THOMAS Principal T0 THE CLASS OF 1950 Congratulations on having completed the lirst magor step in your educational career As you are well aware, however, this is only one step in what will probably be a never ending succession of steps Your school hopes that you have thoroughly assimilated certaln fundamental facts as a basis for future learning Your school also hopes and I would rate this as even more important than the :actual knowledge that you may have acquired that you have accustomed your think1ng and your actlons to follow certain ideals and patterns that are basic to the building of a fruitful life Among the most important of these ideals of thought and patterns of act1on I would rank that of the Pursuit of Excellence Our Const1tution guarantees our inalienable rightsu to life, llberty, and the pursult of happiness, but the drive to pursue excellence 1S somethlng wh1ch no agency outslde the lndlvidual can guarantee for anyone It lS something which must have 1ts genesis from within each indiv1dual Not all those who work hard and strive for excellence achieve lt, sometlmes some of them may even be regarded by thelr contemporaries as 'fallures But certalnly, very few outstandlng achievements have been accomplished by those who were not striv1ng for excellence May the vigorous Pursult of Excellence be one of the most lnfluential driving forces in the life of each one of you members of the Class of 1960 Slncerely, Jihad? 6 , . . . .
