In spite of some crucial injuries, the 1982 football team stayed together and played some good football. Winning the conference was something we had waited fourteen years to accomplish. Our success was due to a very good coaching staff, great managers, helpful and encouraging parents, outstanding fans, and super cheerleaders, as well as a determined team. The season wasn'r all work, though, especially dunk-the-underclassmen day when Mr. Dunham dived in with them — he was mud from head to toe. We hope next years team does even better. Good luck! The team was led by seniors Peter Peak, Bobby Jefferson, Billy McLaughlin, and E.R. Anslyn. Another senior, Mike Brown, last year's leading scorer, was unable to play because of a knee injury suffered in football. The Cats overcame shooting problems by employing a pressing man-to-man defense. This hustling, aggressive style of basketball helped us to stay competitive all year. Of our fifteen losses only three were by more than 10 points, and we lost seven games by 3 points or less. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly our two upset wins in the Winchester Tournament. We defeated second-rated Meredosia 70-52, and seventh-rated Griggs-ville 49-47 to finish fourth in the tournament. This year's Most Valuable Player was Peter Peak, who led the team in scoring and rebounding. E.R. Anslyn was Most Improved, Billy McLaughlin was Best Defensive Player, and Bobby Jefferson received the Wildcat Award. The Free Throw Trophy went to Phil Hettinger. It was an enjoyable season — the guys hustled, scrapped, and fought hard all the way. Thanks, guys, for your determination and efforts. Coach Moore Facing page: Varsity Wildcats. (We had a young and inexperienced team including only two lettermen and one senior.) Then we won the consolation championship at Carrollton, which inspired us enough to let us win seven out of our last ten games and to end up with a season record of 13 and 10. We again won the conference title, sharing it with Carrollton and Calhoun. Three girls made all-conference — Robin Andrews, Rebecca Hawkins, and Amy Northrop; Rebecca also made the all-tournament team at Carrollton. This year's MVP and Rebound Awards went to Rebecca Hawkins, the Free-Throw Trophy went to Cody Jones, Most Im- proved to Robin Andrews, and the Wildcat Awards went to Amy Northrup and Judy Evans. On the JV level, the team ended with a line record of 13 and 7 and won the consolation championship at Beardstown. Two JV awards went to Janice Brown for MVP and to Mary Brown for Best Free-Throw percentage. I will be looking forward to next year as all of this year's players will be back except our senior, Cody Jones. Coach Dunham Above: Varsity. Front, co-captains Rebecca Hawkins and Cody Jones. Back. The first season practice for Winchester High School's newest intermural team — the girls’ volleyball squad — took place on Thursday, August 18. Two weeks and fifteen light bulbs later, the teams were ready for their first outing. The first match was a frosh-soph contest with Waverly on September 4; the first varsity jv match was at home against Triopia on Thursday, September 9 The team spent many drudging hours in practice — drudging because while working very hard on their serving, bumping, and spiking drills, they had to put up with the incessant whistling of Janice Gourley. However, there were the lighter moments when Sandy Pfeiffer would deliver her patented FTD spikes, and Bobbi Williams and Janice Brown would jump off both feet instead of the wrong one. And, of course. when two certain freshmen with the initials of Lisa Feameyhough and Kathy Summers would dust off the rafters with one single serve. The Junior Varsity ended the season with a winning record of nine wins and four losses. The Varsity ended the sea -son with a record not quite so good. However, the old building year ” is behind us and bigger and better things lie ahead. In case you 're not sure of what we mean, check it out for yourself next year! The final record of 7-8 was very respectable, considering that we had only four returning lettermen. We learned two of our favorite routines, WOR KIN' FOR THE WEEKEND and WE'VE GOT THE BEAT. Michelle won the Spirit Award. In September we sold I Love the Wildcats” buttons. Our trip to ISU in October was highlighted by Tina's competing in the Miss Illinois Pom Pon Pageant. The Second Annual Dance Revue was again sponsored jointly by the Cheerleaders and the Pom Pon squad. It was attended by Carrollton, Ashland, Jacksonville, ISD, Alsey, and Winchester Grade schools. In December we attended a one-day camp in O’Fallon. We learned routines to YOU DROPPED A BOMB ON ME, GLORIA, EVERYBODY WANTS YOU, MICKEY, DON'T FIGHT IT. and I RAN. We were exhausted! Before we knew it the J-ettes were having their revue at the Bowl, where we did routines to EVERYBODY WANTS YOU and IT'S A GOOD THING. Then the JVs went to Round Lake with Miss Malmstedt, spent the weekend, and went to a one-day clinic at Antioch High School. The varsity squad went to the Dynamic Cheerleading Association camp at Macomb this summer; they won several ribbons and received the trophy for Best All-Round Cheerleaders in the varsity division. During football season it was great to cheer for a winning Wildcat ream. Homecoming weekend rushed by — all the preparations for our weiner roast and pep rally really paid off, and as the saying goes, a good time was had by all. Between seasons the cheerleaders and the Pom-pon girls prepared for our second annual cheerleader — pom -pon review. We did a joint routine to Working for the Weekend. Several surrounding schools participated in the review. In no time at all, it was basketball season. The outlook was dim, since some of our players had been injured — but the cheerleaders never doubted, and sent notes to the players to raise their spirits. In January, the social event of the year took place — the Winchester Tournament. As always, we maintained the cheerleader hospitality room. As the last day of tournament arrived, the tension mounted — who will win the cheerleading trophy? The winner was announced, and — eventually — the Winchester Cheerleading Squad received another trophy. The rest of the basketball season went by in a blur. Juture Homemakers of America This year the Winchester FHA became a state-affiliated chapter, which means that we can attend sectional and state rallies. At the Jacksonville rally, we were in charge of entertainment; at the Meredosia rally, Cody Jones and Janet King placed first in a two-person cooking demonstration. The two-day state convention in Springfield was very exciting; Cody and Janet received a second-place rating. We also tried some Greek food — it was good! We sold calendars, held a bake sale, went caroling at the Nursing Center and later came back for a Christmas party. This year has been educational and a lot of fun at the same time. When we found out last year that we were going to head the making of this book, and that nearly every one on the staff was fairly new at what they were doing, we knew that our work was cut our for us. But I have been on the staff for four years and Tina for three, and we agree this has been a really good group to work with. We appreciate all the long hours put in by our staff members in Room 4 doing 3-R’s, labeling pictures and cleaning up the back table every time we turned around. Karen Arnold was a great help in organizing the baby-pix pages, staying after school to work and even coming in on Sundays. Deanna Shimchick is the youngest member of this super staff and she was terrific when it came to doing 3-R‘s and ad pages (her favorite, right, Deanna?). (She was one of the hardest people to get a picture of]) We would like to thank Lisa Scott for all her work on the ads and putting together the highlights of the seniors' high school days. Sonya Summers is a terrific general helper. Sandy Brackett and Robin Churchill were on the staff for half a year and they both did an excellent job. Carrie Koyne andJamie Lawrence, both first-year members, have been great general help to everyone on the staff. We would like to give special thanks to all of our helpers who have put in some time for us when they could have been doing something else. Bryan, Karen, and Karla Cannon, Patti Gregory, Bridget Bell, Kathy Summers, Teresa Myers, Jenny Rhodes have all been of special help in labeling pictures, making 3-R s, checking proofs, and just generally being there when we needed something done. We will both miss Win-Co-Hi and making the yearbook for everyone. Good luck to each and every one of you in your future plans. We hope that you get out of life what you want and that you make your every wish your goal for tomorrow. BSE, Northeast Missouri State University. 83 Zhose who make it go Left: Rex W. Eddy, principal. Right: Virgil Coughlin, superintendent. Below: Board of Education, Scott County Community Unite District 1, 1982-83. Seated: Gary Hurrelbrink, Steven Andras, Jacqueline Hanback, Robert Brown. Standing: Virgil Coughlin, Catherine Taylor (secretary), Janet Staples, Don Pence, Elmer Suttles. Bottom left: Janet Greer. WHS secretary. Center: Geraldine McGuire, board office secretary. Right: Evelyn Haggard, board office secretary. WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I thought the superintendent made the money to pay the teachers; I mean he drew it and he colored it green. The rest of the time he listened to the weather forecast and dreamed about Easter vacation. NOW I KNOW that he only worries about the money to pay the teachers; the rest of the time he worries about whether more people will be mad if he calls off school because of snow or if he doesn't. WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I thought the school board members walked through the halls of the school writing things down about what the students were doing. When they found out, they didn 't tell anyone — they just made new rules. NOW I KNOW the the school board members hardly ever walk through the halls. They do spend a lot of time (and don't even get paid for it) trying to solve problems and get enough money to do it all. WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I thought the cooks at the grade school found everything there in the kitchen when they came in the morning, and they just served it. NOW I KNOW that the cooks have to figure out what people will eat and not leave on their trays — plus figuring out how to cook for hundreds of people every day. They make it pretty good, too. WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I thought the bus driver was awfully smart because he knew where everyone lived. He stopped fights when he had to and didn't yell more than he had to. NOW I KNOW I was right. WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I didn't know there was a school board office, or any secretaries there. I didn‘t know there were any records to keep or any forms to fill out. WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I thought a was feet did bad WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I thought the principal about seven tall. If I something enough, he could call the army to come and get me. NOW I KNOW that a principal is a person just like anyone else. Sometimes he makes wise decisions but sometimes he doesn't bee a use he doesn't know everything that has happened. He never actually kills anyone, and probably doesn't know the army's telephone num -ber. WHEN I WAS LITTLE — I thought the lady in the school office just an -swered the telephone all day and read magazines to pass the time. NOW I KNOW that the lady in the office has more to do than probably anyone in the whole school. It is nice that she can still be so friendly and helpful. janitor just moved peacefully along behind his mop and hummed to himself. I didn t know he had to fix the boilers and toilets and sinks and water fountains and lights and projectors and shades and doors and windows and the whole building, really. I WAS PRETTY DUMB. Top left: school cooks Millie Scott, Helen Tankersley, and Jessie Campbell. Top right: Art Capps, bus mechanic. Center: Bus drivers, front: Betsy Kruger, Donna Lawrence, Bonnie Summers. Back: Clarence Sheppard, Dave Daniels, Randy Do-len, Lester Turner, Ivan Me Dade, Henry Krueger. Missing Geraldine McGuire, Sharon Miller, Bob Capps, Betty Capps. See p. 86 for picture of Amos Greenwood, everybody's favorite janitor. There is a rumor chat our good friend, Amos Greenwood, will retire next year. While he is still around, the students and faculty would like him to know that we respect his many abilities and enjoy his unfailing sense of humor.
