PepTideS In 1984, there were two pep rallies, to boost WHS spirit. The first rally was the traditional rally starting the Fall ’84 sports season. Everyone clapped for the Football team, screamed for Girls’ Soccer, mar¬ veled at the cutesy cheerleaders, and as usual, we were respectfully silent for the Golf team. However, there was a new twist to the pep rally which preceded the Thanksgiving Day game. Red balloons were on sale for 50 f, and could be pur¬ chased as a gift for a friend. The sale of these balloons served many purposes; the abundancy of the balloons was a clear demonstration of Sachem Spirit, the pro¬ ceeds of the sale went to the Student Union, and the balloons themselves were a unique way to demonstrate friendships. One might even say that the munchkin voices (resulting from several students in¬ haling helium) were beneficial for their entertainment value! Getting into the Sachem Spirit, these freshman really enjoy the pep rally. Janice Coakley and Kathleen McGillicuddy, not wanting to get carried away by their balloons, cling tightly to their symbols of Sachem Spirit. 28 Pep Rallies

WHS BND IS PGhCH BOWL BOUND On the chilly morning of December 28, 1984 approximately 200 WHS Band Mem¬ bers and chaperones embarked from Bos¬ ton’s Logan airport — Peach Bowl Bound. The 75° Atlanta proved to be an exciting treat. The endless hours of prac¬ tice and the months of fundraising finally paid off with this ’chance of a lifetime ' — to participate in the Peach Bowl Festivi¬ ties. Upon landing (in the 2nd largest airport in the world) no time was wasted, rather than settling down in the classy Atlanta Sheraton, a practice was held in The Geor¬ gia Tech Stadium. The band competed with 19 other bands from all over the country, participating in a field and parade competition. The Band did superbly win¬ ning 3rd place in the field and 2nd in the parade competitions. On the less pres¬ sured side, the band was privileged to par¬ ticipate in the Peach Bowl pregame and Vz time shows. The trip was not only meant for com¬ peting; the band members toured the city, visited Stone Mountain and experienced The Varsity — the largest fast food place in the world. The band nerds (as they call them¬ selves) were not at all phased by the pres¬ sures put upon them and burned off their anxiety dancing to the music from Scott Kessel’s sound system, and by getting baked in the sunshine. Unfortunately 3 unsuspecting band members happened to get mugged — (however the mishap didn’t scare any party-animal band mem¬ bers into putting away their mugs). The 4 days passed quickly, the band finally watched Purdue and Virginia battle at the Peach Bowl game. It was New Years Eve and the band members arrived at Logan Airport with Peach Bowl memo¬ ries stored away in their minds. The WHS band members and all those involved, de¬ serve thanks for once again bringing pride to our town, and making WHS a step above the rest. The WHS Band won third place in the field competi¬ tion and is seen here in their Sweet Georgia Brown” formation. Is that grace which the WHS Tumblettes show as they practice a pyramid? Those drummer boys — Mike Blasi, Scott Kessel and Gary Rogers — sure are cool?! 30 Peach Bowl
