ABERJONA 1974 WINCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL WINCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS DEDICATION As an administrator you have helped us to ma¬ ture during our years here at W.H.S. You have been a significant influence in our lives. For your sincerity, inspiration, and patience. We, the Class of 1974, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Edward R. Burns. “Not armies, not nations, have advanced the race; but here and there, in the course of ages, an individ¬ ual has stood up and cast his shadow over the world. ” —E. H. When we entered high school many of us were apprehensive and found it difficult to stand on our own. We began to learn from one another how to accept the many new freedoms and responsibilities that were demanded of us. ijii iwr 9 Each year we spent together added new friendships to our lives and more moments of happiness to our memories. Together with our friends we faced disappointments, formed our goals, and shared our dreams and hopes. We thought these days would go on forever yet all too quickly it is time to leave. 15 We become disconsolate at the thought that it is almost time to go our separate ways yet we know that we will al¬ ways be together in our memories WILLIAM C. We will always remember our famous Hal¬ loween Party - “A MAKE-YOUR-OWN-PIZZA HALLOWEEN PARTY?!” Our meetings of eat¬ ing Italian cookies led us to the idea to have a Bake Sale for making money to — go out to eat!” “Buon Appetito!” To our brave soul of an advis¬ or, Mrs. Miller — “grazie.” To next year’s Italian SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club of 1973-74 has had few but very interesting activities. Our activities included viewing Miss Eisberg’s slides and a very non- Spanish Halloween party; the apple game prov¬ ing to be everyone’s favorite, (especially our guest appearance — P. T. Miller!) We went to a Spanish restaurant in Cambridge, cooked “churros con chocolate” at Sue Boodakian’s and viewed interesting slides of Macchu Pichu. It hasn’t been much, but it’s been great, thanks to Miss Eisberg and Miss Alvarez! 144 146 148 LES TROUBADORS “Je presente les Troubadors, qui sera chanter pour vous!” A group of about twenty French singers and other assorted instrumentalists who tour, entertaining all with their wonderful voices. Such big name places as Mamma Leone’s and the International Fair re¬ quested their talents. The halls of Mass General ech¬ oed with French Christmas caroles. Les Troubadors, despite the sometimes chaotic and frantic rehearsals, managed to come out on top! LOS COMPANEROS Flashy in color and lively in spirit, Los Com- paneros “opened the show” at the com¬ monwealth pier exhibition hall in Boston with their musical performance for the annual “World Celebration.” “Have mirambras, sombreros, maracos, gui- tars—will travel.”, and travel, we did, to Mama Leone’s famous Italian Restaurant. Then a Va¬ lentine’s performance at the Episcopal Church. April found us at the annual sixth grade supper at Washington School. We will remember many light-hearted times as we look back on this fun-filled year. 152 FRENCH CLUB Cet anne le Cercle Francaise etait unique. Between a proposal to get the shop area open on weekends, donkey basketball, and Campaigns to keep the school clean, Student Council members were kept very busy. With Vice-President Holly James telling those “wild” stories, Da¬ vid Robison’s willingness to argue with anyone on anything and Joe Quinn’s passion for taking his clothes off. President Michael Meagher had quite a time keeping the meetings down to business. The council, did however come up with some key solutions to the problems it faces. All in all, it was a very worthwhile year for the Student Council. YOUTH MARC Youth Marc is an organization devoted to working with mentally retarded children. Hallow¬ een parties, Easter egg hunts and bowling were ways in which this year’s members found they could bring happiness to these special children. To some people, the thought of giving up a Saturday afternoon might appear to be a real sacrifice, but to the members of Youth Marc, it’s a fantastic, rewarding, experience that gives them the satisfaction which comes only from helping others. 156 A.V. If you are able to think but are continuously misunderstood, then sit down and be ignored with the rest of us. As Jean-Paul Sartre once said, “Je ne suis pas un pederaste!” Under our energetic and exciting faculty advisor, Dr. Copeland, we exercise a brilliant influence entirely unfelt in the high school. Due to our incredible mental abilities, our members have become quite proficient at wasting valuable time in arguing ethics, prosthetics, and ex¬ istentialism. To pass the time between orgies and cat¬ naps, we have had lectures on the race-IQ controversy, Sartre, Einsteinian relativity, and B. F. Skinner, hoping to learn from these eminent artists of the mind to inspire us toward a brilliant future and to define for us the Meaning of Life. Failing that, there is always a career in computer maintenance. Row • le f 0 right; S. Milburn, R. Downs, J. Wells. Row 2; T. Moore. S. Holburt, .1. Enstead. B. McVicar, G. Zettler. Row 3; A. What do these mathematically inclinated cretins do at their secret organizational meetings? In between eating pi cookies, drinking punch and giving television interviews, they sometimes work out math problems. “Logs? Bases? Square Roots? What are they? . .. Looks like we resort to ‘sabotage’!” This is true. If we come in first, second or third, sweaters for everyone—Alright! ACTION 74 This group is a combination of the old Debate Club and a new club formed last year before the November elections. The Debate Club busied themselves by debat¬ ing such issues as the Equal Rights Amendment and discussing other important topics during their meetings. Action 74, the political and social action club, helped the Red Cross get volunteers for their blood program. Later the members decided to devote their energies toward aiding the Senior Citizens by working in the recreational department of the Continuing Care Unit and helping other Senior Citizens in the town. Under the strong and effective leadership of Mary Galante (President) and David A. Curtis (Vice-President), the Club was able to direct its abundant talents and enthusiasm (as ex¬ emplified in George Brooks’ oft-repeated suggestion, “Let’s burn down the school and kidnap Mr. Larocco!”) toward useful and constructive endeavors. They posted a solid 12-4 record and made the State Tourney, but all their loses came by one goal and lost the league title by a mere half game to Lexington whom they beat both times. It was, nevertheless, an exciting season filled with many memorable moments. Who could forget watch¬ ing Chip Whitman start a game and nearly score a goal, or Ron Vangell and his one man wrecking crew, the Melrose brawl, Steve M eahl’s hattrick, Tom Brennan’s award winning dive, or Joe Boom Boom Quinn display his spectacular soccer skills. John Friborg was selected as the league’s M.V.P. while Bob Bird and Eddie Shiang were also honored as first team all-league selections. This year’s cross country team has accom¬ plished an outstanding feat — the breaking of a three year losing streak. This was accom¬ plished by solid team and individual efforts, (not to mention the induction of Burlington into the Middlesex League). A lot of credit should go to all the members of the team, and especially to the varsity squad consisting of Tim Parker, Colin Mahon, Bruce West, Dave Trageser, Tom Stevens, Rich Coakley, Bill Reynolds, and Mike O’Leary. It was also the first time in many years that WHS sent a team to the Tourney. Tourney hopes were quickly ended however, when Everett stopped the Sachems 53-52 in the first round. Like the teams other losses it was a hard fought game undecided until the final buzzer. This year’s team had a loyal following of fans always ready to cheer the team to victory. The 20 point trouncing of Woburn to make us “No. 1”, Sandy Bigelow’s high scoring nights, Mike and Wayne’s fancy dribbling, Nate and Tim’s rebounding and “Z’s” subbing ability made the season one to re¬ member. 188 Home 47 72 56 72 77 49 42 56 83 76 64 55 62 69 64 53 56 54 63 43 52 Sharon Sharon Melrose Burlington Belmont Wakefield Lexington Watertown Stoneham Reading Woburn Melrose Burlington Belmont Wakefield Lexington Watertown Stoneham Reading Woburn Everett 89 Opponent 45 52 55 59 50 47 40 51 64 65 45 45 60 53 59 43 62 58 53 44 53 MIDDLESEX CHAMPS Mj| k mi VARSITY CLUB J. Still there are some who ask why Who want to know, who dare to try. Every now and then we meet that kind of man — Rod McKuen This section of the yearbook is dedicated to “Coach” Henry T. Knowlton who has given so much of himself and asked for so little in return. He has been an inspiration for so many of us. From the training room to the athletic fields, his spirit, wisdom and smile have won for him our love. 196 197 GYMNASTS 1st row. left to right: M. DelloRusso. B. West, P. Richmond, J. Lanigan, S. Miller. 198 This year was a disappointing year for the boys’ gymnastic team. The team lost several meets by very slim margins but they managed to end the season with a 5-8 record. The team was hampered by a lack of experience. There were only three seniors on the team, the two captains having been on the squad for three years. A large turnout of sophomores and the remaining juniors make the prospect for next year seem hopeful. 1st row, left to right: D. Trageser, W. Andrews, R. Tonello, D. Cronin, R. Fiore, J. Christiansen, T. Parker, B. Quinn. 2nd row: P. Bosselaer, C. Hayford, W. Harris, J. Rigney, A. Samoiloff, R. Mauger, P. Stackpole, S. Callahan, W. Dexter. 3rd row: D. Criscione, R. TRACK Belmont Watertown Burlington Wakefield Melrose Lexington Woburn Stoneham Reading 5 wins, 4 losses The Sachem Track Team posted a satis¬ fying 5-4 record ending up in fourth place in the tough Middlesex League. Coach Kline saw his team, composed almost en¬ tirely of returning Seniors, improve tremen¬ dously upon last year’s 1-8 record. Chip Roche broke the shotput record and John Friborg, co-captain David Burns, and the relay team narrowly missed setting three other records. The tracksters, however, did manage to break the school record for post¬ season celebrations. The team also found that Coach Kline’s bark is worse than his bite — most of the time. 20 ; Win 57 50 50 33 39 45 48 36 37 1st row, left to right: S. Fay, Co-captain J. McGrath, captain S. Johnis, J. Inexperience took a heavy toll on the squad as eight out of the thirteen varsity wrestlers were first year men. Lack of depth in several weight classes and insufficient mat time at the practices contributed to the problems encountered by the team. Despite the team’s record, however, there were several outstanding individ¬ uals that brightened up the season. Co¬ captain Paul Lee, the squad ' s leading scorer (9-2, 40 points), and co-captain Steve Johnis (10-3, 24 points) both quali¬ fied for the Massachusetts State Wres¬ tling Tournament. Joe Bussichella and sophomore John Calaresse also turned in fine records. The team looks to next year as a season of great promise. With ten letter- men returning, the squad, bolstered with a year of experience, should bring about a great improvement. 203 GO 3 o 1st row, left to right; A. Goodman. D. Holmes, tri-captains M. Under the direction of Coach Vin Palumbo and assistant Alan Eyden. the team compiled a remarkable 12-1 record; while also capturing the Western Conference of the Greater Boston Swimming League Championship title. Tri-captains Vin- nie Palumbo, Mike Corf, and Steve Armstrong topped a roster of highly competitive and exceptionally spirited swimmers, who as a whole broke all previous school records. The Sachems also faired very well in the post¬ season championships taking 5th in the Eastern Mass. Champs, 9th in the states, and 14th in the New Englands. 205 1st row, left to right: M. O’Leary, A. Murphy, T. Brennan, D. Brenton, D. Allard. Mgr, R. Sutherland. R. Coakley, Coach Stableford. missing: Mgr. H. McKenzie. PUCKSTERS 206 This year’s Sachem Hockey team, coached by Ted Kelley, met some stiff competition in the Middlesex League. Led by co-captains Kevin Pierce and Charlie Evans, the team ended the season with a 6- 10-2 record. The team’s scoring talents were found in Mark Siegfriedt, a league All-Star, with 27 points, Tom Brennan with 24 points and Charlie Evans with 20 points. Peter Sandford proved to be the best dancer on the team and Onion, the fastest on the steps. Weirce never went below 200 and O ' Leary’s and Coakly’s fondest memories will not include their encounters with the “po-tang” rope. 207 Home 2 4 5 7 2 0 2 1 1 0 1 4 1 2 3 2 4 1 Opponent 4 Woburn Lexington Belmont Watertown Burlington Wakefield Reading Stoneham Melrose Woburn Lexington Belmont Watertown Burlington Wakefield Reading Stoneham Melrose 209 It is over . . .
