The year started off with the annual magazine sales (which we know are loved by all our community). With the help of our class sponsors we exceeded our goal of $11,000. Our Homecoming float was criticized again this year! Our wildcat was not black; he was wearing a tuxedo! Even though we were humiliated, we accepted our fourth place float with pride. After putting forth much time and effort we succeeded in putting on a wonderful prom and banquet. So, as we bring an end to the school year, we can see that the junior class has continued their legacy of being the class with class. 20 Shari Young 1. Janice, Karen, and Melissa — Hi, guys! 2. Although some of us couldn't make it up and down the stairs in the beginning. We even learned a few things in physical science due to all the extensive research we did (but not by choice!!). We got 3rd place on our homecoming float, and Jennifer Cherry was our queen attendant. Even though we were freshmen we had many great times we will always remember. Amy Pfeiffer and Crystal Greer 29 The teachers were busy doing all the things as normal this year. This year we had a few minor changes in our staff. This included a new principal and a new superintendent. We also had to get used to the smell of smoke bombs, new rules, and a whole lot of suspensions. All in all teachers and students alike had a pretty good year. STAR SEARCH Below: Ed Staples Beth Brown (Most Athletic) O O o FOOTBALL Win-Co-Hi started the football season in August. The Wildcats began with two new coaches, ready to take on their opponents. Win-Co-Hi started off in good fashion as their record stood at 2-1. Winchester then lost four in a row to drop to 2-5, before splitting the final two games to make their season record 3-6. The Wildcat jayvees did not fair any better, however, the jayvees ended their season 1-5, getting shutout in four of their losses. The Wildcat freshman ended their season 1-4. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL The volleyball season started off with practice on August 14: we did our daily drills of bumping, setting, spiking and the wonderful diving drills on the mats. We also ran several laps, we were told it would build our endurance up. (We never thought it did!) The team had several tough games during our season but the one that will stand out in our minds the most is the game against Routt. The varsity went to watch ISU play against Southern Illinois Carbondale. We also went to watch the State playoffs in Springfield. Then the banquet came and congratulations to the following varsity players: Joni Lawless, Most Valuable Player; Mary Brown, Most Improved; Janice Brown, Best Offensive Player; Kathie Killday, Wildcat Award; and Bobbi Williams, Best Defensive Player. Also, congratulations to the following JV players: Katie Coon, Best Defensive Player and Offensive Player; Crystal Greer, Wildcat Award; and Katy Lashmett, Most Improved. We ended the year with the JV record of 10-8 and the varsity record of 8-11. A special thanks to Coach Hilliard for a job well done! Thanks! The 1984-85 Varsity Wildcats surprised almost everyone as they compiled an outstanding 22-4 record. The 22 wins were the most by a Winchester team in the last seven years. Although having some talented players, probably the big key to the Cats success was their unselfishness and outstanding team play. We were 'A TEAM . The Cats jumped off to a 3-0 start this year and when we beat arch-rival Pittsfield in a 63-59 thriller to go 4-0, people started believing. Our guys went on to capture the Havana Holiday Tournament for the first time ever and shared the WIVC title with Routt with a 4-1 record. Despite all the success, there were come disappointments. Who will ever forget the heartbreaking 81-79 overtime loss to Routt in THE GAME or the 65-64 loss to Brussels that knocked us out of our own tournament? The Cats will lose four Seniors. We'll miss the leadership and playmaking abilities (268 assists) of Ed Staples, the outstanding shooting and scoring (20.4 pts. per game) of Tony Cox, the hustle and defensive work of Mic Savage and the hard work and team play of Doug Savage. The emphasis on team play was once again brought out by the team as they voted three plays; Tony, Ed, and Mark Cox as MVP's. Mic won the Hustler Award and Doug the Wildcat Award. Ken Day was the Most Improved and Mark also won the Wildcat Star Ward and Free Throw Award. Tony and Mark made the WIVC All-Conference Team. Memories of this season will be with all of us for a long time. This Team's accomplishments will be hard to top, but with some hard work by our younger players in the off-season, this year's success could continue. Our JV team was 10-8 and our Freshmen team had a record of 8-0, so things look bright the next few years. The '84-'85 team would like to thank everyone for their support this year. Four of the eleven losses were by one run. The 1986 team should show a lot of talent with 7 lettermen returning after losing five senior lettermen; Chris Pfeiffer, Michelle Hurrelbrink, Carol McLaughlin, Pat Kilver, and Jamie Lawless; through graduation. Some of the memorable things that the 1985 team will always remember are: The bus not starting at Hardees . . Michelle's first homerun . . . Chris' splits at first base ... The mouthy pitcher and Mr. Wrong . Calhoun's catcher's broken thumb (How did that happen?) . . . Beth's broken arm in the first week of practice .. . The cookout at Mr. Moore's house and Days of Our Lives .. . Brett's visits to practice .. . and Carol and Keith. Best of Luck to the 1986 Team! DIFF'RENT STROKES CHEERLEADERS The summer went quickly. The Varsity Cheerleaders went on a road tour to Western Illinois University at Macomb. They won many oscars for their outstanding performances at camp. Arriving home just in time to perform at the Illinois State Fair Competition. Competition was tough but they received an Honorable Mention. Football season arrived and activities flourished. Homecoming Pep Assembly with dance routines, skits including Magic Mountain, and cheers filled our afternoon. All too soon, football season ended and the 3rd Annual Cheerleader Pom Pon Dance Revue arrived. Many squads made for exquisite evening entertainment. Basketball season bounced in quickly. Pep Assemblies and games led to the ever famous 63rd Winchester Invitational Tournament. After rough competition, the Winchester cheerleaders emerged with the Cheerleading Trophy. The rest of the season went quickly. We attended the Jacksonville Pom Pon Dance Revue. The JV and Varsity joined to do a routine to Crime Pays I can't Drive 55, choreographed by Gay Lynne Brockhouse. All in all, it's been a fun year. So look for us next year. In between we performed at basketball games (Jump) and especially at Winchester Tournament (Head Over Heels). Our camp activities included summer camp (We're Not Gonna Take It) and one day clinic (Freak Show). It was a fun year filled with fitting new skirts and vests, selling candy and spices and making up new routines. Si This year the Choir was small as usual, but still had some strong voices. We sang for the Christmas concert, Potpourri, the Spring concert, and the WIVC Choir Festival held at Carrolton. This year four seniors won the WIVC Award. They were: Susie Jefferson, Kendra West, Carrie Koyne and Jamie Lawerence. Kendra West The W.H.S. Concert Band participated in several concerts and festivals this school year. Among them include the WIVC Festival at Triopia, the District Festival with the grade school, and the IHSA Contest at Raymond, Illinois. Among the annual performances were the Christmas concert and Spring concert and a Student Recital was also given. The band concluded the year by playing at the Commencement Exercises. Three days of learning music and memorizing marching formations as well as having fun. From there, a successful season of parades, field shows, and five half-time shows got underway. We participated in two parades: the Pittsfield Parade, receiving second place, and the Illinois College Parade, being the honorary band. As for Field shows, we participated in three: the West Central Illinois Field Show Competition at Brown County receiving second place, W1U Field Show Competition receiving a first place rating in Class A as well as Best Drum Major and finally the Illinois State Field Show Competition receiving fourth place. FRENCH AND SPEECH CLUB The speech club had a successful year as a team and as individuals due to practice and patience. The team received 2nd place at the Pittsfield Regional. Chris Hubbert received 6th at the Pekin Sectional. Tina White, verse reader; Doug Bell, radio announcer; and Tina McMillan, special occasion speaker, were newcomers. One of their most common lines was I'm so nervous! Kathy Summers, oratorical declamation speaker, and Toni Millik, dramatic duet actress were the greeters of the club. They made sure that no good-looking male was left unescorted in the halls of Pittsfield High. Their favorite line was Where did the guys from Liberty go? Mary Brown, the humorous interpretation actress, and Shannon Aossey, prose reader and duet actress, were the veterans of the group. Mary was heard saying I have to compete against the guy from Quincy? While Shannon was saying My voice doesn't go any lower! The prompter. Carman Ranft's favorite line was Don't worry, you did great! The original oratory speaker, Chris Hubbert's favorite line was I can't believe I made it! Our fearless leader, Mrs. Harr's famous line was I was a waitress in college. The officers were Mary Brown, President; Chris Hubbert, Vice President; Carol Jean McLaughlin, Secretary; and Ed Shupenus, Treasurer. Biology Club co-sponsored a blood drive with FFA providing refreshments, supplying publicity, recruiting volunteers. Members also worked with blood mobile volunteers. The big event of the year was visiting the U of I campus during their Life Science and Engineer Open House. Members visited many displays in various departments of Engineering and Physics. They also toured the National History museum, visited a herbarium, and the Medical School. Students had the opportunity to listen to heart irregularities, through instrumentations used for medical students to learn to identify heart problems. All in all, the Biology Club has a very successful year. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council got off to a fresh, new start this year. We had new officers and a new principal. Homecoming was a big success, and there was an excellent turnout at the dance. The band was Snyper. We got a lot of things done this year, and even more plans for next year. We had a fund-raiser, where we sold delicious candy and nuts in decorated tins. Everyone has put in a lot of effort. Things look even better for the future Student Councils. Good Luck. If you know the answer to this question, then perhaps you should have been on the Scholastic Bowl Team. Other qualifications are a quick index finger, fast thinking, and a willingness to look foolish. Among the history, mathematics, science, English, literature, chemistry, and physic questions our weakest subject was following directions. (Especially on the way home from competition.) Being our third year, we were not as successful as last year, but we felt academically successful. We ended the year with a record of 4-1 in the regular season. She was installed at an installation banquet on February 13, 1985 at the Churchill Cafe in Barry, IL. One of the most exciting events this year was a new event. The FHA Sweetheart Dance which was held on February 23rd at the grade school gym. Music was by Snyper. Our money making project was selling Treasure Chests and we came out pretty good. Our year ended at the FHA State Convention held in Springfield, IL. We had 2 money making projects. We had an oil change raffle last fall which was very successful, and we sold suckers this winter. Ronnie Howard's mom, Betty, was high saleswoman for raffle tickets. We have used our money to buy club jackets. We have also done a lot of work in our shop including tune ups, oil changes and some major overhauls. We did a lot of work on cars belonging to teachers, and we would like to thank them for trusting us. The club also took 3 trips this year. We went to a salvage yard and a machine shop in Jacksonville, and the Chrysler plant in St. Louis. There were also some fun times this year like when we humiliated the I T.C. Club in volleyball, and when Terry Whewell, Daron Virgin and Mitchell Smith found out the absolute maximum speed a small block Chevy motor can turn. But along with all the fun, our new teacher, Mr. Quigg, taught us a lot, and we would like to thank him for a fun and educational year. 1. After several months in the classroom and on the job, they knew what was expected. The jobs held by these ten students varied greatly and offered a lot of interesting conversation in the classroom. Every two weeks we had a student of the week. This lucky person was featured in the newspaper and an article telling what the person did on the job followed. These students were given a little party when their week was done. We also learned how to prepare our own income taxes which we all just loved. Another favorite was the little blue book that we had to fill out every day. However, some of us waited until the end of the month to fill out the whole book. For several weeks we had an independent study. Each student got to pick what they wanted to do and spent a week or two on that particular subject. Most of the students worked on the computers. This was a good experience and everyone enjoyed the break from class-work. That's what we did in Co-op this year. Although we did a lot of work, we had even more fun doing it. We would like to thank Mrs. Sipes for making our year in Co-op a very enjoyable one. by Randy Andrews 70 COUNTDOWN TO DEADLINE T-2 weeks and counting — Editor Joni Lawless assigns articles. As the students and teachers arrived at the Black-hawk, they were warmly greeted by the smiling faces of the junior class officers. When everyone was seated, Chris Scharwark welcomed the seniors on behalf of the junior class. The meal, following the invocation given by Melissa Weder, was excellent. After everyone settled down, Chris Scharwark, Janice Brown, and Tammy Fletcher read the prophecies to the seniors. Chris Pfeiffer and Chris Hub-bert then read the wills from the seniors to the juniors. Following the seniors' wills were the teachers' wills which were bravely read by Mr. Hilliard. The girls dressed in beautiful gowns decorated with satin and lace dancing with their guys who are decked out in tuxes with bow ties and cumber-bunds. Our pictures taken to preserve for precious memories of this occasion. A time never to be forgotten, but to cherish forever. Everyone sits down to relax, as it is time for the announcement of the Queen and her court. We are all so happy for Queen Sarajane and King Tony. They dance the traditional dance with the lights dim. Eleven-thirty arrives soon after. For some it is time to go home, for others, it is time to go to Ed's for breakfast. As we leave our gymnasium, we look back at the Junior's decorations and at our flowers in our hands. We want to remember this special evening as it has been The Best of Times. Between teaching the newcomers how to lay out pages, trying to find the mystery behind Shari's disappearing pages, and gorging ourselves with FOOD, we've had a lot of fun! The class has been exciting, but it has also been more than just fun and games, it has been hard work that has required total dedication. 1 don't think that anyone really realizes and appreciates the time and effort put into a yearbook until they get involved in our activities. By selling ads, cabbage patch clip-ons, having cake raffles at the football games, selling candy at the volleyball games, and having a bake sale, we have successfully managed to put together a yearbook that we can all be proud of! The staff will be losing a few seniors next year, but I think that the new staff can do a really great job. It takes a lot of co-operation and a lot of friendship to make the yearbook a successful one. I want to wish good luck to next year's staff and especially to next year's Seniors. Have fun guys!! It usually holds memorable moments of all types — good and bad. That is why the yearbook staff works hard to make it especially for you. The staff began the 84-85 year a little differently than we were accustomed to. First of all, we had to get used to Mother Menard not being here to guide us through the troubled times. Our new advisor, Mrs. Cawthon, was quite nice and tried to be extremely helpful to us. Although she claimed that she knew nothing about how to put a yearbook together, our staff was soon rolling along. We chose a theme, decided on captions, sold books, sold ads, assigned pages, worked on write-ups, made layouts, did 3-R's and hurried to meet our deadlines. In between all of this, we had to find times for trips to Jacksonville, raffles at the football games, sell candy at the volleyball games, sell Cabbage Patch clip-on dolls, and to have a bake sale which turned out pretty well. Our fund raising activities brought in some money which was truly needed to help pay our bills. For helping out, we truly want to thank all of the members of our staff and our very own NEW advisor Miss Pratt. For those of you who don't know who Miss Pratt is, she is the teacher who came to replace Mrs. Cawthon when she had to leave us. Miss Pratt is helpful and also very new to this. She has kept us moving along so that we don't get behind on our pages. Thank you Miss Pratt and thanks to all of the members of the staff for a job very well done. A tremendous thanks also goes to Merle Fox, the Times Office, and all of the other people who have helped to make this year a successful one. We hope that you have enjoyed looking at our book as much as we have had making it. To the Editors of next year, we wish you lots of luck! 87 3 a 1 a S2 s H K I 2 1 ii 133 ■3 8 zl £. £. 3 3 as a’sf $£ r Sf VA o' d in' 3 i.a i i I' a | 7_ C- — v o B «E d8 CL C.
