All year in Ancient History class we heard Mr. Graves discourse on current events, listened to the radio newscasts, and made prophecies on how long each small country would hold out. But America was still fiercely isolationist, and, except in the classroom, we left the arguments and worries to our parents. XY'e were initiated into a good many things that freshman year. Under Miss Baileyls guidance we be- came acquainted with Treasure Islandf, S0hrab and Rustumf and The Lady of the Lakef, Miss Carmichael, with her wonderful smile and standards of excellence paved the way to make Caesar easy for us. And that Mr. Nichols made algebra a joy and delight for all the girls, as well as coach- ing to its first successes a football team with a great future. jack Errieo, Mary W'ood, Joy Pray, and Pete Twombly were our class officers. As the largest freshman class the school had ever seen, we partici- pated in all extra-curricular activities in a big way. liill XVest and Jack Errico co-captained a successful freshman football team. Dave Holmes, Bob Goddu, and Bert Curley played ice hockey. Pete Twombly, Bob Goddu, Bill XVest, Robbie lianisdell, and Charlie Murphy were stars on the diamond. And as for track, well-jocko Murray, XVhew Hawkes, Bob Pynn, Bob Coon, Bob Johnston, Paul Blake, and lrannie Poirier formed the basis of a swell squad. .-En unprecedented number of girls went out for all sports: Mary Keyes won a first-team letter in tennis. Excited at finally being allowed to go to such definitely high school affairs, we danced dreamily in the gym to Deep Purple and Begin the Beguinef' XY'e did the Big Apple, and when we were so tired we could hardly stand, we rcfueled on cokes and cookies or cider and do-nuts. Our ofhcers went to the prom, loved the decorations, the formality. the Gold Coast Orchestra. This was the year we took turns going up to as- semblies, lined up for A lunch by homeroom tardiness records, dropped our money and our food in the cafeteriag bought the new Red and Black and avidly read the gossip column. XY'e got into snowball fights, arguments with teachers. and left poor old Vfadleigh glad for a summer's rest.
