THE CHOSEN Because he is always for the senior class — Because he never makes a mistake (he thought he did once, but he was wrong) — Because he knows more about history, government, and economics than anyone should — Because he knows how to make those subjects almost interesting — Because this is his last year as an inspiring head football coach — and because he is, in spite of his gruff ways, a caring person — This book is respectfully dedicated to Mr Dunham. starring The Class of 1984 and featuring Tim Lawson as Student Council Rep. Add that to your regular work and what you do in band, football, volleyball. Pom-pons, cheerleading, etc., and you may look back later and wonder how you found time to do it — but it's always fun. At least this year it was fun up to Wednesday night when a certain thing happened and caused the bonfire to be canceled. (Thanks.) But that was soon forgotten, and we did the usual things like cramming twenty people into a pickup truck to ride around and paint the roads and tee pee various places. Everyone then went home to wash off the shaving cream and get ready for Friday with no classes — finest kind! The Friday movies were “Little Rascals” and “Take Down. The smells of popcorn and other food filled the auditorium and the forbidden soda cans were everywhere. Then the pep-rally, with so many skits that we didn't get to do them all. The MC from Alsey was cool, and the Hawk died — too bad! Then the floats lined up for judging near the bus garage, and the parade made its way past the grade school and uptown. Nobody's float fell apart, and it was generally agreed that all the floats were the best in years. One new feature — several people dressed up and marched in the parade. Maybe more will next year? It was good to see all the old grads at the game. We wiped out the Carrollton Hawks — what a great Homecoming victory! Everyone was ready to celebrate. Then it was time to hurry, hurry to get ready for the dance, with the Rockatomix. Finally the day was over. We were glad at the time, but now that we look back, we wish it could have lasted forever. We will probably be remembered as the class that caused the bonfire to be canceled, but we'd like to state “ ...I ' ie enthusiastic wood-gatherers were juniors, and not many of the juniors did it. We're mostly pretty nice, you know? We hope that nobody “gets” the gatherers, as threatened. We exceeded the goal on the magazine sale, and put on a wonderful prom for the seniors. We got first place on our two-day float, thanks to Mr. McCall and his ability to make our wildcat move. We remember some funny things — like Mic Savage’s expensive red car that never ran, the smoke bombs we weren't blamed for, and the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of Mr. Reg Dunham’s monkey. All in all, it hasn’t been a dull year. With a few minor adjustments, the faculty was unchanged from previous years. Mr. Gilmore was replaced by Mrs. Haney, who took on the responsibility of the biology department. But many other little things happened this year that made the semesters interesting. Some notable examples: Mrs. Harr's tap dancing and her mispronunciation of Huck Finn, taking third place float in the Homecoming parade, the trauma of speech class, the hilarity of General Business, watching the sophomore guys buying flowers for girls they didn’t even know, J.V. football team having an umblemished record 0-9, and the J.V. girls having a trememdous basketball season. It has been nice to have the juniors around for everyone to pick on this year; we could stand around and enjoy our “clean” reputation. One of the highlights of the freshman year was getting fourth place in the Homecoming float contest. Our Queen attendant was Katie Coon. On the sports scene it was a successful year for the boys. The freshman football team had a record of 2-1, and the basketball team also had a winning record. We played some exciting games — with Greenfield, when it came down to the last seconds, and Routt and Calhoun when the games went into overtime. We held a powerful Triopia team to twenty-two points; Routt and Triopia made it to the playoffs. We will never forget Martin’s fake field goal and pass. We will also remember root-hogging with the freshmen in the mud, and running the 352. All of us survived. All in all, the season was very enjoyable, and the 1983 team would like to thank a great coaching staff, super managers, encouraging fans and good cheerleaders. The seniors are glad to have been a part of Mr. Dunham's last year, and the underclassmen hope that the next head coach will be someone they can respect as much. Requires five basic skills: the ability to get the ball over the net on the serve, to bump the ball, to spike on the return, to set the ball to the spiker to be spiked (to kill), and to be on your toes and be aggressive. The game also means some bumps and bruises, floor burns, jammed fingers, and broken blood vessels. As an overall statement, volleyball is a lot of fun and a good way to be involved with other people of the same age. The first season's practice for Winchester High School’s volleyball team took place on August 17. The building year was over with, but the team had a lot of hard work to do in practice. Time flew by with Christy and Mary trying to make it as big surfers and Karen trying to keep the floor swept with her body. The Junior Varsity ended the season with a record of three wins and fifteen losses. The varsity’s record wasn’t as good, with one win and sixteen losses. The volleyball team needs everyone’s support at their games; the future holds a dream - THE STATE TOURNAMENT! Pam Evans Top: Playing North Greene. JV. 44 HOOPER(S) The 1983-84 Varsity Wildcat squad suffered from a remarkable lack of consistency. Some nights we were really good, and some nights we were ???????? Still, our 14 14 record is somewhat deceiving; ten of our fourteen losses were to teams that won 19 or more games this season. We again played well in the Winchester Tournament. We beat Routt and then upset a tough Brown County team to finish fourth. This makes five straight years the Cats have captured a trophy. We also tied for second in the conference with a record of 3-2. The Cats will lose four seniors: Phil Hettinger, Joe Killday, Phil McLaughlin, and Randy Pence. Phil Hettinger won the MVP award, Joe Killday the Wildcat Award, and Phil McLaughlin the Hustler Award. Mark Co was the Most Improved, and Tony Cox won the Free Throw Trophy. Phil H. and Mark made the WNC All Conference Team. With the experience gained this year the future looks bright. If the underclassmen work hard over the summer we could be real tough the next few years. Thanks again, seniors, for your efforts. SOPHISTICATED LADIES Looking back on the 1983-84 season, it was a happy one. The varsity had nine returning lettermen, and won twelve in a row betore a tough loss to Rushville. We were fifth in the Carrollton tourney. We dropped Calhoun to win the WIVC with a 3-0 record, and were 1 in the regionals but lost by one to Calhoun. The varsity ended up with the best record in Win-Co-Hi basketball with 20 wins and 3 losses; the junior varsity had an unblemished record of 18-0. Many things about this year will be remembered such as loud music on the bus ... five-minute runs ... Be serious! ... Oops! Carol’s shorts . .. happy 32nd birthday to Merl .. Amy lifting weights ... slick floor ... soda from Bonnie ... Wright and Greer officiating . . . Robin's half-court shots .. . Then due to some injuries and some tough competition, they lost the last five games to end the season 10 and 10. The team was able to go 5 and 1 in the conference to win a share of the conference title with Calhoun, which makes the third straight year the Wildcats have at least shared the title. Then we started playing ball and won twelve straight games before losing to Quincy Notre Dame. We finished with a record of 13-6. A few highlights of the year were contributed by Chris Pfeiffer with her great elegance, Amy Northrup with her running ability, and Kathy Early with her splitting catches at first base. We had a good season, all in all, and we had a lot of fun at practices. The 1985 team should be just as good, if not better, than the team of '84. It was about a wacky cruise ship on which everything went wrong. The crew quit because there was no money and no insurance, so the captain hired some inexperienced people; the first mate was constantly seasick, a passenger (a famous producer) was constantly hounded by an air-headed movie star, one of the passengers was wobbed” of a lot of jewelry, the ship was slowly falling apart, and one of the crewmen came back to hijack the ship because he said it belonged to his country, Bamboola. Some memorable happenings during rehearsal: Martin attacking Lori, Rasputin getting drop-kicked, stomped on, hung from the ceiling, and generally getting the stuffing kicked out of him. Our year went by in what seemed a FLASH (DANCE) We began with a trip to the Illinois State Fair where our goal was to BEAT IT — the heat, that is. We almost cooked during the competition as it was a typical hot day for the fair. EVERYBODY WANT YOU was the message we sent to the seven schools who came to our third Annual Dance Revue which we sponsored with the Cheerleaders in November. IT'S A GOOD THING we sold spices this year: it provided us with a sounder financial base than we had had in years. We were ON THE LOOSE when we went to the Miss NCS Illinois competition in Bloomington. Christy Lewis entered the competition for our squad. The year was FAR FROM OVER when we did our joint routine with the cheerleaders for the Jacksonville Invitational. It was such fun and looked so nice that we did it again for our fans at our last home basketball game. Hats and canes were packed when we went to NEW YORK, NEW YORK for Potpourri. We only lost our “luggage once when someone dropped a cane. Our words for our great fans this past year is YOUR LOVE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY 'cause we appreciate all of their support. Sharing ideas, friendship, sad times, and fun times has made the year go by quickly and happily for the Cheerleaders. In the summer, the varsity Cheerleaders received several ribbons at the Dynamic Cheerleading Association Camp. Tragically, Dawn Ellen hurt her ankle right before final evaluation, but the WHS squad won second place over al„ anyway. J.V. cheerleaders won ribbons for best pompon routine and flashy |umps at the CICF camp in Jacksonville. They also won the spirit award, which is voted on by the entire camp. Football season and Homecoming also passed quickly, leading to our third annual Cheerleader Pom-Pon Dance Revue in November. We did a joint routine to BEAT IT. The girls worked hard for the basketball season and it showed in their polished performance. Snow stopped us from going to Havana Tournament, but not for long. Then it was time for the Sixty-third Annual Winchester Tournament; as always, the squad, with the help of the fans, kept spirit high. All too soon regionals came and our season ended after our final |Oint routine with Pom-Pons to FAR FROM OVER on Parents' Night. [HE SEARCHERS In its second year, the Biology Club sponsored a rlood drive in conjunction with the FFA, toured Vlemorial Hospital in Springfield, and held a cake ind afghan raffle. We also sold soda and candy at iome volleyball games to help finance equipment or the biology room. Being a career-oriented club, we wrote to many universities and organizations for information concerning pre-med curricula and the medi- cal field. Practices were chaos because no one was ever WRONG!! After the first heavy loss on November 7, our glorious Leader, Mrs. Bradshaw, kept the team together with false promises of glory and riches beyond our wildest dreams. The next meet was closer because ole CB put in the big guns, Chris Scharwark and Ken Day. Our final team was decided on just before the final match when we defeated Triopia (which not many others can say). Our record was 1-3 going into the big WIVC tournament. People called us the “Cinderella” team. Mary and Sandy wooed the Greenfield men to reveal their stragey while Chris, Ken, and Martin forced information out of the Calhoun girls; with this combination the Winchester Wildcats came up with the championship without using their 1 strategic plan (answering an English question with the word prophylactic). Next year’s team will have a hard time replacing the seniors that are graduating, but maybe they will manage. Sandy Pfeiffer, Chris Scharwark Top: Sandy Pfeiffer. Above, seated: Mary Margaret Brown. The Student Council, under the supervision of Mr. Eddy, began the year by electing these officers: president, Todd Lawson; Yice-presi-dent, Rita Lawless; secretary, Bryan Cannon; treasurer, Chris Hubbert. The Council planned the '83 Homecoming activities, which included showing Little Rascals and the feature movie Takedown. The dance following the football game featured music by the Rockatomix. Next on the agenda was a trip to Wheeling High School on November 9, 10, and 11. This was the first time that Winchester High School has had a student exchange for more than one day. The Wheeling students came to Winchester in December. This was a very enjoyable experience for all who attended. The Student Council later planned Purple and Gold Week, February 27 through March 2. Music for the dance on Friday night was by the Pat Bowe Band, and profits were shared with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. FFA ACTIVITIES On National Ag Day, March 20, 1984, we held a sheep shearing demonstration for kinder garten and first- and second-grade pubils. Tina McMillen, a freshman ag student, brought four sheep to school to be sheared; she also brought a couple of twin Montadale lambs for the students to pet. That evening, we had a pork chop supper. We served nearly 200 people at the grade school cafeteria. During National FFA Week we had a variety of activities, including a pizza party at noon for junior and senior FFA members, a visit from a game biologist, and a field trip to the John Wood Ag Campus at Perry. The Winchester Ambulance Service showed us a rescue vehicle and all the equipment; Dr. George Roegge, a veterinarian, talked to Ag I on swine health; Representative Tom Ryder addressed the FFA in an assembly; we gave corsages to all the female teachers; and Mayor Evans signed a proclamation declaring National FFA Week. Our Safety Program is a year-round activity. We had a variety of safety materials on display, including denim safety caps, wood pencils, note pads, bumper stickers and safey stick-on logos. lop: Karla Collison, Section 15 Public Speaking Above: Marcus Moore, George ebrun (game biologist). We painted safety billboards and displayed them in the community; we sponsored an eight-hour hunter-safety program and qualified thirty-nine young people in gun safety; we participated in National Farm Safety Week, National Fire Prevention Week, and National Poison Prevention Week. The FFA has a corn land lab consisting of ten acres that we rent from the county commissioners; we also have a soybean land lab to compare varieties. The FFA will be active at the State FFA Convention in Champaign this summer; Chris Fletcher will play in the State FFA Band, and Carrie Koyne and Susie Jefferson will sing with the FFA Choir. Jom Lawless will receive the State FFA Safety Award, and the chapter will receive other awards for our accomplishments in the year-round FFA program. The annual FFA Livestock and Horticulture Fair is held at Carrollton during July. Students have an opportunity to exhibit their livestock, poultry, and horticulture projects in competition with other Section 15 FFA members. TRADING PLACES In Co-op Class we learned how to be successful on the job, how to get along with our co workers, and other necessary things. We worked on income taxes, kept up our little blue books, watched a demonstration on how to give a back-rub, had a delayed Christmas party, and planned our Co-op Banquet. Judy Evans worked at the Scott County Clerk’s office, Sandy Brickey and Jeannia Fry at Jack's, Beth Brown at the Scott County Treasurer's office, Patti Glossop at the Winchester City Hall, Traci Brown at David Cherry's office, Marie Renner at B R Variety, Angie Burby at Eagle’s, Chris Fletcher at Scott County Farm Service, Steve Sipes at Carole Jean IGA, Kelly Fear-neyhough and Brandi Kirkbride at the Scott County Nursing Center, Dawn Ellen Eddinger at Montgomery Insurance, and Rebecca Hawkins at Winchester National Bank and the Winchester Times. We write the paper, sell candy, disrupt 8th hour classes, catch mice in closets, roam the halls with “constructive work,” listen to the band practice outside, and gossip. Color us busy but corrupt. It takes a lot of time and dedication to put together a yearbook (and to put up with Mrs. Menard saying Come on, kidlets, do you realize that the deadline is tomorrow? ). We did a lot of hard work and ate about two dozen pizzas, but all in all, the staff OF ART had a lot of fun putting together the 1983-84 yearbook. Richie working on Drama Club pages DEAR FRIENDS: You’ve now seen almost all of the book; w; sure hope you have enjoyed it. This has been quite an adventurous year. V hen school started, we thought maybe we would be the whole staff, but worry about having enough staff me nbers lessened as people came in all through the year — Sara, Sandy, Jody, Shari, Lisa, Kendra, Chuck, Riche, and Todd. Boy, what a relief! Hardly anyone who isn't on the staff really realizes how much time and effort go into making a yearbook. We have to think of a theme, plan the borad, sell .ids, sell the books, assign pages, make dates to get pictures taken, get writeups from people, make layouts, do 3 Rs, type copy and captions, think of headlines for every page, and so on and so on. Those are just the major jobs — we'd hate to start naming the minor ones! We’d like to thank the staff for a job well done. Special thanks to Shari for doing ads: Sandy for the division pages, honors and awards, and many of the ad pages; Richie and Chuck for the baby pics; and Todd for the faculty pages. Mrs. Menard gets a big hand because she always has to be there when we’re working and has to answer all our questions. We'd like to thank all the people who wrote copy for us, to the errand-runners who willingly went to the drugstore and the Times office (and other places) so many times. Thanks to Mindy Swarrmgim, Emily Williams, Doug Bell, Tim Fearneyhough, and all the other peons who did all the odd jobs for us. We hope the pictures we chose give you many memories of the 1983-84 school year. Good luck to next year’s staff, and especially next year’s editors! 79 Right Phil McLaughlin. SATURDAY NIGHT And Sunday Morning At last it's here, a night long awaited — Prom, 1984 — a night of ribbons and lace, tuxedos, and pink-tipped carnations. It's a night to dance under a crepe-paper ceiling of rainbow pastels, to share with friends a special memory we'll keep forever. We smile, our pictures are taken, a moment in time is captured forever. Decorations are everywhere — so many balloons! Filled with helium, they reach high; soon they become souvenirs of the fun we have had. “Prodigy” stops. A spotlight sweeps the floor. Chris announces the queen and her court. The smiling court assembles, parents beam, flashbulbs twinkle in the dark. The floor fills with people. The girls we know — tonight they are ladies with their gentlemen. We laugh, we talk, we dance, we enjoy this special evening. We put aside all thoughts of tomorrow, because for now, “We’ve got tonight.” Kathy Summers left: crownbearers Mindy Eckle. LOCAL HERO I know that I speak for the entire faculty and all of the students when I say that we will miss Amos Greenwood tremendously. He is the only person in Winchester history who has received two standing ovations from the assembled crew! When Amos was in the building, his presence was like an invisible shield for the rest of us. Just hearing his distant whistle (most often On the Good Ship Lollypop ) was enough assurance that any problem could be dealt with — that all was right with the world. Good luck, friend. The place won't be the same without you. Carolyn Jud 100 .
