Dance, Dance, Dance! 9 G o n S h o w Where are the strawberries? And you think this is funny? 10 Zinc strikes again! The first few acts of the Gong show ran as smoothly as could be expected until disaster struck when G.T.O., doing their rendition of “Don ' t Go Breaking My Heart , found themselves on stage without any music. The stage was soon converted into a shooting gallery with the per¬ formers as targets, and marshmallows along with an occasional egg as ammunition. Despite the danger the show continued with such acts as the riot-causing Zinc Alice, The Muppets, the Cream Machine, discoing werewolves, dancing eggs and Elvis Presley who won first prize. To many the show was a failure, a total monument to poor planning; to others it was an evening devoted to laughing with and at fellow classmates; yet to all it signified the beginning of the Beautification of the School and Grounds Week . Elvis! As expected, the Boy ' s Tennis team coasted through the Middlesex league finishing with a 12- 1 record while racking up impressive victories against rivals Wakefield and Lexington. Wrapping up a fourth consecutive League title, the Sachems prepared for the Eastern Mass Tournament. Winchester, last year ' s State Champs, made it to the Semi-finals, but lost to Needham by a 3-2 score. As far as the team members are concerned, Rhys Thomas, Dipak Khaund, Nick Julian and Paul Simmons will be sorely missed, considering the tremendous success they have enjoyed en- route to capturing the Middlesex, EMass, Mass, and New England Crowns. Boys ' Tennis 12 Girls ' Tennis The Girls ' Tennis team served the school well this year. They aced their opponents more often than not, ending with an 8-5 record. Under the guidance of Coach Harvey, the untried group came out winners against some of the toughest teams in the league. Libby White was the only returning Letter winner, but Beth Noble and other outstanding players showed great spirit and de¬ termination. By hard work and talent, the girls brought off their successful season. Memories include: Mrs. Taber ' s lemonade jug . . . Dixie Riddle cups . . . Lobster ' s match . . . Don ' t worry, it ' s only a little dent . . . Let ' s go out to dinner. First row: Diane Piantedose, Lisa Wilder, co-ca(3tain Beth Noble, co-captain Libby White, Maria Fitzgerald. Second row: Renee Skeehan, Lisa Mellili, Terry Bergin, Cathy Taber, Delaine Hudson, Mindy Melzar. Third row: Coach Harvey, Beth Kingsbury, Sallie Houllahan, Zeynep Taspinar, Veronica Karp, Linda Houllahan, Marissa Gullino, Lisa Lavey, Emily Gibson. 13 J Baseball The Baseball team had one of the most suc¬ cessful seasons in years. Finishing with a 12-6 record, the Sachems tied for second in the Mid¬ dlesex league and earned a spot in the State tourney. Led by tri-captains Don Allard, George Casey and Mark McGoldrick, explosive hitting and steady pitching turned around last year ' s 6-12 disaster. Casey ' s antics. Drive-ins, and Rick Wise? Best wishes to the departing seniors and good luck to next year ' s team and co-captains Kelly and Kath¬ leen. Many thanks to our two excellent coaches — Miss Rosazza and Mrs. Rufo. The track team took first places in 100, 220, 440, 880, mile, mile relay, 4 110 relay, pole vault, shot and discus, high hurtles, 330 low hurtles, in virtually every meet. The season saw six league champions. Brian O ' Connor for the shot put and discuss, Peter MacDonnell for the pole vault, Scott Farrar for the 100, Andy (Buzzard) Wilsack for the mile, and Charlie Larkin for the 400. Charlie set a new league record with a remarkable time of 49.6. Coaches Marshall and Kline saw many of their athletes place at the state meet. Charlie Larkin, the team leader, won the 440 at the states in a hard fought race. The 4 110 relay made up of Scott Farrar, Terry Cordova (STBC), Timmy Mor¬ gan, Mark O ' Neal took third. Scott Farrar took third in the 100 yard dash with a time of 10.2. Timmy Morgan, nabbed fourth place in the high hurdles. Brian O ' Connor, expected to take first in shot and disc had an off day, managing only sixth in both events. The highlight of the states was Peter McDonnell when he pole vaulted 12 feet, 6 inches, breaking the school record. Next year ' s track team is looking for help from upcoming seniors Ed Kirkpatrick, Scott Farrar, Andy Wilsack, and Jim Wilber. Underclassmen hopefuls are Ken Kirk and Donny MacMillan. 19 I Class Night The first of June was the beginning of the end; one of the last times the Class of 78 would be united. Class Night began with a buffet dinner in the cafeteria and for once, it didn ' t seem to be the WHS cafeteria food that had been part of noontime dining for the past three years. After everyone had their complete fill, the Seniors moved into the auditorium for a presentation by the class officers, and the yearbook dedication to Mr. Provinzano. Superlatives that purposely missed the yearbook were given to the recipients. The Academy award resulted in an impromptu performance by Elvis . Following the dedication and a warm acceptance speech by Mr. P., came the time to receive the long-awaited yearbooks. Looka this picture! and Will you sign my book? filled the air as the Class of ' 78 departed from the High School for the last time. 20 21 ► mi.-. Such activities have in¬ cluded an Oktoberfest, German Christmas carol¬ ling, German plays, and German lunch ex¬ cursions. The two German classes have been made inter¬ esting and fun thanks to our teacher Frau Austin. She has taught us many useful phrases such as “Nimm dein ' Hand von meinem Bein du haarige Affe (get your hand off my leg you hairy ape) and in answer to Wie geht ' s? (How ' s it going?) Wie eine Cans aber nicht so wackelig (like a goose but not so wiggly). Many of the songs she has taught us have also proved to come in handy such as Fin Prosit, the notorious beer drinking song.
