When the rains came during practice, the freshmen really enjoyed sliding in the mud, although a few had to be encouraged to do so. One of the Lawson twins wanted to get taped to a bench, so a few juniors and seniors obliged (until Mr. Reed made us cut him loose). Dummy and aftershave fights in the locker room were always a lot of fun. Top: Coach McCall, Head Coach Dunham, Coach Reed, Coach Batty. Above: Letter-men. Center right: Tim Blivens, the team's dependable manager. As a whole the season was all right, but that’s as far as it goes. We had high goals but couldn’t meet them. The loss of a couple of players due to injury hurt us a little. If the guys work hard next year, they ought to have a real good team. Good luck! Our record was 7-2 with the only two losses going to Greenfield 4-3 and Triopia 14-5. The most exciting game of the season was the Routt game when we came from a 9 4 deficit in the seventh and tied the score. We won in eight innings 10-9, and won the conference that night. Lisa Grady, LeaAnn Gibbs, Robin Andrews, Kerry Grubb, Amy Northrop, and Rita Lashmet were all chosen to the All-Conference team. The Most Valuable Player was Lisa Grady, and the Most Improved Player was Rita Lashmet; the Wildcat Award went to Anita Lashmet. Mrs. Cloyd. Top: Seniors Patricia Cody and Lori Evans. We have a young group of girls and our lack of experience hindered us somewhat. We also played a completely different schedule from the fall, and some of the teams were more competitive. I think we can look forward to a good year in ’82-83, because our experienced players will be returning. Big Mike in action The freshman record of 4 and 12 may not sound too impressive, but not all the games were as bad as that sounds; we were usually in either the first or second half of every game. If all of us could have got hot on the same night, we would have been unbeatable. We would like to thank the cheerleaders for being there every game — they were about the only fans we had. We also thank Mr. Reed for putting up with us and never getting mad. HA! Chris Wingler FRESHMEN. Top: Bruce Shipley. Middle Coach Reed. Mic Savage. Mike White, Doug Savage. Ed Staples. However, the Cats enjoyed a winning season, 17-11. After a slow start, the Cats turned things around in the Winchester Tournament. After defeating Perry and arch-rival Triopia, we met the 1-rated Beardstown Tigers in the semi-finals. In a game that will be remem -bered for years to come, we suffered a heartbreaking triple-overtime loss, 50-49. Winchester then captured the third-place trophy by defeating Brown County 70-42. This year's MVP was Mike Brown, who led the team in scoring and rebounding. John Staples was Most Improved, Tom Barber was Hustler of the Year, and Dick Coon received the Wildcat Award. The Free-Throw Trophy went to Mark Greenwood. 30 Coach Moore VARSITY. Standing: James Hettinger, manager; Mark Greenwood. Dick Coon, Mike D. We had to play an aggressive man-to-man defense just to stay with other teams, but at the end of every game, the score board usually showed us winning. Coach Roth had to put up with a lot from us (and the other way around, too), but we would like to thank Mr. Roth for a successful 1981-82 season. 31 Billy McLaughlin LADIES The girls' basketball team can look back on a lot of good memories from their 81 -82 season. Not only did they record one of the best won-loss seasons in girls' basketball, but they went undefeated in conference play to take the conference title and also captured first place in the Porta Tournament. As I look back at my first year as a coach at W.H.S. and a girls' coach. I'll never forget the spirit and the teamwork this team displayed during both good times and bad. The biggest thrill of the year was upsetting Porta at their own tournament after they had won fourteen straight games. Probably the biggest disappointment of the year was being defeated for the second time for the Regional title. I don't think a person could be more pleased than 1 am with both the J.V. team, whose record was 10-6, and the varsity, who ended up at 17-7. It was an enjoyable season — not only the games, but the comradeship of practice and the good times we spent on the bus. Coach M. Dunham IN COURT Top: Co-captains Lisa Grady, Kerry Grubb. The Wildcats began the 1982 season with a balanced team and hopes for a conference championship. Three cases of mono, two cases of strep throat, one stomach infection, one torn quadricep, and two cases of listlessness left us with two upperclassmen competing in the District meet at season’s end. Of these, Scott Arnold set a personal best in the 300-m low hurdles, Mike D. Brown set a personal best in the triple jump and 110-m high hurdles, and a school record on the 300-m low hurdles. Also competing and setting personal bests were underclassmen Bryan Cannon, Martin Gregory, and Eric Brown. Our underclassmen look very strong in the field events for upcoming seasons. We fell behind in the beginning of the year and just couldn't get back up and win any more, despite some strong efforts by Coach Reed. We did, however, reach a very big goal that we have been chasing for several years — we won the conference trophy. The most valuable player for the 1982 season was Dick Coon. The players appreciate all the support we received from the school, friends, fans, and especially the loyal parents who tried to be at every game, whether at home or thirty miles away. We would like to thank Coach Reed for the determination, time, and effort he gave us in order to make us into a better team. Todd Little Top: Sieve McLaughlin, pitcher. Right: seniors. Early in the fall, we participated in the NCA Miss Illinois Pom-Pon competition at Illinois State University with our routine to FAME.” Tina Sanders, Kathy Quigg, and Jaime O'Donnell also competed in individual categories. In November we and the cheerleaders held the First Annual Dance Revue with squads from Griggsville and Jacksonville attending. Our special selection was ALL THAT JAZZ in which we showed off our new hats and canes. The Winchester Tournament was the showcase for our version of THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO Before we knew it the time had come for us to go to the Jacksonville Dance Revue where we performed one of our favorite numbers, URGENT. A week later it was Senior Night and time for our annual joint Pom-Pon Cheerleader performance to CELEBRATION. The year ended with our participation in the tenth annual Potpourri and FUNKY TOWN. We also remember other fun songs including our opening BE TRUE TO 38 YOUR SCHOOL, JESSE'S GIRL, and HE'S SO SHY. ENTERTAINERS In the summer of 1981, the varsity cheerleaders went to the Dynamic Cheerleading Association Camp in Bloomington. They won the ribbon for best pom-pon routine, the Cheerleader Mount Award, and the Spirit Award, which was voted on by all the members at camp. They ranked second overall in the varsity division. The JV squad attended the International Cheerleading Foundation Camp at Peoria. The JV and varsity cheerleaders joined to perform at the Illinois State Fair second annual cheerleading competition, and received 251 of a possible 300 points. The varsity squad received the highest honor in January at the sixtieth annual Winchester Tournament when they won the cheerleading trophy for the second year in a row. The year has been hectic. There have been fun times and a few sad times but I hope everyone has enjoyed being entertained with contests, skits, cheers, and much more. The Marching Wildcats began a successful 1981 -82 season by going to the Western Illinois 4-H campgrounds at Jacksonville for the third annual three-day Marching Wildcat Band Gimp. We spent many hours in marching, rehearsing the music, and learning routines. Competition started with the Pittsfield Fall Festival Parade on September 12 in which we won first place. The following week we also won first place in the Griggsville Apple Festival parade. On October 10 we traveled to the University of Illinois, where we took fourth place in Class C competition. Drum Major Paul Cowhick took first place. Then we went to Brown County for the West Central Illinois Marching Band Association's field show competition; we won third place in Class A, and the auxiliary brought home the overall colorguard trophy. We wound up a successful season at I.S.U. in the State of Illinois Invitational show competition. We placed third in Class C and Paul Cowhick again won first place in the Drum Major category; our auxiliary placed fifth out of forty-58 seven other units. We celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, with many acts from other years — Carl Ator and Steve Moore as the Smothers Brothers, Janie Reardon's original songs. The Unknown Comic, Tracy Cooper as King Tut, Rick Murphy with a piano medley, the magic of Randy Springer (Randal the Great), Gerry Daley as the Dirty Old Man, Tom Peterson's impersonation of Tinker Bell, Herb Kaiserman and the Baby Siftin' Boogie, The Chosen Ones (Mike and Melanie Rueter, Randy and Tracy Cooper), The Country Stars, the faculty Can-Can (Randy Fisher, Carroll Hilliard, Dave Pfeiffer, Herb Kaiserman, Randy Cooper, Jay Hornbeek, Gerry Daley), Wayne Brown and the Warriors, The German Band, the Hokey Pokey, and Many others. We raffled off cakes and an afghan, auctioned a number of items, sold the famous Blue Light Specials, played The Price is Right, and gave a door prize (a case of Sylvania light bulbs), plus awards for attending all ten Potpourris — won by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne King, Janet Baughman, and Mary Lashmett. The WHS Pom-pon girls were a special guest group. For the second time since 1973, we organized an alumni jazz band; it played Stan Kenton's Here's That Rainy Day, Night Train, and Woody Herman's Light My Fire. Members of the band: saxophones — Lora Coultas, Rodney Springer, Sally King, Dennis King, Leanne Rueter; trumpets —Jay Hornbeek, Steve Moore, Tracy Cooper, Rick Murphy; trombones — Don Smith, Jay Marshall, Pam Shive, Dave Schafer, Randy Cooper, Alan Baughman, John Sauer, Jeff Shive; flutes — Deanna Gant, Anita 60 Coultas Newman; piano — Chris Jefferson, Becky Cox; vibraphone — Dan Baughman; congas — Dave Newman; bass guitar — Tom Peterson; drum set — Ray Long, Randy Springer, Wendell Hutchcraft. This year the Jazz Band went to the Wesleyan Jazz Clinic and to festivals at Oak Lawn, Eastern, and Farmington. On tour we presented concerts at Lincoln, Octavia, and Eastland Mall. We also gave a special performance for the Illinois Bankers' Association, and with the Jazz Choir held Jazz Night in March. Jazz Band (top): Front — Deb Kirkpatrick, Beth Brown. At the National FFA Convention in Kansas City we received a gold rating on our Chapter Safety program, and a silver rating on our Building Our American Communities program. Five members attended the National Safety Congress in Chicago, and our chapter received an Award of Merit. National Agriculture Day had a different atmosphere this year at Winchester High. Instead of having the traditional barnyard zoo, we involved high school students and had a variety of activities that the teachers and students participated in. At lunch we served porky burgers. Our chapter kept up its winning ways in Section 15 activities this year, too. We won first place honors in crop judging, soil judging, program of activities, and had five first-place foundation winners and two district foundation winners. We placed second in poultry judging and in the Ag Mechanics contest. At the grain show we exhibited the first-place gallon of corn and first-place 20 lbs. of corn sample. 62 Several members exhibited their livestock, garden, rabbits, chickens, crops, and other SOEP projects at the Section 15 Livestock Fair at Carrollton and the Section 15 Grain Show at Southwestern. Our chapter took the highest total of premiums at the Livestock Fair. Our shop projects this year consisted primarily of constructing hog cookers, picnic tables, bird houses, hog troughs, etc. Our basketball team had a 5-1 record, playing a benefit game with WEA1 Air Force and netting a $130 profit for the Scott County Ambulance Service. We chose to perform Mixup at the Mortuary, but only after we had ascertained that we could borrow enough trolleys from Coonrod's Funeral Home. We were only allowed to set up our stage (at the grade school) if it didn’t rain, our portable walls turned out to be somewhat less than portable, and we had to store about a ton of evergreens on the library roof — but it went well (mostly). The cast will remember Crystal’s droopy drawers, hiding Todd’s Yamaha from Mr. Murdach, Marsha's lady-like snorting, and of course the after-the-play party at Miss Jud’s. Club activities included participation in the ITC volleyball tournament, sponsorship of the annual AMC basketball tournament, and washing and waxing of cars to earn money to pay for the tournament and for club jackets. Auto Mechanics classes — we have seen lots of dirty oil and rusty cars this year. Juniors did the bulk of the mechanical work including oil changes and tune-ups. Seniors turned out a number of paint jobs — some not bad, and some excellent. By the year's end we will have painted twenty cars and trucks. From left Andy Sellars, Brett Cox. They check out books and magazines to those who need them in study hall and in the library, and they reshelve the materials which have been returned. The librarians have different additional duties during each class period: first hour they check for overdue materials, second and fourth hours they work with speech students, third hour they put out new newspapers and periodicals, and eighth hour they close down the day's operation. Without these cheery, helpful individuals, library service would come to an immediate standstill. Front: Sheri Mason, Barb Brown, Gina Buhlig, Darcy Wade, Miss Jud, Crystal Nichols. Members work together to improve the school in many ways. The council’s first responsibility of the year was Homecoming. It established the theme ( Catch that Wildcat Spirit ), named a grand marshal (Amos Greenwood), sponsored a movie (Cat Ballou), arranged skits for the Homecoming pep rally, organized the parade, got a band ( Midnight Riders ), worked a ticket schedule at the dance, and cleaned up after all was over. The council sponsored something new this year — a one-day student exchange with Carrollton High School. Some Carrollton students came to our school for the day while some Winchester students went to Carrollton. It was fun. The council is also responsible for Purple and Gold Week every year — a week of ingenious costumes and general hilarity, a i break in the long weeks at the end of winter. 1 At the end of October, our sponsor, Mrs. Elmer, moved away. She had dedicated much of her time in the past years to working I with the Student Council, and she is missed by all. Paula Kaufmann I From left1. Todd Litrlc. Chris Hubbert. Seriously, we did learn many important things like how to suffer through income tax, what we could and couldn’t do on our jobs, and other things. I hope you like it. If you do, all our hard work will have been worthwhile. It has really been a busy year. When Mrs. Franseen asked me this time last year to be editor, I thought for a while; then I decided it would be fun, so I told her I would do it. I didn't realize then how little I knew about the million things that have to be done to put together a yearbook. The first major thing we did was to work on the planning board to figure out what we wanted on each page. I think I rearranged that thing at least ten times! It was so frustrating (and it will be a miracle if everything lands on the page where it was supposed to be). The first deadline wasn't too much of a panic, but the ones following sure were. A few of us spent a lot of long days in Room 4 — also some boring Saturdays. We probably gained ten pounds apiece on pop and chips and other assorted goodies, including Eric's birthday cake. Many thanks to Mrs. Franseen, our dedicated slave-driver. I also want to thank my staff for an overall super job. Eric Thomas handled the business side of the production, including the ad layouts, like a pro. Tina Sanders arranged all of the picture-taking, and worked like a trooper. Sandy Brackett and Sonya Summers were fantastic ad sellers in Winchester, and Sandy also has a great eye for details and a helpful memory for how we did that last time. Tracy Virgin and Marie Renner were great pizza sellers. Lisa Scott and Lisa Lashmett had some crazy times at the back table, but they usually came through during the hour of need. We also owe a lot to Michelle Monin, who came in to get us through every deadline. She was a marvelous help. Well, I guess that pretty well describes the year. Hope you enjoy the 1982 WILDCAT as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Thanks for supporting the yearbook.
