Many electric and cable lines fell during the storm because of falling limbs and trees. The stores along Main Street prepared for Hurricane Gloria by taping their windows. Employees of McCabe ' s Energy Store repair the sign after the storm passed. Once in a blue moon a hurricane strikes the New England area, but this September Hurricane Gloria traveled the eastern coast. With winds of 80-85 mph, the storm struck many residents by surprise; however, some were excited by the arrival of Gloria. Many people predicted the intensity of the storm and took precautions. On the other hand, some fearless souls threw parties because school and many businesses were closed. Prior to the hurricane, stores were crowded with people stocking up on such necessities as water, batteries, and candles. Endless preparations were also made around the house as residents secured their patio furniture, brought in their plants, and taped windows to prevent shattering. Fortunately, the aftermath of Hurricane Gloria was not as bad as many had predicted. However, many streets and yards were covered with tree limbs, but luckily few houses sustained any damages. She also left an extensive power failure throughout much of Winchester which in some places was not restored until days after the storm had struck. The height of Gloria ' s force only lasted a couple of hours, but left a memorable event behind in the minds of all easterners. 17
