Under the leadership of co-captains Richie “Cunningham” DeConto and Brian “Ralph” Quinn the team reached for and came up with their best season since coach Joe Cantillon took over five years ago: Varsity 6 wins-3 losses, J.V. 8 wins-1 loss, Girls 4 wins-1 loss. (This was the first year girls competed separately as a team) This year’s team was the largest one in history, consisting of 38 members, two of which were freshman. Tri-captains elect Sam Card, Jan Oehm and Charlie Larkin have many spirited memories to live up to: Ahh, those 6:30 (or was it 7:15) am breakfasts. Pancakes anyone? French Toast is fine. Out for sundaes with the Happy Days gang, Hey Mr. C., where’s Kendall?” WE LEFT SPIKE BEHIND! Because Jim was so good, we gave both teams a 90 second head start — is that okay? “Hey Dad, it’s me — your son!” Pile on Sac, If it weren’t for Maria ... Don’t catch the Senna Syndrone! I’m a rabbit ... ! Mr. C.’s initiation into the mouse club ... It was a lot of fun and a lot was accomplished. J.V. placed third in the league meet, varsity placed fourth, and three girls placed in the top 30 in the state semi-finals, including Jan Oehm, who went on to win it all! Good luck to next year’s team. 142 MELROSE UPSET SEASON HIGHLIGHT • .. Xv ' 1 . ' V‘ ' ?■’X : :• 0! . ' ' V h - . v- rj J tl ' •■• I . .; ■ ' f. Ji- . . ■ . ., 3 . - ■• • AK . Libby White, Lisa Ulwick, co-captain Kim Perenick, co-captain Denise Driscoll, Patricia Welch, Leanne Fitzgerald. Second Row: Anne Cantillon, Susan Yavner, Kathy Pigott, Beth Noble, Liz Patrick, Liz Fuller, Coach Sexton. 144 Winchester’s 1976 Field hockey team led by co-captains Denise Driscoll and Kim Perenick did not have the winning season they had hoped for, but their record of 4-8-1 is not an indication of the hard work and spirit that went into the season. While this years team lacked experience (only two members had previously earned letters) they learned to work together as a team under the guidance of coaches Sexton and Rosazza. This was Ms. Sexton’s first year as coach and the team would like to thank her for her devotion and spirit. Memories include the upset of Melrose (who said we couldn’t do it?), breakfast at Libby’s and the pushy sophomores. Good luck to next year’s team and co-captains Kelly Evans and Liz Fuller. 145 SACHEMS SAVE SEASON When the football squad assembled for pre¬ season practice last fall, Coach Marshall and his assistant coaches, Johnson, Kline, Houghton and Berman, were confronted with the difficult task of molding a seasoned team from a large group of more or less inexperienced players. Only four lettermen had returned, and seven places left vacant by graduation had to be filled. Although the season’s overall record of three wins, five losses and two ties put them in sev¬ enth place in the Middlesex league, consolation can be taken in the fact that many under¬ classmen gained valuable experience, and all signs point to a much improved team for 1977. The Sachems were never out of any ball game, but, despite the fact that team spirit and a strong will to win prevailed throughout the season, the lack of experience often cost the Sachems in key situations. However, the season ended on the brightest of notes with a thrilling 26-18 upset win over traditional Thanksgiving Day rival, Woburn. Honors must be paid to the Sachems two fine co-captains, Chris Gill and Jim Covino, for their vigorous school spirit and outstanding play, which earned then both positions on the All- Middlesex League team. Bob Blasi, Mike Cala- rese and Donell Jones were also awarded Honor¬ able Mention to the team for their fine play throughout the season. Each game was a hard fought battle with the Sachems struggling until the final whistle. Their record of 3-5-2 is no real indication of the actual success they achieved on the playing field. The 1976 Winchester High School football team has a lot to be proud of. 146 STUN TANNERS 26 - 18 First Row (1. to r.) S. Campbell, D. Jones, R. Brock, M. Cavaretta, B. Blasi, M. Calarese, B. SACHEMS STREAK TO TOURNEY Before the season began none of the so-called experts included the Sachems in any of their lists of probable playoff teams. Were they ever wrong! The Sachems qualified for the State Tournament in style, destroying the Burlington Red Devils in the 15th game of the season by the score of 87-62. The victory was made even sweeter by the fact that Burlington was unde¬ feated and the number one ranked team in the entire state going into the game. The fact that the Sachems were so successful in the ' 76-77 season was no accident. The team just played good basketball for almost the entire season and won the games they had to, in¬ cluding four overtime thrillers. Tim Powers was named the Sachem Most Valuable Player by the Winchester Star for his exploits during the sea¬ son. Tim became a team leader during the ' 76-77 season, both defensively and offensively. He was often the team’s high scorer, but was probably more important on defense, where his quick hands often stripped bewildered opponents of the basketball. Center Bob McCabe developed into the player everyone knew he could be and was named the division one Star of the Week by The Boston Globe for his 18 points, 10 blocked shots, and nine rebounds in the Burlington game. Captains Don Allard and Donell Jones both had the good seasons that Coach Doc Wheeler ex¬ pected. Jim Burns combined a good jump shot with rebounding strength to play a big role in the season. Glen Mills came back from a pre-season injury a third of the way through the season and provided needed board strength and offensive punch. Rick Pearl, Scott Swanson, Bob Brosnan and John Waite all came through when called upon in tight situations. Before the season started Coach Doc Wheeler said that the Sachems would “be competitive and surprise a lot of people.” That now looks like the understatement of the year. First Row (1. to r.) R. Dexter YEAR, FUTURE LOOKS GOOD The girls basketball team had an exciting sea¬ son and showed much promise for next year as the team was primarily sophomores and juniors. Injuries to the senior members hampered the team in the beginning. However, the team man¬ aged to stay in almost all the games and many of this year’s losses were by four points or less. Coach Barbara Hollis is very optimistic about next year as she will field a very strong team with so many returning letter winners. Winches¬ ter should be one of the top two or three teams in the Middlesex League next year. Memories will include Linda’s press coverage, Kim’s red light, Coach’s in front, Holly’s 28 and the morning after. Good Luck to next year’s team. WINCHESTER WHIPS WOBURN TWICE While the 1976-1977 hockey season lacked in overall won-loss percentage, it made up for it with spirit and determination. Crippled by in¬ juries to sophomore Peter Mahoney, junior Mark Carzo, Bob Galante and Captain Jon Pettee, the team hit rough sledding through out the season ... but oh, did we put it to Woburn. Spirit, hustle, and a howling crowd boosted the Sach¬ ems to a sparkling 7-5 win over the Tanners as Hugo Lafauci’s last minute empty net goal iced the victory and touched off a hugh celebration. This year’s team was led by returning letter- men Mark McGoldrick, George Surabian, David Putnam, Jack Mclnnis, Jon Pettee, Chris Gill, Billy Mclean, and Cliff Falla. In the defensive ranks, Bobby Coppins, Ken Carlson, Ken Do- naghey, Mike Hill, and Mike Madigan all con¬ tributed as did Jackie Collins and Paul Mahoney at the forward positions. There were also two sophomores who played significant roles on this year’s team, Ricky Blanche and Hugo Lafauci. Frank Vozzela chipped in at goal. High “Low” lights of the season included Chris Gill’s booming slapshot at Stoneham Are¬ na, a game that ended with over a minute left on the clock in Lexington?, Monday practices, morning sprints, Harvard bound Jack Mclnnis, Billy Mclean’s complaining, Middlesex League All-star status for Cliff Falla and Mark McGoldrick, and finally alot of pride and confidence. RIGHT CHRIS? (Editors note: After this was written the Sach¬ ems played their final game of the season at home against Woburn and “put it to” the Tan¬ ners again, this time by the score of 4-3. The Sachems were led by Senior Bob Galante, who scored two goals in his best game of the year, and Cliff Falla who was again brilliant in goal. Not a bad way to end a season!) First Row (1. to r.) C. Roche, B. Quinn. Frank W. Kulesza 165 This year’s Winter Track Team, led by cap¬ tains John Roche and John Hogan, posted a commendable 4-4-1 record. Since many of the losses were not decided until the final event, many feel the record could have easily been 7-2. Only the Middlesex League Champions and defending Middlesex League Champions, Read¬ ing and Lexington, soundly beat the Sachems. Never the less the 4-4-1 record was the best record in recent years and was made possible by the largest team ever, with 50 or more people regularly filling the bus that brought the team to Lexington. Next year’s team should be even stronger with many outstanding juniors and sophomores re¬ turning, such as juniors Peter Costello, Kevin Consales, Brian O’Connor, who broke the exist¬ ing school record in the shot put by almost two feet and placed fifth in the state meet, and Charlie Larkin, who came within 2 10 of a sec¬ ond of the record for the 600 yard run, posted the second best time in the league, and contin¬ ued on to the state finals. Sophomores Andy Wilsak, Ed Kirkpatrick, Nicky Fitzgerald, Steve Perriello, and Scott Farrar turned in fine seasons and all went to the states, with Ferrah making the finals in his event. The team would like to thank Mr. Kline for all the faith, drive and 150’s that made the team what it was. 166 Dr. Mrs. Edward C. The Winchester Boy’s Gymnastics team had one of their best seasons with a league record of 3-2 and a 2-4 record in non-league meets. Tre¬ mendous improvement in team points from 60 to 84 over a twelve week period is attributed to a healthy team spirit and excellent individual ef¬ forts. Attitudes play one of the most important roles in sports. This year’s start promises to continue next year with experienced under¬ classmen and the return of lettermen. 169 GIRLS BREAK RECORDS 85 for an ice-cream, 90 . .. Pier 4? Thanks to the boys gymnastics team, it’s been real. In this 1977 season, the girls gymnastics team pulled together breaking all kinds of records. An 88, two 86’s and an 85 were the four top meet scores, the previous high score was a 78, set in 1976. It has truly been a team effort that brought about these record breaking scores and the final won-lost record of 11-2. Nancy and Cindy would like to thank the team for the tremendous job they did. Their chances at the title were lost when they were defeated by league rivals in very close dual meets, losing to teams twice their size. Despite the .500 season there were many outstanding performances by the Sachem swimmers this year. The medly relay team placed first in the Conferences as did Rich¬ ard Palumbo in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles. Tony Pollino was victorious in the one meter diving while Mark Vernaglia and Charlie Boyle placed second and sixth respectively. Mark’s and Charlie’s performances were even more impres¬ sive when one takes into account that neither had ever dove competitively before. Jeff Estab- rook captured third in the 100 yard breaststroke and David Blasi took third in the 100 yard back- stroke. Tony Pollino and Seth Goodman took third and sixth respectively in the 100 yard butterfly. Dave Cowgill and Peter Mafera also turned in fine performances, this being their first year of competitive swimming for WHS. The team also received great support from the many juniors and sophomores who will make up next year’s team. We’ll always remember ...
