THE SENIOR CLASS OF WINCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY-TWO Did You Know? To Mrs. Rodney Bell, formerly Priscilla Mann of this city now living in Centerville, Tennessee, goes the credit of writing the words of our school song. It was in 1938 that Priscilla’s song was selected from many others to be the loyalty song of Win-Co-Hi. LOYALTY TO WIN-CO-HI Cheer, cheer for old Win-Co-Hi Raise up the banner; Our motto: Do or Die. While our players fight their best, We’ll always back them, They’ll do the rest. They’ll never falter, they’ll never fail, Them, as the victors, we’ll always hail.’ We’ll always loyal be to Win-Co Cheer for dear Win-Co-Hi. Class History September 7, 1948, was a big event in the lives of seventy-nine Freshmen as we entered Winchester High School for the first time. With Mr. Stoneking, our advisor, we elected the following officers: Van McCullough, President; Donald Hoots, Vice-President; Howard Brinker, Secretary; Carl Burns, Treasurer. Van and Carl represented our class in the Student Council. When 1949 rolled around we entered high school, very sure of ourselves now as “silly Sophomores. Our class advisors, Miss Louise Nantz and Mr. Dale Pittenger, helped us elect our class officers. They were: Van McCullough, President; Carl Burns, Vice-President; Donald Hoots, Secretary; Bill Jasper, Treasurer. Van, Phyllis Peters, and Johnny Blair were our representatives for Student Council. Then came the busy year of 1950 when we enrolled as Juniors. Our class officers were: Glenna Glossop, President; Van McCullough, Vice-President; Donald Hoots, Secretary; David Means, Treasurer. Our Student Council members were Sue Harper, Grace Young, David Means, and Don Gregory. We had a successful year on our magazine sales and succeeded in setting a new record. We worked very hard on our play June Dawn which proved successful. Then in November the day we had been waiting for came at last; our class rings arrived. Finally, our Junior-Senior Prom brought this eventful year to a close. In 51 we enrolled in our last year of high school. Miss Nantz and Mr. Pittenger our advisors assisted us in electing our officers who were: Don Gregory, President; Suzann Sanderson, Vice-President; Carolyn Dobson, Secretary; David Means, Treasurer. Our representatives in Student Council were Don Gregory, Virginia Schofield, Carl Burns, Bill Jasper, and Johnny Blair. Phyllis Peters, a member of our class was elected 1951 Homecoming Queen. The Senior play Meet Corliss Archer was very successful. The Senior trip, baccalaureate, class night, and commencement brought our high school days to a close. 28 Junior Senior Prom THE GRAND MARCH OF THE 1951 JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM The theme of the prom was “Stardust ; therefore the gymnasium was beautifully decorated in blue and silver. Charles Rodgers orchestra was engaged to play for the evening. Refreshments were served from the punch table placed at one end of thae gymnasium. After dancing, watching the floor show, the coronation of the king and queen, and eating everyone agreed that this was a wonderful prom. KING AND OUEEN Dean Daniel and Reta Robinson “Having a wonderful time' , says Barbara Runyon and Joyce Campbell. 29 .... THE BABY SITTER On November 16, 1951, the Junior Class of Win-Co-Hi presented “The Baby Sitter’ to a large audience who seemed to enjoy the play very much. The plot centered around the baby sitter, Carrie, who had the problem of most baby sitters, that of getting the little monster to go to bed without making a total wreck of the house. This proved to be a hard task, involving complications with the brat’s parents, and with the parents of Bob, Carrie’s boy friend. These difficulties were finally worked out and Carrie received the credit she deserved for being a patient baby sitter. CAST Bob, who breaks a date.................. It had a complete new group of majorettes, with the exception of Joyce Campbell, who was made drum major, and many new Freshman members, who made up half of the band. The director, Mr. Willard Burdeau, resigned because of ill health the first of February and was replaced by Mr. Thomas Springer. The activities of the band were many and varied. It participated in the Armistice Day parade, and marched on the field at two football games including the Homecoming game. On October 30th the band made a short concert tour to two of the Scott County grade schools. Alsey and Manchester, where it presented programs. The band gave concerts on the square for both the Woman’s Club Burgoo and the Chamber of Commerce’s “Flying Saucer Day’’. A small band was organized to furnish music for the Junior play. This group included: Joy Coultas, Sue Coultas, Dorothy Smith, Sue Harper, Lloyd Summers, Stephen Redshaw, Kathleen Hester, Joyce Evans, Bruce Little, Fred Stice, Mark Edwards, John Blair, Charles Butzback, and Donald Nelson. The band was represented at the All-State Music Activities on the University of Illinois campus, November 24th and 25th by Joy Coultas, Sue Harper, and Charles Butzback. After three postponements, due to bad weather, the Guy Faul Corn Day was finally held on December 5, 1951. The farmers in this district had been solicited a few days before, so on this day the students went out in trucks to collect the corn. Several bus loads of students also went out and picked up corn that had been left in the fields which the farmers had donated. All this corn was sold to the Alsey Elevator, which had offered the highest price per bushel.' The total amount raised from the sale of corn and contributions of money from townspeople was $ 1,121. With this money three new instruments were purchased and all the school owned instruments repaired. Eighteen new uniforms, a director’s uniform, and a majorette uniform were bought. This year a new lesson program was instituted whereby each band member was required to take one lesson a week. The band participated with the Bluffs band in a Scott County Music Festival that was held in March. Several band members entered the district contest this spring with solos and ensembles. The members make money by selling hot dogs at home football games, working in the refreshment stand during the tournament, and sponsoring a dance in the spring. Members earn points by participating in sports and following health rules. Awards are given to the members at the end of the year for acquiring a specified number of points. Girls with the highest points will go to camp this summer. 55 Homecoming Celebration T i As in the preceding years, the Student Council sponsored the Homecoming of 1951 with Mr. Goodin acting as advisor. On Thursday night at 7:30, the 1951 Homecoming started its festivities with a large bonfire for which the F reshmen supplied the fuel. The cheerleaders started the evening off by leading several enthusiastic yells. The snake dance then paraded downtown and through some of the stores. F riday night, November 2nd, at 7:45, the band and the majorettes marched, despite the cold weather, at the opening of the homecoming game with Jerseyvilie as the rival. Behind the band, one convertible carried the five candidates for queen and another carried several of the 1950 alumni football players. The game started at 8:00 and when 10:05 at last arrived the triumphant Winchester High School students assembled enthusiastically in the gymnasium to await the cornation of the Homecoming queen. At last when suspense had reached its peak Phyllis Peters was crowned 1951 Homecoming queen by the 1950 queen, Geraldine Garrison. Phyllis was nominated by the Senior Class and elected by the student body. The queen’s four attendants were: Suzann Sanderson and Glenna Glossop, Seniors; Jeanne Zachary and Donna Weder, Juniors. All of the girls were presented with wrist corsages while Phyllis also received a bouquet of golden chrysanthemums. The Student Council is to be commended for the excellent work they did toward making the 1951 Homecoming a success. The gymnasium was decorated with the school colors, purple and gold. ALLAH. The school also now has a fifteen game winning streak over a period of two years. The boys received recognition from surrounding schools and newspapers for their good sportsmanship as well as their football achievements. The Wildcats opened the season by defeating IVIt. Sterling in a non-conference game with a score of 35-7 on September 14th. This gave the players more confidence and school spirit which served them well the rest of the season and enabled them to run up eight straight victories with no defeats. The team opened the defense of its Illinois Valley Crown on September 28th by topping Pleasant Hill 13-0. On F riday October 5th, the Wildcats downed a tough enemy, the Greenfield Tigers, by a score of 38-13. The Tigers put up a good fight making two touchdowns but they did not have the Winchester team spirit. All thirty-three of our players participated in this game. On October 12th Winchester won the eleventh straight game at the expense of the Carrollton Hawks. The smaller Winchester players with their savage tackling, crashing blocks, and clever running stopped the big boys from Carrollton 19-0. On October 18th the Wildcats defeated White Hall by a score of 27-6. In this game many of the Junior Varsity players saw action in the last three quarters which gave them experience for next year. The team cracked through another strong barrier October 26th by undermining the Roodhouse Railroaders to the tune of 27-13. The Wildcats conquered Jerscyville November 2nd by a score of 37-20. Once again a ha rd-charging line payed the way for the driving backs to score. Winchester ended the season by stopping Pittsfield 6-0, winning the Illinois Valley Conference for the second straight year, and giving Win-Co-Hi its first unbeaten record in its history. The lettermen fclected Carl Burns as captain of the record-smashing 195 1 football team. Don Lashmet received the honor of being chosen on the little all-state squad for the 1 95 1 season. The success of the team goes not only to the players but also to the excellent coaching and training received from Mr. Posey and Mr. Wilson, the support of the students, and backing of football fans. 59 Halfback, John Blair Halfback, Don Hoots Right End, Joe O’Donnell Quarterback, Don Lashmet 60 Right End, Bruce Little Left End, David Means Right Tackle, Jim Rutherford wm 61 Center, Edward Smith Left End, John Shive Basketball SEATED: Left to Right; Harold Jefferson, Donald Biglcy, George Murphy, Pat Lashmct. The Wildcats received fifth place in the Illinois Valley Conference. The Wildcats were in two scheduled tournaments. In the Holiday Tournament at Hannibal, Missouri, Winchester lost to Hannibal in an overtime game. This year only fifteen schools were entered in the Winchester Invitational Tournament. Also for the first time the opportunity was given for the losers of the first round games to play again for ninth place. The Wildcats were rated fourth, and they more than lived up to their rating by winning the first place trophy. They defeated Roodhouse, Waverly, White Hall, and then bumped off Griggsville 52-50 in the finals. Five of the first ten players were Seniors. The Wildcats also entered the State Regional Tournament at Pittsfield. The second team won eight and lost eight games during the season.
