«£W The Flight of t e MMJk TOP LEFT: Dale Lovell and Vivian Williams, seniors, competing in a Fun and Games event. The Homecoming Fun and Games were held in the afternoon again this year. BOTTOM LEFT: Junior Laura Wilson cheerfully struggles her way to the New York City bound buses. CENTER RIGHT: Workmen as they are trying to complete the fieldhouse floor before the basketball season is completely over. Take off for this year was early but not easy. The boys tennis team suffered through unfinished courts and out-of-town matches. Turn out for the football team was again low, but we had quality and a successful season. Our fieldhouse floor buckled from heavy rainfall in the summer and we would not see a new tartan floor until mid-January. Although we had a slow start, there will be many heights to our flight, as you will soon find true. 3 Ufa. MM UPPER LEFT: Seniors Carlton Brumfield and Gary Jenkins battle-it-out at an afternoon football practice. UPPER RIGHT: Junior Sharon Grimm, WC's best and only member of the swimming team, poses here for a quick picture. Sharon placed second at the sectional, qualifying her for state butterfly competition. LOWER RIGHT: Senior Vivian Greene is seen here dreaming on the phone at her FBLA career day at Overmyer Corporation. 4 Soaring high the Falcons reached many heights of excellence throughout this year. Many titles and victories were earned. Some Falcons with no team to support them brought honors to WC by reaching their own personal goals. Soaring can be done in many ways: from a cold morning on a football field, to racing the wind in the sack race, or from dreaming, to expressing your innerself in leather. Soaring can be experienced by anyone and it can really make you high. UPPER LEFT: Sophomore Lisa Mills uses her artistic talents by transferring her drawing into leather. LOWER LEFT: Freshman Shawna Marquess and Rick VanDuyn race to the finish in the afternoon Fun and Games. ABOVE: Some Swing Choir members including Terry Mays, Terry Garrett, Dale Lovell, and Amory Merriman practice for the Jimmy Ratliff Telethon. 5 LEFT TO RIGHT. Kim Kepner taking a bite of senior enjoyment. CENTER: Jana Cline playing teacher overlooking her students Dave Covert, Dave Macy, Greg Mock, and Harry Wilson. They seem to be enjoying themselves, anyway. LOWER LEFT: Diana Byrd lays a big one on Randy Garland during Fun Games. LOWER RIGHT: Jeannie Phillips as she shows her ecstatic point of view during Fun Games. 6 As our flight proceeds and our time passes by, we learn many things, encounter new experiences and have a lot of fun. Our moods change by midyear because we know it won't be long. While we are at this stage of our flight, we take the time to zoom in on some senior members of our journey. TOP: The creative foods class as they are displaying their cookout. CENTER LEFT: Lori Brenton as she asks for help from Mr. Hawley. ABOVE: Jeff Condor Winningham portrays his idol the Incredible Hulk or is it the Jolly Green Condor ? LEFT: Kiss a Pig for Cancer.'' And that's just what Mr Valandingham did to add support to Student Council's collection of donations. 7 «?file 4 £ ABOVE: A concerned looking Mr. Jones looks on as the WC Marching Show Band performs for Dick Schneider, seated, who planned the camera shots for NBC television. CENTER: In downtown New York City, the center of attraction is the WC Marching Show Band being viewed' by the huge hot air balloons. Underdog and Kermit the Frog. 8 Pictures compliments of the News-Gazette by Janet Fuller and Jenny Ludy. RIGHT: Grand Marshall, Mickey Rooney, rides atop the Macy's turkey in the parade. ABOVE: Senior Beth McKissick, being amused by one of Macy's own employees dressed up as a clown. LEFT: Playing to the crowd at Macy's store front and to an estimated 70 million T V. viewers. In May of 1979, the WC band members and their parents learned that the WC band had been chosen from 400 entries to march in the 53rd annual Macy's parade during Thanksgiving. This trip was designed to get the maximum from New York in a limited amount of time. Within moments after arrival, the entire group was on the subway and off to the Statue of Liberty. The excitement did not stop there. The next few days were filled with visiting the World Trade Center, Chinatown, The New York Experience, Radio City Music Hall, the Broadway hit Annie and many expensive downtown department stores. After completing the trip, Mr. Jones said, It was the best trip we've ever had. iflvm Si S blej LEFT TO RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM: Senior Debbie Hildreth after being awarded 1980 Homecoming Queen. Dale Lovell, Amory Merriman, and Chris Retter get into Homecoming dress-up days. Also representing Seniors at Homecoming were Chris Retter and Vivian Williams. Homecoming was early this year, but everyone was ready. Cheerleaders thought of the catchy theme From Funnies to Fables With the Falcons ' The traditional window displays and murals were displayed, and Fun Games took place. Window displays were creative and attractive. The titles ranged from Falcons and Their Superfriends to What's Up Doc? And the murals throughout the school showed class spirit as well as hard work for those participating. The annual Fun Games designed to fire-up faculty, students, and team members was held in the afternoon. Because of rainfall some games were omitted, but students still enjoyed the shoe grab, sack races, balloon toss, and the tug-of-war. As is the custom the Spirit Stick is awarded at the Homecoming game, and this year's winner was the Juniors. 10 Itifkk ft £F((ir V l fr £ NEAR LEFT: After much encouragement from friends, classmates, and girlfriends seniors Dave Macy, Jeff Winningham, and Dean Edwards don their tights to portray those Saturday Superfriends Superman, Robin, and Batman, respectively. These super guys daringly rode the Batmobile designed by the Senior class in the Homecoming parade. BOTTOM LEFT: Seniors Joe Tanner, and Kelly McCoy each show their happiness after catching their water balloons in that ever popular but wet Balloon Toss. BOTTOM RIGHT: Here is part of that Almighty Falcon Football Team entering the field for Fun Games, dressed in jerseys for spirit and being followed by many of their student fans. ABOVE: The entire cast after their performance. LOWER RIGHT: Donnie Smith, a junior, discouraged from playing little games with the passengers. What is a play—this play, any play? It is a dream, several dreams—the author's, the director's, the actors', the audience's—that coverage on a darkened stage for one brief moment and become one reality. A play is the endless rehearsals on a stage filled with make-shift props to the sound of the piano and animated voices. It is not knowing the lines, everything is funny, nothing is going right, impatience, hurrying, repetition, where's the props, here's the scenery, are we going to make it, sweaty palms, a burst of light, will I remember, my whole family is out there, I goofed that one, they laughed at me, curtain calls, it's all over . . . And the lines from the play that you have heard a million times, that at a hundred odd times in your life, will pop into your head. A play is forever. —MISS GARNER. Much can be said about this play in particular. The practices were a place to go to have fun, to learn and to enjoy. The entire cast was one in a million. Everyone was happy, crazy, funny, and sometimes stupid. They had everything from Gary's goof and stale bread to stolen sandwiches and bedbugs. Through the many practices Miss Garner, play director, never became totally upset. She may have been somewhat concerned and about to lose her mind, but she never gave up hope. Somehow she knew that everything would be just fine. After many weeks the Friday night was here. Everyone gave their 100%—perhaps because their hearts were young and gay. 12 . Shank Qthel STaUv n LEFT TO RIGHT: Juniors Stephanie Whitesel and Laura Wilson discussing their voyage overseas. Senior Dave Thornburg and Freshman Wendy Prescott portraying unique parts. Senior Gary Hoffman with a look of confusion in his role. Seniors Dale Lovell and Amory Merriman, fictional father and daughter, making jokes to one another. Amory and Stephanie with tears on stage. Young and Gay 13 Mardi Gras To most girls, being selected from their class to represent their school in a beauty, talent, and personality contest, is only a dream. To ten very beautiful girls their dream became reality. Representing each school in the county were two girls from their senior class to participate in the Jaycees Mardi Gras pageant. The MC for the pageant was Jack Underwood. Representing WCHS this year were Chris Retter and Vivian Williams. Chris received first runner-up and was named Miss Congeniality by her opponents. Vivian received second runner-up and did very well. Rhonda Kingen was crowned Miss Mardi Gras 1979-1980 by Cindy Wynn, 1978-1979 queen, and also won the talent award. Winchester was well represented by two very beautiful, charming and talented girls. ABOVE: Mardi Gras winners were from left, Lisa Mote, Vivian Williams, Rhonda Kingen, Chris Reeter, and Shelley Sloniker. LOWER LEFT: Chris Retter beautifully playing NADIA'S THEME on the grand piano. Vivian Williams during the introduction of the program. 14 Once again the Union City Jaycees sponsored the Junior Miss pageant. All senior girls are eligible to participate in the profitable contest. Representing WCHS were Amory Merriman, Jana Cline, Marita Coffman, Karen Cox, and Michelle Wysong. Every girl had to prepare her own talent. Poise and appearance played a very important part in the selection of the Miss Junior Miss 1979-1980. Every girl performed their talent very well. Talent ranged from dance routines to songs and piano solos. WCHS had a large variety of girls to represent us, and they did a fine job. Junior TOP TO BOTTOM: Michelle Wysong, senior, introducing herself in the beginning of pageant. LEFT TO RIGHT, our own Jana Cline and Amory Merriman, Tonia Hap, Union City; and Michelle Wysong also from WCHS. Amory Merriman singing a song that her brother arranged entitled “Where Is Love from the musical, ''Oliver, During an hour of waiting for the judges, the MC, Gil Whitney, entertained the audience with jokes and general humor. There was a swing choir from Ansonia, Ohio, with a very interesting program for the spectators. Finally, the judges appeared and the winners were announced. Jana Cline won the Youth Fitness award. Michelle Wysong received second runner-up. Amory Merriman received first runner-up and was chosen best personality by her opponents. Tonia Hap was crowned Miss Junior Miss and received the talent award. 15 ... s e srsr $ r Although it is time now to set us free, we take a look at some other happenings. We take a bow to the Seniors, underclassmen, faculty, and later briefly view the sportsmen and other activities. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves we must stop and remember all the fun we have had, the things we have done, and the memories we will cherish. As we look into the above picture more closely, we know that this will mean the end for some, but only a beginning for others. Regardless of which it means, we hope this experience is one of many horizons, highlights, and memories. US 16 sra s e SEN ORS After four years of effort the end has come or is it the beginning? How could this year ever be forgotten. It was a year of firsts. From our strong football team coming in first in the TEC, crowning Debbie Hildreth as our first Homecoming Queen, and beating Jay County for the first time in the basketball sectional. Then our senior class won its first spirit stick during the regional week. A Final Fleeting Look At Our Seniors In Action The Juniors had a busy year planning the prom and worrying about making money for the prom. Because the Field House was closed for floor repairs, the Juniors lost out on basketball concessions. The Juniors began making money this year by selling pizza and sub kits. At Homecoming they sold helium balloons. The Juniors did manage to sell concessions at the last five home basketball games, and they also sold raffle tickets. At the March Carnival, the Juniors set up two booths—a Cake Walk and Funny Fotos. Even though the Juniors had a handicap they took first place for spirit stick and the Prom took place as usual. Without the effort that the Juniors put forth, the Prom may never have become a reality. The Sophomores The first project for the Sophomores this year was planning for the homecoming activities. Their float was entitled Lincoln Eagles Sat on a Wall, Lincoln Eagles had a Great Fall. It was a great way to show their support for the team and also to show their class teamwork. When the homecoming spirit stick was handed out the sophomores soared into a close second place. During the events leading to the sectional this second place finish was enthusiastically repeated. The Sophomores spirit has really been flying high this year. Sophomore class members sold posters in January. This was done to get a head start on the expenses they will be faced with their Junior and Senior years. Keep it up Sophomores. They came in second in the fun and games events and they placed high in the other activities. Overall they came in a close second right behind the Junior class. It was a hard fought battle from the very start. The Sophomore's have made a reputation for themselves that will take the spirit and determination that only they seemingly possess. Sophomores you have a great thing going. Keep up the spirit and drive that has made you the class that you are, because your future is bound to be an exciting one. The students came through with a float entitled Falcons Rate among the Best and depicted some of their favorite cartoon characters. Next on the Freshmen agenda was the all school carnival. The class turned out blowing up balloons and supervising a balloon break. Everyone left their booth a winner with prize in hand. The Freshmen participating in the Fun and Games activities made themselves known by participating loyally in each event. Their teamwork and spirit made the excitement greater than ever. Mrs. Benham, Mrs. Gardner, and Mrs. Halley. The Home Ec. Program hopes to prepare students for a dual role in a successful career and as a homemaker. This year Home Ec. has added to the curriculum the prevention of mental retardation and incorporated career awareness. Earlier this year FHA sponsored Dr. Sam Rhine, a geneticist, for an all school convocation. The Home Ec. Dept, is hoping to work out a HERO program where students can go to school part of a day and work in a Home Economics related occupation the other part. As always the objective is to meet the students needs. This requires constantly evaluating and up-dating the curriculum offerings in WC. Arts Mr. Gary Drill, Mr. Phil Hawley, Mr. Lowell Simmons, Mr. Walter Skinner, and Mr. Tom Zell. The Art Department is trying to create an interest in art among the students and the community. Mrs. Rosenberg says that Art gives you the opportunity to try new areas of interest, a sense of achievement and accomplishment, and something that is very individual and personal. The Art Department has done many things this year such as set designs for the play and Musical. Mrs. Rosenberg and Art III and IV classes did the original set design for the 1980 Extravaganza. In different school locations individual students did window displays of their work. WC participated in and hosted the 1980 Randolph County High School Art Show, and hopefully will have a school Art Show later in the Spring. The Vocational Agriculture Department is preparing students to be productive citizens in the Agribusiness and tries to give students all the skills they need. This year they have raised and harvested a fourteen acre farm plot. During the spring they repaired a tractor and reconditioned a disc. The VO-AG Department has a very important part to play in the education of WCHS students. With people starving everyday, the American farmer must learn to produce even more and efficiently. As Mr. Snyder stated, I hope that I can do my share to help feed this ever growing world. The main thrust in the Industrial Arts Department is to give all students an orientation to the actual world of work. Its purpose has been to expose students to as many and varied experiences as possible so as to assist them in making some choices for their life-style and work. This year students have been exposed to more construction type of skills, and to more of their role in the building of the future. In the future they hope to introduce students to the work area in the community. 60 Music Dept OPPOSITE PAGE, UPPER RIGHT: Jeff Condor Winningham greeting his new date Mr. Tom Zell. Dale Lovell followed to introduce our first woman Commencement speaker, Mrs. Marcia Blair. Mrs. Blair challenged the students to cause things to happen in their lives. She asked, What will you be in thirty years at the age of 48? For these graduates she hoped that in 30 years they would be able to say they had found happiness in life and were truly proud of what they had accomplished to date. At the conclusion of Mrs. Blair's speech, Mr. Richard Valandingham presented the class, and each person was called forward to receive his her diploma from Superintendent Ron Myers and School Board President Jean Keever.
