A school annual is a great invention, The staff gets all the fame; The printer gets the money And the editor gets the blame. 17 Class Prophecy During one of my star numbers at the Metropolitan Opera House, I, Marlene Martalock, was startled to look into the audience and see two of my old schoolmates, Mr. and Mrs. John Wiseman, enter the side door. After the recital they came back to my dressing room, and 1 learned that his wife was the former Audrey Steinke and that John Wiseman himself was an important scientist working with the United States Government. Audrey had been a successful model, but since her marriage, had given it up and now ran a school of her own which turned out many successful students. After more discussion I learned that Shirley Shippee was her private secretary and all-round assistant there. We were determined to find out what our other classmates of ’51 were doing. The next day we chartered a plane to Wilton on the W. Schindler Air Dines, owned and operated by our old friend, Wayne Schindler. On our arrival in Wilton, we went to the high school, which had been very much improved by the addition of a new gym and 150 much quieter students than there had been twenty years before. Mr. Valesh is still the Principal, and he helped us locate all but one of our old classmates. Of course we had all heard of Bruce Harrison, who had become the governor of Wisconsin, and of Norman Anderson, Secretary of Agriculture, and Bruce Schnurr, Ambassador to the Ubangi Islands. We are certainly proud to have graduated with these three men. So we set May 24, 1971, as our reunion date. We had invitations printed, and we sent them to all of our classmates but Gary Schultz, whom we were unable to locate. Finally the great day arrived. All of us were in a state of great anticipation. John, Audrey, Shirley Shippee, Wayne, and myself were the first arrivals. A few moments later General Brandau’s wife, the former Shirley Brandenburg, came in beautifully dressed in the latest fashion, followed by Betty Meacham, who was a private teacher for Shirley’s four children. Betty was wearing a solitaire on her left hand, but she refused to tell us who the lucky man was. I finally got her to promise me, by twisting her arm, to send me an invitation to the affair, which would take place next month. Presently Carol Eckelberg and Carolyn Schindler arrived dressed in white nurses’ uniforms. They were both working in a Naval Hospital in Hawaii. Carol had obtained the rank of Chief Nurse. She said that they had just discharged Mary Doyle’s sailor husband who was driving over to the reunion. Suddenly a cry of “The Fleets In’. was followed by Bill Rice and his wife, the former Joyce Stark, and three little boys dressed, just like their daddy, in sailor uniforms. Bill is a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, and Joyce is kept busy taking care of the house and the three little boys. I felt a terrific grip on my arm and turned around to see Mary Gallagher. She was a lady wrestler but is now teaching jitso. Norman Kuderer was one of her pupils, but he was unable to learn anything, so had gone into radio announcing. He arrived presently and later wrote up a broadcast about our reunion. I could hear a snapping of gum and someone dancing along the hall so I looked out--and of course, it was Mary Doyle, Conalee Geier, and Eileen Simonson Connie and Eileen are both married and conduct a dancing school in their spare time. A taxi, driven by Dick Wills, drew up, and Governor Harrison and the two other politicians alighted and came into the gym. An old friend of the Governor’s, Dorothy Bolwahn, came in with them. She was working as a receptionist in his outer office in Madison. She told us that Marjorie Budde would be right in as soon as she had freshened up a bit. Marge had just finished a run as an air line hostess on Northern Air Lines. When Marge arrived, she told us she had just had her hair done in Caroline’s Beauty Salon. This is owned and operated by Mrs. Jasper DeWitt the former Caroline Flock. Caroline was coming over as soon as she got the children to bed. Royce Kortbein came in a little later followed by Charlene Schroeder. Royce owns a dairy farm in Norwalk, and Charlene and her family are his steady customers. Lloyd Switz arrived still later but explained his car had broken down en route, and he had stopped to have it repaired. This was rather odd as he owns and operates a service station in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He is married and has a small family. Now we 18 were all here but Gary. We were getting ready to sit down for the banquet prepared by Mrs. Schwartz and the Home Economics girls. Soft music was furnished by Mr. Berg’s orchestra. Suddenly there was a terrific crash, and Gary came into the room and burst into song. After the applause had died down, he explained he was to star in Cecil B. DeMille’s new production “The Vaughan Monroe Story.” He had heard about the reunion from Mr. Chinnock, our former agriculture teacher, who was working on an irrigation program in California. They had driven home together. Now that we were all here, we sat down to eat. After a merry banquet and speeches by two of our teachers, Mr. L.off and Mr. Cady, we said farewell to one another and returned to our various homes, looking forward to our next reunion in 1991. Beatrice: The teeth. Mr. Loff: What kind of an organ is it? Beatrice: A grind organ. Does my question embarass you? inquired Mr. Berg of the dazed looking student. Those from our class who participated in band were: Lila Mae Farmer, (Twirler) Joanne Fick, Beverly Parr, Aleda Ann Peth, LaVonne Boetzel, Marion Reineke, Ervin Short, and Ellen Steinhoff. The boys who took part in basketball this year were: Ronnie Buchholz, LeRoy Schindler, Omar Geier, Jim Rice, and Edwin Wendland. Our class was also well represented in baseball. This winter a magazine sale was held in which Beverly Parr was highest salesman in the school. Our class placed second in the contest. Those going out for Forensics this year are: Ellen Steinhoff, Ervin Short, and Joan Anderson. We had a few other activities this year which made it very successful. We are looking forward to our Junior year and hope it will be just as successful. 25 Grades 5-6 Grades 7- S 26 5th and 6th Grades We have twenty-three pupils in our room this year. John Shie entered our grade in November from the Rocky Run Rural School. These are our 6th graders: Bill Heilman, Patricia Calloway, Inez Cox, Ruth Domke, Duane Granger, Norman Heintz, Ruth Fick, and Jimmy Valesh. Fifth graders: Helen Backus, Gary Bever, Karen Bever, Evelyn Calloway, Kjyrl Kruse, Jimmy Meacham, Margaret Miller, Earl Pasch, John Schroeder, Karen Schroeder, Marjorie Tillman, Sylvia Wadephul, Carolyn Zellmer, John Shie. In November we gave a play “The First Thanksgiving.’ We had the third and fourth and the seventh and eighth grades as our guests. We enjoyed our Christmas tree and party. It was fun exchanging gifts. Santa Claus was good to everyone. Our school society meets once a month. We call ourselves The Beavers. We have our business meeting, a short program and refreshments each time. The officers for the first half of the year were: President-Marjorie Tillman, Secretary-Duane Granger, Treasurer-Norman Heintz. January 29th, we had a tea for our parents and they visited our class. February was a bad month for us because we had so many absent with influenza. We are looking forward to attending the music festival to be held in Tomah in March. We will not only hear but also see Professor Gordon. We listen to his program every Wednesday. This year we have taken a great deal of interest in our Conservation Corner. Each child made something from Ranger Mac’s Program. We are sending our log with all our best work to Madison to the School of the Air Program. From now on we will be busy making something for the fair exhibit. Each child plans on earning a little extra cash. Maybe we will see you at the fair and show you our exhibit. 7th and 8th Grades Thirty-one students entered our room in September under Miss Linehan’s supervision. Of this group, eleven were charter members, entering first grade in 1943. Many of the original class have left Wilton and others have joined our ranks. Our 7th and 8th graders are: Roger Pasch, Richard Harrison, Orvis Schindler, Caroline Steinhoff, Joyce Fick, Eileen Lydon, Elaine Meseberg, Gary Peth, Joyce Lawrance, Karen Valesh, Nancy Meacham, Tom Wiseman, Harlan Creviston, Chuck Zellmer, Merlyn Eckelberg, Juletta Martalock, Standing: Nancy Hall. Jerelyn Zellmer, Rosalie Lawrance, Shirley Miller, Audrey Winchell, Larry Peth, Marvin Pasch, Gene Wood, Richard Heinz, Carl Cox, Albie Gess, Jack Rice, Kenneth Wilson, and Bob Sullivan. Fall was a busy season; setting to work after a long summer vacation was rather difficult. Physical Education added pleasure in a series of contest ball games; in each of the series of three contests, the losing team treated. Each day we felt thirty minutes far too short a period. Kittenball gave way to volleyball and again losers treated at the end of a series. The eighth grade boys enjoyed football and often were not part of the class groups. Visiting teams gave us an opportunity to be onlookers; we feel we had a pleasant activity in our ball games. Our room activities opened with inviting Mrs. Roder’s group to an American Education Program, which stressed the blessings of liberty in a democracy. Three original plays selected by the class as best written and most entertaining were presented. Book Week followed close with characterization of favorite books. Halloween is a good time to have fun, and we decorated the barracks for our party. Games, stunts, and refreshments made the time pass too rapidly. (Continued on Page 41) 27 Grades 1 2 Grades 3-4 28 Grades 1 and 2 We began the school year with an enrollment of thirty-one. Three pupils, Richard Laughlin of Oklahoma, Ann Pruett of Texas and Shirley Webb of Madison, were added to our group but moved away within a few weeks. First graders are: Verdell Beier, Roger Berg, Larry Bever, Judy Brandau, Richard Calloway, Bonnie Creviston, Doris Fauska, Edward Fick, Robert Granger, Shirley Ann Hericks, Don Kruse, Randy Martalock, James Meseberg, Morris Miller, Eva Parker, Donald Pasch, Vivian Schendel, Barbara Tillman. Second graders are: Lorraine Birkholz, George Calloway, Paul Heinz, Donnabell Lawrence, Pamela Liefke, Wynn Liersh, Sandra Ann Ludiking, Bonnie Lou Stark, Lois Tillman, Louise Tillman, Neil Winchell, Gwendolyn Wood, Lowell Zellmer. Mrs. Hoffman is our teacher. Our mothers were entertained in November. Twenty-six mothers visited us. We all took part in the Christmas operetta, The Lost Doll. Some appeared as dolls, others as blocks, and elves. Paul Heinz sang a solo taking the part of Wee Bear while Sandra Ludiking took the part of the Little Girl Shopper. Much enthusiasm was evident on Valentine's Day. We mailed our valentines in our Valentine Post Office. Outstanding room decorations are our large bulletin board and our plant box with its various foliages, vines, petunias, and geraniums. Grades 3 and 4 The third and fourth grades have an enrollment of twenty-two boys and girls. Of these, 10 are in the third grade and 12 in the fourth grade. Those in the third grade are: Caroline Cox, Ruth Ann Fauska, Dixie Lee Mullens, Edward Miers, Robert Schroeder, Gregory Foley, Bernard Johnson, Wayne Pasch, Kenneth Thurow, and Lyle Schindler. The fourth graders are: David Dunnum, Allan Martin, Thomas Schindler, Peter Kruse, Richard Kruse, Arthur Tillman, Kenneth Fauska, Goldie Winchel, Christine Valesh, Janet Lawrence, Karen Creviston and Delores Creviston. Some highlights of our school year have been visits to some of the early settlers of Wilton in studying, our Community. We invited them to visit us and had a short program for United Nations Day. Other experiences we enjoyed were trips to the Post Office and printing office to see how our community helps us. On December 13th we invited our mothers to visit our room. We had twelve visitors from recess until noon and for lunch with us at the cafeteria. During the first half of the year there were eight pupils who were present every day. These were: Bernard Johnson, Arthur Tillman, Kenneth Fauska, Richard Kruse, Peter Kruse, Thomas Schindler, Allan Martin and Caroline Cox. 29 Baseball Team ROW I: Bruce Harrison. Lon Martalock. Their selections were State Contest March, Success, Bright Star, and Chapel Shrine. They were in Class D and received A in marching and B in playing. Summer activities included playing on Decoration Day and Dairy Day in Wilton. On August 5, 1950 the band went to Tomah and played at the fair. They received free rides and a free lunch from the Band Mothers. They also played at Lone Rock on Labor Day. This year Mr. Berg, the new band instructor, came. He started the band with thirty-two members. Dorothy Bolwahn, Betty Meacham, Ray Steinhoff, and Bruce Harrison discontinued band before the first semester had ended. Mr. Berg has made a number of recordings to show the progress of the Band. A school song was written by Mr. Berg. He also organized a Pep Band at the beginning of the basketball season. We are looking forward to a successful trip to La Crosse this spring. We also hope to take part in many other school activities. Chorus The chorus was re-organized on September 19, 1950 under the direction of Mr. W. J. Berg. One of the first things that was done was the testing of voices of the beginners. On December 21, 1950 our chorus presented a Christmas Festival program entitled, ‘‘The Nativity.’ A melody of familiar Christmas carols were sung by the chorus entitled, Silent Night, Fairest Lord Jesus, Joy To The World, O Sanctissimi, and O Come All Ye Faithful. We are now practicing on songs for the Music Festival to be held at La Crosse on May 5, 1951 which we are planning to attend. Our selections are: To Music, The Green Cathedral, and Cherubim Song. Our director and pianist in chorus is Mr. W. J. Berg. (Continued from 7th and 8th grade history) Christmas Season was a most pleasant season for us. Many of the group painted Nativity and other Christmas Scenes on room and hall windows. We enjoyed watching them as much as they enjoyed doing it. When we returned after two weeks of play and rest, school seemed drab with decorations down and our lovely scenes washed away. However, in this unbroken period we completed our biggest units. Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays were honored with programs as an English project. Valentine’s Day was a day of treats and a good party. A committee made a lovely Valentine Box which we filled to overflowing. Easter will be our next occasion. We never miss an opportunity to treat ourselves and look forward to every chance to celebrate. 41 Home Economics LEFT TO RIGHT: Ellen Steinhoff, Marjorie Budde, Ruth Ann Stratman, Lillian Nauman, Florence Will, Mary Downing, and Beverly Farmer.
