W H S Music Department HE Music Department of l922 Z3 has been a decided success due to the highly proficient manage ment of Mr Small who has worked hard to bring honor to the department and school This IS his first year with our school He is to be complimented on the marked advancement of the music work of Wlnamac High School Nearly one hundred students are af flllated with the music department in cluding the music classes girls glee club boys chorus band and orchestra The work of these students has been compares favorably with that offered by institutions of higher learning It gives a splendid back Ground for future artists With a continued development Wmamac high school can look forward to belng the cause for the success of great musicians The various units of this department cooperate in every way with the activi ties of the school No student is allowed to neglect his regular academic studies because of membershlp ln any of th music organizations Mr Small has done much in planning the work of stu dents who expect to continue their work in college and conservatory The regular music course consists of outside music History of Music Theory Harmony l and Harmony II Four cre dlts are earned on the outside music studv History of Music and Appreciation is the study wherem pupils are gn en the chance to learn to listen to the work of the great masters to 1 nderstand the messages they are conveying to us T really appreciate music one has to be able to understand and to be able to do this IS to be able to listen The History of Music deals with the music of olden times to that of today its advance ment and the lives of the composer this is a cultural subject and is needed to fully aooreclate the finer things ln 1 C Tkeory deals with the fundamentals of music methods of reading and writ Ing music notation keys and key rela tlonshlp This subject is sometimes Harmony is probably the most mter estmg of all music subjects Upon com pletion of Harmony l the student is ble to harmonize easy melodies and analyze easy DIHHO scores The con struction of chords is studied Har mony II consists of a review of all the primary chords and their proper places in composition The secondary chords or subordinate chords are taken up Modulatlons at the keyboard form an in terestmg part of the course As a fmal test the students write an original num ber Regular credit is given those taking lessons outside of school provided they meet the requirerrents set forth by the school board and complying with the plans of the state Academic students are allowed two credits or one unit of outside music toward graduation Pu pils are required to appear in public once a year or whenever requested by the head of the department or super mtendent Th y must pass a test before . f - ' . o , , . , ' - l'f . .. . . , .
