It is a dream, several dreams—the author's, the director's, the actors', the audience's—that coverage on a darkened stage for one brief moment and become one reality. A play is the endless rehearsals on a stage filled with make-shift props to the sound of the piano and animated voices. It is not knowing the lines, everything is funny, nothing is going right, impatience, hurrying, repetition, where's the props, here's the scenery, are we going to make it, sweaty palms, a burst of light, will I remember, my whole family is out there, I goofed that one, they laughed at me, curtain calls, it's all over . . . And the lines from the play that you have heard a million times, that at a hundred odd times in your life, will pop into your head. A play is forever. —MISS GARNER. Much can be said about this play in particular. The practices were a place to go to have fun, to learn and to enjoy. The entire cast was one in a million. Everyone was happy, crazy, funny, and sometimes stupid. They had everything from Gary's goof and stale bread to stolen sandwiches and bedbugs. Through the many practices Miss Garner, play director, never became totally upset. She may have been somewhat concerned and about to lose her mind, but she never gave up hope. Somehow she knew that everything would be just fine. After many weeks the Friday night was here. Everyone gave their 100%—perhaps because their hearts were young and gay. 12
