The 1975 Winchester High School Football Team began the season with great optimism. The super season that it had hoped for, however, did not materi¬ alize. Injuries to key personnel — Co-Captains Mark Cullen and Don Ball — were a big factor. Losing some close, low-scoring games to Lexington and Stoneham. the Sachems marched on to a 4-5-0 record. This record is no real indication of the hard work and preparation that went into the season. The team takes along with it memories of the Belmont game, the sometimes in¬ vincible play of “Moon” Mullins and “Stallion” Stack- pole, and of course that rainy Saturday morning in Sharon, Massachusetts. 143 First Row (1. to r.) But Co-Captains Tom Waite and Todd Cronan, a powerful defense of Chris Morgan, Rick Mauger and Bill Schromm, and some good underclassmen turned the season for the better. I I This year’s Cross Country Team was the largest (28 members), and most inexperienced (21 new members) team in several years. The Varsity team, captained by Bill Andrews and Paul Bosselaers, compiled a 2-7 record, beating Lexington and arch rival Woburn in dual meets (and Stoneham and Watertown at the league meet). The J.V. team (including 6 girls) compiled a 5-4 record, and finished 2nd at the J.V. league meet. With co-captains-elect Brian Quinn and Rich DeConto, and 21 returning members next year, everyone is quite optimistic for continued improvement. Special recognition should go to Brian Quinn, who received honorable mention selection to the All-League Team, and to Jan Oehm, who (among other honors) finished 7th at the Girl’s All-State Meet. 150 FIELD HOCKEY The 1975 girls’ Field Hockey team got off to a good start, being undefeated for their first five games. The team was rusty at first, but Coach Rybicki showed them, “Dis is how ya do it.”, while Puff showed her “duff’, Kimba followed by shining moons and Magoo gave her imitation of “Jaa-cqueline!” After Knobe asked for “dco¬ nations for bumpa stickas”, Flan was heard to call Denise “the seive” and the. whole team went “Boing” while Dex said, “We have to win, we’ve got new kilts.” The season ended with the team having a record of 5-2-2, but all was not lost because Lev gained 10 new field hockey balls. 151 First Row( . to r.) Tri-captains Andy Stoeckle, Wayne Mills, and Dan Heffernan led the squad to victories over each league member, including a big 71-57 defeat of Lexington. The 16-4 log enabled the Sachems to make the Tech Tourney for only the third time in 7 years. Senior for¬ ward Kirk Swanson was a key factor in the Sachems’ strong showing, contributing important scoring binges when needed most. Both he and Stoeckle finished in the top ten scorers in the League. Mills rounded out the strong Sachem front court. Todd Cronan added expert ball-han¬ dling to the cause, while Heffernan had excellent outside shooting and ball-hawking defense. Fred Jones, Don Allard, and Glenn Mills came off the bench to contribute to the Sachems’ great season. 158 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL First Row: (1. to r.) Mgr. P. Hartnett, K. Noble, co-captain C. Though Coach Benton knew the team gave 100% of themselves, it wasn’t enough to compensate for the small number of people trying out for the team, which included only three returning letterman; John Calerese, John Mclssac, and Frank Smedley. Because of the small turnout, three weight classes were empty, making the team work very hard to make up for their losses. Still, indi¬ viduals did very well this year. It is better to change things than to complain. There are two functions of Action. The first is involvement in community projects such as painting Wedgemere Station to cover up graffitti, and organizing a fast in conjunction with Oxfam America to raise money for the world’s poor. The second function is to hold informative and controversial lectures on many modern issues. We’ve sponsored such speakers as Danny Schecter (the WBCN News Dissector), who spoke on the Portuguese Revolution; Paul Shannon on American Imperial¬ ism and Industry; and Faith Calhoun, a UFW representative who showed a farmworker film. We also heard speakers on Vietnam and the amnesty question, among others. The many dedicated members of Action have worked hard to inform people of controversial issues and to become involved in change. In general, they have striven to offer a positive alternative to the apathy which has engulfed so many people. 200 PHILOSOPHY CLUB “Objectivity is subjective.” “No, but subjectivity is objective.” The Philosophy Club meets irregularly as usual to discuss the question: “Is life supposed to be taken seriously?” So far, in order not to disrupt tradition, we have not only not found an answer, but have come up with another question: “If Monty Python and Woody Allen met The Ruling Class on The Holy Grail, who would care?” i ■ 201 CURTAIN AND CUE f 202 The theatre is empty.
