scott, Shannon, Chris, Mark, Shane, Todd, Mike, and Mikie. Kneeling: Greg, Jeff, Mark, Marcus, Jamie, Shanon, Jeff, Mark, Ken, Jim, and Tim. Seniors: Jeff, Marcus, Jamie, Mark, Ken, and Jim. Our 1986 baseball season began in March with practice and then tryouts. We had over 30 boys go out. The first game was held on Monday, March 31 against Alton Marquette. We lost our first two games but by our third game things were beginning to look up. We had a new coach this year, Mr. Terry Stevenson. We would like to take this time to thank Mr. Stevenson for his time, support, and effort in coaching us. Bill White WILDCAT SOFTBALL The Wildcat Softball girls ended our season with a record of 12-12. We achieved a WIVC record of 4-4. Three of our players received All-Conference. They were Kathie Killday, Crystal Greer, and Jennifer Cherry. We were 1-3 in the Beardstown Tourney and again had the same three players named All-Tournament. Our leading hitter was Crystal Greer. Tana Hurrelbrink was the leading Home Run hitter with 6 this season. Award winners were as follows: Most Valuable Player β€” Crystal Greer Most Improved Player β€” Melissa White Wildcat Award β€” Melissa Weder Leading Hitter β€” Crystal Greer Good Luck next year Cats! Melissa Weder GIRLS TRACK Back row: Mr. Roth, Berta Cockerill, Janice Brown, Bobbi Williams, Katy Lashett, Tabitha Jones. Kneeling: Dianne Grady, Amanda Fairfield, Molly Coon, Katie Cunningham, Tammy Teaney. The 1986 Girls' Track Team had an interesting season. This year we had an unusual number of freshmen that decided to stay with it the whole season. Along with new seasons β€” come new experiences . . . Tabitha's hurdles . . . Sam's two mile . . . Katy and Bobbi Sabotaging Mr. Roth's truck . . . Bobbi Jo's . . . Sam's ability to pick up guys at State. There was a lot of hard work, shown by all of the records broken by Sam in the mile, the two mile relay (Sam, Bobbi Jo, Janice, and Bobbi) and Bobbi with the 800 and 400 meters. In conclusion, the track team would like to thank Mr. Roth and Mr. Dunham for their patience and dedication during the season. 48 B O Y S The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. β€” R.W. The 1985-86 Boys' Track Team had a β€œsort of good year. At least this year we didn't get last at the larger meets. We owe most of our achievements to Coach Smith for his devotion and divided attention through the good and bad times. Emerson CHEERLEADERS Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusi- The cheerleaders started out the year with trying to raise school spirits for the football team. Homecoming was here before we could say Go, Cats. Go”. Bonfire was reinstated and new activities were created. The Tug-of-War was started and a good time was had by all. The Homecoming pep assembly featured such celebrities as Miss Jolly Jackie, our very own exotic dancer, and the appearance of Win-Co-Hi's finest cheerleaders (Mr. Moore Mr. Stephenson). After that it was only a matter of time till the end of the season. Practice for the dance review began. The Varsity did a routine to Gambler by Madonna. The J.V. performed a routine to Change by John Waite. The cheerleaders and the Pom Pon Squad combined to do a joint routine to Big Brass Machine. It was a very enjoyable and profitable evening for all. Basketball season arrived and practice, practice, and more practice was our motto. The cheerleaders put their hearts into the work. The season was great, beginning with the trophy at 52 Havanna and the Cats just kept believing and achieving. Winchester Tournament arrived and left leaving record breaking crowds as memories. Regionals arrived and as we beat each team, the enthusiasm peaked. One of the most exciting times was the night we beat Pittsfield. The crowd was wild. The journey continued to Petersburg and another trophy was won. More excitement, more support, and one step closer to Champaign. Macomb was the site of the Super-sectionals and once again the REAL Wildcats prevailed. The trip to Champaign was awesome to say the least. It was great to be at the Assembly Hall and look up into a sea of purple and gold. The weekend stay was even more fun. The activities varied. There were pillow fights, water gun fights, phone calls, pool dunkings, late night talks, ice cream raids, group pictures, and pictures of the T.V. (thanks Henry!) This year the cheerleaders and I have had alot of fun and worked hard. I'm extremely proud of these girls and have had a most enjoyable year. Thanks to everyone who had a part in making this a great year. First we kept our audiences On the Edge of a Blade at the State Fair. We went to camp at JHS where we had a Dangerous time Shout ing and Sweat ing. Each squad member's efforts was rewarded with Blue Ribbons. At the Pep-Rally we taught everyone to Be True to Your School by performing a hand routine choreographed by Melissa, Bobbi, and Kathy. At the basketball games the fans chanted we want a victory , we replied with Do You Really? during halftime. We received a 1st place trophy when we performed Workin on the Highway at U-High in Normal. We also received 4th place at Altoff High in Belleville. At Potpourri we proved that everywhere we go Kids Wanna Rock! There were several sayings we picked up throughout the year that probably won't make sense to anyone but us, but here they are so we won't forget: Look at my eye! , Are we having fun yet? (Sarah), I don't understand (you can say that again), Left, back, right, front (Will we ever get it?), It's been a fun year and good luck to you all next year. Between band, baseball, softball, and track practices. Miss Jud has managed to produce an enjoyable school play. Mirth and Mayhem was a fast moving comedy about a group of high school students who spend the night in a haunted house on a dare. Unbeknown to them, there are jewel thiefs and strange characters everywhere. Everything finally works out in spite of all the mistaken identities, attempted murders, and strange things happening at every turn. After the performances, the cast and crews were ready for a celebration. The cast party was held at Chuck Frost's house (Thank you. Chuck) until the wee hours of the morning. After munchies and movies, everyone realized that the show was finally over. 1. Come on Kirk, how about a smile? 2. I knew I should have used Grecian Formula 44! 3. Al Capone never had it this good! 4. Is that you Chuck? 5. Are you sure Miss Jud won't look in here? 6. Where's the rest of the turkey? 7. My brain slowly fizzes to particles. I don't know what she wants from me. Sometimes that woman is hard to please. Kathy Summers is our Editor in Chief. She gives us assignments you wouldn't believe. But she's so nice and writes real fine. But you better make sure the articles in on time. Shannon Aossey is a very good writer. When it comes to editorials she's a real fighter. Molly and Lara are our layout girls. They are the best in all the world. Kathie and Terri are our typing queens. But they're always gone and are seldom seen. Kirk, Beth, Amy, and Kent are the rest of the staff. They are always good for at least a million laughs. Yeah, we're a good team and there ain't any better. We may even take the place of Elmer Fedder 68 Chris Scharwark SCHOLASTIC BOWL What does Mrs. Bradshaw's shirt say? BB! Certainly that was one thing the 1985-86 Scholastic Bowl Team accomplished. We won the 1985 WIVC Conference Title by scoring the high total of 788 points and came in second in the Scholastic Bowl Tournament, losing only to Greenfield. Scholastic Bowl was not only a question and answer sport, but also a debate team. At practices, the team debated over whether it (being anything) Tastes great! or is Less filling! Also, along with correctly answering the questions comes a time limit in which a contestant must answer them, which means the dreaded STOPWATCH! Don't ever touch the middle button! The celebrations after winning were a blast! Dairy Queen just loves the Win-Co High Scholastic Bowl Team! Also, watch Jeff Day eat! The team ended up with a 7 wins β€” 1 loss record and the WIVC Scholastic Bowl Title. All in all it was a super year. We truly hope that our staff has been successful in doing this. We are extremely proud to say that we completed this book on our own for the first time in the history of the WILDCAT. For those of you who do not realize how much work goes into creating a yearbook, we will give you a brief idea. First of all, we decide on a theme, cover and colors that we will be working with. Next we get busy on money-making ideas. These include selling ads and yearbooks. In addition to these, the staff sold memo pads, popcorn and candy at the Homecoming movies, WILDCAT T-shirts, pizzas, we had a bake sale and we also worked at the Volleyball Tournament. During this time we are also busy meeting deadlines by assigning pages, looking up quotes, taking pictures making layouts and 3-R's, and typing up copysheets. We would never have been able to make this yearbook a success without the dedication of a wonderful staff and the help of our advisor Miss Pratt, Merle Fox, the Times Office and last but not least the hours of volunteer work from Miss Malmstedt and Miss Jud. We hope that you enjoy our book and that it provides many happy memories for you. 79 Purple and Gold Week was a huge success this year. The individual dress-up days included: Punk-Rock Ribbon Day, Inside-Out Pin Day, Slob Day, and Purple Gold Hat Day. The award for best costume, most ribbons, and most pins, was $5 each. Winners included: Sheila Cox (Pins β€” 7); Mark Cox, Jamie Cowper, and Eli Stevenson (each with 32 Ribbons); Kathy Hembrough and Steve Shu-penus (Punk-Rock); Angie Hatcher and Jamie Cowper (Tourist Day); Jason Howard, Angie Heather, and Jack Jones (Slobs); Frank Pitman and Lisa Fearneyhough. 80 BANQUET PROM Prom was held at MacMurray College this year. SENIOR HISTORY Today at Winchester High School the Senior class heard the school bell ring for the last time. It was only four short years ago that we were a bunch of dumb Freshmen waiting for that first bell to ring. A whole lot has happened between those bells. Our first day of high school, we were a bit nervous; we didn't quite know what to expect. Everyone told us not to get lost, to stay out of the Seniors' way, and to enjoy high school because these are the best years of our lives. We did enjoy our Freshman year β€” once we figured out how not to get lost and how to stay out of the Seniors' way. Soon it was time for Homecoming. Following tradition, we decorated the football field and began on our first class project β€” the Homecoming float. So we voted on a theme, found a place to work, and spent a week building and decorating. What a float it was! Even though we got fourth place that year, we didn't feel too bad. At least we had three more years to do better. And it didn't look that bad β€” whatever it was! Things just got better, we enjoyed the parade, the bonfire, a good football game, and our first high school dance. The rest of the year went by in a flash. We ordered our class rings, survived our first final exams, and dreamed of summer vacation. Then a bell rang, and it was time to say goodbye to the Class of '83. We were no longer Freshmen. There was a lot to look forward to our Sophomore year. The main thing was: we wouldn't be Freshmen any more. We got our first yearbooks, our class rings and best of all, our driver's licenses. Look out! We also had our first wrecks, and our first speeding tickets. Nonetheless, it was a really good year. When Homecoming rolled around, we began on our second float. Again, we spent hours planning, constructing, and decorating. This year it really paid off because we moved up a notch and took third place. If we kept up at this rate, by the time we were Seniors, we would get first place! More finals, more dreams of summer vacation, a bell range, and we said goodbye to the Class of '84. Suddenly we were upperclassmen! Our Junior year, like every class before us, started off with magazine sales. I don't think there's anyone in Winchester who doesn't have a subscription. At least not after our year because we went $500 over our goal. We really looked forward to building our float that year. Since we got fourth place our Freshman year, and third place our Sophomore year, then we should get second place this year. We would like to point out that our Wildcat was not black; he was wearing a tuxedo!! But the judges must not have been into formal wear; they gave us another fourth. Oh well, we could keep our hopes up for next year. The other highlight of our Junior year was the Prom. We spent weeks picking out the invitations and assembling the decorations. The afternoon of the Prom, we began the task of changing the gym into a beautiful city skyline. Needless to say, we had our work cut out for us. But we did it, and Janice survived her trip across the gym floor on top of the scaffolding while she put up the crepe paper ceiling, and we all got home in plenty of time to get cleaned up for the big event. It was our last school dance with our friends in the Class of '85. Just a few weeks later, the bell rang again and we said goodbye to them at their commencement. Our final year of high school came too soon. We hoped to enjoy our Senior year; to goof off a little more often and to achieve a little more. Our first assignment this year, again, was to make another Homecoming float. We knew it had to be really good because everyone expected us to win, we'd had three years of experience, and as Seniors, we were expected to set the standard. And this year, (once, again) we accepted fourth place with pride. Though we re not expert float builders, we, as Seniors excelled in many other areas. For the first time in years. The Marching Wildcats won first place in their class at State Competition. Of course, our biggest win occurred when Mark, Ken, and Joe, our Senior tri-captains, led our basketball team all the way to the Assembly Hall in Champaign and Elite Eight! During the rest of the year, we were kept very busy. Our next assignment as Seniors was to achieve all we could. Back at the beginning of the year we were told that we had to set the standard of behavior for our school, and we've always tried to do our best. As our Senior year drew to a close with Prom and banquet, we gathered many memories of the special times we had at ol' Win-Co-Hi. Our voices whispering in classes, and cheering at pep rallies, our footsteps in the halls, and the bell we used to hear will only be echoes now. As we become graduates of Winchester High School, we are very proud. To our parents, our teachers, and our fellow classmates, we give our thanks. Because for four years in between the bells, they have been there behind us as we studied, partied, worked, learned, grew, and made things happen.
