First, we have Virgil Coughlin, superintendent of Scott County District 1. He has many decisions to make, like if it snows should school go on? Then there's Rex Eddy, principal of WHS. I'm sure you've seen him at one time or another in the halls, keeping a watchful eye on all the students. Of course, we have a Board of Education. This picture shows Mr. Coughlin standing at left, with Gary Hurrelbrink on his left; then clockwise they are Dee Bell, Jacqueline Hanback, Bob Brown, Katherine Taylor (board secretary), Jane Hatcher, Don Pence, and Elmer Suttles. This year we had a change in the high school office. Mrs. Greer, wife of Mr. Max Greer, became our new secretary. Mrs. Summers retired, with a little farewell party from the WHS faculty and friends. 4 Speaking of secretaries, the ones at the superintendent's office are Evelyn Haggard, Geraldine McGuire, and Tammy Woosley. It takes three to keep track of all the paper work for the district. Just think what would happen if we didn’t have bus drivers like Ivan Me Dade, Amos Greenwood, Betsy Krueger, David Deal, Sharon McLaughlin, Henry Krueger, Bonnie Summers, David Daniels, Geraldine McGuire, Clarence Sheppard and Art Capps. (Mr. Capps is also bus mechanic, and in charge of buses). If they weren't around to bring us to school and take us home safely, we wouldn't be able to make it to our nice school, which is kept neat and tidy by WHS custodians Everett Tankersley and Amos Greenwood. Around lunch time I'm sure a lot of people get hungry. If it wasn't for Jessie Campbell, Mildred Scott, Helen Tankersley, and Virginia Blackburn, our cooks, there just wouldn't be any of that good food down at the cafeteria. All these people — plus the teachers — are needed just to get us educated. And don't forget one important group that we couldn't picture — the taxpayers, which include your own parents. It's all right, though — we're worth it. Reginia Booth It’s A Heartache RIGHT. Carolyn Dolen, editor-in-chief of the Wildcat; Monte Smith, class pages supervisor; Jana Cockerill, business manager. With its sponsor, Mrs. Elmer, it is also responsible for a lot of happenings. For instance, at Homecoming the Council selects the theme, organizes the parade, arranges for float judges and sets judging standards, awards the prizes, and selects the Grand Marshal. They make all arrangements for the dance, supervise the selection of the queen and attendants, and oversee the coronation practice. They take care of the bonfire, including notifying the Fire Department. During that long stretch between Christmas and Easter, the Council breaks up the monotony with Purple and Gold Week. They decide on the special days (this year they were Sadie Hawkins Day, Fifties Day, Toga Day, Backward Day, and Purple and Gold Hat day), arrange assemblies, give the prizes, and try to keep the faculty happy during the general uproar. They do everything for the dance — get the band, provide chaperons, bouncers, ticket takers, and the M.C., and clean up after the whole thing. Amusing things (like Bronya and Rhonda blowing bubbles on Mr. Greers head) almost never happen in the library. Some slight mishaps may occur (like Kelly getting hit in the b-tt with the projector screen by Miss Jud, or Crystal dropping the magazines all over just because the box-bottom busted, or Mr. Eddy walking in when Bruce had a pom-pon on his head), but most library functions are matters of high seriousness and great importance (like six people holding Darcy upside down while Miss Jud stapled her pants leg together). Some subjects were as hard as a rock, like that one up on the square with the plaque marking the spot where the old courthouse once stood, and where Lincoln once spoke. There were a lot of fun times, too. Remember everybody heading for the Winchester Bowl for dinner and always after games. Seeing who could climb the water tower and leave their class year was also a big thing . . . . . . but if you got caught, you got a free trip to the courthouse — the new one. Who would've thought there would be so much practice, practice, practice? In my sleep I hear Miss Malmstedt saving, One more time! Smile! Now do it like you mean it! So many things to remember — keep your arms straight — Yell! be sharp. Sometimes it's a strain — tempers flare and the tears flow — but we get it all out in the open and peace reigns again. To make the whole thing work, we have to be a unit — and mostly we are. We get to be friends — closer than most, 1 think. We are conscious that we have a -esponsibility — people judge the school by us, a lot of the time, and we have to keep up the spirit at our school. Doesn't always work, of course — and when the kids don't respond, it really hurts. I wish everyone could experience the feeling of being out there leading a cheer. My whole year revolves around it. — A Happy Cheerleader RIGHT: Varsity cheer- leaders F.llen Lashmett, Teri Moore, Karen F.ddinger, Shari McLaughlin (mascot), Kelly Gant. Sonnie Peak, Jamie Slagle. The Pom-ettes” performed at two pep rallies and at four home basketball games. At the Glenwood game they did a routine to 'Don't Bring Me Down”; at the Barry game, to the beat of ' Knock on Wood”; at one Routt game to the tune of Right Back Where We Started From ; and at the other to Greased Lightning. A lot of hard work went into these routines, which were made up by members of the squad. Since this was the squad's First year, they didn't get to perform very much. But whenever they did perform, they were well received by the fans. These girls not only learn how to work together as a team, but also how to get along with others, how to take constructive criticism, and most of all how to smile through anything. We played a double-header with Calhoun, who was leading the conference with a 5-1 record. We were 4-2, and had to take both games to win the conference championship. The girls played extremely well, and won the first game 9-3- They just kept getting better as the night went on, and won the second game 17-5 in five innings. The Cats were the Western Illinois Valley Conference champions with a perfect 5-0 record. The Cats also captured second place in the Winchester Invitational Tournament and finished the season by dropping a 54-52 decision to Pittsfield in the Regional finals. The Wildcats will lose the services of seniors Kenny Davis, Bruce Jefferson, Brad Virgin, Mike Wisdom, and Mike Hurrelbrink, but five lettermen will return next year, including leading scorer Leo Anslyn. 82 Top left: Freshman Coach Bill Reed, Varsity Coach Bob Moore, Junior Varsity Coach Kevin Roth. The Frosh-Soph-JV basketball team posted a final mark of 18 and 8, and took the consolation championship at the Beardstown frosh-soph tournament. Coach Roth says the team wasn’t flashy this year, but the nights we were good, we were really good. Of course, when we were off, we were terrible. But the boys really tried, and always gave it their best. Dick Coon received the only JV award — the trophy for freethrow shooting (67%). The freshman basketball team also had a successful season, with 15 wins and 8 losses, and two third-place finishes in area tournaments. Throughout the year, the team was paced in scoring and rebounding by Big Mike Brown and Peter Peak, and by Todd Little in free-throws. Little won the frosh free-throw award with his record of 64%. Honors also went to Big Mike Brown who was picked by his teammates as the most valuable player. Coach Reed has asked the Wildcat to include his very sincere apology to Kirby Lawson, who was not given recognition at the winter sports banquet. Be True To Your School People who come to the Winchester tournament for the first time — especially if it s the last night, when Winchester is playing for the championship — are always astonished to see what the tournament means to Winchester people. When there is no more standing room, and people are twenty deep around the doors, the fans keep right on coming in. They know that if they can't see the game, they can enjoy the good food and talking to their friends. For fifty -eight years, Winchester parents have come to stand (without pay, mind you) in a steamy kitchen or behind the popcorn machine or the coke machine or the candy counter — or off in a dreary corner with the coat check, or marking the backs of hands in the cold — to support the team and the band and the school. We ca t imagine Winchester without the tournament. Can you' Scenes from the 1980 tournament — FAR LEFT: Teri Moore and the other cheerleaders take a card-break in the shower. We did it seems to sum it all up. After we lost the conference and hit an emotional slump, we needed to get up for the regionals — and we did it. When we played a tall Brussels team and had to use a new defensive style, we did it. When we played Carrollton for the regional championship, we needed to develop a new offense and defense — and we did it. We did it with a little help and a lot of guts. The girls kept their spirits up, helped each other over some rough spots, and reaped the rewards they deserved. For the first time in twenty-six years, a Winchester team brought home a sectional trophy and the girls can proudly say, We did it. Coach Daley Below, left: Cindy Fryman. Below, right: Varsity. Running Against The Wind We didn't start out blowing everyone away; we tried to build for conference and shoot for district. We have done that for two years, and it has worked well. Last year we were first in the conference, and we successfully defended our title this year; last year we were fourth in the district, and we moved up to third. We had no seniors, but the juniors took over and the sophomores picked up the slack. This is the best group of girls I have ever coached, and 1 can't see what can stop us next year.
