Union Street Winchester, Indiana Volume 17 IT ALL STARTED ... at midnight, August 29, 1982! It was a very dark and mysterious night at WC (right). Everyone could feel the still, heavy air, an almost deathly air, that surrounded the school, and all could tell that something unexpected was about to happen. The only person left in the school was the night janitor, who was getting prepared for the following day. He was making his nightly rounds to each room, when he found a mysterious body lying in the middle of the hall (bottom). At first he panicked. Not knowing what to do, he called in the authorities (bottom left). As Mr. Myers examined the body, he was very surprised at what he found. At first he didn’t know what it was, but after investigating further, he came to his own conclusions. But he kept these conclusions to himself. School started the next day as usual. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. Students knew nothing of the inexplicable dead body, that had lain in the halls the previous night. A meeting was called that afternoon in the main office. The entire faculty wanted to know what 2 — Introduction . . . Mr. Myers had to report. Just as he was about to tell of his conclusions, an eerie feeling, almost a “spirit-like feeling came into the room. Windows broke, glass shattered, and tables shook. Since it was getting late, everyone decided that they had better go on home. The next day, the student body wondered what had happened. Mr. Gibson patrolled the halls all day (top left). Everyone was on the lookout for something suspicious. There were a few suspicious looking people in the halls. Just leaning around and not doing much work (top right). That night more spooky things started to happen. A group of people with candles started searching for clues. It was in the dead of night, but still some courageous people searched (bottom right). Two lighted candles located in the auditorium, marked the spot where everyone was to meet after they ended their search (bottom left). Introduction — 3 ft M V 7 A R i :... .. . Their search ended unsuccessfully. No clues were brought forth. Not only were people searching the halls and in the tunnel, but also checking to find fingerprints for evidence (bottom right). Forensic methods were used to determine the cause of death, but this also proved fruitless. The faculty was really getting upset. Anyone who might look the least bit guilty was asked if they knew anything about the mysterious incident. Mr. Hedden used his physical ability to find out if “certain people knew certain things” (right). It was decided that the boys’ physical education class looked the most guilty, so therefore, they were tortured during P.E. (bottom left). These tortures were anything from Killers”, running up and down the bleachers, to wall squats. 4 — Introduction ... The classes decided to build traps to see if they could catch someone doing the suspicious things that were happening (top middle left). Because she was acting suspicious, Cari Shaw was questioned to see if she knew anything (middle). Jill Symons was caught running away. Did she do it? No one knows. During the search, we found that the whole student body had something to do with the spirit of WC. With only a dead body, on and on went the search. The spirit will remain haunting the halls, and the spirit of the student body will always live on at WC. The following pages show how the spirit of the entire student body is expressed throughout the 1982-83 school year. 7f'r t Watching y on! Introduction — 5 We saw many changes this year at WC. The most noticeable were changes in clothing and hair styles. Almost everything imaginable was seen. Everything from mini-skirts to sweat suits, from leg warmers to ballet shoes. Last year’s preppie alligators were replaced by this year's foxes and hushpuppies. The names for the new styles were new wave and punk. Some other clothes that were seen were prairie skirts, ruffled blouses, baggy pants, pedal pushers or knickers, oxford shirts, monogrammed sweaters, and many different styles of shoes. Hair styles changed quite a bit too. It seemed as if the hair on top got shorter and the backs got longer, not only in the girls' styles, but also in the boys’. The language, as usual, changes from year to year. This year’s expressions changed from “neat, cool, fox, and hey, man to “totally awesome, tubular, wow, and gag me with a spoon. Frienship pins put their best foot forward, so to speak. Little safety pins decorated with beads of many colors started showing up on the shoelaces of everyone's tennis shoes. Friends exchanged these “frienship pins and those with the most pins, probably had the most friends. We Watched Fads Come And Go BELOW: Vanessa Wilson is shown wearing one of the popular monogrammed sweaters. LOWER RIGHT: Betsy Harrell and Amy Frasier model the NEW WAVE fashionalbe mini-skirts. Face painting was also the in thing to do this year. Flowers and stars gave a decorative flair to any girl’s cheek. In keeping with the video age, Pac-Man paintings raced across the nose of many. And to show spirit for your school at sports, even a WC or Falcon or 1 might appear on the face. Juice in milk cartons served before school became popular this year. And names like Taco Bell, Current Price List '83 Averages ITEM COST Jeans $30.-40. Sweaters $20. Gas $1.13-1.20 McDonalds $2.50-3. Pizza $8.-10. Shoes $20.-40. Drive-In Movie $2.75 Theater $3.50 Albums $8.-10 45's $2.00 Godfather’s Pizza, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Ponderosa, and Claras became favorite eating establishments. For attention some people go to extremes. A few of our fellow students created their own small band of crutch groupies. Elaborately signed casts were real status symbols. But it took a serious injury to achieve membership in this elite group. Try our leg warmers, they fit your legs 6 — Introduction Melissa Phenis is getting all dolled up. The students at WC all walk the FALCON way! Tammy Keys and Jane Zell are good examples of what PUNK can do. Sherri Harris and Todd Bastian joined in on the crutch and cast crew. The cooks asked everyone one question this year. Have you had your O.J. today? Introduction — 7 While we were watching we saw . . . Bob Schmidt, the cool guy that he is, opening his locker . . . Students filing into the auditorium for a convo on genetics, a favorite . . . The wrestlers being honored at the Winter sports banquet ... Jackie Beam and Karen Byrd showing their spirit by being cheerleaders . . . Jenny Daly being a “ham” in English class . . . Mike Hess getting a little carried away eating his chocolate pie 8 — Introduction Watch Them Now! V' N - BELOW: Carla Peebles' most outstanding characteristic is her great big smile. This year the Annual Staff held a contest, Most Unforgettable Personality in the 1982-83 school year. The Unforgettables received their yearbooks free and were recognized as being named Most Unforgettable. This year seniors Matt Baldwin and Carla Peebles captured this honor. Speaking to the people around school, they all had one thing to say about the Unforgettables, Whenever they're around, you are in for a good laugh. Matt has a very unusual outlook on life, but you can always catch him clowning around in the halls. Carla on the other hand finds the best in every person and in every situation, showing this by always displaying her beautiful smile. Some people we’ll remember for all the wrong reasons, but Matt and Carla will be remembered for the positive things. You were a good choice for our Unforgettables, because you'll always stand out in any crowd. Introduction — 9 10 OPPOSITE PAGE. First during Homecoming they entered an Alice in Wonderland float in the parade. Although they participated enthusiastically at Fun Games their total only brought them the booby prize of $5.00. In December they raffled off an Odyssey video game which made a local family an extra special Christmas. In February the class sponsored a Candle shoot for carnival. And for sectional they painted a mural and planned a skit for the pep session. CLASS OFFICERS. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Swift, sponsor; Jane Zell. V-Pres.; Bill Davis. Pres.; Amy Jennings. And this fall at Homecoming they ran a close second to seniors. Their goal is to win the spirit stick for both Homecoming and Sectional. Most agree that Sophomore year is a kind of Limbo. As a new project this year they sold Schumeth’s pizzas (Michael’s Pizza Warehouse). Orders for pizzas totaled 469 while subs came to 233 with a final profit of $1400. Now the Juniors could seriously consider a theme for the Prom scheduled for May 7. They chose as a class the theme “On The Wings Of Love”. Finally Juniors welcomed CLASS OFFICERS. In August the Seniors knew the end was only nine months away. May 27 was the day they had been waiting for, for almost 13 years. The Seniors came in before school their last year to pick up class assignments, schedules, and locker numbers and combinations. Things changed in January as 21 seniors graduated mid-term and seniorities had set in. On April 29 some Seniors went to Rossburg, Ohio for a “Senior party they’ll never forget.” The week before Commencement was Grad night at King’s Island. Wow, what a night! But it’s over so quick. They have gone through the usual routine of getting up, going to school, and waiting for the 3:10 bell. Then the bell sounds and it really is all over. There is no more routine, but rather time stretching ahead. Oh, it’s a scary time alright, but exciting too. Now they must be making their own decisions about the future. Because it will affect the rest of their lives. Although all senior classes go through the same routine, of all students who have come before, each class is special and unique in its own way. They know better than anyone how they are special, and will remember all the exceptional things they have done together. By their senior year, most of them have been together for six years. They have grown up together and have learned from each other. And it’s hard to let old friends go. Sure, they will occasionally see each other, but they will never be together as a senior class again. Seniors — 39 40 OPPOSITE PAGE: You had better watch It. because Mr. Brueck is watching you! Mrs. Northcutt is prepared to teach her junior English class. 41 Mr. Gary Keesling comes to us most recently from Randolph Southern where he has served as Superintendent for the past four and a half years. Fifteen years of his early career were spent teaching, coaching, and counseling around the state. Then he took a position at I.U. East in Richmond for eight years in a post which would be comparable to Dean of Students on a larger campus. When asked about his union with Randolph Central, Mr. Keesling said, I enjoy being superintendent, that's exciting. Also I have more interest in Winchester as this is my hometown. In fact I'm surprised at the many painless hours I put in as superintendent and that's because I enjoy it so much.” His family also enjoys the change, his wife Gwen and four children, who all graduated from WC. Now that he is here Keesling says his wife and he are again both living in the same world . Mr. Keesling went on to say that since his arrival he has not tried to make many major changes so ‘not to rock the boat', so to speak. Instead he felt major changes have taken place in the past and as a good administrator perhaps this would be a good time to sit back and reflect on these changes. But he was especially proud of the major strides made in our computer programs, and it has been gratifying to do this with noncorporation funds. Keesling was especially pleased with the improved public relations program headed up by Mrs. Margo Varner. With good public relations, a better positive image will develop in the community,” Keesling pointed out. And finally Mr. Keesling noted “Hopefully I am involving the administrative council in corporation decisions and keeping the WC Gets New Super Board well informed on those things occurring in our corporation. Interestingly enough Mr. Keesling enjoys cartooning as a hobby. Although his time is limited, he did find time to design car- tooned certificates for straight A students, a letter of support for Lowell Shaffer, and letters of thanks to the basketball players, as a few examples. He also enjoys gardening and cutting firewood. ABOVE: Mr. Gary Keesling, the new superintendent, joined Randolph Central on De cember 23. 1982. BELOW: Mr. Walter Zebrun. Administration — 43 Sometimes risks must be taken to change. According to Mr. Fox a greater interest in the basic computer classes has occurred. Spanish and Art were expanded to four FACULTY: ____ Calculated Risk years, and new classes introduced last year include Journalism and Honors English. Speech was also added to ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades. Mr. Fox said, Next year may see an expansion in the computer classes, a basic English class, and a fifth year of Math. The computer classes have shown the greatest growth. Last year there was only one class and this year computers were expanded to four classes. In this class the students learn how to write elementary programs using basic language. Mrs. Fine announced, We would like to change the class to a full year with more business literacy and advanced application. This year the school bought five new Model III 48K Dual Disk computers, now making a total of nine computers. In the English department, Mrs. Hawley pointed out that two new classes were introduced — Journalism and Honors English. She expressed, I hope for more offerings for students based on their ability instead of their grade level. Another change is in Driver's Training. Normally this class was held in the summer at WC. Now it may be taken also during school. It must be taken for one semester for .05 credit. While two to three people are driving the rest benefit from a study hall until it is their turn. Some of the drawbacks of having Driver’s Ed. during school are no interstate or big city driving because of the time factor involved. Mr. Brueckheimer said, In the summer more students go through Driver’s Ed. quicker because they have one and a half hours of driving time and three hours when they double up for long trips. From 1967-72 he attended Manchester and completed his college work in 1972 at Ball State. He worked at Union High School for eight years and for five years he taught biology and chemistry while he also coached varsity baseball and reserve basketball. He was the athletic director there for three years. Mr. Stephen returns to WC in 1982 as the new athletic director. He said about WC, I enjoy working at WC because I already knew some of the teachers and I know some of the students because they are the kids of some of the people I went to school with at WC.” In addition he likes working at WC because it is a shorter drive to work and it is easier to supervise activities. As for hobbies some of Mr. Stephen's favorites are farming, hunting, fishing, and or course, sports. Mrs. Degner went to high school in Richmond. Upon graduating she started college at Brevard Community College in Koco, Florida for two years. She then returned to I.U. East for one year and finished at Ball State. This is only her second year of teaching after one year at Greenfield, Indiana. When asked which class she preferred teaching Mrs. Degner stated, “I like teaching both Spanish and Algebra equally, because I like the change of pace.” Mrs. Degner said she really likes teaching here but was at first a little skeptical. But it helped to get a chance to teach Spanish which she did not get to do last year. Her favorite hobby is reading. TOP: Mr. Stephen. Athletic Director. LOWER RIGHT: Sally manning the desk and telephones. 40 Year Although Sally's (Sarah Smith) anniversary was February 1, the faculty threw a party the fourteenth with the theme “Forty Years Our Sweetheart”. She received many cards, gifts, and flowers from students, friends, and faculty. Sally attended WC and then went to Hanover college. She majored in Business Administration and upon graduation became secretary at WC in February of 1943. Sally has worked as secretary to six principals and has seen thousands of students pass through WC. “I like teenagers,” she says. Students now are more academically inclined. They take more classes, therefore they work harder. While the administration was changing, so too was the nature of Sally’s job. The school has now developed guidance counselors, a nurse, and a clinic which took over many responsibilities Sally had done as part of her job in the past. Everyone knows Sally and has plenty to say about her like these comments from faculty and for- mer students. “She is still as much fun as she was when I worked for her as a senior,” says Mrs. Longenbaugh. “Sally is like a Hallmark card, she cares enough to give the best. She's the spoke of the wheel we can't do without, remembers Mrs. Halley. Sally is very sweet and professional, I admire her highly. She taught me everything I know!” spoke up Darlene Williams. Mr. Fox figured, Just think, I was 2Vz years old when Sally started here.” With a touch of humor, Mr. Gibson said, “Sally goes by the motto — Short and Simple.” Mrs. Peters said, “I appreciate the help Sally has given me in my new job. She is witty and intelligent. “She’s a very dedicated lady and cares about all the people of WC,” comments Mr. Stephen. Mr. Brueckheimer promises, After all is said and done there is only one Sally and it's you!” And finally Mrs. Gardner quotes, Sally is a very loyal and dedicated individual. We have had great experiences these past “FEW” years. Some of Sally's most memora- Sweetheart ble moments came when she thinks about the chorus trip to Lafayette and she had to accompany a sick girl in an ambulance. The trip to Philadelphia with the band was special. And she always remembers those girls and boys who win tourneys and contests. Her favorite times are SNOW DAYS. Sally’s favorite hobbies are bossing the administration and faculty, breaking in office workers, knitting and driving. She also likes dogs and Garfield the Cat. Miss Sally Smith — 47 If You Need Help, It’s There! Help was there. You may not have noticed it or maybe just didn't want it, but it was there. In fact it was all over the place, giving you a hand. Without this help school couldn’t function. Who gives this help? The School Auxiliary personnel. The School Auxiliary personnel consists of the Bus Drivers, Cafeteria personnel, Custodians, and the School Nurse. These people are such a part ot our lives that sometimes we take their help for granted. Remember that morning you were running late? Who gave you that helping hand by waiting those few extra seconds? And who helped you by opening your locker when a good swift kick or a jerk would not do the job? And what about the time you actually got sick? Who was there to help you, telling you whether or not to go home? And what about the time you were too nervous to eat breakfast because of a big test? Who helped you through the rest of the day by giving you a good lunch? Who gave us all that help? That's right. When we needed help, these important people were there. They usually find some way to enjoy themselves. For instance, when Seniors find the pressures of Civics class too much, so they take a break away from classroom activities. Remember the time Shane Lewallen tried relieving his headache by studying Civics in the hall next to his locker. Some students relax during lunch by leaning against the windows in the Commons and catching up on the latest gossip. For a change of pace others play games on the computers. And still others let a laugh carry them a long way. Whatever means they use, WC students still find time for fun each day amidst the pressures. RELIEF? Grease pencils, proper croppers. a lot of pictures, and an immense amount of mess are some of the things YOU will see in the annual staff room, but what did we see? We watched you struggle through the school year of 1982-83 by winning Homecoming, putting on great performances in all areas of sports and school activities. making a beautiful prom, and ending with graduation. Besides all the struggles we saw a lot of everyday activities like waiting in the lunch line, talking in the hall, and studying for tests. Our job was to record all of the events that you treasured most this year, and we found the job a lot more difficult than we had anticipated in the beginning. We watched, planned, and compiled to make the yearbook a story of what we saw. So we dedicate this book to you whom we have watched with fascination this year. Homecoming ’82 — An Exciting Tradition Starting September 13-17 the Falcons revolved around the theme A Classical Falcon Victory . The week began with dress up days such as Punk Rock; Hat Day; Gold, Black, and White Day; Class Day; and Dress Up Day. After school activities consisted of a bonfire and Powder Puff football, where the girls played and the guys were the cheerleaders. Everyone enjoyed fun and games especially the new pie eating contest. The evening opened with a parade which began at the field-house, continued through town and ended at the high school to begin the football game. At half time the spirit stick was awarded to the senior class, and Rhonda Moore was crowned the 1982 Homecoming Queen. Other members of the court were: Laura Study, Freshman; Angie Keys, Sophomores; Angie Stuckey, Junior; and Margy Curry and Liz Shepherd, Senior queen candidates. With sights returning to the second half of the game, the Falcon fans witnessed a classical victory over Centerville 20-8. Following the game the WC Student Council closed the Homecoming activities by sponsoring a dance which lasted from 9-12:00. LEFT: Seniors Steve Millares. Gayle Sears. Rhonda Moore. Homecoming — 57 Let’s Get On Board Again this year we had the Student Leadership Retreat at Camp Clements in Richmond, with Miss King (Chairman) organizing it. During an interview with her we learned: HOW DO STUDENTS GET TO GO TO THE RETREAT? ‘‘Nominations are submitted by the faculty and the junior high faculty for the freshmen. Ballots are counted. Those receiving the most votes are invited. They are based on teachers’ observations of leadership demonstrated.” WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF HAVING IT? “To develop POSITIVE leadership qualities within the participants. Leadership is responsibilities and challenge. WHAT WERE SOME ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE LEADERSHIP? Skit presentations, public speaking, and developing positive mental attitudes. SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF WORK TO US. It’s a lot of work on the part of the committee, but it's rewarding work. UPPER LEFT: Mr. Simmons, one of the sponsors, loads up to go home. Any student can communicate his opinion to the committee and in turn the member will bring that matter up at the meeting. A general consensus is thus reached. Model Leg. WCHS along with four other area high schools, each year participates in a Model State Legislature. Each student who participates is a member of either the House or Senate. Each member is required to write a bill to be considered by the General Assembly. The bills are first sent to committees made up of members of the House or Senate. The bills are discussed, amended, rewritten, passed, tabled or voted down by the committee. Those bills which survive the committee hearing are sent to the floor of the Houses where they are again discussed. The bills that are passed by both houses are then sent to the governor who either signs or vetoes them. WC Model Legislature was proud to have Jeff Short serve as Speaker of the House and Jeff Brueckheimer to serve as minority floor leader responsible for guiding the Democrats legislative program. Bill Haworth, youth director at the Winchester Congregational Christian Church, met with students at 7:30 in the Library. They sang, fellowshipped together, and had devotions and prayer times together. They have a common bond, they share a love for Christ. The WC Spirit Committee has been active. At Christmas they had a Secret Santa which consisted of different members of the committee leaving presents or small gifts for their chosen teacher or administrator. They also helped boost the spirit of the school by making posters for the games or activiies of the school, and putting different things on students' lockers so that they were recognized. Band — 77 Extravaganza ’83 Extravaganza is action, music, color, and lights. It's impressive pageantry looked almost professional. Special ingredients this year were solos by Gay Fetters on sax, Eric Chandler on xylophone, and Bob Spradling on drums. All were performed with our stage band. Another pleasant surprise was a lovely hymn by Mrs. Diane Jones. Humor was achieved by the Swing Choir's version of “A Commercial Message” and the band's familiar SESAME STREET characters. But lights and glamor really showed up in Chorus Line” performed by the band and majorettes. Jackie Beam was audition director in this number. The standing ovation comes with the final patriotic song with Dave Rees singing a solo. Rose Peacock portraying the Statue of Liberty, and the majorettes displaying the flag. The Senior edition contains the ideal boy and girl, last will and testaments, and comments from Seniors. Journalism — 81 Prom ’83 On The Wings Of Love One hundred forty couples and 32 faculty and administrators flew On The Wings Of Love” at WC’s 1983 Prom. This year’s Prom was decorated in a beautiful park scene. A bridge over the patio was planned but had to be cancelled along with several other outdoor decorations because of a rainstorm the night of the Prom. But on the inside, the decorations were beautiful. A gazebo decorated the middle of the dance area and was also used as the queen stand. The bandstand was also a larger gazebo. The ceiling was covered by stars and several lighted trees decorated the area. The west wall was lined with a seashore fence made of short logs and rope. A dusk scene also decorated the wall which consisted of the moon and a dove. Music was provided by the band GOLD RUSH and all enjoyed the wide variety of music. Penny VanNote, Sally Cook, Janice Jarrett, and Kevin Helton served cookies, mints, and punch. At After Prom the specialities were meat trays, fruits, cheese-balls, soft drinks, and an ice cream cart serving ice cream cones. The queen and her court consisted of Rhonda Moore, queen; Mary Macy and Rose Peacock, princesses. All began the dance to the theme of the Prom. Prom — 83 Opening the year the Spanish club participated in the Homecoming parade by entering a horse and rider representing Zorro as their float. Besides students teaching Spanish to elementary students, an annual trip to a Spanish restaurant, One Accord, was made. A Spanish jail was installed at the winter carnival, but primarily the club focused on a trip to Mexico this year. The students left for Mexico on Thursday, March 24. and returned on April 1. To earn money for the trip, students sold candy and Wayne Meeks earned his way 100%. Mrs. Knasinski said, “The nice thing is anyone who wants to take a trip of this kind, can.” After students returned from Mexico the Spanish club held a picture party featuring pictures from the trip. Spanish closed the year by sponsoring three students at Ball State Spanish weekend in April and by holding the annual banquet honoring seniors in May. As anyone can see our Spanish group is enthusiastic, active, fluent, and on the go. Students Go Mexican Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta ... French Club — 85 raduates of WC Have ”ained Excellence and Success On Friday, Mary 27, 148 seniors made their way down the aisle for commencement in front of family, friends, and faculty. The girls robed in white while the boys donned black. At the center of attention, senior nerves were shaky when “Pomp Circumstance” announced the processional, but once seated seniors appeared at ease in their role as newest graduates of WC. Speeches delivered by class officers, the Valedictorian and Salutatorian, Rev. Merriman, and Principal Fox reminded all seated that they had derived from education what they had put into it. Now the steps forward to the future were theirs to take. Graduation was not an end but a marvelous beginning. But at least they'll have more experience going for them.” On the other hand Jr. Varsity had a better season with a 14-2 record. The coach — Mrs. Williams said, Each team member is a special person and hopefully basketball for them has been filled with many memorable moments while compiling a 14-2 record. In tennis you can get into some awkward positions as shown by Kim Harrell. Anyone? Concentration is the game for Andy Wilson. The Boys' Tennis team was not very successful this year, but it did allow the underclassmen, who will be back again next year, an opportunity to gain experience. Senior Andy Wilson won one point for the team in the Number 3 singles position. The doubles team of Tony Waber and Rory Helms captured the second point for WC. The most anyone can ask for is for you to try, so better luck next year. The Girls’ Tennis team had better luck than the boys this year. All the players advanced in the TEC in the first round. The team came out third overall after playing twelfth ranked Richmond. This is excellent for having five sophomores on the team. Two of the exceptional sophomores were Angie Elder, MVP, and Amy Pass-more who had the best record for the season. Amy Passmore was caught showing her winning form.
