Through the extracurricular activities and their projects at Winchester High School, students have the opportunity to develop their talents and learn the value of cooperation. Some of these organizations are: ANNUAL STAFF—The goal of the Annual Staff was to produce an outstanding yearbook that every- one would treasure. They accomplished this by working hard and spending a great deal of time in the preparation of the book. STUDENT COUNCIL—The student governing body planned the Homecoming ceremonies and had charge of the Christmas gift exchange. PEP CLUB— EAGLES! EAGLES! EAGLES!” was the cry of the Pep Club as it backed the team at the games and cheered them on to victory. They sponsored the potluck supper, a highlight of the year, for the Football Champs. GLEE CLUBS--Among the activities of the Glee Clubs was the County Choral Music Festival at Oskaloosa last fall. The Girls’ Glee Club took a number to the District Contest at Lawrence. MIXED CHORUS—The Christmas program and District Contest were the main activities of this group. BAND--The band marched in two Band Days this year: One at K.U. and the other at K-State. A concert was an achievement of the second semester. Y-TEENS--Caroling at Christmas time was one of the many activities of the Y-Teens. Baby- sitting at P.T. A. was a service provided by the girls. They also did several world fellowship projects during the year. LETTERMEN'S CLUB--The Lettermen's Club, a new organization this year, furnished the football field with field markers. It also helped entertain the community by sponsoring several full-length movies. SCIENCE CLUB—The Science Club kept busy with various projects. The members attended meetings of the Junior Academy of Science regularly during the year. the 24 LEFT TO RIGHT: Bill Reynolds, Joan Baker, Shirley Noll, Jerry Coppinger, Mary Huston, Tom Stevens. During the half-time of the Winchester versus Oskaloosa football game which was held October 12, Rose Curry, the 1961 Homecoming Queen, presented this year's queen, Shirley Noll, and her attendants, Joan Baker and Mary Huston, with corsages. Following the game a dance was held which began with the crowning ceremonies. Shirley was crowned by Jerry Coppinger who in turn was presented with a football. Vicky Brady was crown bearer; Mike Filbert was football caddy. The theme of the dance was Moon River. Donald and Ronald White drew the mural used in the decoration. The mural, done in pastels, pictured a river scene. The Homecoming activities were attended by many students, alumni, and friends of Winchester High School. We chose these officers: President, Robert Milroy; Vice President, Bill Daniels; Secretary, Shirley Noll; Treasurer, Joan Baker; and Student Council Representative, Mary Huston. Our sponsors were Mr. Farr and Mr. Cozad. Highlights of our freshman year were initiation and a doughnut sale. The following people left our class that year: Mike Lindsay, Malcolm Miskimon, Kay Towles, Wesley Miller, and Ethel Culp. In the fall of 1960, Carol Noel arid Linda Miskimon joined us, bringing our enrollment to twenty-four. The class officers were President, Tom Stevens; Vice President, Mary Huston; Secretary, Kay Baker; Treasurer, Carol Noel; and Student Council Representative, Shirley Noll. The sponsors were Mrs. Ehlers and Mr. Farr. Marilyn Maxwell entered our class the second semester. We were honored to have Tom Stevens on the basketball team which won the county tournament. The following people left our class: Beth Brammell, Mary Dean Perkins, and Linda Miskimon. We entered our junior year with an enrollment of twenty-five, including Marilyn Cummings, who transferred from Valley Falls. The class officers were President, Shirley Noll; Vice President, Jerry Coppinger; Secretary, Edith Harnish; Treasurer, Bill Reynolds; and Student Council Representative, Bill Daniels. Jim Penuel joined our class during the year. This was a busy year. We ordered our class rings in the fall and received them shortly before Christmas vacation. We presented Father Knows Best on April 17. Moonlight and Roses was the theme of the Junior-Senior Banquet held on April 28. Marilyn Maxwell, Judy Jones, Joan Baker, Mary Huston, and Beverly Domann were members of the girls' championship basketball team. At the end of the year we lost Marilyn Maxwell, Marilyn Cummings, and Tom Broddle. The sponsors were Mrs. Ehlers and Mr. Thompson. Finally, we reached our senior year. The class of 1963 consisted of twenty members. The class officers were President, Bill Reynolds; Vice President, Robert Milroy; Secretary, Joan Baker; Treasurer, Tom Stevens; and Student Council Representative, Mary Huston. Early in September the senior pictures were taken in Topeka at Wichers Por- trait Studio. We presented The Egg and I as a class play. Bill Daniels transferred to Lansing for the second semester. Shirley Noll and Jerry Coppinger reigned asKingand Queen of the homecoming ceremonies. Their attendants were Joan Baker and Bill Reynolds, and Mary Huston and Tom Stevens. Bill Reynolds, Jerry Coppinger, Robert Milroy, Tom Stevens, Tom Kneen, LeRoy Gardner, and Bill Daniels played on the County Championship Football Team. LidJJ l rojihecy Sam Youngman, a 1988 graduate, has returned from the Alumni Banquet. It has been twenty-five years since the class of 1963 graduated. Hi, Mom! Hello, Sam. Enjoy the banquet? Positively! Everyone was there; even the seniors of '63. What's so wonderful about the seniors of '63? Well! They're all in the news! Really! What makes them so newsworthy? Hm—We'll start with Tom Kneen and Edith Harnish. Tom is a big Hollywood producer and has given movies a cultural aspect by using Shakesperian plays. Edith has almost put the television world out of business, starring as Lady Macbeth. Was Edith's friend Shirley Noll there? Yes! Shirley, the lady astronaut, recently came back to Winchester after being the first Earthwoman to arrive on Pluto.” Oh my! She must like to travel. Shirley came with Carol Noel, who is training wild zebras for moon riding. Carol has just won the Nobel prize in literature for her book Moods of a Zebra. Carol said Jim Penuel is known as the greatest physicist since Archimedes. Jim developed Peanut's principle, which gives me so much trouble in physics. Jim explained it to us boys tonight. You actually had a chance to talk to him? Yes! I also talked to LeRoy Gardner. According to LeRoy, jet mechanics is very profitable. He's teaching it to the Martians in hope of revolutionizing them from the auto age. They donT know what they are missing. J.B. Clockerfeller, Beverly Domann's hsuband, came in a 1988 Cadillac Whirly-bird. Beverly met him while in New York learning to be a beatnik. Whom did you sit near? Jerry Coppinger and Kay Baker. Jerry’s doing pretty well as coach at the University of Oklahoma. His team hasn't lost a game in ten years. Kay was appointed territorial governor of Russia which the U.S. purchased from Hungary for $75 million worth of hot dogs and potato chips. Donna Donner, formerly Donna Adams, sat opposite me. Donna was telling Judy Jones she was busy packing. Donna s husband was recently appointed missionary to the moon. Judy caused a lot of talk in India when she married her twenty-seventh husband. She became a Maharani when she chose the Maharaja of Khatmando as her third husband. Bill Reynolds sat at the head of our table. Bill is making millions of dollars with his invention of Charley Farmer, the machine that does the farm work while the farmer sits by a radar control board. Near Bill sat Anna Wistuba. Anna is drawing the blue prints for King Charles of England's new summer castle; her problem is combining modern and Roman architecture. Of course, she's the woman who drew the blue prints for the President's summer home. 'Leah Werst is the editor of the NEW YORK HERALD and has a syndicated column for the lovelorn in papers all over the United States. Who spoke tonight? 'Ruth Adams, head of Clark’s School of Business. Ruth is organizing a class in the techniques of sitting on the boss's knee. ® What was served? ’Python Stew! Janice Rogers married an Amazon head-hunter, and they're becoming famous for this stew. Janice has sold her recipe to all Paris and New York restaurants. Is it good? Sure is. After the banquet I heard Tom Stevens, the Chancellor of K.U. telling Joan Baker there was some disap- proval by K.U.'s faculty, when he appointed Mary Huston dean of home economics. Joan Baker is raising Texas long- horns in Alaska to feed the Eskimos. She is in Kansas this week investigating the possibilities of taking snakes to Alaska to control the rats. ® And speaking of Joan, Robert Milroy, the lawyer who prevented tax on rocket fuel, brought me home. My the class of '63 truly is a great class. 36 CUs Witt We, the Seniors of 1963, in 20 individual and distinct parts, about to pass from this sphere of scholastic endeavor in full possession of a bulging brain, well-trained memory, and almost superhuman understanding, do make and publish this, our last will and testament, hereby revok- ing all other wills or promises heretofore made as the thoughtless wish of an idle hour.
