t 1 Golden Era Natural Spread . . . Copy . . . Gutter ... Bleeding . .. Grease Pencil. No! We're not talking about crime in the street but rather the terms often used as technical aspects of creating a yearbook. We first received our ad pads, which shows how the businesses want their ads to appear in the yearbook. It takes a great deal of money to put the yearbook together and the ads pay for most of this. In November we met with Mr. Glaze from Herff Jones Company. Mr. Glaze showed us many samples of annual covers. We had to imagine the colors we wanted. Because nobody agreed, choosing the colors and cover was difficult. When it came time to vote everyone agreed on the cover but the colors were more difficult to choose 'cause of a wide variety. It was a hard decision between gold with black letters and black with gold letters. Finally the girls convinced the boys on gold with black letters. The next time we met was in January as we meet as a class. We had to do rough layouts and a final one along with a type sheet. It was fun and finally we were done. The annual staff felt they had completed a book they could be proud of and one for everyone's enjoyment. The annual staff have given you a general view of school life in 77-78 by taking pictures and writing descriptive copy. 108 Girls win first game of Regional . . . We had to shut off many room lights and there were a few exceptions. The creative cooking class could only use gas stoves and one week prepared cold meals. At lunch we ate off paper plates and were served cold lunches. The heat was turned back and many students wore sweaters. 5 Rags To Riches FFA sponsors farmers day, which students dressed as farmers and the best dressed farmer received a free lunch with an extra helping. . . The first sign of spirit was showed by the poster competition, which revolved around movies. We started our usual fun and games night with the bonfire and with Coach Jordan and his team showing their spirit! The competition was tough between classes in all the games. Homecoming night started with the parade in the evening showing the queen candidates and princesses. The four class floats were also in the parade. The football game was a success against Mississinewa Indians 8 to 6. At half time we were told who the queen was, which was Jackie Smoot. We were also told what class won the spirit stick which included posters, fun and games, class floats, and over all spirit. Seniors took it all. The hall was decorated with entering into a garden, walking the path to heaven. Music was provided by Faith for the prom. The after prom band was Shock. Class president, Janice Brown announced the prom queen and her court. The queen, Connie Schop-meyer received roses and was crowned by Mr. Valandingham. The princesses Jackie Lee and Donna Anderson received roses and a gift. The grand march began with Connie escorted by Terry Stewart. There are many thanks to be given to the community and the Junior class and sponsors. In Youth We Learn, In Age We Understand —M. ABOVE RIGHT: Mr. Paul Udell, commencement speaker. LOWER FAR RIGHT CORNER: Mrs. Gardner, sponsor, presents Amy Lowe her rose marking the start of a new tradition. The Class of 1978 marched proudly into a crowded fieldhouse on Thursday, June 1. Graduations are memorable milestones but one particularly unforgettable person was the commencement speaker, television's newscaster, Paul Udell. Mr. Udell obliged all to try in life, that wealth was not always the key to happiness. He wished all graduates luck but most of all love . Then individually the graduates ascended onto a carpeted platform to receive their diplomas and one red rose. Commencement was ended but at a time like this graduates must feel that life is full of many endings, but in turn it always promises many exciting beginnings. 17 Admini- stration The Faculty sponsors classes, organizations, and are coaches. . . Welcomed this year as New Rookies were Wayne Hedden, Kathy Graham, Larry Long-worth, Pam Mahan, and Paul Young. Most of the rookies feel that the students attitudes are the nicest thing at W.C. The hardest thing seemed to be not enough time in a school day to get everything done that they had planned. Merritt Beck will be the only teacher retiring after teaching at W.C. for 27 years. Mr. Beck attended DePauw, and is a graduate of Ball State. Mr. Beck has contributed much to our school and everyone will always cherish many memories of him. 21 Art: Dena Stierwalt. A year for us . . . Seniors! A year for us to lead, serve, have fun, and work hard together ... a year to make every day count. A year for us to win the spirit stick for the fourth time in a row, to have a snake dance all the way from the courthouse, to create our last sectional skit and display, to attend a Prom that honors us, to make the plans for our long-awaited graduation, and to choose and prepare for our lifetime careers and ambitions. Leading our great class through our last year at WC were: President—Jerry Holt; Vice-President—Kevin Meek; Secretary—Donna Neudecker; Treasurer—Connie Schop-meyer; and sponsors—Mrs. Gardner and Mr. Fabert. We started as young, terrified freshmen, f- 0 S afraid of all the people in the halls around us at W.C. The ball got rolling our sophomore year, and our junior year, we dove in head first with making our prom, Nights Are Forever a great success. Then we became the mighty seniors of W.C. ordering senior keys, commencement announcements, getting our caps and gowns and pulling rank on the underclassmen. At last we see the end nearing, counting the days till graduation. Every time you're in the halls you take a long look at the rows of lockers, brick walls, and classrooms. Where will we be ten years from now? Will we ever forget our year? But, as we leave this building, we are proud, for we are now the alumni of W.C. Juniors were the only ones who had a booth at Mardi Gras which brought them $100. W.C. stu- dents had a lot of fun at this booth throwing water balloons at volunteer teachers. Also juniors kept the high school tradition by selling concessions at the basketball games. They were a sell out at almost every game. Sectional was the week that all juniors joined in the spirit of WCHS by winning the skit contest and coming in second for the Spirit Stick. Aided by Miss Margo Smith, the juniors wrote up a creative skit in which the cast portrayed various members of the basketball team. By computer each basketball player was assigned a fitting cereal like Stuckey Smacks, Alvin Bits, or Special Keesling. The junior really had the student body laughing with Mike Laughman's imitation of Jeff Green and Mike Friend's big hands like those of Joe Hawley. They were the basic black jackets with gold and white insets in the sleeves. The name was on the left with the Falcon word on the right. The pockets were trimmed in gold to set them off. The sophomores were the first class to have a zip up hood in quite a while with a Falcon bird on the back. The sophomore class was led in the '77-78 school year by: Dale Lovell, President; Jana Cline, Secretary; Kim Kepner, Treasurer; Cheryl Cox, V.-President; Mr. Skinner and Mrs. Stierwalt, sponsors. Also the sophomores showed great spirit during sectional season by get- ting 2nd in the skit. Their skit was interpretation of This Is Your Life. Lori Haworth acted as MC. Karen Cox, Kim Kepner, and Jana Cline embarrassed team members by asking such questions as Do you remember the closet in 3rd grade? The skit was a real success and enjoyed by all the student body. During the year, the chapter took a field trip to Eli Lilly Company and the Indiana National Bank, both in Indianapolis, attended the North Central Regional Leadership Conference in Indianapolis and the National Leadership Conference in Denver, Colorado, and learned about their role in the free enterprise system of our local community through a presentation made by Al Harris. February 20-24 was celebrated as FBLA Week with a special activity for each day of the week, and in the spring the annual Awards Dinner was held to honor the senior members and outstanding members in the various areas of business. Also during the 1977-78 year, local president Randy Girton served as Indiana FBLA Executive Vice President. At the State Leadership Conference, the WCHS chapter took many awards. These included: First places—Diana Rees, Accounting I; Kevin Gulley, Accounting II; Kelly Kahle, Stenographer I; Janice Williams, Stenographer II and the FBLA State Scholarship; Connie Schop-meyer. Extemporaneous Speaking; and Denise Dunham, Individual Business Communications. Second places—Randy Girton, Who's Who in FBLA; and the Business Communications Team. Third places—Lori Hart, Job Interview; Randy Girton, Mr. FBLA; Largest Local Chapter; and the Most Outstanding Local Activities Report. Kirk Keever was the recipient of the American Institute of Cooperatives award and Miss Karen King was selected as Indiana FBLA's Most Outstanding Local Adviser. Two special events formed the highlight of the state conference for our local chapter. Based on its programs at the local level and its performance in the various competitive events at the state conference, the chapter was selected as the Indiana FBLA Most Outstanding Chapter. Kirk Keever, local vice president, was elected to the office of State FBLA President for the 1978-79 year. 61 FHA Provides Informative Program for School-Aged Parents The 1977-78 program for FHA involved the problems of The School-Age Parent . Filmstrips, presented by Parents' Magazine Films, Inc. and purchased by FHA, were used during each regular meeting. A Cancer Awareness program was planned for all FHA members and their mothers and mothers of all other junior and senior girls. This was co-sponsored by FHA, the Family Health classes, and the Randolph County Chapter of Cancer Society. FHA also sponsored their Mrs. Claus project by providing food for four families from the school community. They also held their annual Dads' Night Out, Mother-Senior dinner, and the Sweetheart Dance. The Chapter contacted the State Highway Dept, to secure the directional signs for the high school and for the fieldhouse. 62 63 Student Council Hosts a Leadership Workshop The Student Council held a leadership workshop on December 2, with Randolph County Student Councils participating. There were sessions on leadership, communication, and how to be a better Student Council member, as well as a panel discussion on school problems. Some of the council's other activities this year were a homecoming dance starring Shock , Donut Days in November and March, and several convocations including a magician and a music group called Conglomeration. The officers this year were: Terry Stewart, Pres.; Betsy Brueckheimer, V.-Pres.; Hillary Buckley, Sec'y; and Jackie Smoot, Treas. The Student Council's sponsors were Mrs. Chalfant and Mr. Howell. ABOVE: Tom Mullens, of Earlham College, speaks about leadership at the Student Council's workshop. His subject was The Bland Can't Lead the Bland . The grade point average requirement rose 2l z points, and now any number of eligible juniors and seniors may be inducted into the Honor Society. In the induction ceremony, on Jan. 4, 28 new members joined the group. The officers this year were: Kevin Meek, Pres.; Stan Hernley, V.-Pres.; Elizabeth Edwards, Sec'y.; Lori McKnight, Treas.; Vicki Miller, Historian; Janice Williams, Sec'y. (2nd semester). 65 Fellowship of Christian Athletes This year eight boys attended the FCA National Conference at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant for one week. In October the FCA boys book a group of elementary boys to a Ball State football game and in December they held a Christmas Party for them. Food baskets were provided for two needy families in Winchester. They also sold Tootsie Rolls during the school year. This year's officers were Gerry Keesling, Bruce Anderson, Gary Jarrett, and Jerry Holt. The sponsor for the boys was Mr. Bush and the sponsor for the girls FCA was Mrs. Barnell. bfa Future Farmers of America 1977-78 proved to be a successful competitive year for the FFA. The group attended the National convention, held in Kansas City, where the poultry judging team placed second, the entomology team placed first, and the dairy judging team took first and second. Also, Randolph County's top five dairy judges were chosen from the Randolph Central chapter. The FFA also attended the Louisville Farm Machinery Show where they sold cider, popcorn, soybeans, and wild morning glory, sent two students to leadership camp, and started the school's first forestry team. Officers for this year were President, Mark Burkhardt; Vice President, Chris Peacock; Treasurer, Gary Braun; Secretary, Dave Wysong; Reporter, Greg Chalfant; Sentinel, Brian Fields; and Sweetheart, Donna Neudecker. The new FFA sponsor was Larry Longworth. Health Careers The Health Careers Club started off the year by adopting a constitution and getting a state charter. In September, President Judy Conn and Julie Smith attended the state convention for the election of state officers. In October, the IU School of Nursing held a student health career day. Five members attended the workshops and displays, designed to educate future nurses. A Dental Health Career Day was held at WC featuring Dr. V.R. Williams and Shaunda Hill Morrisey. 67 Office and Library Aides Help School The office and library receive much help from students who are willing to work without scholastic credits. The office help must answer the phone, hunt teachers, hunt students, run off copies, and run errands. They help make the job of running the school much easier. The library staff did some preparation this year to become better qualified assistants. They were taught the workings of the library and the various reference materials. They later took a test over the operations of the library and the group did very well. 68 Annual Staff Presents Golden Era Typing, counting, fitting, writing, meeting deadlines, and having a good time at it, were the jobs of the 1978 Annual Staff. Dave Cortner, Brenda Ashley, and Karen Reno handled the introduction and divider pages, establishing a theme and carrying it through the book. Donna Neudecker and Amy Lowe had the job of sorting hundreds of postage stamp-size photos for the student picture sec- tions. Kevin Meek and Fay Haney worked with lots of group shots, candid shots, and written copy in the activities section. Brenda Wagner and Kenny Jordan chased coaches, collected scores, and completed a fine sports section. Also, many thanks to Miss Polly Roberts, our sponsor, whose help was indispensable in the production of the '78 Annual. Falcon Views : New Radio Show The WC radio show made a comeback this year with the 15 minute program called Falcon Views . The show went on WIUC every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Mrs. Betty Schafer sponsored the group which consisted of juniors Scott West, Hillary Buck-ley, Pat McLaughlin, and Beckie Schafer, and senior Kenny Jordan. 69 FEA: Future Educators in Action WC's First Year in Model State Legislature The purpose of the Model State Legislature was to approximate the workings of the state legislature. Members attended I.U. East to select a Governor and Lt. Governor, organize the leadership of the House and Senate, and assign bills written by students to committees. This was followed by committee discussion and actions on the bills. On the final day, they met in the House and Senate chambers in the state capitol to act on the bills reported from committee. Those bills which passed both houses, after going to a conference committee, were sent to the governor. Plaques were awarded to Joe Tanner and Beth Wolf for outstanding committee members. Those students that won leadership positions were Scott Spradling, Jerry Holt, Kevin Meek, and Amy Harrell. Jill Casperson and Dave Wysong were chosen as committee chairmen. Dave Wysong was also a member of the Conference Committee. Michele Wysong and Joe Tanner were chosen to serve on next year's planning committee. 70 Wrestlerettes Cheer on Matmen This was the second year for the wrestlerettes. They held a party at the beginning of the season for the wrestlers. These girls attended both the away and home matches to cheer our boys on to a winning year. 71 4th Miraculous All-School Play The Miracle Worker was this year's all-school play. Helen's antics aimed at avoiding Annie (Kathy Hyre) kept the audience laughing while the touching story of the freeing of a mind confined by blindness and deafness was brought home. Helen Keller (Tina Haviza) was spoiled by her parents, Capt. Keller (Dave Thornburg), and his wife, Kate (Sherry Prescott). This frustrated Annie even more than heckling from Helen's half-brother James (Kevin UPPER MIDDLE: Amory's stuffy southern character and Kevin's rendition of Buffalo Girl provided the play with some of its more humorous moments. Annie came to the Kellers from the Perkins Institution for the Blind, where Annie herself had gained her sight through surgery. She found it very hard to say goodbye to her friends and her teacher, Mr. Anagnos (Pat McLaughlin). The students that did the play especially enjoyed the flying water and scrambled eggs, and Tina's almost walking off the front of the stage in a blindfold. Also, during a dress rehearsal for Morton school, an entire scene was left out. Either thanks to or in spite of these things, the performance was a success and everyone involved should be commended for a fine job. ABOVE: The cast for The Miracle Worker . French Students Enjoy Trip to France The French Club sponsored many different activities this year. The year began by initiating twenty-one new members in a candlelight ceremony. For a money making project they sold giant coloring books. They also were guests at Jay County for an international dinner . Over spring vacation eight French students went to France. The group spent the first five days in Paris visiting famous places such as the Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Sacre Coueur Church on Montmartre Hill. Afternoon shopping sprees through elegant department stores and the not-so-elegant flea markets left most of the group exhausted but happy—and poverty stricken. The students then traveled from Paris, by motorcoach, to the central Loire valley of France where the tour included visits to several historic castles of the Middle Ages; Chambord, Versailles, Chenouceaux, and Azay le Rideau. On the last day of their stay in central France, the group learned the methods used in making French wine when they visited the famous caves of Saumur. The motorcoach then traveled through the almost fantasyland of Brittany to the resort town of St. Malo on the Atlantic Coast and to the unforgettable island of Mont St. Michel next to the beaches of Normandy on the British Channel. On the final day of their stay in France, the group returned home leaving the green and flowering lands of France. uraffi ii i ? 'i V Jki 74 75 La Tour Eiffel A boat ride down the Seine River. El Club del Espanol The Spanish Club started the year with their annual initiation of new members. The theme was Dia de los Muertos, which is equivalent to All Souls' Night or Halloween. The officers dressed as ghouls to greet the new members. In December, the French and Spanish Club held their Christmas celebration in which skits were presented, members sang in Spanish and French, and French and Spanish pastries were served. In the spring the members enjoyed a 3 Marias Party in which all the ice cream they could eat was served and they also learned different dances from Mexico, Peru, and Columbia. There were a total of 104 members in this year's club. The 1977-78 Spanish officers were: Debbie Ferguson, Louise Junco, Jerry Holt and Karen Grimm. 76 Cheerleaders Spirit Boost Student Morale The 1977-78 cheerleaders attended cheerleading camp at Owensboro, Kentucky. They won the Spirit Stick and were selected as the second best squad. If enthusiasm lacked in the stands, it didn't with the cheerleaders. The comedy show centered around four principles. Nathan Detroit, played by Keith Green, manages a floating crap game behind his fiancee's back while constantly working to avoid the clutches of matrimony. His girlfriend, Adelaide, has been engaged to Nathan for fourteen years and is played by Hillary Buck-ley. She occupies her time dancing at the Hot Box night club and chasing her would-be spouse. Juli Smith portrays the beautiful missionary, Sister Sarah Brown. While trying to save the mission, Sarah meets the debonair professional gambler Sky Masterson, played by Dave Rook, who sweeps her off her feet and off to Cuba for dinner. The show's funniest moments involved the crap game itself, as Nathan's assistants Nicely Nicely Johnson (Bane Shockley) and Benny Southstreet (Craig McCoy), as well as gamblers like Big Jule (Donnie Simmons), Harry the Horse (Scott McKiiight) and Rusty Charlie (Steve Barga) try to avoid losing and or meeting up with Lt. Brannigan (Kevin Meek) of the N.Y.P.D. Other large roles were Arvide Abernathy, (Pat McLaughlin) Sarah's lovable grandfather, and General Cartwright (Cheryl Thomas). The show included excellent renditions of A Bushel And A Peck , Take Back Your Mink , Luck Be A Lady , and Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat . This very fun musical ended happily as Nathan finally marries Adelaide and Sarah marries and converts Sky, and the WC vocal dept, chalks up a 14th successful musical. 82 Excellent supporting roles were played by Junior Craig McCoy and Senior Bane Shockley, as Benny Southstreet and Nicely Nicely Johnson, respectively. Here they discuss the crap game with Nathan. ABOVE, Left waiting at the church for years, Nathan Detroit's lovable girlfriend Adelaide was depicted beautifully by Hillary Buckley, while the missionary, Sister Sarah, was brought to life by Juli Smith. UPPER RIGHT, Nathan Detroit receives a gift from Adelaide on their fourteenth anniversary ... of their engagement. BELOW, Adelaide is the star of the show at the Hot Box as she is seen here in the song and dance Take Back Your Mink . Band Marches to Third State Championship.
