FUN TIMES HAPPY TIMES ... FUN TIMES ... OUR TIMES ... Our two exchange students, Martha Arcos from Columbia and Ceorge Westlander from Sweden, have enjoyed the activities and events of our school. George, an avid tennis player, participated on the varsity team and was a member of French and Spanish Club. He also played golf for the first time this year. Martha, who likes to cook and sew, enjoyed her Home Economics classes and the music of the Extravaganza. She also was a member of Spanish Club. We've really enjoyed having them exchange their customs with us. • • sawn AddVH • ‘ sawn ano • • sawn Nna • HAPPY TIMES ... FUN TIMES ... OUR TIMES ... The couples entered through a torch lit walkway, and passed over a bridge with a babbling brook beneath. Once inside they found a meadow area. Music by Good Feelings presently filled the commons decorated with wall murals, giant daises, and floating butterflies. The lighted tables had programs of pastel green, yellow, blue, or pink awaiting all the ladies. Punch glasses, a donation by Anchor Hocking, were a gift from the junior class to all present. The highlight of the evening was crowning Julia McCoy queen attended by Mary Swindell and Marla Macy. Chris Milligan, junior president, escorted Miss McCoy in the grand march about the school. The local men's organizations again provided an exciting after prom with music and many wonderful prizes. In addition junior mothers served a great meal. 12-Prom Prom-13 This Was Our Year ... Graduation came on May 29,1975 at 8:00 P.M. in the Old Fieldhouse. It was a warm evening in the crowded gym with babies crying and spectators fanning themselves with programs. Slowly the seniors made a dignified entrance down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance. Sandy Chalfant gave a prayer followed by Marilyn Addington's introduction of Rev. Breaker who reminded graduates that their diplomas were heavy with expectations. The choir sang the poignant song Halls of Ivy. Conan Wallace introduced Rev. Wick the guest speaker from Lafayette. His was a brief humorous message but carried a very serious theme that all must meet the demands of his future life and fulfill the conditions to meet the demands placed upon him. Next it was Leighanne Hahn's turn to review the class history pointing out the highlights of the past four years. Finally graduates were announced and presented diplomas. Proud parents, friends, and relatives flashed cameras as each approached to receive his or her diploma. Then it was over except for the tears and congratulations. We wish the seniors the best in the future. Those who stay at WC will miss them as they pass through the halls. 14-Graduation Graduation—15 This was my year ... the band won the state contest, the school excelled making many memorable moments ... the musical was again a great success ... school spirit and pride was running high ... the sectional week was an exciting time ...I was voted best personality and most spirited by my fellow band members ... the band went to the Kentucky Derby and Indianapolis 500 ... started off the year with a victory at Delaware Fair ... I came close to my friends. Conan Wallace Look around the halls of WC. Then ask yourself what these walls hold. I can tell you what they hold for me. They hold friendship, happiness, and an open door for a beautiful life and future. Through this year I have met and gotten to know so many great people. My friends have become even more special. The people I knew before have just been so kind and terrific. This school holds an open door for any person's future, and they hold the key. How do they hold the key? The key is the effort they are willing to put into school. This year is special mainly because it's another moment of a beautiful world and life. Sharon Bates This was my year ... I fell in love . .. A close regional loss ... skipping school to get a haircut and the barber's sick ... losing some friends, gaining others ... Rossburg a Go-Go and the morning after... deciding which college to attend ... a great musical and extravaganza ... going to all the parties only to regret it the next morning ... all the dances and the prom ... the usual curriculum of seniors. Senior 75 This was my year ... I made many new friends I will cherish for years, I had a great year with grades and classes, a very special evening for me was Homecoming, as Mr. Jones placed the crown on my head. Band played an important role in my last year at WC especially being 1 ... getting ready for Extravaganza is a pain but it always pays off with smiles and tears. I guess this year was special for many reasons, but most of all I was a Senior and had a beautiful family and boyfriend to make it the greatest year possible. Many plans lie ahead with marriage in August and going to college in Kentucky to complete a life's dream. But what made this year tremendous was that I placed every activity and problem in God's hands. You know He always knows what's best. 74-75 was a fantastic year for me. To begin it all, band was an exciting new experience. Practices, band camp, contests, all these added to the excitement. To top it off, we even won the State Band Contest. It was such a thrill to hear them announce that the Winchester Community High School Marching Show Band was No. 1 . As the year wore on, we passed through a great football season into an even more rewarding basketball season. Each game brought a feeling of intense anxiety, we sat in the stands knowing that we were watching the best basketball team in the state of Indiana. Even though the results of the tourneys didn't prove that fact, we all knew that our team was better than any of the other schools in the state. This year was absolutely full of wonderful new experiences for me. Homecoming was a time of group work, being together with all my friends, and realizing just how lucky I was to be; attending such a wonderful school as WCHS. Of all the schools I have attended in my life, WCHS has been the most rewarding one ever. It's provided me with a fantastic senior year. Becky Butler Ann Anderson This was my year, just about everything that I wanted to happen, happened ... from winning the conference in football to beating Hammond and winning the Holiday Tourney. Being a part of a 12th ranked basketball team that won the conference and sectional. Baseball was something that will always be remembered by me. Not only was sports special to me, but a certain girl was always greeting me with a smile and laugh that kept my spirits up when I was feeling down. When I look back on this year I remember a school unity which this school has never had before. Fun and Games Night, pep sessions, and dances added to the fun which is important to any student. This year, I was the luckiest guy in the world. Thad Abel This was my year. Beating Hammond at the Huntington Tourney ... Learning how to tap dance for the musical... getting my own car ... telling stories to children in the elementary schools ... having the most fantastic basketball season ever... Learning that I am equal to everyone else and no one can put me down ... going to colleges and finding out what it will be like ... celebrating after the sectional victory ... getting ready for graduation ... musical practices after school ... arguing with Mr. Kenny in Econ class ... celebrating at our last fun night. Senior 75 1 came this fall expecting a regular year. But then some really great things happened. We, the WC band went marching into a state championship. I saw WC coming out on top and receiving statewide recognition in many ways. The concessions, prom, and Homecoming, Sectional, and Regional activities were great. And greatest of all was a trip to Puerto Rrco! The Extravaganza, Kentucky Derby, and Indy 500 and once in a lifetime chances I'll never forget having in my Junior Year. Debbie Thompson This year was exceptionally special to me. It was the final year of twelve years containing joy, sorrow, disappointment, and fulfillment. The band winning first place in the state added to this year's excitement, and the great record of the basketball team made my final year in high school something unforgettable. Being a senior in school is an experience that one always remembers. Going to Ros-sburg, being the guest at the Prom, holding back tears on the last day in the shining halls of WC and taking the diploma, that you have earned, in your hand creates a memory that will never fade. This year has been my reward for four years of hard work, achievement, and loyalty. Scott Kahle This year is special because being juniors we got to plan the Prom, work at concessions and really work together as a class for the first time since we became high school students. Ruth Ellen Stephenson This was my year .... Everything has seemed to go in my favor... I have been able to open my eyes more to the beauty around me ... the beauty of new and exciting experiences, like those very exciting moments during basketball season, and during football season, Mardi Gras ... The beauty of seeing a sparkle in someone's eye like the children's happiness from our speech class trips to the elementary schools ... The beauty of accomplishments worked hard for. State Music contest, No, No, Nan-nette, Sectional Victory ... and most of all, the beauty of everlasting friendships, moments of sharing and caring and loving that will never be forgotten. Mary Swindell This year is special just because it's this year. All the excitement that comes with being a Junior. Prom plans, concessions, and of course the feeling of becoming a Senior. But most of all it's special because as the years go on you grow closer and closer to your friends. Seniors-51 52-Senkxs Popcorn and Proms Go Hand in Hand Junior year is the busiest year and our Juniors started off their year by selling concessions at football games. Homecoming was the week that all Juniors joined in the spirit of WCHS by winning the poster contest. During the basketball season they raffled off a stereo purchased from Durbins to receive more money in order to promote a larger bank account. High seller for the raffle was Jeff Bemis selling 100 tickets in one night and over 500 during the duration of the raffle, Tim Kindred coming in second. The drawing was held on December 21, 1974 at the home game played with Adam Central. The winner of the stereo was Renee Stover. This money and concession money went towards the prom entitled Summer Breeze. The activities of the week made for a lively and exciting atmosphere. The halls were decked with posters bearing spirited messages to help back the Falcons. Fun Night proved itself to be another chilly, exciting evening of fun and competition between classes. Rainy, dreary Homecoming night found all fans present to back their favorite Falcon team. Ann Anderson was crowned queen of the Homecoming festivities, and spirits were still high as fans reflected on the feeling of pride in their hearts for the Falcons. FHA Says Falcons Aren't Cool Without a The largest Future Homemakers of America chapter in the State of Indiana kept busy this year by cleaning up the W.C. parking lot and making signs encouraging fellow students to do the same. The slogan was Falcons aren't cool without a clean school. The FHA was also involved in the treating of students and teachers to cupcakes at lunch during FHA week. Their many other activities included their traditional Christmas caroling party, Daddy Date Night, and the Senior Banquet. The highlight of the year became the sweetheart dance, Just You and Me. Clean School. Sophomores Freshmen FHA Members-71 The FHA officers this year were front row: Treasurer Kim Barret, Secretary Carla Pflasterer, Vice-President Debbie Smith, and President Amy Robbins. FBLA Provides School Supply to Student Body The Future Business Leaders of America was initiated at Winchester Community High School during the 1974-75 school year. In February over seventy students enrolled in the business curriculum were initiated in an impressive candlelight service with the state advisors, Dr. Florence Grunkemeyer and Dr. Richard Kelly of Ball State University assisting in the service. The main service project for the FBLA was the FBLA Bookstore. The purpose of the project was to supply the student body with a means of obtaining school supplies. The project has been quite successful with the WCHS student body. Through this club, the business students will learn more about business, economic conditions of the community, and carrer planning. 72—FBLA The French and Spanish Keep Their Clubs' Traditions French Club: Keeping with the French theme. During the initiation, the initiates traveled through the cracker crumb, coast of France. The initiates were put on trial; and the consequence was to dance the Can-Can. The French club sponsored their annual Christmas party with the Spanish Club. On the agenda was: volleyball, dances. and skits. The French sponsored a Bake Sale of French pastries; such as Cream puffs, Eclairs, Tarts, Chocolate Ribbons and many more. Some members of the club took a trip to Quebec during the Easter vacation. Spanish Club: The Spanish Club initiation was based on the theme The Spanish Inquisition . During the initiation, the initiates ate hot peppers, colored marshmellows, then they kissed Terry Retz' toes. The annual Christmas party was held with the French Club. The Spanish activities were Spanish dances, skits, and traditional dishes prepared by the students. Pinatas filled with candy were broken. The Spanish students attended Ball State's Musical production of Man de La Mancha. During the spring the students also collected food and clothing for the children in Equador. The highlight was a trip to Puerto Rico. French and Spanish Clubs-73 Honor Society Works to Help the Community The Honor Society helped the community in several ways. They donated to the Susie Green Fund Winchester Mission and also to the Tarter Family after the burning of their home. The Honor Society also gave a party for the under-priviledged children of our community. In addition they put on a dance for the student body. The members stuffed themselves with pizza at the annual party the juniors gave for the seniors. The officers were: Dane Starbuck president; Mary Swindell, Vice president; Marla Macy, Secretary; Linda Huffman, Treasurer; and Ann Anderson, Historian. 74-Honor Society The 1974 school play, Winnie the Pooh, was an unqualified success. This charming and delightful story, which appealed to both children and adults, drew a larger crowd than we have had for several years. The story concern Winnie, a little bear, who loves honey, and his adventures in trying to acquire this. His friends, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Kanga, and Roo, also became involved and the little forest animals almost stole the show. Winnie the Pooh Was Here Following the preformance cast members went out into the audience to shake hands with the children. To the delight of play actors some children even wanted their autographs, and one child gushed, I just love you. Piglet! School Play—75 WINCHESTER COMMUNITY Students Govern Through the Student Council The Student Council took on traditional projects this year such as the Homecoming dance, Christmas decorations for the school, and the community-wide Susie Green Fund project. In April, they sponsored a county dance for the second consecutive year featuring “Roosevelt Johnson's Heart, Body, and Soul. The members of FCA attend different camps around the country as they have done for the past two years. The camp in Rome, Georgia is an example of one camp attended by members. FFA The FFA has been prosperous this year. To start the year, they harvested their farm plot and sold the crops. Then the FFA had a cider sale, cider having been made by the club members. They sold popcorn and bought a tractor with profits. Also they had soil, judging teams, dairy teams and a crop judging team. In the future they have beef, sheep and swine contests planned. The FFA attended the District banquet and hope to have a banquet of their own. Chess Club Library Staff Flelps the Librarian and Students FEA Learns By Teaching FEA started their opening meeting with guest speaker George Westlander. He explained the differences of Sweden to the United States. Our next meeting was a combination of Christmas Party and Initiation of the new members. Mr. Joseph Casey was our guest speaker. Our final speaker was Marta Acros from Columbia S.A. explaining the differences in teaching requirements. Our year will close with the election of new officers for the 75-76 year. Meetings were held every 3rd Tuesday during the second mod- ule. Total membership was 42. Mrs. Myers and Mr. Fabert were the sponsors. Officers for the 1974-1975 school year were: Vicki Sipe-President, Scott Kahle-Vice President, Debbie Thompson—Secretary, Jama Wolf —Treasurer, and Linda Moore—Historian. Students Enjoy Radio Show Our Small Voices Radio Program featured Donna Wilson, Marla Macy, Conan Wallace, and Jeff Woolf. Among the more memorable shows were working on a 10-week wrap-up show at school until 6:05 before the show at 6:15, Conan's funny faces and Jeff's growling stomach causing Donna and Marla to lose control over the air, and realizing at 6:14 that we brought the wrong tape. In an effort to keep the student body and faculty informed on the current events taking place at W.C., the Golden Times staff circulated quarterly issues of the school newspaper. As the girls patiently awaited the arrival of their new sweaters, they found themselves learning to yell with diaphrams they did not realize they had. The senior program became the highlight of the season, with poster size, shaded by Sandy Chal-fant, of the senior members of the team. Chris Pflasterer was elected to lead the block as captain and Falcons Sent To Victory By Block and Representatives Vicki Culy as co-captain. Falcon Board members elected as representatives this year were seniors Patti Vore and Mary Swindell, juniors Becky Moyer and Susie Shaneyfelt, sophomores Ellen Make and Julie Stewart, and freshmen Louise Junco and Kelly Kahle. The Falcon Board treated the team to a delicious sectional breakfast. A large block and boisterous voices helped support the tremendous falcon team this season. As a treat for both the old folks and the Golden Tones, they have sung at the County Home on special oc-cassions. Memories are always held dear to the Golden Tones, like the time all seven girls rode in a four passenger car. On another oc-cassion the Golden Tones giggled through one presentation as it was so hard to hit their own notes accompanied by a very ill-tuned piano. To become a member, a girl must audition with two tunes before Mr. Buckley. Uppn acceptance, a girl must enroll in private lessons and participate in all voice contests at Ball State University. 82-Concert Choir Golden Tones cessional by the Concert Choir fol-lowed by slides and spiritual music as background. Soloists for the Winter Concert were Charmin Armstrong, Jane Crawford, and Jennifer Barga, all members of the Golden Tones. The Choir also performed for several of the community clubs. Work never stops in the Concert Choir, it just keeps getting more exciting as the year progresses. Ensemble Members Grow Through Song The Mixed Ensemble consists of the Golden Tones and guys from the Boys Glee Club. The Mixed Ensemble performs for the Concerts, but their major function is to perform at the Band Extravaganza. The guys are picked by Mr. Buckley for their singing ability, and ability in expression and movements. The members of the Mixed Ensemble were, left to right, Charmin Armstrong, Jim Wells, Jennifer Barga, Don Staton, Jane Crawford, Mary Swindell, Rick Byrge, Robin Rook, Scott Thomas, Jama Wolf, Steve Reyenga, and Linda Cummings. Ensemble Takes First Place In Contest Mixed Ensemble and Freshmen Girls Glee Club 85 Hilarious, Tap Happy, No. No. Nanette Tap lessons, memorizing lines, searching the country for props: these were the duties the concert choir devoted themselves to very early in the school year. Tryouts for the leading roles ended in victory for Rick Byrge, playing the role of Uncle Jimmy Smith, a bible seller who spreads happiness through money to three lovely girls. Jimmy tries very hard to keep this from his wife Sue, played by Robin Rook. Scott Thomas as Billy Early, the lawyer, attempts to iron out Jimmy's problem, only to get himself deeper into trouble with his own wife, Lucille, played by Jennifer Barga. She leaves Billy because she believes he is playing around with the three girls. Meanwhile Nanette, played by Jama Wolf, has a desire to live the high life although her boyfriend Tom, played by Jim Wells, demands that she settle down and marry him. The three girls are played by Jane Crawford as the shimmier Flora from Frisco, Charmin Armstrong as Winnie from Washington, and Rosetta Craw as Betty from Boston. These three girls cause a lot of trouble for Billy and Uncle Jimmy. Gina Farber added the right touch of humor as she played the maid Pauline. In addition the musical cast would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mr. Charles Buckley, Mrs. Lois Longenbaugh, and Mrs. Donna Jennings for all the time and talent spent in preparing the presentation. With all this talent the musical No. No. Nanette could be nothing but a success. 86-Musical Mucical-87 Hard work, long hours of marching on hot streets, and good leadership combined to spur the WCHS Marching Show Band of 1974-75 Class B to first place in the Stage Band state of Indiana. Leading the champions to fame were director Max Jones, drum majors, Conan Wall- ace and Mark Mullen, and head majorette Paula Fraze. Congratulations to the WC Band from the entire student body. Keep up the good work. Senior Sweaters (Awards) Stage Band and Senior Svveaters-89 Band to 1st Marches Place The band started its long journey in january with many practices during band, after school sectionals, and on individual time. They went further down the road with just two weeks in preparation for the stage. At the end of this first week the stage was complete and by the second week, the band was at their place of destiny. On April 25 and 26, the band put on two great shows with various songs of The Entertainer, TSOP, and the traditional Cherish. The Battle Hymn of the Republic was staged in a wonderful setting with the United States Flag in lights, the majorettes with the nation's colors, and Paula Fraze portraying the Statue of Liberty. Truly, this was a great time of liberty and freedom. Band Extravaganza 91 Defeating number one ranked Hammond ... taking another trip to New Castle ...
