Q W get V , t Strlctl Informal A tour through WHS would hardly seem worthwhile rf we drdn t stop to become better acquamted wrth those men and women who actually make the wheels go round We certarnly have been fortunate to have such outstand mg teachers for the past four years not only from the standpoint of their vus dom but also because they are all round human berngs It would be lm possnble to try and meet all of our faculty so we wxll mtroduce just 1 few Gomg first to the Wadlergh Buxldmg we meet Mrss Barley a real vet eran of WHS who got us started on our new adventure We encounter Morse who seems to be everywhere at once-teachmg speech or usmg hrs nn numerable talents IH presentlng any one of our excellent stage productlons In passlng by the office we look rn on Mr Bartlett prlncrpal of the Wadlergh Blliljllilf mu tluta C et your hotdogr IPPVI Dapper Dan What a lead Terrace tete a tele Whlrh mm had the Fnmf During school hours he may be found in his administrative or teaching capac- ity, but, after hours we are more likely to find Coach working out basketball or baseball strategy. We will go now up to the big building, and we are greeted by Mr. Grindle, our principal and friend. Here is Mr. Skerry who is not only -a master of hic, haec, hoc, but, also a true philosopher. And then we can't forget Miss Carroll, someone who definitely turns the ,wheels of WHS, not only as a coach but as an eager and enthusiastic leader of school ac- tivities. This year she and Mr. Fitts took over the job of directing the Vaude- ville, succeeding Mr. Hayward who for many years put forth all his efforts in this performance and also in support of the Athletic Association. Two of our English teachers must not be left out-Mr. Ulin and Mr. Keeney. Mr. Ulin, a sophomore instructor, deserves much credit as the capable advisor for the Aberjona. Mr. Keeney, with his innumerable C1ara's and George's, to- gether with Miss Bronson sponsors the National Honor Society Here we can meet only a few of the teachers who grace the halls of WHS but to them all the Class of 53 lifts its hat As a faculty they are tops' Many nooks znlprrwe the broth Keep lt under you-r bat Flunla or fail? National Thespian Society The National Thespian Society gives recognition to those Curtain and Cue members who have proved themselves outstanding in any form of dramatic art. Troupe 729 of Winchester holds two inductions a year. This year they were both held in the spring. A Thes- pian member must have earned at least ten points, each point representing ten hours of quality time as an actor, script girl, stage hand, comm-ittee member, or ofiicer in the Curtain and Cue. At the Student Council Convention early in the year, they put on an entertain- ing skit, A Pair of Lumzticf. Barging ahead to Christmas at WHS they pre- sented Song of Glory. Last, but far from the least, The Roman Kid was put on at the Massachusetts Drama Festival. All this took place amid club meetings' and theatre parties. The band added greatly to the pleasure of the fans at the football games with spirited music and stunts. Besides playing for the football games, the band entertained the teachers at the Middlesex County Teachers Convention at Swampscott, marched in the State Festival in Malden, played for graduation, marched in the Memorial Day Parade, and gave a fine Spring Concert. A few of the seniors who left this year had been playing for six years. Even though the band will miss the players it loses via gradua- tion, there are many more able musicians in the Junior High School to take their places I thc years to come, the band will continue to improve and remain an organization of which WHS can be yustly proud lx -. Through the tireless work, patience and ability of Mr. Fred Felmet the orchestra is continually increasing in size and talent. The first performance this year was made at the Christmas assembly where the orchestra played a group of Yuletide melodies. In january, the combined orchestras of Arlington and Winchester put on two concerts, playing such numbers -as Plink, Plank, Plunk, Gilbert and Sullivan melodies, selections from the opera Cori Fan Tuite and two marches. Several members of the orchestra took part in the annual All-State Con- cert, learning a great deal from this experience. Boys' Glee Club This year's Boys' Glee Club, under the capable direction of Miss Eleanor Anifantis, outdid itself. Headed by its oliicers, Phil Ives, President, Dominick Tofuri, Vice-President, and Don MacFeeley, Accompanist, it has participated actively in all major school events, displaying with pride its two excellent solo- ists, Brad Johnson and Bill Ross. In February the club sent Roy Lawson and Don MacFeeley to the Massachusetts All-State Chorus and climaxed a busy year with an excellent showing at the Spring Concert. This system is a method of acting in which the actor lives his part off-stage as well as on. It completely frustrates Pru- dence Mason CBecky Smithj, the visiting act- ress from Broadway, and baffles her Wall Street fiance, Arthur Scott, Jr. fjames Andrew Rob- ertsonb. Mr. Bach, the capable though eccen- tric Russian drama instructor at the Academy of Dramatic and Allied Arts, was skillfully por- trayed by john Swazey. This unpredictable character was fazed by nothing but the dom- ineering Dean of Women CShirley Chapmanb. Jerry Flannigan CSam Rocrayj, a Hollywood talent scout, and Clair Carter Cjanet Archi- baldj, Prudenceis stalwart friend from New York, teamed up to add spicy bits of humor throughout. Young love was portrayed by Beverly Browne playing janet and Steve Yale as Phil. Providing the background for these hilarious situations were the students, a group of varying talents and temperaments. Led by Captain Howie Amundsen, it lost only to strong Watertown. First it got off to a fine start by beating Milton and Swampscott. Then came Watertown, and with it, one of the worst defeats a Knowlton- coached team has suffered. When the smoke had cleared, Winchester was on the short end of a 33-O score. However, the boys showed they could take it by playing their best game of the year the next week, beating Winthrop 48-28. They then went on to win six straight, including a tight 7-6 victory over Read- ing, a 20-0 win over a strong Wakelield team, and, finally, a 39-12 victory over traditional rival, Woburn. Ed Jocko Serieka was the big gun in the Indians' attack, making nineteen touchdowns and scoring 117 of Winchester's 247 points. Along with Serieka in the backfield were the excellent quarterback, Stu Thomson, rugged tackler'and blocker, jim Grifiing 117-pound scatback, Moose Bellinog and his fine defensive replacement, Paul Mahoney. The line, featured by the outstanding and consistent play of Captain Amundsen, was rather inexperienced at the start of the season but im- proved greatly as the season progressed. Other senior linemen on the team were dependable ends John Atkinson and Bob Flaherty, tackle Fran Murphy, and guards Hank Curtis and Bob Derro. Although most of the team will graduate this year, the combination of several returning lettermen, includ- ing Captain-elect john Riordan, plus the ever-present fine coach- ing offered by coaches Henry Knowlton, Frank Provinzano, and Frank Finigan, should make for another fine season this fall. The forward line players, namely Liz Curtis, Alison and Althea Her- sey, .Ioan McNeil, Gloria Mucera, Laura Snow, and Sonny Smith, tallied 22 goals in all, with Sonny leading the scorers. The defensive players not only kept the total number of goals scored against WHS at three but also scored a goal of their own. They were Captain Callahan, Barbe Clark, Joan Con- nors, Ann Hooper, Cie Moses, Kinky Nichols, and Carolyn Stone. The strength of the Varsity was further proved when Sonny, Carolyn, and Ann were chosen for the All-Star Team and Cally and Cie for the All- Star Reserve at the Concord Play Day, at which fifteen schools were repre- sented. The J.
