Fall 7 Winter 23 Spring 41 Student Life 57 Album 69 Support 121 Index 141 Winchester Community High School Winchester, Indiana Volume 13 IfifM WCHS experienced two bomb threats the first month of school and the student body spent those hours on the football field. The football team has been super for the past four years. This year only a few guys went out for the team, but the team consisted of quality members. The Winchester Marching Show Band took semi-state, state, and captured the Orange Bowl's National title by defeating Live Oak Band from California. The Falcon basketball team has leaped to success. The boys have done super with Kenny McCoy reaching a career high of 30 points against Northeastern and Jeff Green receiving 26 points against Centerville. This is the first year for a Winchester student to receive the Junior Miss title and also for the court to be strictly Winchester girls. The Junior Miss title went to Sandy Mills with first runner up being Jill Casperson and second runner up being Hillary Buckley. 2 1. Scott Jones eagerly takes on his wrestling opponent. 2. Shh-Quiet. 3. Freaky Friday dress up winners from left to right were Amory Merriman, Becky Sullivan, Denise Dunham, and Lolita Miranda. 4. Hey, Joe Tanner, a rose is a rose, is a rose. 5. Brent Smith is off and running for a WC victory. 3 Two WC wrestlers advanced to State competition, Scott Jones and Matt Hinshaw. Mrs. Knasinski took twenty Spanish club junior and seniors to Mexico for a week. Mrs. Longenbaugh took 18 speech students to all the Randolph Central elementary schools to tell stories and entertain the children. Also several speech students assisted Mr. Valan-dingham with announcements each morning for six weeks. Student Council set up music to be played in the cafeteria during lunch. Maybe a consolation for no benches in the main hall. Several senior students brought tear gas into the halls forcing Mr. Valandingham and Mr. Brueckheimer to search all the lockers and a few students. Some Days—Fun Days For Unique Falcons 1. Christie Klem says golf can be fun! 2. Cindy Wynn patiently awaits Jack Underwood's question in the Mardi Gras competition. 3. Swing Choir entertains for Open House during National Education Week. 4. Lisa Norris and Mary Anderson escort their fathers to Daddy Date Night held annually by FHA. Football 8 9 Frosh Varsity Freshman football had a slow start this year, but this did not stop Coach Hedden from being on schedule. Coach Hedden had eight players recruited at the start of the Freshman campaign. But as the season got started he had attracted a few more and the final count of members was fourteen. Coach Hedden felt the high point of the season was beating Muncie South and Muncie Central in back-to-back games. And the low spot of the year come when WC failed to win either of the back-to-back overtime games with Union City and Boston. The end result of the Freshman football season was a 3-4-2 record. wc 0 Centerville 7 WC 0 Jay County 18 wc 27 Muncie South 0 wc 26 Muncie Central 14 wc 0 South Adams 18 wc 14 Union City 20 (Overtime) wc 6 Boston 6 (2 Overtim wc 18 Northeastern 0 The Falcons had a successful football season under new head coach, Bill Bush. But there was one problem, there was not enough interested in playing football this year. So with a minimum number of players Coach Bush led his Falcons to an 8-2 season, with big wins over Brookville and South Adams. The players themselves were ready to give one-hundred percent every game. Playing heads-up ball was also a success to the Falcons7 season. In addition the Falcon team finished second in the Tri-Eastern Conference with a 5-1 record. In the final ratings the Falcons wound up with five all-conference players being Kenny McCoy, tight-end; Carlton Brumfield, tackle; Brian Kelly, center; Gary Jarrett, tailback; and Jeff Green, quarterback. The WC ball team will be very sorry to see nine of its members leave after graduation. But each of these seniors can look back on a great season. Thursday students dressed in gold and white representing their school colors. Keeping their spirits high on Friday the 13th students dressed very mysteriously because Friday the 13th was Black Friday. Breaking the tradition because of the rain, students instead began fun and games the afternoon of the game. Some of the new games the students participated in were the body pass, the sack race, the balloon toss, the shoe grab, the tug of war, and the traditional bonfire. Throughout this week students had been competing for the spirit stick through competition in fun and games and dress. The tradition of the parade before the game was continued. During half time the Winchester Community Show Band performed their State Championship Show. Next was the moment that had been awaited, the crowning of Lisa Norris 1978-79 Homecoming Queen. The queen's court included Vivian Williams, junior; Kim Giver, sophomore; and Rhonda Cline, freshman. The bad luck of Friday the 13th finally proved unfortunate to the Falcons as they lost 35-14 against Jay County Patriots. Nonetheless the Falcon Fans supported their team and the Homecoming festivities were still enjoyed by all present. Vivian Williams, Junior Kim Giver, Sophomore Rhonda Cline, Freshman Lisa Norris, Senior Debbie Ferguson, Senior Pat Moore, Senior Happy Times ... Fun Times ... Our Times Cross-Country Building Year Turns Into Success Story This year started out to be a rebuilding year for WC's Cross-Counry. But with a 7-2 dual meet record, the unprecedented three invitational championships, and qualifying for the Regional made this year much more than that. In fact this team did a very fine job filling the shoes of the five seniors who had contributed so much to the Falcon Cross-Country team in the past. WC was led by John Mosier who captured three Invitational Championships as an individual. Moreover Brent Smith, Steve Shanks, and Chris McCoy finished in the top ten in these same Invitationals. Fortunately all of our Cross-Country team members will be back in the fall. Not wishing to rest on their past laurels the Cross-Country team will be striving for bigger and better things in the season to come. In the County Tourney competition our girls lost to the Randolph Southern team which in turn went on to be the tourney champs. Led by captain Teresa Lee and co-captains Lori Haworth and Debbie Hildreth the WC vol-liers defeated Monroe Central in Sectional only to lose to Jay County by a mere two points in the semifinals. If this is any indication of what's to be in the future the freshmen possess a lot of talent to utilize next year in volleyball competition. 16 Being a Freshman there are a lot of new experiences such as taking the Otis Linen test of Mental Maturity which is a test of intelligence. Naturally the Freshmen are delighted to get out of their classes for one morning even if it is a test. And of course getting out of your English class to learn about and be acquainted with the library is a freshmen experience. Each Freshman learns the location of library materials, and all about the Dewey Decimal system, the card catalog, and library rules. Then there is free time to browse. Every year just for a break, a convo committee provides the students with interesting convos. This year James Puckett came to our school about conserving energy. Some of the students participated in his demonstrations which consisted of Leslie Blair and Bob Auker riding a bicycle which made the TV, radio, and light bulb work. Lori Beilis was a good sport, when her hair started to stick straight out due to static electricity. Students really responded to this involving convo. 17 The girls were a new team this year with only Jill Casperson and Jana Cline having the experience of the previous year. Christie Klem, Karen Grimm, and Rhonda Cline came to us as relatively new to the game of golf. But all the girls worked together well to put forth a fine team effort. Nonetheless our season showed only two wins, one against Jay County and the other against Richmond's junior varsity. The remaining six were sound defeats against teams far more expe- Cooperation in Building Year rienced. Low medalist for the year was Jill Casperson whose average was a 57 closely followed by Karen Grimm whose average was a 57.57. One bright spot was Christie's 52 at Hickory Hills against Monroe Central surprising herself as much as anyone. The year finished at the cold and rainy Sectional where our girls finished eighth out of nine teams. But a fine ending to the year was the awarding of the Outstanding Tennis Award for the 1978 year to Kirk Keever. The past years of conference titles has become a memory this year. Next season it's back to the strenuous practices developing serves, forehands, backhands, and just plain good tennis techniques. Those girls from our school were Sandy Mills, who became Junior Miss, Jill Casperson who received first runner-up, and Hillary Buckley who was second runner-up. 20 Mardi Gras Junior Miss Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon This year's play, Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon, was a sophisticated drama telling the story of three people with physical handicaps who leave the hospital and face the world together all the while using humor to combat Heartbreak . Miss Sonda Garner, drama coach, was quoted as saying, The play deals mainly with love and beauty. It is a difficult play that could only be done by a special cast, which I believe I have. We arrived in Miami at 2:30 P.M., then off to the ballroom for a practice session. The next morning it was “rise and shine to another practice at Flamingo Park. That night the exciting moment approached as we arrived at the Orange Bowl Stadium for the Great Bands of the Orange Bowl Contest. Leaving later with accomplishing a goal we never dreamed possible. National CHAMPS! Friday was our Annual Band Banquet at the Green Dolphin overlooking the bay of Miami. Saturday morning we prepared for a visit to Miami's Seaquarium where we saw Flipper the dolphin. Later that night was the 45th Annual King Orange Jamboree Parade where over 600,000 spectators stood along the parade route. Sunday we arrived in Ft. Lauderdale where we attended Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church followed by a visit to the John F. Kennedy Space Center. Later that night we celebrated New Years Eve at the Orlando Hyatt House. Early the next morning we left for Disney World where we marched in the Disney parade and enjoyed the beautiful fantasy land. On Wednesday, January 3, at 2:30 the National Champs were back home. The WCHS Varsity team led off a good season by winning the county tourney by defeating Randolph Southern, and in the final game, Monroe Central. Jeff Green, Joe Hawley, Scott Wickersham and Dean Edwards were selected for the All-County team. Also the Falcon team tied for the Tri-Eastern Conference Championship with Jeff Green, Scott Wickersham, and Joe Hawley selected All-Conference. The WCHS Freshman Basketball team opened its season with a victory over Union County on November 20, 1978. For the next two and a half months they enjoyed a winning season. Highlights of the season included winning the Eastbrook invitational tournament on January 20, 1979. On Thursday March 22, fifth and sixth periods were set aside for Mini Course classes. Some classes that were offered were Biorhythms, Hairstyling, Self-Defense, Magic, Ceramics, Photography, Transcendental Meditation, Basket Weaving, Modern Dance, Speech and Drama, Archery, Interior Decoration, Weight Training, Emergency Training, Racing, Civil War Round Table, Stage Band, Religion and Singing. Some of the instructors were past teachers, students and local community business people. The students really enjoyed this activity and hopefully next year we will find mini courses in our schedule. Cheerleaders Are Enthusiastic This was an unusual year for the cheerleaders. Instead of following the tradition, there were many new candidates for the season. They worked hard too on rebuilding our school spirit. This year helping to build the cheerleading squad with the girls was Miss Sachs, a first year teacher and sponsor. County Tourney: Regains Horseshoe During the County Tourney the Falcon team was not only high on their spirit but so were their competitors. Winchester defeated Randolph Southern 67 to 52 and Monroe Central 60 to 46. It was not only winning the game against Monroe Central but also the County Horseshoe. 31 First Sectional Title Lost The WC Girls Varsity finished the season with an 11-4 record. They were led by three seniors Teresa Lee, Sherry Morrison, and Nadya Villarin. The highlight of the season was when the girls defeated a good Monroe Central team 52-48. However in the sectional the girls were not as fortunate as MC defeated WC in a very close and exciting game 51-48. This was the first Sectional loss for the WC girls in the last three years. With only three seniors on the team the girls are looking forward to next year. The girls B-team started out with an exciting victory with Union County. And an exciting come back against Union County falling short one point. Rhonda Miles played a very supportive role the last few games as did Joy Robbins, Rhonda Eley, and Rhonda Rook. There was as much support on the bench as on the floor. Losing four seniors next year Jeff Green, Ken McCoy, Scott Wick-ersham, and Garry Jarrett, the Falcon team of 1980 will be back with a semi-experienced team and will hopefully take the sectional. 37 After A Silence Of 11 Years The Sound of Music was this year's vocal department musical. 1968 was the first production of The Sound of Music ' and it was also the first year for a musical to be performed in the new auditorium. The musical was highlighted by the reunion of the old cast with the new. This was accomplished by the old musical members presenting the new cast with roses after the show on Saturday night. In addition the musical was accompanied by the Community Orchestra consisting of many members who played for the original production of The Sound of Music. This dramatic musical was portrayed well by Pat McLaughlin as Captain Von-Trapp, Hillary Buckley as Maria, Tammy Lindsey as Mother Superior, the Von Trapp children portrayed by community children, and many others participating in concert choir. Overall the musical was an outstanding success but there was one tragedy. One of the characters was involved in an accident the opening day of the musical. At the last minute Mr. Buckley called on Tammy Hall to take the missing character's place. Although she carried around a little black book throughout, Tammy did an exceptional job. Winter Awards Intramurals Season On March 28 the Annual Winters Award Banquet was held. Many athletes received honors and special awards for basketball (girl and boys), gymnastics, and wrestling. Intramurals, a winter activity, was dominated by Brian Kelly's team which had an undefeated season of 6-0. Jeff Winningham also placed sixth in the discus at the sectional meet. In this growing year the team was led valiantly by seniors Carl McCoy and Bruce Cassady. In Richmond they placed 6th out of 7 teams, and in our own invitational placed 5th out of 7 teams. Our golf team was led by two senior members Dave Kaufman and Kirk Keever. They did quite well considering the team had lost 4 seniors from the previous year and added 5 underclassmen. Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Extravaganza! With these words Keith Brouse sets the pace for three exciting performances of the 1979 WC Extravaganza. First we're off to see the WIZ portrayed with dazzling costumes, super sounds, very effective lighting and a variety of choreography. Now we'll easy on down the road to a fantastic trombone solo Turn Yourself Around featuring the junior high band director, Glenn Weil. Lets journey back into time to December 28, 1979 as the film of the Orange Bowl National Championship is shown. Then came the WC presentation of the Muppet Show. Many members of the band portrayed such characters as Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the Great, Fozzie Bear and the Muppet Band. From the television Muppet Show the WC Swing Choir sent us to a spectacular Broadway presentation including songs from Hello Dolly, Fiddler on the Roof, Chorus Line and Marne. The Stage Band highlighted the evening by showing their excellent playing ability in numbers like MacArthur Park and Tambo featuring the Majorettes. And now a word from our sponsor as the Swing Choir swings into action singing popular television commercials and a Great Jubilation. Then the Majorettes danced to Chorus Line coming up with a fabulous ending. It's back to tradition with Cherish and next seniors doing You'll Never Walk Alone. And of course the Extravaganza ended with the beautiful patriotic finale. Jana Cline and Vivian Williams were announced as next year's head Majorettes and Joe Tanner as the 1979-80 Drum Major. 48 Stage Band crescendos with big sound. The room was decorated with green and gold streamers in a lovely false ceiling. The tables were adorned with fish net and soft glowing candles. The palm tree and fountain added to the romantic atmosphere. The evening's excitement climaxed as Junior Class president Dale Lovell announced the 1979 Prom queen to be Cindy Wynn flanked by her worthy court Pat Moore and Teresa Lee. Then it was the lovely walk in the night air for the Grand March. The driveway was illuminated by candles adding a romantic glow to the evening sky and couples strolled along to the music of the prom theme. Junior mothers helped make the after-Prom a great success by providing tropical fruit and other foods in keeping with our theme. In addition local service clubs donated lovely door prizes and the traditional prom paddles. Their generosity was greatly appreciated. Our Paradise ended as the clock struck three in the morning. Our thanks to the junior class for a successful fantasy evening. Senior Class President Janis Brown thanks Junior Class for a great prom. Mr. Mullens addressed the class in a way they could understand very exceptionally. With his congratulations and all the congratulations of friends and family, our senior class received their diplomas and Winchester Community High School proudly greeted their newest alumni. The Class of 79 marched forward and received a yellow rose from class sponsored, Cris Fine and Robert Stump. Gold robes, bobbing tassels, and the diplomas were to prove to the world that we really did it! We were sent on our way to a new future. A future that we will determine its fate. With the words of Rev. Thomas: The sun is rising on a new beginning.” Never give up your dream! 54 W MW 56 We’ve Got Tonight Theme for the 1979 annual FHA Sweetheart Dance was We've Got Tonight . The dance was held on Saturday February 10. This gave the girls a chance to ask their sweethearts for a date. Students enjoyed dancing to the sounds of Trade Winds . This dance was semi-formal and the styles varied from formals to discos. The Commons was decorated with bluestar paper streamers, silver stars, and a crystal ball was hung from the center of the ceiling. This gave the Commons a romantic atmosphere. The refreshments served were fruit kabobs, appetizers, and punch. This dance was a success with 225 people in attendance. 58 Odds and Ends UPPER LEFT Stephan Ferdinand is a foreign exchange student from St Augustin Germany. Student Council held their annual Christmas classroom decoration contest, and as an added attraction S.C. held a drawing for a date with a football player and a cheerleader. For an evening at the movie Superman Dale Lovell chose Christie Klem for th date and Karen Cox chose Gary Jenkins. S.C. also promoted the new lunch program. After Spring break students had the choice of 3 lunch lines. The newest line consisted of a sandwich, french fries, and milkshake. Carnation Day gave students a chance to send a flower to special friends and sweethearts. Carnations were red, pink, and white. In the Fall there begins Donut Days. Before school S.C. feeds the student body with milk and donuts for a nominal fee. 69 Exceptional in our ways ' There was various new experiences for many of us. On October 4, the annual Miss Mardi Gras Pageant was held in the WCHS auditorium. Out of ten girls from the surrounding communities, WCHS came out on top. Cindy Wynn was crowned Mardi Gras Queen and Hillary Buckley was fourth runner-up. Moving along to October 13, we Seniors won second place in Spirit Stick competition during Homecoming. This was the closest we had come to receiving it since our freshman year when we won first place. Also this year Lettie Teague was honored by being a Commended Student. During the winter months when wrestling started, the Seniors had only one person participating which was our own Rick Stewart. Well, the Seniors could just go on and on about their accomplishments. Let it suffice the Seniors were Exceptional . One of the most important political events, was the Middle East Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt. Another political event which will have lasting memories throughout the world was the first trip to the United States from China. Also a major happening concerning foreign affairs was the overthrow of Iranian Government. A very tragic and terrifying event occurred in the fall of 1978 when 900 cult members and followers of Jim Jones in Guyanna committed mass suicide. We heard alot of news about this event because Jim Jones was from Lynn, Indiana. Also in the fall of '78 the Catholic Religion suffered the loss of Pope John Paul and gained a worldwide figure; Pope John Paul II; the first pope from Poland. An eight year fight with cancer ended Tuesday, April 24, 1979, when Marvella Bayh, wife of Senator Birch Bayh, passed away. She was beloved by all Ameri- cans, especially Hoosiers. 1979 was a year of new happenings around the world and different changes that effect us here in America. One that we all don't want to remember, but one we are sure will never be forgotten; the price of gasoline from 70$ to $1.00. There were many other tragedies that occurred throughout the United States such as the floods in Mississippi, the killings in Chicago, bombings in Speedway, Indiana, and the leaking of the Nuclear Power Plant at. Three Mile Island. TIM COLLINS DEBRA CELESTE COX: FHA 2,3; Mixed Chorus 3. We planned a Senior Skip Day for Wednesday, March 14, 1979 seventy-nine days before graduation. The 'big day' had been planned for about two months. The halls were filled with talk of who wasn't and who was. If you weren't, were you really a Senior? And if you were, where were you going? Gary Jarrett, the best hall stander we ever had, enjoys a few seconds in the hall by himself. As the days passed parties and shopping trips were planned, everyone was looking forward to not going to school. Well, the administration heard of our big plans and they called a special class meeting. We all knew what was to be discussed, because for two or three days the teachers were telling us we couldn't miss this important test and so on. After the class meeting our Skip Day became just another School Day. f The All Mighty $$ What's it cost to be a Senior? May is the season for the Prom where the guys take their favorite Lady ' and they hope the night won't end in a Tragedy. While the band played Hold the Line' the girls thought to themselves Don't Cry Outloud because he will surely stop stepping on my feet and I Will Survive. Throughout the night somehow everything went well; nothing could go wrong Knock On Wood . The commons was decorated beautifully, and the decorations went along well with the theme which was Two Tickets To Paradise . The guys weren't acting like themselves, but instead pretending to be a Macho Man . The girls began to cry, as the night ended and the guys thinking You Needed Me wiped their tears dry. At the end of the night we were very tired because we all danced like a Hot Child In The City. This was our last Prom but a beautiful one to remember. Each senior was asked to state his or her favorite three songs for the 1978-79 school year. Although this is a description of our Prom it is also a list of the Top Ten tunes. The girls are wearing more dresses and skirts for the feminine look. And dress or high-heeled and clogs are in fashion As far as hair styles go everyone is getting a permanent for that soft and curly style. The long and short are both in fashion this season. The skirt length has been knee-lenght or longer. Materials were thin and frilly for a really dressy look. Even the blue jeans outfits are dressier than ever with the jeans fitted all the way down and rolled up cuffs. The shoes are boys themselves are affected by styles. They were wearing more dress pants with dressier shirts with no collar. In hair styles the long hair is out. Instead men wear their hair shorter and often styled. The evening hours (remember the Angle didn't open till 8:00 or 9:00 P.M.) weren't always calm and peaceful. Many have different memories of those nights spent listening to Rush, Shock, etc. If things were not moving at the Angle, seniors traveled back home towards Union City and The Hat -still in Ohio so they could obtain you know what. Although smaller and newer, The Hat offered the same atmosphere and activities as its much older counterpart in Greenville. Before students left for either Ohio or some favorite spot in Muncie, they filled up with pizza, doritos, and potato chips washed down with Mt. Dew, Pepsi, or Coke. But what they anticipated and what WC life was really like, were two different things. Some Freshmen felt that the change from Jr. High and Sr. High wasn't that bad. The teachers were nice, the homework wasn't quite as hard as expected, and with sports and other activities it wasn't quite the Pits . Also with bomb threats, dress up days and convos, school was made a little more interesting day by day. And the food . . . Well, all in all the Class of '82 have had a good year. And even found the food enough to get by on. They gave it all they had, but just wasn't enough, except for the booby prize. The Class of '82 might have ended up with the questionable honor because of lack of experience. On occasion they dropped a body in the Body Pass game or snatched the wrong shoe in the Shoe Grab game. Nonetheless the Freshman class gained experience and look forward to the following years of Fun and Games. Besides, spending a day under the clouds is better than being in the classroom. The Juniors sold concessions at the ball games, and they also sold cushions to raise money for the prom. They worked very hard to make the prom a success. The theme was Two Tickets To Paradise , and the band was Rendezvous. Everyone enjoyed the after-prom with entertainment performed by the Shock band. As always every class participated in Fun and Games. The Juniors joined in all the games, but just couldn't come through with a successful showing. They finally finished third in overall competition. After all points were totaled, the Juniors placed third in Homecoming. .'.inn Juniors Welcome New Sponsor Teena Adams, Bob Almonrode, Kim Anderson, Suzanne Anderson, Rose Antonio, Chris Armstrong Sherm Armstrong, Lois Baldridge, Dewana Bates, Norman Bates, Brenda Bemis, Leslie Blair, Penny Blansett, Annette Bosworth Kathy Bowden, Dan Bradburn, Lori Brenton, Dawn Brown, Carlton Brumfield, Chuck Brumley, Daren Bush, Diana Byrd Susie Cheesman, Greg Clevenger, Jana Cline, Tina Coalter, Carol Cochran, Marita Coffman, Ray Conley, Paul Cornett Dee Cortner, Dave Covert, Cheryl Cox, Denise Cox, Karen Cox, Karen Cummings, Randy Deboy, Denise Dunham Lori Durbin, Dean Edwards, Jackie Evens, Nancy Felton, Jack Ferguson, Charles Fifer, John Fisher, Randy Garland 94 UPPER LEFT, Smile, you're on Candid Camera, Jana and Christie gladly pose for this picture. After 11 Years And Many Changes; Dr. Glenn Retires Dr. Glenn has been the Superintendent of Randolph County Schools for 11 years, and in this time Dr. Glenn has done many things to improve the school corporation. He feels that the education of the students had improved over the years due to the fact that more teachers have masters degrees or higher degrees and none have less than the bachelors degrees. One of the most pleasing improvements, according to Dr. Glenn, has been to see the individualized reading program in the elementary schools. Dr. Glenn says he is happy with the transportation, equipment, and personnel. Dr. Glenn only planned to stay in teaching long enough to get funds to finish work toward a medical degree, but he found that education was what he wanted in a career. He found working with and for youth so rewarding that he made it his career and has spent 31 years as superintendent of school systems. Among his many achievements and honors are: life member of the Indiana Congress of PTA, and many, many more. Some of his community activities include: Member and past president of Rotary, former member of Lions Club and Local President, member of the Methodist Church, and Chamber of Commerce. After his retirement, Dr. Glenn states that he and his wife plan to remain in the Winchester community. School Board Urges Repairs on Tennis Courts This year's newly elected Randolph Central School Board is composed of President, Lowell Mock; Vice-President, Jean Keever; Secretary, Joe Wolfe; and Members at Large, Stanley Hendrickson and Chris Talley. The major topic discussed was the construction of new tennis courts. The construction will begin after the girls' tennis season is completed. Although, this will take away the playing facilities for the summer, the courts will finally be up to standard. 98 Self-Respect Says Adm. Mr. Valandingham has finished another year as principal at WCHS. When interviewed Mr. Valandingham was quoted as saying that this year he has been pushing and striving for students to have self-respect. He thinks if the students have self-respect they will have respect for oth- ers, and take on more responsibility. Perhaps with self-respect the students would take pride in their class work and achieve the academic excellence Mr. Valandingham stresses as so important in school. Mr. Valandingham also said that there have been some very good changes such as the addition of the new cafeteria line and the implementation of a new absence policy. All-in-all Mr. Valandingham and the administration have had a trying, but good year, which means ironing out each problem as it arises. Mr. James Mock, assistant Principal, is pictured here working with Mr. Val. Mrs. Betty Howell, Corporation Bookkeeper. Teachers: Shedding The Light Teachers. When we students, any time, hear this word, our reaction frequently is not one of total joy. But on the other hand, where would we be without these teachers? Teachers help us discover and apply different areas of learning of the basic tools we have to use in life and utilize these areas to develop a well-rounded person and fullfilling future. Their guidance and experience helps the student decide where to channel his interests and abilities that will insure him the future he desires. From the 1ST day of school until graduation the daily interaction between the student and the teacher provides the basis for his development and advancement through life. During his years at W.C. he has been very helpful in working on the prom and the musicals. He has helped with every musical that has been performed at W.C. He has also been involved with the prom helping in some way. What he has enjoyed most about teaching at W.C. is the association with the students. He also worries about the students not taking advantage of school like they used to. After he retires, Mr. Fidler plans to go ice fishing, and do a little farming and gardening. He also plans to relax and enjoy life. ABOVE LEFT: Mr. Fidler prepares the sacks for the sack race during Fun and Games. MIDDLE LEFT: Miss Ritchey is shown here caring for one of her many plants. So he may experience a mortal life. and through this period of smiles and strife. Prepare himself to Return as he Came, For birth and death Are in essence the same, For both are fashioned by God's mighty hand and, while we cannot understand, We know we are born to die and arise For beyond this world in beauty lies The purpose of living And the ultimate goal.
