You have met the challenge of the high academic and behavioral standards we have set for you. This has been no small accomplishment! While academic and social standards are deteriorating in this country, we have not let up. We have expected much of you as a student and as a person - and you have come through! l encourage you to continue to set goals. Doing so will make a great difference in your ability to achieve - academically and otherwise. Your goals may shift, and that is fine - as long as ou h ' ' ' ' y ave something out there for which you are striving! Keep in touch with your friends. Some of them will always be part of your life. Let us know how you are doing. Come back to visit. You know that you are always welcome! Sincerely, J. William La elle HEADMASTER - I l l l l F Dedication boa , The Winchendon School is filled with a number of devoted teachers, but this par- ticular teacher has gone three years with- out the acknowledgement which she right- fully deserves. Mrs. Sandra Louise Mar- ston has put both her professional and personal life completely into the educa- tion and care of the Winchendon School students. During the three years of her stay, she has had the task of Yearbook Advisor for two years, and has coached both Girls, Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Golf for , three years. To those she coaches, fespe- cially the girls' volleyball teamj she is known as someone who settles for nothing other than the best. She pushes each of us to achieve at our high- est level, allowing no room for us to limit ourselves in academics or athletics. She has shown us that the words, You can do anything you set your mind ton . . are not just words of wisdom but also words of truth. Students throughout the school see her not only as their teacher, but also as their friend. She always has a quick smile and a kind word, and students know that if they need someone to talk to, she is always there. When not involved with the daily responsibilities of the academic day and athletics, Mrs. Marston main- tains the reputation of one who guides and cares for all of the students as though they were part of her own family. This year's dedication goes to Mrs. Sandra L. Mar- ston with appreciation. On behalf of the Yearbook Staff and the Class of '94, thank you for all of your time, effort and devo- tion! ' 1 - 5 ,.',, . .J The Winchendon School ly '1 ' r The Winchendon School is lo- cated in Winchendon, a small town nestled in Central Massachusetts. Winchendon is a picturesque and historic area. The school is located at the former sight of the Toy Town Tavern. The Tavern was re- nowned for its beautiful 18 hole golf course, which the school now operates and its gorgeous sur- rounding scenery set near the base of Mt. Monadnock. The resort was also the favorite of the foliage lov- ers, as the area is ablaze with color every autumn. The school grounds are also very unique. There are a number of very old buildings which are owned by the school to go along with the newer school built struc- tures. Among the older buildings is the Art building which was built around 1890 and Cottage which was built around 1895. The oldest buildings on campus are Post House and the original part of Ford Hall. They were built in 1770 and 1775 respectively. Posich was originally built as a heating plant and was finished in 1875. The newer buildings include the Science Building, Marr Li- brary Building, South and Merrell Dorms. The school has gone through many changes and much progress in recent years. The most tangible physical difference was the . erecting of the extensive new gymnasium under the supervision of 4 our Headmaster, J. William LaBelle. The Gym turned a lacking athletic department into a strong point for the school. lt has also been enhanced by the addition of this year's excellent basketball program. The enrollment this year seems to be higher than last, as well as a stronger student quality. This shows that the school continues to make progressive strides, both with facility expansion and the academic program. Yes, Winchendon has seen many changes but through them all, we have maintained the struc- ture and the tradition on which the school was founded. All in all, as the school looks toward a fu- ture that is very bright. By: Geoff Millar '94 Board Of Trustees Jon Rotenberg '65, Chairman John J. Smith In an independent school the responsibility of the board of trustees is to be aware, to the fullest extent possible, of all matters that pertain to the philosophy and the goals of the school and to assure that decisions of the board conform to these stated objectives. The board of trustees evaluates the Headmaster and sets the broad policy under which the Head administers the school. The Winchendon School is fortunate to have the capable and dedicated service of its board of trustees, many members of which have loyally supported the school for many years. For a first year pro- gram to have an overall regular season record of 16 wins and 4 losses is a great achievement particularly against the very tough competition in the New England Prep School Class A League. Many of the players have signed with division one programs, and others have signed with very competitive division two schools. I believe the future is only the past again, entered through another gatel' -Sir Arthur Wing Pinero 118931. Coach Richards hopes that those words and the formation of wrestling as an intramural sport will serve as the first step in the resurrection of a tradition here at Winchendon. The tradition is one of wrestling excellence which spans the past three decades. In the mid-l960's, the Winchendon School wrestling team won seventy percent of its matches while compiling a 21-9 record, producing six New England champions, and garnering a team New England Class C crown. The grapplers' dominance surfaced again in the 1980's when Winchendon sent three wrestlers to the National Independent School Championships at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. A determined group of individuals has embarked on an arduous quest to reestablish Winchen- don wrestling as a formidable foe. Rigorous practices, weight training, and scrimmages against various schools will be the diet for the young men who have accepted the challenge to restore Winchendon to wrestling dominance. s ,f -.. 4.,... -N-Pf AAN A -...S-Q ' w z 1 v K .Y fel' E, 1 ' fl sag.
